RE: Ultimate Time-Line of the Grandline (Updated Mar, 2012)
It also doesn't help that half the boats in this series are fictional types of ships >>;;
Actually finding the velocity of even a fictional ship is possible (and just as hard as with a real ship). You can just integrate euler's equation with respect to the sail angle if you can come up with some dP to fit the volume. But I dont think its that easy. You can find your dP using Bernoulli's equation. All you then need to do is find some dimensions and you could get something surprisingly accurate.
P + 1/2rV^2 + gh = C –-> lift force which can be expressed as:
dP/dn = rV^(2/R)Didn't know that dictionaries had differing opinions on the same word, so forgive me for trying to come up with something a little concrete. And I do think that there was a particularly large break during the Skypeia party. I don't know why, but I imagine that days long party to be almost 2weeks long.
Yea actually my dictionary (oxford) just has a very ambiguous definition:
1)more than two but not many. -

I find the swiss way more logical then the classic way. It still sound slame when they say it though.

RE: Ultimate Time-Line of the Grandline (Updated Mar, 2012)
The problem with that statement is that there is nothing that refutes the facts here (although I never knew that about Hogwarts thanks for sharing). Apparently, even the moon phases back up Oda's timeline so far, according to another thread.
Something that someone else stated and was apparently ignored was that if you take into consideration Alabasta's Eternal Pose allowing them to skip at least an island and that Skypeia is a moving island in the sky, the Strawhat's probably moved much farther
ahead than most other people who didn't have an eternal pose or decided to actually go to a sky island.Well actually you can calculate alot of things. If you want I can give you a rather precise estimate of how fast they are moving based on their sail size. And well once you can do that, you can figure out anything. But applying physics to manga does not really work well.
Also on a side not, I looked up the birthday stuff and it looks as if it does not have anything to do with the plot. Since Oda just made them up in an SBS–hell he even has random people give out birhdays.
I'm sure since it's such a generic word, every one has their own opinion as to what "several" means, but I'm going to follow the dictionary rather than my own opinion on the term since no one here really knows Oda's preference.
Depends which dictionary you look it up on :-) But I agree; no one does know what Oda is thinking. Well I didn't mean all of the breaks were that long, I just meant they could last up to that amount. I think the larger amounts would probably fill the end of the mega arcs.

RE: Ultimate Time-Line of the Grandline (Updated Mar, 2012)
Um, http://www.apforums.net/showthread.php?t=11994&highlight=character+birthday
Ah so we do know. I'll check it out.
Yeah, and 'several' and 'few' are a fuckload less than 4 months.
I never said that GL takes place in six months, please don't put words into my mouth. Don't straw man me.
I already addressed this. Because he's leaving breathing room for the inevitable filler material. That way it makes sense for young viewers and readers.
Actually it leaves breathing room for ANYTHING.
But of course. I don't think anyone doesn't agree with that. But getting months out of a few or several days? Please.
Months maybe not, but weeks, yes. Again don't straw man me.
Again, as I've said from the start, it's nothing but a selfish notion. Because you have a feel for it doesn't mean Oda does. It doesn't mean he's basing his story on your experiences sailing or your idea of how long it should take.
Does anyone on the Forum even think a few days means more than a week, let alone 11 days? I'm just curious.
And now you are red herring me, thats nice. Again you bring up a moot point because he aint basing it off of yours either.
How is that selfish? Its not like i'm lacking consideration for others or that my speculation somehow profits me at the cost of anyone else. How the story resonates to the reader is what matters. And if the idea that 3-4 days does not resonates with me but does so with you then thats fine. Guess what, you don't know what Oda is thinking. And neither do I.
Yes when I refer to an event that takes place anywhere near 3-13 days–withholding 7--I refer to it as several. Or do you refer to 11 days as "a week and 4 days"? Several is relative to quantity, and I think with days a threshold like that holds up fine.

RE: Change of style?
Chopper and Usopp have both changed noticeably from their original looks. Look at the first few chapters of Usopp. I don't think it lasted long, but he didn't look as good.
Oda's artstyle has changed all around, and everyone looks different from way back, but those two really stand out for me when I see their introductory arcs.
Yea Usopp and Chopper went through some pretty big changes. But i'm surprised so one mentioned Nami:
Back then:

RE: Ultimate Time-Line of the Grandline (Updated Mar, 2012)
Do we even know what their birthdays are?
Also he reason Oda uses "several" is because it's ambiguous. But then again I don't know japanese so I can't really comment. I think they mentioned Nami's foster birthday is her flashback. Then again they don't really seem the type to celebrate birthdays.
But again, my point is that the way he uses time seems to have more to do with stylistic pacing then it does with keeping track of the calendar.
You asked why use several instead of week:
- A week is a measurable amount like "a dozen", so if he is using time to pace the story; using an ambiguous amount would make sense, since it lets the reader adjust to the pace on their on volition.
- Your argument also works the other way around; why not be precise?
- It is not set in stone, well not exactly at least. For the grandline portion we do know that there is definitely a minimum amount of days. And to accept that, you must also accept that there is a maximum value.
I personally see the maximum as being increments of 11ish days for sailing making the GL time closer to 3 month then 54 days. The reason I tend favor a longer sailing time is that I did a lot of sailing back when I was a kid and I have a general feel for it.
What we do know is that 1 year has not gone by. Which makes sense because the one year mark is both a landmark and there is he birthday+rogers death theory. I also think they spent around that much time in EB.
-
RE: Ultimate Time-Line of the Grandline (Updated Mar, 2012)
But you're going to tell me with a straight face that those 'few' or 'several' days amount to more than 4 months alone?
Well what would you call ten days? What about 11 day? I am pretty sure those fall under several just as well as 5 does.
Also I was referring to the start of the journey not GL. Again, I see this as nothing more than pacing. Whether it becomes important in the plot has yet to be seen. And therefore, since we do not know, I am speculating–like you are doing--that it has been close to 6 months since Luffy set off.

RE: Ultimate Time-Line of the Grandline (Updated Mar, 2012)
Note the way Oda uses time, it's always used stylistically. Take the bomb incident, he used time to give a sense of urgency. After every big fight he gives us a "after 2-3" days, which serves as pacing to explain: how tough the fight was, time to rest/goodbyes, and closure for the event. If Oda really did have a grand plan with time then he would have been more specific with travel times; but instead he used "several days later" or just a sunset backdrop. This is also a form of pacing. What he is telling the reader is "this adventure is done, now lets skip to the next one"
Which is why trying to make an actual reference frame leads to confusion on the reader's part. It's called suspension of disbelief:
"It refers to the willingness of a person to accept as true the premises of a work of fiction, even if they are fantastic or impossible. It also refers to the willingness of the audience to overlook the limitations of a medium, so that these do not interfere with the acceptance of those premises. According to the theory, suspension of disbelief is a quid pro quo: the audience tacitly agrees to provisionally suspend their judgment in exchange for the promise of entertainment."
If you add up the facts then it obviously does not make sense. I mean look at Rocket Man which took around 5 hours to arrive. Yet Merry was able to make it there on the same day. Guess what, trains–especially runaway trains--go fast, at least 20 times faster than a boat. Notice how Oda used time frames only while the SH were on their way to Enies. And not when they were coming back.
It should be pretty obvious to anyone that these timeframes are literary tools not actual measurements.
You suspend your disbelief for a floating sea train, but not for the passage of time? How does that make sense?
-
RE: Ultimate Time-Line of the Grandline (Updated Mar, 2012)
@Kma:
Is it really that hard to believe that its been around 2 months?
Someone once said that the trip time is somewhat like the novel, Around the World in 80 days. Although I dont think there is any relevance, it shows that 2 months is plenty of time.This is the tale of the man who will be Pirate King. It will be all that much more impressive to transverse the Grandline in such a short time, especially when compared to other pirates.
Sides that he did it with a steamboat and train and didnt stop. But thats not the point. The only real argument is whether Oda does something with it or not. If he does, then the references have a plot meaning. If he does not then they are there for pacing, thats all.

RE: Ultimate Time-Line of the Grandline (Updated Mar, 2012)
When you live and work and fight together on a ship, it is actually a lot more time to bond than you'd think.
I'm not checking the timeline on the first page btw, but I think you're exaggerating the shortness of it too. There was at least one unmeasurable jump there. Plus she's known them since Whiskey Peak.
Ah yea, I missed the 7 days on Long Island. I sill find 3 weeks to be a bit short.
And Greg, you missed the point I was trying to make. I'm not in denial or anything like that, I'm just saying that nothing is set in stone. The feeling I get is close to 6 month. I think people greatly underestimate the sailing time, which for me, as a reader, needs to be there as a filler. A generous amount of sailing time helps reinforce their bond, helps Nami draw her map, lets Ussop make his gadgets and so on. What the timeline does show is that there is a minimum amount of time elapsed. Not the absolute time.
-
RE: Ultimate Time-Line of the Grandline (Updated Mar, 2012)
You can refuse to accept it. Which would also make you wrong. But so long as you're cool with that.
But we've seen time limits and hours mentioned before. And they're all dealt with in time according to our own, especially instances like the time bomb. The burden of proof isn't on anyone to prove that the time in the OP world isn't any different from our own, it's to prove that it is.
Oda isn't giving us time and figures to play some coy obscure game.
Refuting the facts is just selfish. Period.
So you are saying that Oda intends all those time limits to play a greater role in the plot? That they are more than a stylistic tool?
The reason I think play a part is that for an author to be credible, even a great author, he must still abide to a somewhat familiar "temporal human interaction frame" (made that up).
For example, Robin only knew the SH for no more than a week before the water seven incident. Unless your name is Luffy, I doupt it is believable for anyone to such a strong bond so fast. If anything, I think the scenes where the ship leaves off in the sunset represent a timeframe for the reader to accept things like that and for the Anime to add fillers without hurting the plot. Point being if we assume that a week went by at most in-between leaving Alabasta and long island. Then the time difference between the two bounty postings is a bit more than 2 weeks at most and less than a week minimum. That, for me, seems a bit over the top.
As you said, he could be doing this intentionally to make their adventure shorter. But right now I don't see it.

RE: Ultimate Time-Line of the Grandline (Updated Mar, 2012)
Do you seriously want to make those comparisons to a shonen manga? With statistics like average speed of a Caravel, and earth-like sea currents/sailing conditions, you could pretty much call Oda a liar and an idiot.
Remember when people thought Gear2 was "vulcanization" - a process involving complex scientific knowledge - and it turned out to be a drop-dead simple (albeit nonsensical) idea? How about comparing One Piece geography with Earth geography? We saw in the last chapters that the sea bed beside the Redline is over 5km below the surface, and the Redline itself is practically a vertical assent for another few km at least. Is that physically possible on Earth? The point I am making in this post is that One Piece DOES NOT = Earth, not only in the geographical sense, but in ALL senses. Case in point: look at the "Melting rubber to heal" thread that just came up. Hey! Did anyone ever think that Luffy could just burn himself and the rubber would melt back into place?!?!? Wow that could be a totally magical way of recovering from gashes and cuts!!! My reply: Jeewiz, couldn't Luffy just eat meat and heal even better?
One Piece is a shonen (young men/boys) manga, as in, "for all ages". Statistical facts have NO PLACE in shonen manga speculation. It it did, Luffy should have been melted by Eneru's lightning since even non-conductive things would get vaporized by a single bolt of lightning. I don't see any sense in using Earthly scientific data to analyze the OP world. The only physical similarities between the OP world and Earth is the shape of the planet and gravity.
my point exactly :-) There is no point comparing "one piece" days to real days.
Also i'm not calling Oda a liar or an idiot, my point is that he uses time as a pacing device not a measuring device.
-
RE: Ultimate Time-Line of the Grandline (Updated Mar, 2012)
well thats pretty interesting. But I dont think anyone should take any of these time figures to heart. Oda is using time as a pacing device not as an actual measure of anything.
Point being, the one piece world != earth
Lets say they traveled nonstop all 54 days were by ship. The average speed of a caravel is around 4 knots which equates to 1.8 km/h, with that lets do some simple math:
1.852((km/h)/knot)*4(knots)*24(hours/day)*54(days) == 9600 km
Since they are halfway that would make the one piece world 20,000km around the waist. In reality they sailed for a much smaller amount of time, which means he one piece world is tiny. But for the sake of argument lets say it is 20,000Earth is 40,000 km, so at most we know that the one piece world is half of what earth is. And lets also assume that is is half as massive.
Since Earth != the one-piece world all bets are off.
In this one-piece world a day could very well take an earth week. If we assume that the one piece world is made up of the same materials as earth, then we know for sure that the Rotational period will be different, and with that goes all possible temporal analysis.
To really judge how much time has gone by is impossible, so go with your gut because that is what Oda's pacing accomplishes.

Yea they use a lot of archaisms that are not used in France anymore. XD
I don`t know about the swiss-french, never heard it, but as far as the numbers are concerned, they say:
soixante-dix = 70
quatre-vingt = 80
quatre-vingt-dix = 90Never heard of any other way to say those, is there any ?
Guess not eh, well both the swiss and belgians use:
septante = 70
huitante = 80
nonante = 90 -

RE: French Help
@dirt:
I understand that far, but I guess what was confusing me is that she changed it from mon to ma just suddenly and the word itself (which apparently doesn't exist) didn't change, and I didn't know why.
I also understand that some words can't change gender. Like la personne is always going to be feminine no matter who you're talking about or le professeur will always be masculine.
Hmm … are there words that can change gender but don't change in spelling? Might help a little if I know whether it's just a no or if it's rare.
I'm pretty sure there are no words like that as French tends to be grammatically strict. Atleast I can't think of any right now haha.
One of the hardest parts of learning French is the "word genders" since there are no real rules that define if a certain word should be male of female.
Also i'd say "salope" is closer to bitch and "pute" is closer to whore.

RE: Internet help for an internet n00b. PLEASE!
Umm… I'm still lost.
There are 3 ways you can connect to the internet:
- Cable/DSL line + modem, you can hook up a wireless router from that
- if people around your neighborhood have wireless and it is open, you can leech off of it, but you cant attach anything that will make the signal stronger for you
- you can get internet straight from a satellite connection, but its expensive as hell
Now if you meet any of those requirements you can get wireless. If your dad has a connection and has a wireless card, you can share that connection to your laptop's wireless card.
I am going to assume that you have dsl/cable and that your dad connects to the internet by a ethernet cord that is connected to that modem. If you want wireless you need to get a router, hook the router to the modem and then hook an ethernet cord to your dad's computer. Then you should be able to receive a connection on your computer.
-
RE: Internet help for an internet n00b. PLEASE!
Do you just want wireless internet? If so then all you need to get is a wireless router which cost like 20$ and then you hook it up to your cable/dsl.
I'm a bit confused about the last part. You want to make your connection open to the public? I don't recommend doing this since wireless is inherently less secure than anything else. And you dont want to have a bunch of leechers clogging up your bandwidth.
Now if you are talking about game systems like your wii or whatever. And you have a wireless connection already but it just does not extend far enough. You can buy antennas that can boost your coverage area. Those should be pretty cheap nowadays.

RE: External Hard Drive 'Full' even though not 'Full' -_-
Here is the step-by-step from microsoft:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/setup/tips/advanced/ntfs.mspx -
RE: External Hard Drive 'Full' even though not 'Full' -_-
I think it has to do with individual file size. A limitation of the connection perhaps? I can add a 10Gig folder but not a 4Gig individual file. It uses a USB 2 connection so maybe that's a limiting factor. I've had no problem adding other files. Oh well, guess it's just a limitation of the hardware…
Nah that sounds fishy. You should reformat it and try again, also what kind of computer do you have? If you have a mac you should reformat it to "Mac Extended". If you have a pc try either fat32 or NTSF. There is no reason that a new HD should be unable to transfer small sizes esp if its usb 2.0
If that still does not solve anything you should get it replaced.

I'm not quite sure what you mean by that. Do you want the java program to just edit the files? Or do you want it to directly interact with the other programs? Can you elaborate on what you want to do?
The latter is hard to do, you can use the robot class to emulate keystrokes:
import java.awt.*; import java.awt.event.*; import java.awt.AWTException; public class Robohobo { public static void main(String[] args)throws AWTException{ try { Robot hobo = new Robot(); Runtime.getRuntime().exec("notepad"); //opens notepad hobo.delay(3000); //3 second delay hobo.keyPress(KeyEvent.VK_A); //write stuff hobo.keyPress(KeyEvent.VK_B); hobo.keyPress(KeyEvent.VK_C); } catch (AWTException err) { System.out.println("Dammmmm youuuuuu"); } } }

RE: Meeting of Kings
@Lobster:
Remember, at the end of Drum, where Dalton has that flashback? The one where they go to the meeting of Kings, and Wapol tries to eat Vivi? Well, there were a lot of other people we saw at the Table of Kings. Do we have any conformation/speculation on who they were? Not all of them were kings either. There were dark powerful looking characters standing in the corners, and infront of the table as well.
I believe that Dr. VegaPunk was shown at that meeting. And more importantly, what if Oda makes them have a second meeting? How often do they occur, anyway? What was their purpose?
He tried to eat vivi? Wut? And what would vegapunk be doing there? He's not a king. I'm pretty sure the meeting only comes when there is some sort of huge treat. Or maybe it's like UN meetings, who knows?

RE: I just thought of the PERFECT ending for the series.
@Dr.:
There should be a grand battle at Raftel between the Strawhat Pirates and the Phoenix Pirates (the Ice Hunter arc, for you fools who avoid anything that isn't your precious manga). It lasts for two weeks. The Straw Hats emerge victorious, but Luffy decides to let Phoenix Puzzle have One Piece in honor of his courage; despite being much weaker, Phoenix's crew fought tirelessly. Luffy and the group get back on Thousand Sunny and start their long return trip to East Blue. The series ends with Phoenix opening the treasure chest and shouting, "I am the Pirate King!" to the heavens.
Anyone like this idea as much as I do? It's a nice twist ending and has a deep moral behind it.
I would be very disappointed.

RE: Ugly Side of Japan
Interesting read. So there is good and bad in japan. I'd still like to see for myself before I make any judgments wether the japanese are really cool, or a bunch of pricks. :P I tend to be optamistic though.
actually, this reminds me of when i visited my friend when she was studying in Quebec, Canada. My pardons to any Quebecers on this board, but french speakers from Quebec got something up their ass. They hate English speakers, and treat us as such. What did I, as a person ever do to them. Yet, when I went to visit my friend, the Bus driver snubbed us off and then left our luggage under the buss, way at the back for us to get. My friend says that happens all the time, and she had learned to deal with it. I don't like being treated that way for something I haven't done though. Maybe if I was a jerk, ok, but just because I speak english. bite me.
Needless to say, I've got a bit of bitterness for quebecers for that, where as when I was living way over in Saskatchewan, I was none the wiser and thought they were like everyone else. Some even refuse to call themselves Canadian. they are "Quebequois"
Ironically Quebec is to France like canada is to the U.S.
For all those of you worrying about earthquakes… well don't. I dunno if the rates are higher than over here in Cali, but they tend to be pretty fun barging the odd big one that hits once in a century.
Back in 2003 with the French hate that was going on (I'm French) things could have been ugly, and they sometimes were, especially at the airport where French tourists were being held up or whatnot. Nothing new there. But since most people can't tell you are French (unless you have an horrible accent), there tends to be no "dirty looks" or whatnot. So my sympathies to many of the Arabs living here.
I personally don't like any form of nationalism, and that includes negative nationalism (aka hating your country for whatever unjustified reason is just as bad as loving it for an unjustified reason). I just wish people would get over themselves and stop being pricks, because thats all they are.

The chance for lightning is zero. Was it Akainu in that scene? I dont really remember. And why would he go crazy from seeing sanji? I'm pretty sure that was just a running gag with Sanji and the wanted posters.

ok, do you mind me asking then, how do you know what are the wierd programs. It's all foregn to me. I would like to clean up my start up myself, since it takes soo long for my pc to start up. :)
For starters, go into the "run" and type in msconfig. Once you are there you can disable all the start up programs in the start up tab. Unless you recognize one that you do want, like spybot or whatever. Then go into the services tab and click on the option to hide all microsoft services. Once you do that take out everything that has a weird name or you dont remember installing. Keep your antivirus stuff, and take out the rest.
This should get rid of alot of the crap companies put in when you install stuff.
you can always reformat and reinstall.

RE: Moving Into Dorm
Oh so your living in something similar to courtyard campus apartment dorms…trust me it's fun! I live in a dorm now and what you need to do is just have fun! Get involved in campus activities! Don't sit in your room all day if you want to get classed as a dork! Make friends and don't forget to study all the time! Have fun dude!
I can't stress this enough. Make sure you don't become a cave dweller. Get to know people early one. Make friends with someone who has a car. Meal plans are nice, but that depends on the hours they operate.
Stock up on underwear and socks. Don't forget to bring scissors. Make sure to have clearly defined rules for your room. Don't get into the habit of skipping classes! The pace of a quarter system is much faster than a semester system, you will be swimming in midterms before you know it.
Study, Study, Study and make sure to go outside, and meet new people. You can kill two birds with one stone by holding study sessions with others in your class or dorm, they will love you for it and everyone will have a blast and learn to boot.
Good luck with your first year

RE: Getting a Mac…
man you guys are missing out… The best mac manga viewer is FFview, you can get it at macupdate.com or just google it. Trust me you wont be disappointed especially if you are coming from the fax viewer.
Preview just doesnt cut it either.

RE: Little creeped
yea you probably are. From you description it seems that casino thing is some kind of backdoor program, that once you run it it gives access to you computer.
If you see a weird process that you cant stop, just go to msconfig and look at your startup services, of the sleazy stuff tends to show up there.
Make sure to also clean out anything related to it in regedit. But since none of your virus apps picked anything up chances you are fine, but its better to be safe than sorry.
