@Kitsune-Inferno Wait, that's weird. Last I remember Japanese voice actors record their lines pretty late into production after the animation is already finished. As far as I know when it comes to anime, the Japanese cast records their lines as they watch the footage, much like how dubs are recorded. I suppose things could have changed since I last heard about it since the industry is much different now, but it'd be news to me.

RE: Funimation DVD Discussion IV (Please Check First Post for FAQ)
@Nitwit Again, Vic has nothing to do with this topic either. The last time we got a dubbed song in One Piece was in 2011, not counting songs like Binks' Sake or the Sogeking theme. Vic's problematic issues were brought to light much later in 2019. The lack of special features also has nothing to do with Vic.
I wish they kept going with the dubbed songs too. Was looking forward to hearing an official English dubbed Kokoro no Chizu since the dub began in 2007.

Yeah, not gonna lie, I heard "nani" at first too but I think it's because I have anime brainrot lol. It's definitely "mommy" though as it makes way more sense in this context.

RE: One Piece Collectibles v.11 Main Discussion - "Nothing but Fanservice!!"
I've been picking up a few things here and there. I've been loving the Look Up series of figures from MegaHouse in particular.
Gear Fifth Luffy and Yamato release this month, and Kaido, Big Mom, Sanji, and Nami all release later throughout the year.

RE: Funimation DVD Discussion IV (Please Check First Post for FAQ)
@Blake-Bakes-Cakes Yeah, I noticed that too and I'm honestly worried about it. Never been a fan of "Gear Two," "Gear Five," etc... I really don't want them to break consistency here more than they already have.
Still prefer "Gear Fifth" over all of it though.
-
RE: Funimation DVD Discussion IV (Please Check First Post for FAQ)
...Ummm, the fuck? That feels out of the blue lol. I don't see what Vic has to do with any of this.
Anyway, the Gear Fifth clip was fun! Colleen did such a good job. Can't wait to hear more.

RE: Funimation DVD Discussion IV (Please Check First Post for FAQ)
For the collections it really does seem like they're doing the Straw Hats for the covers again. So weird. What's interesting is the color they chose for Brook is tan (which would work better for Jinbe) even though it should be grey. Oh well, it's not like Collection 14's color got it right for him either since it was purple. At least they got it right for Sanji with the blue color on Collection 32's packaging.
It's all inconsequential at the end of the day, I'm just wondering why they'd bother breaking the consistency .

RE: Funimation DVD Discussion IV (Please Check First Post for FAQ)
Wow. As of this post that means we're like 32 or so episodes behind Japan. If I were to go back in time and tell myself in the late 2000s that we'd eventually be this close to the Japanese broadcast I never would have believed it.

Next set doesn’t really have too much, yeah? I think the set after is G5?
We're currently up to 1048, so if they do 12 episodes a set then then that means the upcoming one will reach 1060, and then the one after that would be 1072! So yeah, Gear Fifth will be in the set after next. And Wano should conclude with the set after that one, as they can easily squeeze in enough episodes to reach 1085.
That means there are three more voyages that remain for Wano. It's a lot closer than it seems.

RE: Funimation DVD Discussion IV (Please Check First Post for FAQ)
Not surprised this is happening. If anything I feel like this should have happened sooner.
As for people losing access to digital copies of shows and movies they've purchased on Funimation and owned for years, that fucking blows. I feel like this should carry over as well, and I'm sure they've tried but complicated legal stuff prevents that from happening. Just the nature of this beast, I suppose. It's a clear reminder that you don't really own digital products you pay for. It's just a glorified rental that can be taken away from you at any time.

RE: 1092: "Bonney's Cry of Lament! The Darkness Lurking on Future Island"
@Captain-Krupp Unfortunately, yeah. Most people prioritize being as closely behind the manga as possible, quality of pacing be damned lol.
-
RE: 1092: "Bonney's Cry of Lament! The Darkness Lurking on Future Island"
Wasn't a fan of the pacing for this one at all, especially considering its material covers less than one chapter. The upcoming recap episode for next week is gonna break the momentum it did have toward the end with Law encountering Blackbeard... and seeing as we're only a few episodes into Egghead and just saw Law not too long ago, a recap episode on him already feels shoehorned and unnecessary.
They really should have done a filler arc right after Wano.

Maybe it's an affectation he's been doing for a while and I haven't noticed until now because Franky didn't have much to do during Wano or Kazuki Yao had some dental work around the time these episodes were recorded but Franky's sounded like he was talking through a mouth full of gauze half the time during this episode and the last. He sounds fine when he has to shout or exaggerate so I hope it's just that and not a sign of something more serious.
I noticed that about Franky too... For the last few years I've felt that Kazuki Yao has been sounding a bit lethargic. He's been lacking the signature Franky energy for a while now and it just seems like the quality keeps declining. You're right about him sounding like he's got something in his mouth. On top of that, he sounds tired as hell and it's really distracting unfortunately. Whatever may be wrong, I hope Kazuki Yao will be alright.

The decision to go back to 1:30 allows for more creativity + not needing to stay at one opening for that long + no need for padding (straw hats fighting random bullshit) and I just love that someone in Toei decided they had enough and want it back and it pays off here.
Agreed. Some of the 2:30 openings were good, but most were just filled with dumb shit and it got super formulaic and uninteresting real quick. I also hated that it seemed like only One Piece had to be the anime like this with a long opening and no ending song.
I never thought it would actually happen again since at this point the anime has been doing 2:30 openings and no endings this for so long, but I am so happy it's back to normal.

RE: Funimation DVD Discussion IV (Please Check First Post for FAQ)
What makes this significant is the later episodes from this set (1046-1048) all aired earlier this year and we're getting them dubbed just before 2023 wraps up. This makes us 40 episodes behind as of this post. Absolutely wild.

Shame the brim got popped and it turned into a bucket hat lol. Hopefully they can fix it if it returns next year!
@Zek said in Luffy will be on the MACY'S PARADE!!!!:
They still mispronounced Saiyan though.
I didn't catch the bit with Goku yet for this year yet, but the last time Goku was there they actually pronounced it correctly. Since I didn't see it yet I'm gonna assume they did it again this year. The way the English dub pronounces it is actually incorrect but it's so ingrained in the English fandom's culture at this point... so the fact they pronounced it correctly for the Macy's Parade is both amusing and surprising.

RE: One Piece being taken off of crunchyroll?
Crunchyroll is far too big to be storing their data on a measly laptop, lol.
I think things have been incredibly secure and organized on the streaming end, especially ever since Funimation accidentally leaked that one simulcast episode before it aired in Japan in 2009.

@MugiMikey Sorry if my memory's faulty here, but wasn't there evidence via social media that initial casting/recording of Punk Hazard was being done circa 2017/18? We know for sure a slew of those TV specials had been in the can for a few years before their release, so I think it's likely that a least a good portion of Punk Hazard was done before the speedup was announced in 2019. Why exactly we were put in that limbo state is anyone's guess, whether it was lukewarm DVD sales and reexamining the whole release structure, Toei not being happy of no TV deal at the time, etc, etc. But I don't think we were ever truly canceled.
End of the day, let's be happy things worked out the way they did.
The Punk Hazard arc was definitely being worked on in their initial run; yeah, there were a few social media posts from the voice actors about it, and it was likely cancelled during the middle of dubbing the arc because that's when the decision to discontinue it was made, and they just sat on what they've worked on because it was cheaper to just stop there rather than finishing it up and releasing it. Essentially, it would have ended up as vaporware if they just never said anything about it.
It could have even been completed or close to completion and they were just going to never release it since it'd be cheaper to just not do so. This kind of thing happens unfortunately all the time in the industry where stuff is worked on or even completely finished and ready to go... just to never be released, ever.
I, too, am very happy with how things turned out. Definitely a stroke of luck.
-
RE: Funimation DVD Discussion IV (Please Check First Post for FAQ)
At the time of its cancellation the dub was just a little over 500 episodes in and it took 11 years to get there, and once it was brought back they did nearly the same amount of work in about three years. I'm assuming this was an incredibly expensive venture, but it wasn't just the dub that was getting more money pumped into it, especially with the animation quality starting with Wano. Wano was a big game changer for Toei and they wanted to show it off. I think the new blood at Toei knew that with a modern push it could really become the juggernaut it always had the potential to be overseas. It's no coincidence that the show started getting added to Netflix at this time too. As unfortunate as the pandemic was, it was even bigger stroke of luck for One Piece that it happened shortly after, with tons of people turning to streaming while at home... all the while the live action show was also being developed as a way to reach even more people globally.
One Piece was pretty much everywhere starting in 2020 and lots of people realized it was worth giving it a chance and binge watching. It was marketed as one of those shows that you binge watch for a bit because it's worth getting to the current material. Even recently, Gear Fifth was big enough for Toei to market it heavily to western audiences all over social media. I couldn't see something like this happening ten years ago, let alone five years ago.
The dub is lucky that Toei's new Wano game plan happened shortly after it was cancelled internally. It truly ended up working out.
One Piece is now bigger than ever, especially in the west. I don't think it's at Naruto's level in the US, simply because that has legacy status, but it is absolutely huge. One Piece merch is everywhere, from GameStop, to Target, Walmart, and several stores at the mall like Hot Topic, Spencers, and Box Lunch. The anime purely exists as an advertisement to sell merchandise, and with it being pretty much everywhere now I hope Toei finds their endeavor to push One Piece hard overseas a success.

RE: Funimation DVD Discussion IV (Please Check First Post for FAQ)
@Trueblade74 There's no way to actually confirm this so take it with a grain of salt, but I heard from my friend who's a voice actor, who actually has done work for Funimation and has many other connections with voice actors in the industry, that Funimation chose to stop dubbing it due to it not being profitable enough. At least that's what I was told. Funimation decided on this in early 2019, with it being in internal limbo for about a year. They were also planning an announcement about its cancellation, apparently. I was told this was insider info and to keep their identity anonymous, but they would have no reason to lie to me.
Obviously that aforementioned dub cancellation announcement was never made and later on that year Funimation said the dub would continue. It was weird though, with production ceasing in 2018 followed by radio silence for a long while and then out of nowhere an announcement about it coming back was made, as if it actually was originally cancelled.
Personally I still believe One Piece was cancelled internally at Funimation like my friend told me, but luckily Toei was interested in a global push to bring most major markets current, especially to coincide with Wano being the new big arc. If you look at the international releases, many One Piece dubs not only started popping up all over the place at about this time, but lots of them also managed to get the very same speed up treatment even we had been hoping for. With Toei also funding the English dub from where Funimation originally left off, especially now with an emphasis on streaming and physical media being secondary, the dub was able to continue again and this time more material was dubbed faster than ever before.

RE: Arlong Park rereads One Piece post time skip (December 2023)
Sounds like a great idea! I've read all of it as it came out weekly and haven't really revisited the post TS arcs like I have the pre TS arcs so my memory might be a bit spotty for some of it... so that means some of the material I haven't touched in 13 years. I've collected the volumes as they came out and always intended on doing a re-read, so maybe this will be what makes me do it.

RE: Funimation DVD Discussion IV (Please Check First Post for FAQ)
As much as I love Travis as Ace, I won't lie... his voice for Ace is deeper than what I think it should be. As an alternative take on the character, it's certainly fine, but I've felt it's been too far on the deeper end ever since I first heard it in 2007.

Feels like only yesterday when One Piece was considered to be some niche underdog thing in the west underneath Dragon Ball, Naruto, and Bleach.
Even after any amounts of youtubers and influencers and OPLA exposure, that feeling will probably stay with me
I still can't believe how far it's come. It blows my mind... Lots of new fans (or even those that got into it in the 2010s) don't really know how bad it was back in the 2000s and, to a lesser extent, the early 2010s.
I'm glad things have changed.

Just wanted to say that today (technically yesterday) is the 16th anniversary of the Funimation/Crunchyroll dub's debut on Cartoon Network, which was September 29, 2007. I can't believe it's been that long.
The many months leading up to its airing, along with its premiere, is something I'll never forget.

RE: Funimation DVD Discussion IV (Please Check First Post for FAQ)
First Sanji, now Luffy again... yeah, it's weird that there's so many characters they could use, but I guess that now they're well into the timeskip territory I suppose reusing characters at this point is fine, especially with their new designs. I fully expect Gear Fifth on a cover in the future.
As a side note, I feel like Enel should have been on Collection 8 and not Merry lol.
@Blake-Bakes-Cakes said in Funimation DVD Discussion IV (Please Check First Post for FAQ):
I just noticed they use “Gear Four” instead of “Fourth Gear” in the summary. Ngl that combined with all marketing using Gear Five Im scared theyll just jarringly change the terminology in the dub.
Yeah, I noticed thanks to Gear Fifth's prominence on social media they're really pushing "Gear Five." Doesn't help that the way it's written in the manga and anime is "Gear 5," but it's meant to be read as "Fifth," sort of like how you would read today's date, September 15, as "Fifteenth."
Honestly seeing as the Gears have always been straightforward in their format i.e. "Gear Second," "Gear Third," "Gear Fourth," etc.... It bugged me when they first started using "Gear Two" and "Gear Three" which I first noticed when they did the manga speedup back in 2009, and they were using "Second Gear" and "Third Gear" in the simulcast subs at the same time IIRC. There was no fuckery in Unlimited Adventure and left it as "Gear Second," so I don't know why things had to get complicated.

RE: One Piece Live-Adaptation Drama Announced
Now that it's almost here, I just gotta say that I've been loving all of the promotional material leading up to its premiere. Sure, there's a few things I don't really like about it, but as a whole I'm convinced there's a lot of heart and intelligence going into this project. I'm not expecting this to be perfect by any means, but I think it's going to be great.
I used to be doubtful of this endeavor being worth it to begin with, but I've always hoped it'd be successful and thankfully it's shaping up to look pretty solid. Now the only thing I can ask for is this to set the standard for live action adaptations of anime going forward.
Let's fuckin' go.

@MugiMikey said in Funimation DVD Discussion IV (Please Check First Post for FAQ):
@Captain-Krupp They definitely keep it around for consistency, even though they haven't been good at that lately lol. Back when they made the gold logo it wasn't to show it was the "true" version (since the blue version is the most recognizable and on-brand one anyway), it was during a time in the 2000s when Funimation had a penchant for redesigning or creating their own logos for each show, even if the default logos were serviceable (like Dragon Ball GT for example). In One Piece's case it definitely helped differentiate it from 4Kids, but given their track record like I said it was simply something they did for many of their shows at the time... so it really isn't as special as it seems it is.
I'd argue the gold logo is not only unnecessary but it's a bigger pain in the ass than it needs to be since they have to go out of their way to edit it in, sometimes making awkward-ass edits like in Bon Voyage. Also, redoing the entire typeface and getting rid of the Luffy silhouette makes it inferior IMO.
I think I realized another reason, even if its not the real one, I think they did it becausa for better or worse the dub had to be credited as "Shonen Jump's One Piece" and if they kept the blue logo it could have been confused for 4kids Shonen Jump's One Piece dub.
Like I said Funimation remade their logos for almost all of their shows at the time, so the fact it differentiates it from the 4Kids version is an added bonus, but I do not believe that was their intention. The dub aimed to be much more faithful to the Japanese version... which also uses the blue logo. The gold logo just kind of makes it its own thing for the sake of making it its own thing.
Also, the network (and marketing in general) didn't treat the Funimation dub any differently from the 4Kids dub either, and that also goes for the more limited markets at the time, which didn't have as big of a global reach as the 4Kids dub. Most casual audiences at the time couldn't really tell the difference between both dubs either, only that the rap was gone and voices were changed. It was just another DBZ or Pokemon voice cast change scenario.
The logo change wasn't to make some big statement about how different the show was, it was just a in-house trend that they used to add extra flare to their logos at the time simply because they could.

RE: Funimation DVD Discussion IV (Please Check First Post for FAQ)
My guess is the earlier specials like the Nami and Merry ones aren't dubbed because the entire series is now super accessible thanks to streaming and the live action show will cover some of the early content. It's also been like five years since we've gotten one IIRC, which is around the time when the show started to get a wider reach.
Seems like there's a unified plan to get One Piece big outside of Japan right now, especially with everything happening at once. I guess at this point Toei views the specials as redundant since they'd rather have people binging hundreds of episodes instead now that it's streaming. Not only that, but the anime is getting accelerated dubs in multiple languages that are right behind the Japanese release thanks to Toei, the live action show is about to drop, and the final saga's happening in the manga. Never really quite seen everything happen all at once like that before, AND with the push it has from all parties involved.

RE: Looking for New Maintainers
The collectibles section here has always been a favorite of mine, so it was disappointing to see it sort of fizzle out over time despite the merchandise scene still going strong in other corners of the internet. I haven't stopped collecting cool One Piece merch that catches my eye, even almost 20 years later. I'd love to see this section grow again, and while I'm not sure exactly what you guys are looking for I'd love to lend a hand whenever and wherever possible, if possible.

RE: One Piece Live-Adaptation Drama Announced
My expectations were pretty low but earlier today I got excited as the anticipation built up. Once I watched the trailer, I couldn't help but feel like something was off. I felt disappointed and was trying to figure out why. Is it that I'm just biased towards animation?
After a couple hours of rewatching the trailer, I think I know why. My main issue is with the costumes and colors. Sometimes it commits to translating the imagery over to live action to make it convincing and sometimes it doesn't, making it look awkward. Y'know when we talked about why they won't have 10 foot tall characters and why Merry's design was changed to be a bit more realistic? I get why they'd ultimately do that at the end of the day since the point of this show is to be a realistic take of the story and Merry can't look like a plastic toy... but why didn't they do that for some of the outfits? Sometimes it looks like people dressed up in cosplay or in Spirit Halloween costumes and wigs for a YouTube fan film... and at other points it looks completely fine, or amazing even. Despite the inconsistency with the costume designs, at least the surroundings look great.
But the more I watch it the more desensitized I get. I'm still looking forward to watching this and I want it to be good so I'll be sure to binge it when it releases. Here's hoping it'll be amazing.
-
RE: One Piece Live-Adaptation Drama Announced
I'm getting used to Merry's look the more I see it... It just wasn't what I was expecting. I wouldn't say it's horrible or anything like that, it just put me off a bit at first since I'm so used to the ovular, cute Merry.
Do I think Merry's design is going to ruin the show? No, it's serviceable enough. I really want this show to succeed, but other anime to live action endeavors are making me feel very wary of this, even despite Oda's involvement. The same studio did Cowboy Bebop's live action adaptation and that seems like, at least at face value, it'd be much easier to adapt to live action than One Piece. I don't expect this to be a 1:1 of the original anime or manga, nor do I want it to be because then what would even be the point of this project existing? Regardless, until we see something substantial, I'm still worried about it not being great.
One Piece, as a whole, just doesn't feel live action friendly by design but I'm ready to be proven wrong.
Like I said, I really want this to be good despite having my doubts, but I'll wait and see. Fingers crossed.

RE: Why the fuck did Funi For Kids fail? A post mortem discussion
Of course, dude. I think the whole story is still really interesting, and as someone who's been in the community since 4Kids first got the license I see this being talked about less and less as time goes on. It was such an incredible license rescue that has resulted in incredible progress for One Piece. If you had told me in the mid/late 2000s that One Piece would be as big as it is now in the Anglosphere I NEVER would have believed you.

Been lurking here since 2005, got an account in 2006 (that I lost the login details to), and re-registered when it was announced Funimation got the license in April 2007 so I could join the speculation. That makes my current here account 16 years old. Christ.
IIRC, that means I started lurking when the anime was at Water 7 and the manga was starting Enies Lobby.
-
RE: Why the fuck did Funi For Kids fail? A post mortem discussion
Hey, so, I just ended up finding this thread and it's definitely something worth discussing. Sorry for a post mortem revival about... post mortem.
Anyway, I always believed it was a lot of things. I was part of the fandom at the time so I saw all of it play out. Yeah, Funimation acquired the license while the 4Kids dub was still airing—even though the dub was confirmed cancelled in December 2006, there were still lots of episodes left to air in the US, especially since Toonami UK finished airing them long before. I remember that the Funimation dub was originally scheduled to begin in summer 2007, but Toonami kept doing so many Naruto marathons that it pushed it back to fall lol.
Anyway, because of the 4Kids backlog of episodes there was a seamless transition that had the Funimation dub picking up right where the 4Kids dub left off the following week... and yeah the Funimation dub only lasted about 6 months before it was removed. It was particularly odd, especially given that Cartoon Network's interest in keeping the show going is what led to the license being picked up so quick. From what I remember, the suits at Cartoon Network were changing stuff up in late 2007/early 2008, and it appeared they wanted to distance themselves from anime and focus on their original programming... which is why lots of live action bullshit came out of nowhere at this exact time too.
If you think about it, One Piece getting dropped isn't even the weirdest thing. Remember how I said Toonami aired all sorts of Naruto marathons? They aired the shit out of Naruto since it was a ratings hit and didn't even finish airing it... if I remembered correctly, they dropped it with about 10-15 episodes remaining until it was finished. That's why shortly after that, competitors Disney XD and Nicktoons began airing Naruto Shippuden and Dragon Ball Kai respectively. Then Toonami got the boot along with Naruto, along with all of the other anime that was on the block. It was clear that the new heads of Cartoon Network weren't interested in anime unless it was one big merchandise commercial for kids like Pokemon.
Adult Swim doing its April Fools Toonami airing in 2012 showed that there was still a market for anime on TV, especially since four years later, the anime industry grew a LOT thanks to the internet and streaming.
As for One Piece's reception at the time... well, its reputation wasn't great, but it was doing good enough that the heads at CN wanted to keep airing it on Toonami. So I guess it was doing good enough for the network. When the 4Kids dub was airing, One Piece's reputation was shit. Most had exposure to the 4Kids dub and nobody really had anything positive to say about it. Funimation immediately picking up where the 4Kids dub left off didn't do much to fix it either. It would take YEARS for this show to become successful, mostly thanks to the passage of time.
tldr; One Piece (both 4Kids and Funimation dubs) did fine ratings-wise on Toonami, even though most kids only sat through it waiting for Naruto to air. Cartoon Network lost interest in airing anime in the late 2000s and realized a few years later that it was worth airing again only after it became mainstream.

@Captain-Krupp said in Funimation DVD Discussion IV (Please Check First Post for FAQ):
Steven Bombs did great for CN and they did wonders for DBZ? Why not try that.
It's a bit different with One Piece now though. Steven Universe was Cartoon Network's own show and it was the first and only place you could get new episodes. It worked for Dragon Ball Z because episodes usually aired on CN before they were released on very expensive 3 or 4 episode DVD singles, and there definitely weren't easy ways you could binge-watch it at the time. On top of that, watching TV was a normal thing back then and DBZ was helping lead the anime boom in the US.
One Piece on Adult Swim has always been airing a catalog of dubbed episodes that have existed on DVD for years, and subtitled Japanese version episodes have existed for even longer than that online in easy-to-binge ways. I'm pretty sure more people stream TV shows, especially super long ones like One Piece, rather than tuning in for cable these days.
Toonami is now just supplemental to the anime industry as a whole and retains its relevance through legacy. It is no longer the pioneer it once was.

No, the article is dated March 16 2006. 4Kids stop dubbing/drop license on December 6th 2006, close to 9 months later.
That's when the article was published, yeah, but the article is about their 2005 results. Which is at least a full year before they decided to drop the anime.

Maybe, it just depends on how the dub's foundation is handled. For example, even if 4Kids never made ANY visual edits to One Piece, I bet most people still wouldn't like it due to the voice cast, the score replacement, or even script changes. That may have worked for Dragon Ball Z on Toonami a decade beforehand, but in 2010 things were different and Kai, at its core, was still dubbed with respect compared to everything else on 4Kids' block.

That article was about information a full year before they decided to drop it, so I wouldn't take that as evidence that the dub was profitable. The show getting removed from their block and then outright canned a year later is all we need to know it wasn't the hit they were expecting. The merchandise was in clearance sections everywhere and its reputation was dogwater.
As for Dragon Ball Kai, I don't know the exact logistics behind it, but they didn't license the show in the same kind of way they did with other anime they got. It was the Funimation dub just with further edits. It's more like they were granted the rights to air Funimation's work... It was a special case kind of thing.

Ehh, while it wasn't successful enough for 4Kids to continue it, it was successful enough that Cartoon Network still wanted more of it... if that makes any sense. This was also way before 4Kids' bankruptcy too. 4Kids dropped One Piece as quickly as they could (they confirmed it in December 2006) with the license being in limbo until April 2007... well, at least that's when they announced that Funimation got it. IIRC, Cartoon Network's desire to continue airing One Piece is what lead to the license going to Funimation so quickly and making the transition seamless, at least in the US.
The 4Kids dub was not popular at ALL. Actually, from what I've seen, One Piece was pretty hated because of it. At school everyone loved Naruto... and One Piece was that weird and annoying show that looked bad and sounded bad. Online this was a similar sentiment too, unless you went to specific forums dedicated to the One Piece manga or the anime in Japanese. When the Funimation dub came out I was able to convince a few friends to watch and become fans of One Piece but overall the damage had already been done. It wasn't until about the mid-2010s when I started to see One Piece's reputation start turning around in the west.

Decided to see it first dubbed because I wanted to hear the voices, and man, it was more wild than I'd thought. The songs being left in Japanese was a little jarring but you get used to it after a while. Actually surprised at the somber note the movie ended on, but I really enjoyed it overall.
Besides me and my girlfriend, there was maybe 2 or 3 other people in the theater besides us. It was incredibly empty.

@Zephray Yeah the fact that the dub was behind several arcs and that each arc introduces hundreds of characters, i figured that would have made it a nightmare to dub the games
That’s absolutely true. Casting for games would be a headache when you’re behind. That said, I was more thinking the minimum costs for dozens of actors to each come in and deliver a line or two, since the games tend to have dozens of characters show up, each with probably only an hour or less of recording work. OP just has so many characters. Paying for minimum time for 40 actors is a lot more than paying for 20, you know?
I remember when Unlimited Adventure came out and it covered material that the dubbed show didn't get to yet and most of the cast changed by the time they actually got around to dubbing Water Seven and Enies Lobby a few years later. The only ones I recall staying are Franky and Lucci's VAs, but that's also because they were the biggest newcomers and the rest were pretty much inconsequential.
Some terminology used in the game changed for the dub too, like how Gear Second's name wasn't altered. That being said I still really can't get used to "Second Gear" to this day lol...
Especially now that the dub has progressed well beyond that point it just makes the game look like inconsistent and contradictory to the final product. With being so behind and having large casts in mind I get why they don't try dubbing the games anymore.

RE: One Piece is back on Toonami again
One episode a week, huh? Man, that didn't take long.
Hopefully it goes back up to two.

RE: One Piece Live-Adaptation Drama Announced
I gotta say despite all of the news and such, I still do not have high hopes for this. Of course I'd love for it to succeed, but I'm in the camp that thinks One Piece just isn't meant for live action and this is going to end up like Cowboy Bebop.
Please let me be proven wrong.
