@Shiebs IIRC she had her crew in the non-canon cameo fest Stampede for whatever that's worth. Might be nothing, who knows if Toei would even care to consult Oda over a small detail like that.

Final SH will be "that person" Caribou has been talking to for a decade, Oda said it to me in a dream

RE: Next Straw Hat Crewmates (Vol. 9 - Yamato vs. The World)
@Zik said in Next Straw Hat Crewmates (Vol. 9 - Yamato vs. The World):
LOL @ Carrot being the most realistic possible candidate left to join. I thought the past few chaps wrapped all of that up.
Carrot having this duke role randomly foisted upon her with the other minks dangling her dead mentor over her head, the scene ending with a worried expression on her face as she says "Pedro..." instead of a yes/no answer, and her not even getting a goodbye scene with the people she adventured with for an entire arc is literally the opposite of wrapped up.
I have no special fondness for Carrot but even I am expecting a sudden band-aid flashback with her after Oda gave one to Marco+Yamato. And I understand why the Carrot for Nakama gang feels some newfound hope because her """"""conclusion"""""" in 1057 was very weird otherwise.

Repostin my Vivi opinion from a spoiler thread
I think Vivi is the most logical "final nakama" candidate at this point and my only gripe with her is a superficial one. That being she's the progenitor Namiclone and that issue is gonna become 10x more apparent if they're ever on panel together again in black & white now that they have the same hair length. Also the same height which was true before. Literally the only thing that's gonna differentiate them is Viv shows slightly more forehead.

RE: Next Straw Hat Crewmates (Vol. 9 - Yamato vs. The World)
@Deicide Yeah I know he keeps reinforcing the 10 thing. I'm just wondering if he is genuinely struggling to settle on an idea for the last member. I can't rationalize a reason for Yamato's existence apart from something cynical like "trolling" or "merch sales" otherwise.
-
RE: Next Straw Hat Crewmates (Vol. 9 - Yamato vs. The World)
Since Oda's early concept sketch of the crew showed only 10 members including Luffy that he clearly had some ideas for even if they ended up changing over time, but he's sort of pigeonholed himself into all of the readers expecting 11 (Luffy+10 nakama as stated at the beginning of the series), I wonder if Carrot and Yamato were pure experiments for him to try to find the right final piece. And he ended up getting tired with them/thinking they were the wrong fit. They do have a lot of superficial similarities both being genki brawler girls that are naive about the outside world and have cool furry transformations. If this is the case then I wonder if
A) He will make yet another attempt at this archetype in the next arc with minor adjustments
B) He will realize this type of character just isn't meshing and the next experiment will go in a totally different direction
C) He gives up and either has Jinbei be the final or brings back Vivi. -

Jesus. I know Hayami is basically the biggest and trendiest female seiyuu right now so I tossed around the idea in my head but didn't think it'd actually happened.
! And I think unfortunately for some people the fact that it's not an older veteran seiyuu might severely hurt the chances of a certain something happening.

RE: Next Straw Hat Crewmates (Vol. 8 - Onigashima)
I've looked back at all of Caribou's appearances in light of him showing up again in recent chapters, and I unironically think he would be a favorite contender among readers if he was slightly less evil and his design wasn't so gross. Maybe Sanji could give him kick surgery à la Duval .

RE: Next Straw Hat Crewmates (Vol. 8 - Onigashima)
I guess Ryoko Shiraishi is Bao? I thought she would've been the perfect Yamato.
In similar news Mitsuishi is back in the recording studio along with Zoro/Sanji/Usopp/Luffy's VAs for some reason and the idea of reusing Hancock's seiyuu for Yamato is literally my worst nightmare. No offense to Hammock herself though. -

RE: Next Straw Hat Crewmates (Vol. 8 - Onigashima)
@Mike:
We then learn in chapter 1000 that Yamato has been aware and interested in Luffy before he even set sail. This makes it possible for Yamato to have followed and logged Luffy’s adventure from the beginning. Of course, Yamato would not have been able to document the specifics, but the documentation of Luffy’s general journey is possible.
That's literally Barto's whole gimmick. He's been obsessively following the SHs since Loguetown, knows the truth of all their travels including incidents that the WG covered up (Alabasta/EL), and has been keeping memorabilia to commemorate them. The only upper hand Yamato has in this area is knowing about a vague "the dawn" prophecy. Yamato might've been aware of Luffy's existence first but I'm not sure how they could possibly document his journey before he started hitting the papers. And even then I'm hesitant to call any of this logging in the same vein as what Oden did, because it's just copying information from a secondhand source.

RE: Next Straw Hat Crewmates (Vol. 8 - Onigashima)
Robin's fruit is the flower flower fruit. Yeah Oda threw in some flower petals to make it look nice and make sense, but that's not a name you would ever normally come up with for a "copy body parts" power. "Clone" or "copy" or "double" or something would have been the easy go-tos. He had to put some real thought into it to arrive at "flower". Its very nice and poetic and it works because Oda make it work artistically, but it's NOT simple and straightforward. If Oda had the number convention in mind by that point, (nd brook having the Yomi was going to be something he thought of ahead of time) that was pretty much the time he would have needed to start thinking weird to made things work since Luffy and Chopper were locked in. ..
I was referring to how to read the numbers represented by the syllables in the DF names. Not the powers or name meaning.

RE: Next Straw Hat Crewmates (Vol. 8 - Onigashima)
And this is why us non-native speakers shouldn't try to guess word play puns that have a crazy ammount of variation based on even the parts of the word and their spelling. Too vast and easily stretched.
Oda has actually been very simple with the crew's DFs and even Sunny Go's name which only use the basic onyomi/kunyomi readings. The reason that there's a debate with Yamato and people trying to guess all these non-standard puns is that from what I can tell there's no possible onyomi/kunyomi zoan name that fits the pattern. So people are theorizing some out of the ordinary zoan or even veering into paramecia. Neko was the most popular because ko is kunyomi and ne was stretching a bit but not unprecedented in Japanese wordplay.

I have no idea who the heck is engaged in bets now, what the punishment terms are, etc, but once this is all said and done I'd like to see that one Big Chungus Carrot edit show up in the loser's avatar/signature no matter what side they were rooting for because it never fails to make me smile (speaking as someone who likes Carrot but doesn't really envision them joining)

RE: Next Straw Hat Crewmates (Vol. 8 - Onigashima)
My Japanese skills are basic so I don't see how tsuki fits the 2-9 pattern. When are 2 and 9 being read as tsu and ki respectively?
Tsu is a straight transliteration from English. I saw ki in a goroawase chart somewhere ages ago but can't find the image right now. It may not be standard but I'm sure there's some way to read it that way considering a lot of Japanese fans have used ki=9 in their own theorycrafting for years.
-
RE: Next Straw Hat Crewmates (Vol. 8 - Onigashima)
After the release of the recent chapter in Japan, I've seen a few Japanese fans theorize that Yamato could have a tsuki tsuki (moon) no mi that allows the user to do Sulong transformations at any time and would also fit the 2-9 pattern. I don't think it's particularly likely but I'd like it immortalized in writing here that someone else called it in case Oda goes the wacky route and that's actually the fruit

RE: Chapter 1,019: Heliceratops
Can't find anything about Kotobuki. Is it spelled that way?
The ears and flame things draped around the arms look right but a Kotobuki has a snake tail instead of a fluffy one in all the art I've seen
!
-
RE: Chapter 1,019: Heliceratops
My thought process on Yamato's fruit that no one asked for:
Before this chapter I thought Byakko would fit most thematically because of dragon vs tiger myths. But there are no stripes and the ears/tail are wrong so I'm setting that side. My next guesses would be
1. Kirin. I've seen some people say "there are no hooves" but Dalton didn't have them on his hands either. Also seen the number of horns brought up, but I don't think there's any hard and fast rules that Oda abides by there. Pay Pay loses his horns in his zoan form, Ulti keeps hers, Kaido keeps his original ones in addition to growing normal dragon horns, and Sasaki keeps the same number of horns but they become darker and change shape to be more Triceratops like. Out of all these I think Yamato is most similar to Sasaki, because their horns move position from the sides of the head to the forehead and go from being very curved to more straight.
The ear shape and placement right besides the eyes also says to me deer/giraffe family more than anything else.
2. Some sort of dog/fox. The tail is nice and fluffy. Also it'd give Momo a more prominent dog companion for the Momotarou parallel. I originally thought Inuarashi obviously filled the role, but he hasn't been given much emphasis if Oda is really wanting to lean into the myth instead of just giving superficial nods to it.
3. Koma koma fruit that let's Yamato transform into any amalgamation of the koma species found on Wano.
I'm not 100% committed to any of these because ultimately the fruit name/species/design all comes down to what Oda thinks looks coolest.Greg's comment implied that whatever he really is isn't currently a popular theory, so I'll go with "other".
I'm not sure why Greg's word is being given that much weight. Or if he does have insider information about chapters yet to release why he'd be allowed to tease it on forums without getting fired. Hasn't he been flat out wrong about stuff like traitor Kanjuro?

RE: Vivre Card: One Piece Visual Dictionary
I know that isn't a manga panel but it still reminds me of how Oda's depiction of youth has varied wildly over the years. 13 year old Law was comically chibi compared to 13 year old Lucci, and I don't think it's entirely the white lead's fault considering Baby 5 didn't change size as that flashback sped through 1-2 years either.
-
RE: Next Straw Hat Crewmates (Vol. 8 - Onigashima)
I’ll collect the panels later when I have time but your theory/pattern doesn’t work if it only applies to a few members. “Join the crew” wasn’t used for everyone so that it hasn’t been used with Yamato yet doesn’t mean something’s up with that plot thread.
Edit: No actually, the burden of proof is on you to provide sources when all current members have used the phrase "join the crew" or are asked
What? "Join the crew" is pretty much the universal English translation that subs/manga scans use which is why I mentioned it, but the point I'm trying to get at is that in Japanese the word nakama is always used in a proposal whether someone is asking Luffy or Luffy is asking them. Whether it's worded as "become my nakama/can I be your nakama/let me be your nakama/we're already nakama (to Usopp in Syrup village)/etc". You can youtube "___ joins" for every character and hear the original Japanese dialogue. I'm not saying that'll never happen for Yamato. I'm just saying it's an interesting choice of words so far, more so compared to the cases where someone else is asking Luffy. God knows it's subject to change because this arc still has a lot of chapters left; I even brought up a possibility that it's being done intentionally so that a moment where Yamato finally asks "Can I be your nakama" instead of "Can I board your ship/go out to sea with you" has more impact. This scenario is just assuming they're the one to give the final proposal instead of Luffy, which would be in line with how proactive they've been on bringing up the subject so far.
-
RE: Next Straw Hat Crewmates (Vol. 8 - Onigashima)
I went back and reread/rewatched the scenes where everyone else gets asked/asks to be part of the crew to refresh my memory since this is the first time in a while a lot of people agree that a stand-out candidate has popped up. What I found interesting is the choice of words. Whether the member is asking Luffy (Brook at the end of TB, Robin, Usopp asking to come back after the breakup) or Luffy is asking them, the phrase "be my/your nakama" (English translations turning this into "join the crew") is always used. Meanwhile Oda seems to be conscientious to so far have Yamato say "board your ship" or "go out to sea with him". In my theory-crafting mind this could point to a couple of possible outcomes:
A) These smaller moments are leading to contrast a bigger moment near the end of the arc where Yamato or Luffy phrases the proposal properly. Or B) the Oda is a troll option, where Yamato does technically board the ship with them to the next island, presumably Elbaf, but more in a tag-along capacity which now that I look back on post-TS has become exceedingly common between arcs. I think the only point that didn't have a stowaway or guest was getting from FI to PH. Now what direction Oda would take Yamato in this hypothetical I have no idea. Maybe they become best buddies with Loki or something [h=3][/h]

RE: Next Straw Hat Crewmates (Vol. 8 - Onigashima)
reads page 363
People still care about the Vivre Cards like they matter in any meta-analysis perspective? I thought in one of the earliest releases they were already making dumb mistakes like saying was Corazon was 200 cms taller than Oda stated he was. -
RE: Next Straw Hat Crewmates (Vol. 8 - Onigashima)
Okay how about this, if no characters end up joining this arc then who, of the characters we already know about, or have a least been mentioned, have a possibility of joining?
People like Bonney, Kuma, Crocodile, Vegapunk etc.
In my ideal world Gastino joins as the final nakama with the job of the crew's punching bag, because every scene where CC gets bullied is gold.

RE: General Anime Discussion Thread
I know it's not current but dang. Recently been rewatching some PH and Dressrosa. I followed the anime weekly during those arcs but even I had almost forgotten how abysmal the animation/art quality got at points.
I'm almost convinced that DR in particular was so poorly done that Toei was threatened with losing the rights to OP which led to the huge spike in quality in subsequent arcs.

RE: Next Straw Hat Crewmates (Vol. 8 - Onigashima)
I don't know if VA choice plays into anyone's meta analysis or whatever it's called, but some people are speculating that Yamato might be played by Ryoko Shiraishi (who I really like). Luffy's actress recently posted on her blog about meeting her. She did the same thing with Yamachan before Rosinante was announced.
! Notice the OP volumes framed perfectly between them
I've always wonder if Oda gives friendly warnings to Toei like "Hey, this character will be in the story for a while so when casting make sure to ask if they mind sticking around the anime for 10+ more years" -
RE: Next Straw Hat Crewmates (Vol. 8 - Onigashima)
No new crewmate NEEDS interaction with the crew before joining. Look at Brook. Luffy asked him to join to everyone's surprise before anyone had really interacted with him. This was even repeated during the party after Thriller Bark. Oda loves his hijinks at the crew's expense.
Brook took back his initial acceptance of Luffy's invitation saying "Actually I have other things do to here nvm" and only said yes again as a done deal after a whole arc of shenanigans together
-
RE: Next Straw Hat Crewmates (Vol. 8 - Onigashima)
Would a white Tiger devil fruit fit the 2.9 devil fruit theory
The ko part of neko neko no mi model Byakko does. The ne part doesn't fit into the two standard types of reading that Oda has used so far.
Though I'm sure there are variant pronunciations that recognize ne as 2. That's because Japanese is very flexible in that regard. For example February 22nd became known as Cat day because "Hey, 2 is ni which sort of resembles the nya sound cats make!" I'm pretty sure Baby 5 fits the pattern too if different pronunciation is used. I'm gonna quote some chart I read a while ago here, "Variants of readings may be produced through consonant voicing or gemination, vowel lengthening, and the insertion of the nasal mora n. This is the reason you may notice sounds which are not commonly used to reference numbers."
-
RE: Next Straw Hat Crewmates (Vol. 8 - Onigashima)
I think Oda can easily wave away the issue of the fruit being overpowered if he writes a new user (if there ever is one) as being a complete newb without good control over it.
-
RE: Next Straw Hat Crewmates (Vol. 8 - Onigashima)
@Zik:

RE: Next Straw Hat Crewmates (Vol. 8 - Onigashima)
The character COULDN'T be introduced before we knew Oden, and have it mean anything. And the imprisonment meant he obviously couldn't interact in the first part.
I'm not sure I follow. Oda could most definitely have dropped the "Kaidou has a kid" info way earlier in the arc. Like flash to a couple of panels that show a masked figure imprisoned as Kaidou briefly talks about his disappointment of a son. We could know of Yamato's existence well beforehand, in ways that don't require showing Yamato interacting with others in present time, and still save the reveal of them being an Oden LARPer for when they finally break out and meet Luffy.
-
RE: Next Straw Hat Crewmates (Vol. 8 - Onigashima)
Haven't been to one of these threads in years but felt compelled to post after catching up on Wano.
Yamato feels really weird as a contender for me. They have a lot of classic components that make me say "I can see why people strongly believe Yamato will be the next crewmate". But I can't get over how terribly late in the arc Oda introduced the character and with absolutely no hint of their existence beforehand. It genuinely feels like Oda just came up with them overnight, and I like to imagine he puts more thought/foreshadowing into next nakama material.
-
RE: Next Straw Hat Crewmates (Vol. 8 - Onigashima)
@Dorobō:
I'll say the one subtle change in terms of design that would help Yamoto look less like Nami is if she had fuller lips. Like Viola's. Sort of a mix between the Nami and Robin design types would go a long way.
I'll hold on to hope that her face gets brutalized after rebelling against Kaidou for the last time or something and she gets a cool scar like that one dude from Magi.
Who am I kidding that's not Oda's style at all -
RE: Next Straw Hat Crewmates (Vol. 8 - Onigashima)
I'll echo what other people have said, it doesn't seem like Oda put much effort/thought into Yamato's design so I can't see her joining the crew. Yeah she has horns and height but the all important facial area which Oda loves to emphasize for emotional impact or wacky expressions is way too close to Nami. Which is a huge shame since I like the concept of a tomboy oni.
-
RE: Next Straw Hat Crewmates (Vol. 8 - Onigashima)
You're comparing a character that's been around for nearly 8 years
8 years
God someone stop time I swear I remember the spoilers for the chapters where he was still a shadow/silhouette like yesterday

RE: Next Straw Hat Crewmates (Vol. 8 - Onigashima)
Yuki is 9.2, so not exactly the 2.9 pattern that will add to 'San Ni Go' but like I said, I'm still wishful cuz it means Oda would be willing to kill Monet. Dead characters should be dead.
How does yu-ki read as 9-2? Even after looking at really obscure possible readings on goroawase compilation sites I've never seen yu/ki being spun as 9/2
-
RE: Next Straw Hat Crewmates (Vol. 8 - Onigashima)
The paw fruit is a hack/plot fruit just like Perona's, Hancock's, Viola's, Sugar's, etc. Being able to launch your opponent to another island hundreds of miles away is an instant "I win" power that the SHs don't enjoy.
Eh Oda can is imaginative and could write around that however he wants
-
RE: Next Straw Hat Crewmates (Vol. 8 - Onigashima)
I guess I'm in the minority but I'm seeing all these people on different forums saying Yamato "inherited" Oden's will in the same vein as Luffy/Ace, Chopper/Hiluluk, Franky/Tom. etc. I think that does a disservice to the latter relationships since, as far as we can tell Yamato just thought Oden was cool and never even interacted with the guy. When compared to every other relationship crewmembers have with their respective family/mentor figures it's incredibly shallow. It's like saying pre-Dressrosa Barto had "inherited Luffy's will"
-
RE: Next Straw Hat Crewmates (Vol. 8 - Onigashima)
Anyway I still believe the last nakama will be whoever gets the paw fruit, assuming it passed on at all considering Kuma is in a weird braindead cyborg limbo. Sayonara to anyone who doesn't have it :ninja:
-
RE: Next Straw Hat Crewmates (Vol. 8 - Onigashima)
I have my bet, but talking about that now is pointless, as no one will agree. Sufice to say it's a long standing female character Luffy owes a great debt to. She hasn't appeared for a long time, but will suddenly have a big importance and nowhere to go.
I too agree that Kokoro is a strong final nakama candidate
-
RE: Next Straw Hat Crewmates (Vol. 7 - Wano)
This is just my own irrelevant preference but even if we ignore the Namiface, Yamato is too tall for my liking after like 4 giant nakama in a row (relatively in Robin's case since she's way above average for a female). Need some more manlet/womanlet representation
-
RE: Next Straw Hat Crewmates (Vol. 7 - Wano)
Yamato will fulfill the vital crew role of "Oden fanboy" so that even after we've left Wano, Oda can remind us through Yamato at least once a chapter of how amazing Oden was.
"Wow Luffy what you just did was really cool! Reminds me of a time Oden did something similar only he did it way cooler!"
