RE: The One Piece/Dragon Ball Debate (UPDATE: Part 2)
One Piece easily destroys Dragon Ball (and most other long running shonen series) in this department.
I like how the podcast mentioned G8 being an entertaining side arc. I also like how they brought up the number of plotholes some of the fillers produced (things like Zoro cutting through steel, etc.)
@Karate:
Dragonball filler is one of the most wretched things in the world.
No. Naruto's fillers made my head explode… Seriously, airing filler for almost two straight years should have been a cardinal sin. I would've had more respect for the series had they decided to take a two year hiatus instead of torturing the fanbase.

RE: The One Piece/Dragon Ball Debate (UPDATE: Part 2)
I don't get why people make such a big deal of Toriyama "forgetting" about Tao Pai Pai when that was just the man being the typical, humble japanese.
That interview gave me the impression that he was feeling pretty uncomfortable with Oda fawning all over him..Thank you. While I think Oda obviously has the better attitude and mindset as a creator, I don't understand why everyone is beating up on Toriyama. I couldn't help but notice during the interview that Oda came off as some obnoxious fanboy (which is no secret), while Toriyama was trying hard to give him polite responses without getting too sarcastic.
Not only did he not have as many assistants, but Akira Toriyama also continued to be an Art Director for multiple video game projects, and still managed to find time developing one-shot comics, so it wasn't like he didn't have a strong work ethic.
It seems like Akira Toriyama had a work overload, and became legitimately frusturated when his editors and fans couldn't accept the endings he tried to give to a series that he created. I totally understand that you should give the fans what they want. However, it also appears that the fanbase was being disrespectful towards his work, and doing a disservice to Toriyama. Thus resulting in him forming some sort of resentment towards Dragon Ball in the process.
With all the he's accomplished in his career, and with him not getting any older, I can totally understand why Toriyama acts the way that he does.

RE: What is Your favorite One Piece episode?
Not really an episode, but the fight where Luffy, Sanji and Usopp team up to take on Satori (think it was around 160-163).
Why?
-
Luffy, Sanji and Usopp all have distinctly unique personalities, which lead to some great character interaction
-
Satori's laugh always gets me.
-
Usopp failing with his 'USOPP AAAAHHHH!' was a classic scene
-
Luffy tying down Satori while Sanji crushes his skull in was pretty satisfying.

RE: Which Straw Hat member do you think has the most tragic backstory?
I'm glad that Yonkou and Mushroom Spore illustrated the tragedy Brooke underwent. Spending a straight 50 indefinite years of solitary confinement in the fog sounds like hell itself.
Think about it. No human contact (or artificial computer/tv contact), no food, or any opportunities to get laid for half a century sounds much more tragic than anything the rest of the crew had ever endured. In return, you are rewarded with a decayed appearance that would probably scare away most people. That is, except for Luffy .
There is a reason why Brooke has been reduced to being a perverted lunatic with a general lack of manners. I wish the anime would have done a better job illustrating this, rather than having him come off as some sort of annoying Pokemon.
Robin is obviously the runner-up after Brooke. The only other stories that actually moved me we Chopper and Nami's, and I think that was because of how well the presentation was in the anime. Franky's desperation would be next.
After that, I would say Sanji and Usopp are tied. Starvation is not a pretty thing. Starving to death on a deserted island isn't good on the psyche. Raising yourself as a child is pretty tough as well, but I'm assuming that Usopp at least took over his parent's home and managed to feed himself and made the best of it. Also, he came across a girl who was attracted to him and later offered him a ship, so life didn't totally suck for Usopp.
On the bottom would be Zoro and Luffy. It appears that one of the reasons as to why Zoro carries his tough guy persona is because of the lost of a friend he well respected. Aside from the strawhat given to him, Luffy doesn't seem the type to allow his past to haunt him.
Cliffs: Who had it worse? Brooke > Robin > Nami > Chopper > Sanji/Usopp > Zoro > Luffy

Before this gets closed or moved, it flashily has to be Buggy.

RE: A Study of One Piece Animation
I wouldn't rage at Tate working on an episode, because it seems like he is still putting a bit of effort towards his work. The only time I would be upset with an animator is if their art is flat out icky, or if they've been blatantly lazy with their work.
What's cool about One Piece's animation now is that it kind of hearkens back to the days of when Warner Bros. animated shorts were being handled by different directors.
Tex Avery, Chuck Jones, Bob Clampett, Friz Freeling, Bob McKinson all had their own unique animation flare and style. They also managed to obtain a certain level of dignity and respect for their work. Sure, some directors may be objectively better than others, but the number of different approaches is what gave Looney Tunes a whole new level of entertainment.
I am pleased to see One Piece taking this route. To me, art and animation in anime tends to be on the mundane and redundant side of things. It's great to see OP rebel from this mold.

RE: Sanji (OP) vs Spike (Bebop)
Sanji is a pretty original character. I bet Oda made him up.
That's kinda funny, because I was watching the original Lupin III series recently, and noticed a character that looked almost exactly like Sanji. It's too similar to be a coincidence:

RE: Oda's INSPIRATION for One Piece
Sanji Inspiration?
Blonde haired guy with one eye covered, smoking a cigarette, wearing a suit and tie from Lupin III Season 1 (Green Jacket Series, 1971), Episode 10.
Brook Inspiration?
Afro skeleton wearing a top hat in the graffiti background in Alex's stage from Street Fighter III: New Generation (1997).
