      How come no one's ever mentioned this site before?!

      Hey, thanks for the promotion! I'm glad you like the site.

      Naruto has been pretty abysmal lately. Fortunately, Bleach has compensated for it by actually being good recently, which is a surprise considering its troubled past.

      Also, I feel the need to point out that the title of this thread is excellent.

      To be clear, my comparison of those goals was looking at each of them strictly at the beginning of each of their respective series, and how they served as motivation for those protagonists to begin their adventures. Certainly, the way those goals have evolved over time is vastly different, as are the circumstances surrounding their actual achievement. As the original impetus for each of them to go on their journeys, though, I do consider them to serve the same role. From that point on, that original goal is less relevant to the actual characters themselves, because they obviously have a variety of pressing matters at hand, and more relevant to the audience, whose connection to those characters was formed because of that original goal. The greater point I was trying to make is that, even if the meeting between Gon and Ging wasn't uncharacteristic of either of them, the way the meeting took place somewhat betrayed our expectations as readers that we've had since the beginning of the series.

      Anyway, I really appreciate your feedback. Thanks for the compliment, and thanks for reading!

      1. Its a gag series rather than an ongoing story, so he can stockpile story ideas, and even entire chapters in advance. Plus, he doesn't have to orchestrate fight scenes or balance a large cast in any given chapter.

      Since people from this forum were kind enough to promote and discuss my article on the 2010 hiatus in the last iteration of this thread, I thought it would be worth de-lurking to inform you that I've written an article on this latest hiatus:

      Another Hiatus for Hunter x Hunter

      The article examines the plot developments of the last 30 chapters, and, like last time, features some interesting statistics regarding all the time Togashi has missed. (Just in case, please be aware that the article also contains spoilers for chapters 311-340.)

      On a more personal note, I seriously hope this hiatus won't last as long as the last one. I'm excited to see where the new plot is going from here, so this break comes at an awful time.

      @Greg:

      A great article BUT I question the legitimacy regarding OP's breaks. I counted at LEAST 22 breaks since 2003 (and that's not counting every issue for 2003-2005).I heard Oda worked straight for some ridiculous amount of time but even so I'm not sure that adds up.

      First, thank you very much for the compliment.

      Secondly, I did my research regarding breaks here. If you're the same Greg I've seen in the OP section, then you can navigate this site far better than I can, but for anyone interested, the section on the left labeled "ジャンプ連載順位" with a bunch of years under it is a collection of charts of Shonen Jump tables of contents. With those charts (plus my own chart, which does cover the part of 2010 that this website has not yet included), I counted the absences for OP, Naruto, and KochiKame myself to attempt to prevent any errors, but feel free to double check; if I have made an error, I'll be happy to correct it.

      Thanks for reading. Here's hoping HxH returns soon.

    • RE: Things make One Piece unique from other manga

      The attention to detail over such an epic scale.

      There are many other mangaka who can create an incredibly detailed story, with seemingly minor events/conversations/characters proving later to be important, but I can't think of any whose stories and worlds are this huge. I can remember the excitement when I visited these forums around chapter 500 and someone posted a picture of Silvers Rayleigh way back in the beginning of the story; Oda provides an experience outside of reading the manga itself.

      OP, next time you want to start a 'serious discussion,' do enough research to provide your own strong opinion. You didn't start a discussion, you asked others to.

      Robin's and Usopp's dialogue does absolutely nothing to dissuade the notion that One Piece and the Rio Poneglyph are the same thing. They're the ones who don't know anything about either of the two; if anything, the dialogue would more properly set up the plot twist that One Piece and the Rio Poneglyph are the same.

      Interesting plot development. Diverse characters. Intricately-written and -designed arcs.

      You know what would not be so Oda?

      @slayerlx:

      I get what your saying, but wouldn't it be so Oda just to put that into the SBS, and then provoke this argument with this bracelet, when this bracelet actually does have meaning? That would be so Oda.

      The reason why we're constantly impressed by Oda is because he takes the story in directions we did not expect. If every little plot twist in One Piece could be predicted as easily as this, "Oda" wouldn't be a complimentary adjective.

    • RE: Poorly Written?

      Just browsed through the thread again, and I'm a little surprised. I'm also of the opinion that it cheapened the story a little that both Pell and Pagaya survived, but…

      Am I the only one who found Pagaya's survival worse?

      At least Pell was a strong fighter. Pagaya was an ordinary citizen. Plus, not to attempt to compare the destructive power of a bomb versus lightning, but at least Pell would have had the opportunity to move away from the blast near the last instant, given that he can fly. Pagaya had no means to avoid an attack so quick.

      I don't even particularly mind that either of them lived, but I find Pagaya's survival far less plausible.

      My most glaring issue with One Piece is that it has to share a magazine with Bleach and Naruto.

    • RE: Introducing: Gears (Not like Luffy's gears)

      shrug, it's not that the idea is bad or anything, but this is fanfiction stuff. I'm all for discussions and predictions, but creating new ideas for someone else's work is awkward, even if said ideas are decent or even good. In essence, this is no different than if I were to say, "Hey, I think the Strawhats should go to a candy island and fight candy monsters and save the candy princess!!" My example is obviously stupid, but the principle is the same.

      (Of course, if you were to make your own story with these gears, their similarity to Dials might bring you some negative feedback, too. Can't win.)

      For specific feedback as relating to OP, though:

      1. Charge Gear - Too much like Impact/Reject, and Douriki is only a measurement of physical strength, not something that could be channeled.

      2. Optical Gear - Too futuristic for OP.

      3. Vibro Gear - A little too futuristic, or maybe just not in line with the Odaverse, but it just feels out of place. Who would use it?

      4. Thrust Gear - You even mention that it's already been done.

      5. Leap Gear - …I guess this one's fine, though I don't really see a purpose to it.

      6. Lift Gear - See, it sounds like you have a character you're designing in mind for this and the last gear.

      7. Boom Dial (Dial? I thought these were Gears) - Kinda cheesy if the user is punching/kicking the air, and if the user is punching a surface that is then destroyed by the shockwave... well, aren't most of our heroes strong enough to do that already?

      A common problem when people are writing ideas for fanfiction is that they try to make everything they come up with sound really great by comparing it to instances that the reader knows. "...at a speed even faster than Lucci's Soru," "Much higher than they could achieve with Geppou." Not everything new has to be better than what the last villain could do.

      Anyway.

      Isn't it also possible that the WG values Garp because he's related to Dragon (and now Luffy)? The WG's view on the Monkey family may never be fully explained, but until it is, I would hesitate to assume that they would expel Garp upon learning of his family (if they don't already know). They may wish to use him to have easier access to Dragon and Luffy.

      Without the DF, he'd still have his strength and spirit. He's fueled by his dream and his loyalty to his nakama anyway; I'd imagine that, even if he wasn't rubber, he'd still progress like a Zoro or Sanji. Would Luffy stand a chance against [any given major arc villain] if you took his current self and took away his DF powers? Probably not, but that wouldn't have been the case. He would have had grown as a fighter without DF abilities. I still think he would have been able to beat each arc villain, except for Enel.

      I agree with Fire Fist Ace. Franky's reason to join just got at least half as impactful, and his dream can be fulfilled without him being present. At this point, I wouldn't be surprised to see Franky build the Strawhats' next ship, but then stay with Iceburg, while Paulie joins the crew and takes care of Franky's ship.

      Well. Maybe.

    • RE: Crewman number 9

      Couple things.

      1. I don't see why everyone has to think up these ridiculous scenarios about what secondary characters will join, simply based on Robin. Oda's already (more than) proven that he is not a one-trick pony. Is it possible that someone other than Franky will join at the end of this arc? Of course it is, but that doesn't make it likely. We've seen one arc with an unexpected character join versus five where the new crewmate was obvious. Just because Robin is the freshest in our memories doesn't mean her joining is the template for all future crew members.

      2. The musician thing… has always been a joke. If Luffy ever does find a musician, I would expect him/her to come last. When they were on their way to Usopp's village, they talked about how they needed a chef, and Luffy added "a musician." When discussing shipwrights, same thing. It's a running gag, which I could see be fulfilled, but I think Oda would let it run much longer than now.

      (And please, enough about Franky also being a musician.)

      @Yuhara_sama:

      If this does happen, Luffy and Croc could team up for the common goal of taking out the WG Then after talking with Luffy, Croc decides to change his ways and becomes an ally with the SH along with the rest of BW.

      Luffy's goal isn't to destroy the World Government; it's to save Robin. Yes, that means challenging CP9 and beating Spandam, but Luffy is only "against" the Marines by default, because they chase him for being a pirate.

      Regardless, I find the idea of Luffy voluntarily joining forces with Crocodile ridiculous. After all the cruel things Crocodile did to Alabasta, but more specifically to Luffy's nakama in Vivi, I don't see how Luffy would ever choose to work with Crocodile. The most I could see happening if they did meet in Impel Down would be an uneasy ceasefire out of coincidence, simply because each of them would (independently) be trying to escape and would be too busy to fight each other. That said, I think the story is moving forward far too well to bring back old villains at this point. Maybe they'd meet much later, when Crocodile has had time to escape, regain a crew, and continue along the Grand Line (just as the same could be said about Buggy / Kuro / Don Krieg, or maybe if Enel returns from his voyage), but I don't see it happening now.
