I'm more pleased that it seems like they're taking their time with this one, with no indication it's being rushed out the door like most licensed games. Looks like this one is getting some polish before the release date.

RE: Chapter 889: An Unknown Mama
Definitely a lot of unanswered questions about Daifuku's power. Like, how much of a will of its own does it the genie have? And if it's a genie, shouldn't it be able to grant wishes or have some sort of magics or powers other than flight? It does seem like it should do more than it has.

RE: One Piece World Seeker (PS4, Open World(?), 2018)
Since the game itself is clearly early beta, I think it looks good, but am hoping for the following
-More islands that just that one. I'm hoping that is a "starter" island as it seems very basic for the most part aside from the potential interior and is a relatively bland setting given how rich the One Piece world is.
-Tweaking the graphics to look more like One Piece style
-Large enemy variety
-A good amount of canon One Piece elements. Characters, items, enemies, etc.
-More RPG elements of Luffy acting like Luffy. He seems a bit too serious from what we've seen.
-At least one other playable character, and if not, the crew should have a decent screentime.I am in the understanding that some of these things will probably be addressed in the inevitable sequel, especially the playable characters.

RE: 817: ''Wet Cigarette - The Eve of Sanji's Marriage''
How many SHs actually DID get a fight that was neither one-sided (in either side) nor ended prematurely after the TS? I think it's Luffy and Franky. I treat it as yet another sign of growing OP's Luffy-centrism. One that doesn't bother me as much as the others since fights were always the element I cared least about in this series. That's why I can fully enjoy things like Brook vs BM or Pedro vs Tamago as I'd likely get bored if they were shown in full.
I'm definitely not bothered by it at this point, since it seems clear that the series is moving away from straight on classic dueling to some degree (in other words long, protracted dueling). Luffy does because he must, but otherwise the crew does not have to get assigned designated villains to one-on-one with anymore. It still happens occasionally, but it is more exceptional now. Instead, the series is focusing on getting other non-Straw Hats time to shine and the SHs are doing more back-up and teamwork than before, as are the villains.

RE: Warning: "MangaStream" is using mining script in their page
@HTC:
So says the mining blocker addon i'm using with firefox 57.
This is just a heads up!
Only noticed it today: hadn't notice it before.
I usually read One Piece (and others) from MangaStream's. Went to check if new manga had been released and … surprise ... mining script blocked ...
Which addon is this?

RE: Hajime no Ippo
Takamura's is only invincible when he's fighting cans and as his last fight demonstrated he's starting to have problems even with them. As for shifting focus squarely to him unless Morikawa decides to make Takamura stop acting like a douche don't see that going over well.
I is much more believable that Takamura, Sendo, or Miyata will get their own spin-off. This way, Takamura's character can be tweaked a bit to not be a bit easier to get behind, like Ippo retiring makes him get his shit kinda together and a little less of an ass to justify it. A spin-off also gives a chance for a different author or editor to continue the mantle of the HnI saga to an end, because…..people do like the side characters too and their stories aren't over and too much time has been devoted to them otherwise to just grind their stories to a halt.
It would be very awkward to keep the Ippo title if there is a spin-off. There would have to be a name change to some extent.
At this point, Ippo's story should be an epilogue of sorts. I can envision, maybe, Ippo retires for a while then takes another crack at the world stage. But that would be a very poor development (would Kamagawa even allow it?). Ippo should be done at this point. He promised he would to Kumi and he told himself in the ring it was his last. And he lost the fight on top of it.
The only other development that could happen is a time skip and that the punk drunk effects were cured some how but....really?
@Yuugi's:
Chances are we'll get Takamura's next fight, where he slaughters this poor chump with a single punch, too.
Completely forgot about that. Yeah, doesn't seem like the time to drag out a Taka fight.
-
RE: Hajime no Ippo
Just read these chapters and all I can think was
….holy shit
I mean this batch not only confirms that Ippo himself knows he is punch drunk and is willing to retire, but he loses his final bout to a relative nobody.
My respect for this series soared after this. I mean, this goes completely against shounen convention.
Okay, maybe, MAYBE Ippo will have another comeback like Joe did in Ashita no Joe, but Joe never gave up boxing kept going
Ippo, on the other hand, has a life and a future outside of boxing. He's not like Joe whose whole being was the glove. Ippo will want to retire after this. Not only that, he already promised he would retire.
Now the big question is.....is this the end of the series? Ippo is the TITLE character and on the cover of every single volume. Can the author really continue with someone like Takamura, who is virtually invincible? What would be the point? We would already assume he would win and if not, it would not mean much because his dream was nigh impossible anyway.
If this is the end, then I cannot wait for an anime and an anime continuation is almost assured.

RE: Chapter 886 : This Ish The Way I Live
I think it's a little ironic that they're saying this about Oven's CoO when like immediately beforehand he got completely blind-sighted by Sanji's attack.
One could argue that he did notice Sanji's attack, but Sanji moved too fast for him to react.
-
RE: Chapter 886 : This Ish The Way I Live
I find it very entertaining how Oda deliberately makes this very morally grey character, Bege, unabashedly the one we are rooting despite twice attempting to execute Pekoms (once in the back) and Oven being ethically in the right from his POV. Well, aside from that distasteful decision to use his wife as a hostage to draw Bege out.
Also the title panel itself with Pez is both heartwarming and a little messed up.
Which begs the question–will Bege allow Oven to live if/when he saves Chiffon? If this weren't One Piece, I wouldn't expect Oven to walk away from this, given that it would still be in-character for Bege to execute him after he was soundly beaten with Sanji's help. Though maybe Bege will still go to town on him.
-
RE: Chapter 886 : This Ish The Way I Live
I really liked this chapter. It also looks like Sanji isn't done with Oven. I know it isn't popular for a character to help through sneak attacks, but I would love it if Sanji helped Bege win through underhanded means. It would add a bit of realism to the situation in which the mission and saving Chiffon & the Firetanks is more important than his pride and recognition
Also, this chapter seems to imply Oven having heightened CoO given that he found Chiffon right away after she was taken away and hidden. Does this mean he might see through Sanji's disguise if he gets a better chance?
As far as Jinbe & Co, I am guessing they are about to fight the Smoothie armada givne Jinbe's line about getting ready to fight and the allusion to the full moon. Again, implies a major brawl will be brewing with them too.
The Luffy decision is going to be controversial to some, mostly because it is a very Goku-esque decision–choosing to fight the strongest dudes in order to surpass them. However, this IS something Goku has done in the past and he has declared "I WILL SURPASS YOU!" at least a few times in the past. Again, realizing he needs to treat fights like training. The only difference here is that it is haki he is planning to hone.
This itself may be a good development because we may finally get concrete answers on each type of haki and how it works.

RE: The Lev Ely Discussion Thread
The Straw Hats going to Mariejois would be outright stupid. It would essentially be them leaving the New World. Just can't happen. Not only that, they already have a plan, and this is in no way part of it.
Maybe, Maaaybe there will be some sort of post-Reverie turmoil that the SHs will read in the news the following day and Vivi, Riku, etc are held hostage or whatever and are forced to intervene, but….please no.
Now Sabo and/or Dragon crashing Reverie, that is much more likely since they are more involved with the goings on there.
Though I do not think that Reverie will even last a full volume length. It will cut away to show what the other SHs are doing at some point.
Also, I think this side-arc will establish that Vivi can handle whatever shit that goes down (Shirahoshi too to some extent). Alabasta was a time where she was in over her head, but here she should be ready to be Alabasta's monarch.

RE: 813: ''The Fateful Meeting - Luffy and Big Mom!''
Visual art direction was easily the high point, along with the music. Animation was mostly good aside from a few hiccups.
that Smoothie walk was pretty damn weird though.
That was a strangely bad walk-cycle there considering how well the rest of this episode was done. Like it was one scene animated by interns. The only part keeping this from a 10/10.
Oh hey, and speaking of voices they finally gave the blue-haired girl a line! Kind of.
I was also surprised Milk was allowed that since up until the end, there were just random shots of her smiling. Kinda reminds me of Marineford where the background Whitebeard Pirates got more direct focus. During the Tea Party, I look forward to seeing more.

RE: Oda's Interviews
Good. I didn't want the series to rush through a Yonkou overthrow checklist and it seemed way too soon to confront Kaido, say, 20 chapters from now. I enjoy the journey and like it when side characters get plenty of chances to shine.
Then again, I was never one of those that was super eager to get to Wano anyway at the expense of everythign before it. I want Reverie to get good focus and I want plenty of chapters devoted to Marco & Co returning from exile. Heck, I wouldn't mind if there was a completely left-field arc between the two that has scarcely been theorized.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
A large arc with Marco and Weevil seems much more likely than the Reverie IMO. There's no way Luffy will be in Mariejois and I can't see Oda having several volumes without him.
That's what I'm thinking too, especially since Marco & co really should have a proper re-intro instead of just showing up on Wano. Plus, the Weevil stuff always seemed to foreshadow a future arc. I am thinking Luffy & the rest will get involved even though the original plan was to have just have Inuarashi and Nekomamushi seek him out.
While Reverie may get a spotlight, I still don't see more than a handful of chapters. One constant is that, yes, Luffy is always involved in the major arcs. I've been curious if anyone figured out the record amount of pages in the series where Luffy didn't appear between pages he does.

RE: Chapter 885: Grrruuumble
@Kaido:
Yeah, he can alter it - that's what he did in his debut, when he saw Jigra shooting one of Bege's crewmates and shot Jigra instead.
Oh, right. Thanks for the refresher.
-
RE: Chapter 885: Grrruuumble
There’s something strange about Katakuri being surprised with Luffy’s realization of his Gear Fourth running out of time and his mumbling of “a power up with a time-limit eh?” If he’s using his COO at that time, he wouldn’t have that kind of reaction.
He saw far enough ahead to see Luffy fizzle and leave G4, but couldn't know exactly why. It's only when Luffy says aloud that the has a time limit, Katakuri became aware that it was an inherent weakness in the G4 ability
Katakuri can look into the future, but not that far into the future. During the fight, he was looking roughly 5-10 seconds ahead.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
Although that got me thinking--Is Katakuri able to alter the future after witnessing it? Did mentioning the shrivelling prevent a different future of Luffy not running away from Katakuri before it was too late?
-
RE: Chapter 885: Grrruuumble
@.access:
Talking about candy weaknesses, though, did Luffy just forgot that he should use fire against it? Last time Perospero tried to block his way he simply Hawk'd the hell out of the candy as he knew what he was doing, but now he went to Gear 3rd instead. Is Haki needed to use Hawk and I'm not aware?
As far as I'm aware, Luffy always uses haki armament in tandem with the Hawk attacks, so I would be not at all surprised that haki is necessary to use it.
If Sanji will end up fighting Owen and not Daifuku I will be really dissapointed…
On a side note, I'll be disappointed if no one fights Mont-d'Or. You don't introduce a DF power that almighty, and not have someone (Luffy?) overcome and beat it later down the line

RE: Steven Universe
Knowing Cartoon Network's usual level of incompetence, they'll probably leak sometime over the next week.
Boom. It happened.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
! So instead of just reviewing this set of episodes since this wrapped up Season 4 I wanted to discuss the overall season. A lot of fans seem to consider Season 4 the weakest season, which is an opinion I share but I wanted to go into depth about this.
! Looking at the previous seasons I think the reason why Season 4 seemed a bit lackluster was for several reasons:
! 1. A Lack of Urgency-
Even with Season 1 there was a gradual ominous tone with the Gems fearing that Homeworld was going to come back. Even going back to Mirror Gem their reactions were one of terror. Throughout Season 2 we had them dealing with Malachite/Peridot/the Cluster, and there was Jasper’s presence on Earth during Season 3. Here the Gems seem to almost too complacent and quite a few online reviewers have pointed out that it seems slightly OOC for them. Going back to Season 1, any type of loose end that would alert their presence to Homeworld was treated with the utmost seriousness and gravity. It just seems odd that in Season 4 when their actions have put them more “on the radar” that they don’t seem phased. It’s especially concerning when Pearl said they should get the Rubies out of space (which seemed more like an afterthought) and Garnet reacted calmly to Ruby re-acquiring their ship. I feel like this was a big flaw in how the Crewinverse handled the writing for this season.
! 2. Gems Being Pushed Into Background/Less Stronger Beach City Episodes-
Every season we get major strides in the Gem’s emotional development and progress about the Beach City characters. Here it feels like they are used at plot devices to get the story from point A to B. Now the main reason is that a lot of their emotional arcs were resolved throughout Season 3 but it still feels like their flatter here than the majority of the series with the exception of “Last One Out Of Beach City”. Even the day-to-day Beach City episodes seem less memorable, and don’t feel as rewatchable as they did in the previous seasons.
! 3. Less Songs/Fusions/Regenerations/Development of Steven’s Moveset-
Each season we seem to get a nice mixture of all of these but this season the musical element has really been lacking. Usually we get on average about 6 or 7 songs each season but here we only got three: Here Comes A Thought, I Could Never Be Ready, and What’s The Use of Feeling Blue. Mind you all three where extremely good and anticipated but still the lack of songs diminished the surprise musical element that was always present.
! That wasn’t the only thing lacking. Despite having more Gems in the show there weren’t any new fusions, regenerations and even Steven’s growing abilities seemed stagnated. Really the biggest thing that has happened was Peridot learning how the bubble.
! 4. Setting Up High Expectations But Only Giving Us Nuggets of Plot Development-
After it was a huge reveal the Rose shattered Pink Diamond we all thought that this was going to be what this season was going to focus on. While we did quite a bit of Steven’s reactions to this the Gems reduced roles meant also giving no new information on exactly what happened. Of course this set up the first bomb from this season but still it feels like very little moved things forward.
! 5. Fandom Burnout- The fandom of this show can be it’s own worst enemy and I think a lot of the people who lauded this show so heavily started to drop off when the pedestal they put this show on seemed less validated. I know the group of friend I usually watch the show with we just kind of dropped it this season (we still keep with it but not together). I think this is a regular occurrence in most fandoms where they get out of the “honeymoon” phase of the show and it becomes more normal for them.
! That’s not to say this season was irrelevant. We do get decent expansion on Steven’s emotional development and his relationship with his family. The few times we do utilize Lapis and Peridot their arcs continue to be the bright spot. Still, overall there was a very “buying for time” aspect to this season and despite the game changing reveals in the two bombs it does feel like the writing, plotting and pacing could have been a little tighter.
! Having seen the next 6 episodes, I can say that very little has changed there and that, aside from the previous 4 "Lars in Space" episodes. It seems very reminiscent of Season 4 so far. Spoilers if you haven't seen these episodes.
!
! 1. Oh boy, this is still an issue. They get back to Earth and strangely just seem to be trying to pretend nothing has happened. "Dewey Wins" acknowledge Lars is lost in space, but aside from one other episode where Katie is worried about him, it's pretty much brushed off that "he's fine" where not even Steven devotes much time even talking about him. No, this batch other than than focusing on Peridot and starting a band with the cool kids (!?) is focused on a completely manufactured conflict between Steven and Connie that should have been one episode but is dragged out to all 6 (and completely tossed in the backseat in "Sadie Killer–that one really felt out of place).
! "Raising the Barn" is seemingly the only exception because Lapis and Peridot are treating the situation with the seriousness that everyone else in the show should be. Townies are either more preoccupied with dumping on the mayor for having the town be subject to an alien abduction and potential invasion of a hostile or just completely going about their normal routine like nothing happened. The rest of the gems are also no more and seemingly less invested in prepping for this. Peridot ends up getting distracted and preoccupied with Lapis ditching Earth so the overall danger gets again put into the backseat.
! 2. Still very true. Only real exception is Peridot, who actually got some character development in these episodes and is no longer an otaku roomate living in a barn. Seems like she is on the road to becoming a real Crystal Gem rather than the tagalong she's been stuck being since becoming good. The rest of the gems are mostly completely in the background. Lapis has some focus, but she virtually bails the series (again) and is now completely in the background. Amethyst gets a bone in "Back to the Kindergarten", but that is mostly a Peridot episode with Amethyst just being along for the ride.
! Townie stuff is still true. The Cool Kids remain boring, Dewey Wins is a pointless distraction. However, Sadie Killer (once it focuses on Sadie) and Kevin's Party (by the memorability and fleshing out of Kevin alone) are among the better townie eps.
! 3. Still true here, mostly. No training or prep, and only one fusion to easily vanquish a blink-and-you-miss-it corrupted gem using one attack. Sadies song in Sadie Killer, however, was a notable exception.
! 4. Very true with this batch. We learn nothing new about Homeworld or the Diamonds or how they plan to fight back or even how Lars is going to get back home. It's all completely at the wayside. There aren't even any breadcrumbs. Just waiting and navel-gazing.
! 5. I agree this is CN's fault, but aside from Peridot fans, this batch will do very little to appease those on the fence about this series or are having diminishing returns overall.
! The whole Connie / Steven business almost works better as a metaphor of this. Connie, who represents the present day fan getting tired of Steven & Co's (the show's) blase attitude with brushing aside the plot and treating it like no big deal for several episodes only to still be clinging on in the end to see it to the end, unable to truly break away and instead racks herself in grief in anger and disappointment.
! Even Steven's apology sort of reflects this "I let them take me away, maybe forever, then I came back and acted like it was no big deal. But it was a big deal!" Could've fooled me, Steven. -
RE: Chapter 885: Grrruuumble
More interesting is the implication that the deliciousness of the cake can kill a regular person merely by tasting the frosting and thinking about it too much afterward.
-
RE: Chapter 885: Grrruuumble
Funny to see Luffy simply bail out of the fight, and that Katakuri aided him in reminding him that he was about to reach his end. Of course, Luffy flat out tells him he has a 10 minute time limit. Not really sure why he did that other than being an idiot.
Katakuri is hype again because he even claims he is "invincible" when calm. Not disproven in this chapter, though Luffy may or may not come up with a way. I mean, Katakuri is trapped in Mirro-world so Luffy doesn't even have to defeat him as long as he has Brulee though I imagine he will fight him once the limit up
Also, Luffy seems to be handling his 10 min wait period well enough–he has only lost his haki and is not that much weaker otherwise. Though the madness that is Nut Island is clearly too much for him.
Now Sanji is about to leave the kitchen. Does that mean he's going to take care of Oven? Or will they be able to bluff their way past to the ship? At any rate, it seems that Sanji will be on the move from here on out and should at least see some action while defending/delivering the cake to Mom
Lastly, it seems we will finally see Smoothie in true action, either against the SHs or the Firetank crew. Seems more like they will encounter the Sunny based on how the two-page spread is laid out.
-
RE: 812: ''Chateau Infiltration - Steal the Road Poneglyph!''
@Miss:
But the more important topic I'd like to discuss today is this:
That took me right out of the episode. Just so wrong…
-
RE: 810: ''The Adventure Ends - Sanji's Determined Proposal''
The Sanji/Pudding scene was handled very well, and I think it was a direction mistake to cut away from it as much as they did to the Enraged Army and Mirro-world stuff. These parts should have been self-contained in this episode.
It also looks like we are going to see a lot of fighting filler in the upcoming episodes. No confirmation it will even conclude in 811. -
RE: One Piece Chapter 882: Outside of a Yonko’s expectations
So now that I think about it, there should be some pay off to Tamago's character after the focus he's gotten since the start of this arc. I doubt he's gonna fight, so perhaps, given his respect for SHs, he could be the one to propose joining forces with them when Mama's rampage gets out of hand? Smoothie would likely follow him, and with her likely the rest of the family (only Katakuri is above her right now, and who knows what's gonna happen to him in the next few hours).
I can definitely see this. In his case, it is more likely both after his observations in this chapter and that Tomago has no blood ties with Big Mom herself. However, in Tomago's case, it seems he might also end up joining up with the Firetank Pirates given that they both seem to share similar philosophies. Either way, he seems likely to lean toward the winning team as Big Mom's crew will likely be humiliated after all this is over. Pekoms seemed to have unshakable loyalty to Big Mom, but Pedro's sacrifice will probably be his tipping point where he returns to Zou afterward
As for other crew members, it is possible. After all, Linlin and Chiffon went rogue earlier (though the latter was essentially kicked out first) and Praline & Pudding's overall loyalty to Mom's crew is in question right now. Others may abandon the crew, but it seems too early to suggest anyone else notable.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---

He is a Sweet Commander, though. Him, Smoothie and Cracker (and, before fighting Urouge, Snack)
Yeah, deleted the comment shortly after I posted it, thanks for pointing it out. Somehow, I forgot that he was already a Sweet commander.
-
RE: One Piece Chapter 882: Outside of a Yonko’s expectations
If anything, this chapter confirms that both Katakuri and Luffy are using CoO throughout the fight.
As for Gear 4th, it is unclear if Katakuri can copy it just yet, but IF he can, perhaps Luffy hopes to use the ability's weakness against Katakuri? Meaning that Katakuri may in all likelihood get his haki tapped out too, just like Luffy? If Katakuri can outright copy it, his Haki should reach a limit as well, though perhaps the limit isn't the same as Luffy's.
@.access:
Katakuri's line about death was a response to Luffy's last line in the previous chapter. He ended the chapter with the most cliché line main characters throw in this kind of situation "I won't/can't die here" as if it means something, as if you can avoid to die by refusing to, as if your will has power against death (or destiny, since it is Katakuri we are talking about), and Katakuri answered in the lines of "yeah, that's how death works. You don't die because you want to". His answer was not supposed to twist something, but to answer this common line by stating how obviously misguided it is. It works exactly because it is stating the obvious.
As for his line about Luffy dodging his attacks, I didn't read it as smugness, but rather as a surprise compliment. Luffy was talking about how hard it was fighting Katakuri, but he was actually talking to himself, he was not directing those words at Katakuri. Katakuri, on the other hand, answered directly to Luffy, saying "yeah, this is hard for me too, you are the first person giving me this trouble". He was actually honestly complimenting Luffy, it just added to this general air that he is actually a good guy.
In someone else's mouth I could read it as bloating, but Katakuri is not the kind to do that (he actually seemed embarrassed when Brulee did it for him).Yes, Katakuri has grown on me in this chapter and this one has given a bit more grounding of his character. Katakuri's matter-of-fact reply to Luffy's defiant declaration was definitely a good one, quotable even. Moreso, the chapter has Brulee hype up Katakuri because Katakuri is somewhat modest as clearly shown here, telling Brulee calmly to shut up, mid-hype.
So far, Katakuri seems to mostly resemble Vergo in that aside from his tight-lipped quasi-modesty, his most definitng trait aside from his battle prowess is an unwavering loyalty without any other defining motivation (yet revealed). Rob Lucci and Magellan had some other personal codes and ideals they held up alongside their loyalty to the WG, but as with Vergo unflinching loyalty to his crew is so far is sole motivation.

RE: ''Episode of East Blue: Luffy and His Four Companions' Grand Adventure''
One thing, though. I thought some cover stories were supposed to be animated. What happened with that?
Yeah, what about that? From what was implied, they were not part of the special itself, but an additional bonus tribute to the series.
Did they air yesterday? Are they saving those for the home video release? Or was it fake news?
-
RE: "Episode of East Blue" anime special, plus manga cover stories, coming August 26
They did a decade ago, when I regularly watched the anime. I'm guessing that hasn't been true for a long time though.
There was "Episode 0" with Shiki though that was mostly canon.
-
RE: 802: ''Sanji's Anger - The Germa 66's Secret''
On-screed blood tends to depend on which animation director is in charge at the time. Maybe there has been a recent crackdown, I don't know, but I recall the Abdullah & Jeet intro episode being even bloodier than the manga, and some of the Dressrosa episodes were still not shy about showing it.
But, remember, we also got that cleaned up Inuarashi and Nekomamushi torture sequence so it should not come as too much of a surprise here.
@Dropper has made a great thread that contains comparisons between broadcast version and blu-ray version (http://apforums.net/showthread.php?t=45206) and we can easily find that in blu-ray version there are more bloods.
Those changes are very rare and usually a response to a very recent tragic event that happened during production. Outisde of these rare instances that Dropper provided, there is never any difference between broadcast and blu-ray/DVD.
-
RE: One Piece and Dragon Ball TV Specials this Fall
One thing of note is that this will probably the the first crossover with the Super cast & crew. Also, a crossover at least makes sense with Super now that multiple universes are shown as extant. Sure, it would not be canon obviously but at least it can now have a believable set-up

RE: One piece treasure cruise (7/11 Never Forget)
There was no turtle rush yesterday

RE: Chapter 875: A Woman's Honor
Fun chapter with some great character moments. Barto moment was absolute gold and even Chiffon had a very nice moment here. Happily looking forward to a steady stream of chapters again.
Also looks like we are getting the first Chopper fight in the longest time. Also looking forward to the inevitable gags (is sweet-loving Chopper their natural enemy??)
-
RE: Game of Thrones (tv show thread)
Very happy a quality leak happened. Stayed up to 2am for that HD leak on /r/freefolk to happen wondering weather it was an elaborate hoax or they were going to deliver.
I'm not that big of a fan of the series, but this season has been great. Too bad there is only one more episode left until the long winter.
-
RE: Ducktales- new series! Woohoo!
There is very little connecting the first part to the second and it would seem to make the premiere an hour long came late in production, as the only connecting tissue is Donald being hired by Glomgold at the end of the first part and the opening is intact and later moving in with Scrooge at the end of the second.
It is a little disappointing that the series didn't start off with a full multi-ep arcing story, but it's only in hindsight as I didn't mind while watching. Then again, I didn't know it was suppose to be an hour long special, but just the two episodes back to back.
-
RE: Ducktales- new series! Woohoo!
First off, it looks like they got rid of Duckworth, possibly my favorite character in the original series. I think he's gone for plot reasons (the first episode shows McDuck Manor as a run-down dump) or he'll be hired in the future now that hes back in the groove and has a public to impress again. In this show it seems like Launchpad is his go-to hired help for unknown reasons aside from Mrs Beakley being in charge of the manor.
Got used to the voices. Considering there are absolutely zero returning VAs from the show (that I know of) it takes time to adjust to the new voices. Since this is essentially two episodes stitched together, I noticed the voices settled in during the second one
The Gravity Falls influence is notable, but it fits. Scrooge as someone who's burned out on past adventuring and eventually retired for mysterious reasons, presumably because he became the richest duck (and being) in the world and rested on his laurels in a Howard Hughes style reclusiveness, but after meeting his nephews he gets the itch of treasure seeking again But is there more?. As such he starts out a bit closer to his first comics appearance as a reclusive cranky old duck
What we have not yet seen of Scrooge is his classic miserliness, obsessing over small change, framing his first dime, that sort of thing though I'm sure it will happen in the future.
I'm also glad Donald is actually in the show now instead of being mostly in the navy and having rare cameos. Now it seems like he'll actually be living with Scrooge. Glad to see since it annoyed me to see him sidelined in the show at a time where next to nothing was done with the character in animation otherwise.
Webby I am glad is given a better reword since even as a kid she grated on me with the whole sickeningly sweet low-rent Shirley Temple act. Aging her up to be closer to the nephews seems to be a better move, though I'm sincerely hoping there are no romantic subplots relating to the kids in the future.
Noticing right away they are adding more character diversity into the duck world. While ducks and dogs will be predominant, we've got vultures, wolves and different duck colors. So it would seem there would be more bird-person and dog-person variety in this show, with dog/wolf people actually having furrier faces and hair color other than black.
As for the first villain outing, they have Glomgold nailed. I've always seen his as essentially as an evil Scrooge, motivated solely by greed and ego. Basically Scrooge with no endearing traits or motives but still a delightfully selfish character.

RE: One piece treasure cruise (7/11 Never Forget)
Got G-5 Smoker. The rest were dupes.

RE: One piece treasure cruise (7/11 Never Forget)
I got Jozu, who was a MIA since I started the game up until now. That was very surprising, certainly didn't expect getting him in a free pull.
Everyone else is either a dupe or a trash unit. (Base Luffy seems to always appear during a free pull week…)

RE: One Piece Chapter 874 - King Baum
Great One Piece chapter, the stuff with Zeus and King Baum is just classic. Pure One Piece.
There will be some 1-on-1 action when they get to the Sunny. They would not show that scene with Katikuri if the SH weren't going to reach that blockade. So they are definitely going to escape the island and make it pretty far out to sea.
Also, I'm not even sure that Sanji will take part in the baking of that cake. It is Chiffon's cake and the BM Pirates will be the ones helping gathering the ingredients. Unless of course the Chiffon cake is ruined and a back-up is needed.

RE: Death Note
I also do not like how it seems they gave Kira a motive of revenge because he was bullied. Seems real cheap compared to the source material, where Kira was a bored youth who grew a god complex once he was given power a mortal should not possess. Seeing his descent from well-meaning vigilante to egotistical monster was very interesting to see. This movie certainly seems to be going down a more cliched route.
I also agree that Ryuk is more interesting as a mere observer of this . Him being a more Faustian "devil" character actively trying to coax Kira is just less interesting overall
Also, I don't care at all that it was taken out of Japan. The story works in any urban 1st world setting.

RE: Ducktales- new series! Woohoo!
If Darkwing is going to be in the show, does that mean we will also see a return of "The Masked Mallard", Scrooge's crime-fighting alter ego?
I am also hoping this means there are plans for a legit Darkwing series reboot. Doesn't feel right having the cast be regulated to only being secondary Ducktales characters (besides Launchpad).
Though of note is that Darkwings design seems to have changed very little compared to the main Ducktales cast.

RE: One Piece Live-Adaptation Drama Announced
Oda really, REALLY likes Game of Thrones.
Live actors means you cast older, purely due the pressures of filming full time and because if it does last any time at all, they're going to age noticeably. It's also just much easier to take them seriously as conquer the world badasses in their early 20's than around 15.
Good point. Maybe they will be teens after all.

RE: One Piece Live-Adaptation Drama Announced
It's pretty obvious there's no way it could simply follow the source material vertabim–only certain parts and many of the insane or stylized characters will either be dropped or heavily modified.
It would have to be it's own thing. The SH crew must remain as central to the series and they must be looking for Gol D Roger's treasure, but the plotline will likely be overhauled to include the important elements--the Navy, the WG, the pirates, the Warlords. It will no doubt be shortened the world-building much smaller in scope
I mean, Franky will likely look much more in human proportion and may or may not wear a speedo. Maybe just short pants.
Also, I expect the outright cartoon elements will be toned down. There's just no way truly adapt those elements aside from a miracle. Some slapstick sure, but nothing beyond that.
Whom I am certain will be in such an adaptation
The SHs, Crocodile, Garp, Ace, Alvida, Buggy, Vivi, Smoker, Akainu, Sengoku, Zeff, Daz Bones, Rob Lucci, Boa Hancock, Shanks, Morgan (good opener foe), Blackbeard & Whitebeard
Unsure about
Arlong (and fishmen in general), Wapol, Bon Clay (heavily toned down), the giants, Enel, every other CP9 character, Kuma & Pacifistas (they may be scrapped), Rayleigh, Mr 3, Coby, Doflamingo
Virtually no chance
Moria & Co, Gaimon, Pearl, Meow-ban Brothers, Most of Enel's priests, Foxy, Wanze & co, animals like the Kung fu Dugongs & Yokozuna, Ivankov
That is all IF this both gets made and lasts more than one season. Very unlikely it will be that long of a series unless it does absurdly well
Lastly, the Japanese-sounding names will likely be changed to be more English. There aren't many Japanese-sounding names in One Piece, but they will likely be altered to be more English-friendly. Also, as mentioned, the shounen tropes like attack-naming will likely be dropped entirely save for rare instances

There we go. I have been trying to think about what most captures the spirit of One Piece out there and Guardians of the Galaxy probably comes closest.
That is definitely the closest modern-day equivalent. And I think that the teenage crew members will be aged-up slightly toward more of a 20-something band of pirates (save Chopper), though the atmosphere will be less dark overall considering it will take place on the open seas and more brightly lit exotic locales

RE: One Piece Live-Adaptation Drama Announced
This at least sounds more legit than the first alleged live-action series which came from a shadier source. Though I still won't fully believe this until we get proof this is in active development.
Okay I think this is a mistake but my reasoning is this…
Look no matter how divisive the recent adaptations of both Ghost in the Shell and Death Note have been it still makes sense why they chose to make American adaptations given the atmosphere, sensibilities and structure of the source product. Also Japan is on this weird live action high where we've seen Attack on Titan, Kenshin, Assassination Classroom, FMA all get live action adaptions so if they did decide to do One Piece that would make sense.
But this announcement has NO logic. One Piece was recently the sacrificial lamb on the Toonami block because it wasn't getting the numbers to sustain its presence on the block. It has always been cited as hard to get into because of it's weird art style so WHY of all things is this getting a live action American TV series attempt?! While it has been established as "well known" enough in the American anime fandom not to THIS point. This just doesn't make a lot of sense.
This Japan-based article gives more details, though I'm not sure how accurate it is
A statement from Adelstein was also presented, in which the producer said that he has been a fan of One Piece for 20 years
Either this statement is a total fabrication or Marty Adelstein is a major fan of this series. In other words, his attachment to the series is largely why he is putting money into it (allegedly). The "20 years" frame is most likely false given the series didn't really have much of an English speaking fandom until more than a few years into the series.
Oda went on to say that he has placed a condition upon the live-action project, specifically that it “absolutely not betray the fans who have supported the franchise for 20 years.”
While it is not guarantee, this statement seems to indicate this series will avoid a fate similar to Dragon Ball Evolution and it won't be One Piece In Name Only.
producer hopes to make “most expensive TV series ever produced.”
Wow, certainly looks like this show won't be cheaply done, that's for sure. Hope it pays off. Makes it sound like a passion project. Not so much hopeful but curious to see how this plays out.
So is he going to do a full series right off the bat or just be making a pilot for network TV?
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
One last thing--a drama? I would like to think of a One Piece series as having a bit of a lighter adventure tone since the series is as outright comedic as it is melodramatic. Hoping that was mentioned in error or are very loose with the definition

RE: Rocko's Modern Life is getting a tv movie
Now this preview makes it look like a pilot for a reboot. As in they're angling for the actual series to come back.
Also, teh art being different is not too much of a surprise. This looks more clear that Joe Murray is having more influence on the look of the show, so it will look more like Season 1.
In also looks like it will be more in tune with the early season of the show, when Joe Murray had more direct involvement–Rocko struggling to cope with in a modern hell-scape where very little goes right for the little guy. The show veered away from that in later seasons into more random bizarre scenarios.
I always thought it worked for this series because the cartooniness kept it from being too depressing or having it taken too seriously.

RE: Chapter 873: Trapped like Sweets in a Cage
I also do not want Big Mom to be an ally by any stretch. She should continue to be a rival to Luffy and prefer she retained her dream of ruling the seas up until Luffy himself makes it clear that she can't surpass him and his own dream.
To simply have her relinquish her goals from eating a cake that is so good that they are entirely off the hook is a bit much, even for this series. If she was a side character like Don Chinjao, that would be one thing, but she is a major player in the series.
I am thinking more that the SHs will still end up escaping the island and Big Mom will be even more obsessed over the SHs not only for the humiliation they gave her but in believing that Sanji is an even greater chef than Stuessen and wanting him be forever be part of her crew for his sweets-making talent.
I mean it's not like she forgave or rewarded Jinbei for ending her hunger frenzy, and still merely entertained
Also, Pudding rearranging Big Mom's personality just like that would be a too much also, first due to having one omnipotent DF ability essentially be a Younkou-beater. I would like to think that Big Mom's haki and overall power would not allow her to be victim to such a cheap OP ability (not to mention her innate 6th sense). It would also pretty much rob Luffy of his goal of surpassing Big Mom on his terms. Which is why Law didn't even toy with the possibility of his DF ability affecting Doflamingo until his physically impaled him with his sword later on.

RE: Chapter 873: Trapped like Sweets in a Cage
Loving how this is turning out.
I did not like "cake theory" initially, but the groundwork laid and the nail-biting scenario laid out here is great. I know a cake will be made and Big Mom will eat it, but the journey to that conclusion looks like it will be a blast.
I mean, just that last panel is horrifying. There's no way that Sanji is going to just pull a cake out of his ass next chapter–they need a kitchen and the right ingredients and the SH ship is mostly bereft of even basic ingredients in general thanks to Luffy. The ingredients that we know about lay on a whole separate island.
Next chapter looks to be very exciting. Luffy looks like he might be able to stall Big Mom physically, for maybe a minute, and there's no way they will be able to convince Big Mom there is no cake otherwise until she kills them and lays ruin to their ship. They are going to have to keep her at bay somehow.
Meanwhile it looks like we may see some Firetank vs Pudding action. Either the Firetanks evade Pudding, or Chiffon is captured and the Firetanks contact the SHs to help them save Capone's beloved wife–which in turn will clue them in on what the Big Mom Pirates are planning.

RE: One Pace
Except every adaptation of anything in history does this. Doesn't make it wrong. To animation, to Hollywood blockbusters.
A lot of them even benefited from such techniques. Never the less I'm fine with them getting the pace treatment , just feel it's largely unnecessary.
Best to compare it to the recent One Piece episodes. Compared to them, the early episodes in One Piece took a lot of creative liberties compared to the new ones. The new episodes, if you discount filler and padding and occasional censorship, are much more manga faithful in their content.
Early arcs like Syrup Island take some comparatively large and seemingly random changes from the manga events. I'm not just talking about sequencing, which still happens in the modern episodes, but randomly changing character actions and events and choosing NOT to adapt several panels in the manga for no clear reason. Very unusual for the modern day, because they virtually always adapt every single panel nowadays.
In addition to pacing, the One Pace project has also had a keen focus on manga faithfulness. That is with an asterisk–whenever it can be fixed without ugly music edits. As such, some padding and filler content still remains in parts of One Pace in addition to out-of-order sequencing when clean editing simply isn't feasible. But the goal is to improve it whenever possible.
The end game is to do One Pace adaptations of the whole series, so Syrup Island was going to be done sooner or later

RE: 797: ''A Big Shot! Commander Cracker Appears''
from the preview, it looks like next week will have stiff animation. i hope im wrong.
Next episode will feature the dream team of Ueda/Deguchi, sooo expectations are not high. Deguchi has had some good key animators working for him these days, so its not quite as bad as it would have been a few years ago. Though I can't recall the last time he was paired up with Ueda
The weakness of both does show in that preview, though it's not too bad, like, we've seen worse this arc. If the animation in anything beyond sluggish and choppy, I'll be content

RE: Chapter 871: "Go Caesar!"
Is Smoothie a lesbian? She always goes straight for the females looking excited to squeeze them snd drink there juice. She even had a female option to drink at he beginning of the wedding but no male.
Her going after Reiju isn't unusual since she's one of the few crew members (only one?) who can touch her without being permanently affected by the poison. It was established two chapters that she's effectively immune so long as her latent power is active.

RE: One piece treasure cruise (7/11 Never Forget)
Holy shit, I lucked out on single pulls. Legend rate up is legit!
1st pull: TS Luffy!
2nd-8th Dupes + Veggie pirates swarm
9th pull TS Brook
10th pull Akainu!!That makes a dozen legends so far. Lack of new units is expected since I now have a large percentage of available RRs. Conspicuous lack of the Marine wave, though.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
More pulls: Some dupes, but got Momonga, Gladius (finally!), TS Usopp, Van Auger, and Tsuru as new units. Not bad, not bad...

RE: Chapter 871: "Go Caesar!"
I do agree that the cake theory is very unlikely at this point. Perhaps in the alluded future encounter they might form a "sweets plan" of sorts, but right now there really isn't a good reason to go that route. Even if Big Mom goes on a food rampage randomly, itself something I doubt given Mom now has a lot bigger things going on to fixate her rage on, the SHs & Co would just see that as an opportunity to escape given the rampage would no longer be directed at them and leave the Big Mom Pirates to sort it out on their own.
-
RE: Chapter 871: "Go Caesar!"
Sanji is going to have nightmares about that genie guy.
He doesn't seem to fare well against those guys with full-body haki (hint-hint, Sanji)
Also Du Feld has to be dead now. Shot by an assassin and having a mountain fall on him…
-
RE: Chapter 871: "Go Caesar!"
This isn't the first time Luffy was holding his own and then had a chapter end with his utter defeat. Remember Punk Hazard? There's a good possibility we get a partial flashback of the fight, like with Caesar and Crocodile to show just how he lost. Or maybe not, like Brook vs Big Mom.
But this chapter looks like it is setting up a future rematch with Big Mom. When this will happen is anyone's guess, but maybe this is setting up an Elbaf arc where Big Mom is involved in some way?
Also, I was correct that the bomb would lead to a castle collapse. Will this lead to a few choice 1-on-1s? I know Big Mom will be nigh unstoppable but the others might be fair game in the confusion now that they can't gang up on the crew & co.
