      you guys do remember that Zoro only had 2 swords when he fought Ryuuma right?

      also you do remember that Zoro pulled off what is arguably his strongest attack against Odz right? 3000 realms, the one he tried to pull off against Mihawk back in East Blue.

      @myogatheflea:

      What are you talking about? Go back and reread chapter 100 and then come back complaining.

      Well I dont know if it was intentional or not, but the Strawhats technically didnt go through Reverse Mountain until ch. 101. They left Loguetown in Ch. 100 and was heading to reverse mountain, and the chapter ended with them announcing their dreams/goals with their foot on the barrel. Still a great way to mark the 100th chapter.

      Big eater? I got big spender.

      Ya that makes much more sense.

      In the FrankyHouse scanlation they say big spender.

      In Binktopia's they say big eater.

      Don't know which is right.

      Both say he so I dont think they are refering to Bonney, though Im assuming they translations meant she.

      Probably completely unrelated but I think Apoo might have some reference or inspired from one of the villians in Rurouni Kenshin.

      As we know Oda worked under the author of Rurouni Kenshin and in one arc there was one guy who belonged to a clan or something that emphasized on prolonging their arms. He was cool 🙂

      Read it so long ago, hard to remember his name and what not.

      @Greg:

      'kun' isn't just an affectionate term. It's commonly used when talking to children which is exactly what Sanji is doing there. They're talking down to him as a little kid that tends to wander off and get lost. Many of my students are 17-18 but in class we use 'kun' to officially call on them.

      And since he didn't die in the scene, he definitely isn't dead.

      Ah thanks for the clear up.

      Wow that pirate died a quiet violent death, he was blown up then shot.
      Did Sanji really refer to Zoro as Zoro-kun?! Was that a mistranslation?
      Could someone tell me what creature the old Tenryuubito has on a leash, it seems too big to be a fish man.

      Someone correct me if I am wrong, but I think he called him Zoro-kun cause he was afraid Zoro overheard him say he is a "slave to love." Knowing how much they insult each other, he panicked.

    • RE: On death and dying

      @Greg:

      I'll have to disagree.

      There are moments when I just need to look at his pictures to cry but all of those involve death or the death of someone close to the character at hand. His most emotional scenes are a direct result of death.

      I still don't think he NEEDS it, but it would help if he grew up a little bit and used it later on. Death can be a remarkably lame tool when you overuse it or use it when it's expected (Naruto) but if someone like Oda were to buckle up and use it well (like he's proven he can) it would be very effective.

      If Oda ever does kill a Strawhat, it will be Luffy. He will never kill anyone else. He wouldn't do that to the individual character fans. That said, I doubt he will ever do that.

      Without a doubt, the most emotional scenes in the manga for me were the death of Bellemerre, Hiruluk, and Rumba pirates.
      Another worthy mention is Norland.

      (I never like the flashback argument. Sure most deaths occur in a flashback but a death is a death. Rather its more like deaths occur in the flashbacks because those respective stories use it to be all that more powerful.)

      These characters needed to die to have such an impact. Characters like Pell and Pagaya? No they didnt need to die because I doubt their deaths would have invoked nearly as strong as a response as those above. So keeping Pell and Pagaya alive were justifiable reasons and well something I personally prefer.

      Thanks for the responses guys, it was nice to hear your opinions.

    • On death and dying

      Ok first off, before FFA comes barging in screaming that people in One Piece do die, this thread isn't about that.

      Its simply quite obvious that there have been deaths in One Piece (not just flashbacks).

      Edit:
      ie) Higuma, Mr. 11 etc etc (got Mr.7 mixed with Mr.11)

      Also this isn't just about the recent pirate getting a collar explosion and shot lying face down in the ground. Rather its from the multitude of responses I seem to be reading.

      As we know, Oda himself doesn't like having people dying in One Piece. Still there are a abundance of fans that hate this fact. Haters of the manga even often use this fact when calling One Piece too "childish"

      So my question to you is, do you think that Oda should submit to the growing demand of more deaths in One Piece, or stick to his pacifist view on killing?
      I am with the latter. If Oda prefers not to have his characters killed, then I think he should stick with it. It's his manga, and if he wants to deviate from how most shounen mangas do it, then DO IT!

      Obviously, the manga is starting to get more violent and serious, as with the New World and such. Regardless, I still stick with my opinion. There are a bunch of deaths in other shounen mangas already and considering how well One Piece is doing already, I say just leave it be.

      @Greg:

      Although a good collection of available data, way too much 'assuming' going on. We can't do that for factual debates on series canon.

      Again, great job gathering the data, but in no way can we know for certain unless it's specified by the author.

      Your right and I completely agree.

      Also an idea just popped up in my head too. Take a look at the cover stories, because they run coherently with the main story as well. Although even harder to document, its apparent that not much time passes by. For example, Ace's, Coby and Hemelpo's, Jango and Fullbodys, Hatchi, Enel's, etc, etc

    • RE: Ultimate Time-Line of the Grandline (Updated Mar, 2012)

      @Greg:

      From the start of the journey is an entirely different issue.

      We simply have no idea how much time was wasted, used well or simply passed while in East Blue. It is notoriously poorly documented compared to everything post Logue Town which JUST so happens to be when we get our landmark for the series, Roger's death 22 years ago.

      Again, nothing to do with the time spent in GL.

      I posted this a page back, and hoping that it was just unnoticed:

      http://www.apforums.net/showthread.php?t=11367

      but your right, not nearly as nicely documented as GL, and probably irrelevant to this thread. I know its not very nicely formatted, and also whenever I tried to post it the lines kept squishing back together adding to the bad format.

      Someone once said that the trip time is somewhat like the novel, Around the World in 80 days. Although I dont think there is any relevance, it shows that 2 months is plenty of time.

      This is the tale of the man who will be Pirate King. It will be all that much more impressive to transverse the Grandline in such a short time, especially when compared to other pirates.

      Anyone else think that Robin's nostalgia to Binks Sake has some implications to her past?

      Well we know she has been a pirate for quite a while and Im looking at 2 possibilities,

      1. she has heard it on at least one of the many pirate ships she has been on

      or

      1. childhood memories, from maybe her father singing it to her? assuming that her father was a pirate

      Although 1 is more likely, her memories of the song were positive, not negative, and so maybe the recollections of her memory are not from 1 because those experiences seemed to be pretty negative (flashback at EL). So Im hoping for 2.

      Also this song seems to be a somewhat cheerful song, and I doubt the "evil" pirates she worked for would play the song. It seems more cheerful, sung by the olden pirates, ie Shanks crew and Brookes crew (both somewhat cheerful crews)

      To me Kuma seems more of a one man army, capable of taking down a multitude of oponents but even more deadly when its mano to mano.

      Moria on the other hand seems to be more of a strategist and uses his wits + power to win.

      That being said, mano to mano, if they were pitted against each other without warning, I think Kuma would win.

      @_Meh_:

      In any ordinary pirate crew, First Mate would be either the Navigator or the Quartermaster (In charge of rations and pay), with the rank of Captain held by whichever one of these two was not First Mate. In One Piece, the title of First Mate seems to go to whichever crewman possesses a combination of wits, brawn, and charisma second only to the Captain's. As of the publication of One Piece Yellow, Zoro's position is listed as 'Fighter'. Draw your own conclusions.

      Ya because then Luffy really should be captain

      It was never stated that Zoro is the first mate. However in times of critical importance, it seems that Zoro is perhaps the most level headed, ie Aoi Koji, the crisis with Luffy and Usopp, and among others. (along with Robin). However Im not sure if he is really "second captain" material as hes somewhat of a lone wolf.
