@MushroomBoy:
im gonna be critisized fer what im gonna say here.
i think it would help the story if chopper DID die.
now, under THESE circumstances, no, it wouldn't, he really didn't have a final werd or owning.
but if tyhings went basically the same way-franky blasting him into the sea- but then fer some unknown reason, franky can't save him, and chopper dies.
IN MY OPINION, one of the one piece characters needs to die. not because i dislike any of them, simply because so far, the whole series has always had happy endings. pell getting blown up by the bomb, but-low and behold, happy ending- he survives!
SOMEONE big needs to die- maybe not chopper, but maybe robin…y'know, they go through this massive series of fights, all for nothing.
SIMPLY A THOUGHT, don't go calling me an idiot because of this realistic idea i have.
all in all, one piece is way to fairy tale-ish, in the sense that no BIG good guys die.
You said it yourself,the story has happy endings. But all the starting points are filled with sadness and pain. i.e. :
Zoro & Kuina's Death
Sanji & starving on an island
Nami & her tragic past with arlong
Usopp & his obsession with lying since his mother died
Chopper & Dr. Hiluluk's explosion :P
Robin & the ohara incident
These backstories act as a focal point for the Crew's dreams. So yes, it is a fairytale, but a fairytale that talks about dreams. How from a threshold of pain the main characters can get past themselves and fulfill their dreams.
But how will that be possible if a crewmember dies? Sure it'll add a more mature theme to the series and the death element that lacks in the present era, but that's not what One Piece is about. One Piece is about reaching your goals and getting "there", to the place that your greatest ambitions are met.
And that point in the One Piece storyline, is the end of their journey, where I think ALL dreams will be fulfilled and everyone's story has had closure – RAFTEL.
