The Funimation DVD Thread: Where we talk about our sexual fantasies with One Piece characters.
mmmm… Pandaman...
First, let me just say I'm not singling you out here. I've just been noticing a trend of "X can do Y" in this thread for a while. Sorry if I've come across as going after you specifically.
But what I'm getting at here is that regardless of "They could do this job", there has been neither an expressed nor implied need for those positions. Yes, Leo/Manshelly/(insert dwarf here) could be a botanist on the crew, but there's no need for one. There's no indication of needing a botanist so chances are we probably won't get one. Same goes for the other roles. I mean yes, if they joined the crew they could do that, but all that gets thrown out the window when you realize there are no indicators that'll have that position. It's a moot point. And I don't see Oda changing a pattern now, 16 years into One Piece's run.
Swordsman, archaeologist, sniper. Some were obvious some weren't, next one (if there is one) might not be.
Ok, so, nice to know you're blatantly ignoring the whole Robin thing. Also, remember that Luffy made up his mind up about Zoro joining before even meeting the guy. So that leaves Usopp. That's it.
If you REALLY feel like stretching, you could make the case that the crew expressed the desire for a new ship before meeting Usopp, and they got him and Merry together. But, again, it's a bit of a stretch.
Welp, there goes the joke, flying over my head.
@mosby:
Nobody said they need an archeologist when Robin joined. I think its another similarity with Alabasta Arc and Dressrosa Arc. Making up jobs is pretty good. At least less people will be unemployed. ^^
Which is why I added that you could make the argument Robin doesn't count. Robin purpose in the crew is not a practical one in the context of the story. Rather, Robin's purpose is to act as a catalyst for Oda to incorporate the back story of the world. It's world-building. Robin doesn't get one of those "We need this position filled things" because it was Oda's reaction to "Oh shit, I have no way of incorporating the Void Century, Ancient Kingdom, etc. into the story, do I?". For the practical jobs (Shipwright, Navigator, Cook, Doctor, even Musician), we've had these indicators before we even lay eyes on the characters that would end up filling those positions.
I'm pretty sure people are just making up jobs to be "filled" for the crew. Nobody's joining this arc, and nobody will be until it's explicitly stated "HEY, WE NEED X". It's happened for almost every crewmember up to this point, with the exception of Zoro, Usopp, and Robin (but you can make the case for it not applying for Robin, since she's a part of the crew to serve as a way for Oda to incorperate the Void Century, Ancient Kingdom, etc.). We'll know when a new crewmember is coming up. We haven't seen anyone say "We need a tailor/lookout/ANOTHER SWORDSMAN".
@O:
Viola, may be since there is only one girl in the crew, a second one would make a nice friend for Nami and a wife for Sanji ;)
Robin says hi.
Is this one going to cover Baroque Works and Skypiea?
The last box-set covered through the end of Baroque Works. ANN is saying it covers the Skypeia and Water 7 Arcs, but I couldn't find any confirmation from Viz themselves.
Someone last page said they were written the same way
Op, whoops. Probably should have seen that. Well, never mind then.
What might be worth noting is that, in the original Japanese version, the word for "Paradise" Luffy uses in reference to what Zeff said is a different word than the one used to reference the first half of the Grand Line. I believe the word Luffy uses is the Japanese equivalent to "Paradise", as it's written in kanji(?) and has it's own pronunciation separate from the English term. The other "Paradise" (The Grand Line one), is written in katakana(?) and phonetically mirrors the actual English word, "Paradise".
However, I don't exactly read/speak the language (all the above is based on some research I just did), so I could very well be mistaken.
@Light:
I know about those, but why would they do those tasks anymore since they command their own divisions now? Wouldn't it be demeaning for them to do stuff like cooking, steering or fixing ships?
Yeah, that makes sense. But I also don't get why Oda would make it so half of each crew have corresponding positions and then have the rest just not. It seems like more than a coincidence, especially since the Blackbeards are supposed to be the Nega-Strawhats.
None of them seem to be an Archeologist, a musician, a shipwright or cook. Actually, where does it say that Lafitte is their navigator?
Had to dig to find it. Says it on the little info page at the beginning of Volume 46.
You could make the argument that, while yes, Robin is an archeologist, that her practical purpose on the crew is reconnaissance-based. But you're right, and again, we haven't seen some of the crew mates (specifically the Level 6 guys) do much aside from show up with Blackbeard at the war. So yeah, there's nothing really pointing towards their roles, if they have any, but since we don't know much about them I don't think it's entirely fair for us to say what they are or aren't yet.
@Light:
While Blackbeards are supposed be Straw Hats "evil counterpart", are they sure to have exactly same positions too? We already know that they all have their own divisions so they probably leave more menial tasks to lower-ranking members now.
Well, we know that the Blackbeard Pirates have a Doctor, Swordsman, Navigator, Sniper, and, of course, a Captain (Doc Q, Shiliew, Lafitte, Van Augur, and Blackbeard himself, respectively), just as the Strawhats do. That's 5 of the 11 total crew members for each crew, about half. It seems like a pretty safe bet that the other core members of the Blackbeard crew have the same positions the Strawhats do.
But, then again, we also don't know the roles of the Level 6 guys (sans Shiliew), if they even have them, so IDK, maybe they'll disprove that entirely?
Of couse, page 420 would involve one of the more flawed, out-there theories.
Surprissed no one has mentioned Yu-Yu Hakusho yet.
!
(I could only find the dubbed version in decent quality) I mean, YYH gets hella dark at points. You go from this cheery opening song to stuff like Sensui trying to bring about the apocalypse. I mean, the opening itself doesn't even fit the song, being all J-popy while demons are mutilated by the protagonists.
Also, Ghost Stories' ending
!
Let's have a show marketed towards kids end with a song called "Sexy Sexy". FUND IT. PRINT IT. IT'S GOLDEN.
i borrowed a viz's volume 1 from the library and thought if there is no one scaned it on the internet i thought i could scan it to let ppl have a look on the viz translation. thats why i asked the question here.
Viz offers the first chapter absolutely free on their site, so if anyone wants to "have a look at the Viz translation", they can do that. Don't scan the official release. All it does is undermine Viz and hurts them as a company, which kinda sucks since, you know, they release the series over her. No Viz = No more OP releases over here.
Also, like DemonX said, really rude to come in here and ask for scans of Viz's translation when Stephen, the guy who translates for them, posts here regularly. Not cool.
So, in summation, don't. Just don't.
For all we know, maybe Toei had Mike use Haki kind of like how they decided on sniper king over sogeking.
I can't remember where I heard it, but I recall someone (maybe an interview with Mike?) saying that Toei has a master-list of terms and how they're to be translated, if at all. I'm not 100% sure on that though, maybe someone can verify?
Also, I don't know about you guys, but Armament Ambition and Observation Ambition sound pretty stupid.
Has there been any official word on that? I can't find anything on Google or funimation.com.
There hasn't, I think DP's confused with something else.
Actually, I think there has. I believe it was in the Four Year Anniversary episode of the Podcast, during the interview with One Piece's brand manager over at Funimation (Not 100% sure. It's been months since I listened to that episode). Granted it's not 'official' confirmation, 'cause Funi has yet to come out and say the collections are continuing in 2014, but given that Josh is the brand manager I'd take his word for it.
Ok, so I haven't really been following the thread, but has anyone brought up the possibility that Doflamingo may break Sanji's leg, or at the very least make the injury he got during his fight with Vergo worse? 'Cause I've been waiting for this whole broken leg thing to be addressed since that chapter got released.
Here's the injury I'm talking about for those who don't remember.
!
He respects dreams, went to skypeia, has a dream/goal to join doffie
Might I remind you that his dream is to join someone in DIRECT OPPOSITION to Luffy? That when Doflamingo gets taken down, in either this arc or a future one, his goal becomes a moot point?
has a great fighting style
So did Paulie, and guess who didn't join. And that's not even getting into the fact that is fighting style is similar to Luffy's.
he'll have his flashback to what happened in skypeia
1. It was implied that he did something bad to the people on Skypiea, which kinda conflicts with the whole "Don't mess with my friends" thing Luffy has going.
2. I would highly doubt what happened on Skypiea was "tragic". Simply having a flashback does not make a character Strawhat potential. Having a "tragic" flashback does.
even an idiot can see him siding with luffy in the end
Well, yeah. He's going to be on Luffy's side in the end. But will he join the crew? No.
plus hes more likely than rebecca and bart.
Anything's bigger than 0%.
Besides, what would Bellamy's role be on the ship? And why do the Strawhats NEED Bellamy to progress?
There's a lot of things pointing to him, the fact that he's a dreamer now, his eventual flashback this arc, the friendship with him and luffy if you pay attention to the dialog. His conflicting feelings with the assasination and his eventual turn from doffie, after this he'll have no where to go and has lost his crew so luffy may take him in.There are other things but im on my kindle so i cant type it all.
Where are you getting this idea that Bellamy now has a dream? There has not been any indication of him being a dreamer, unless you count wanting to be an officer of the Donquixote Family, which directly conflicts with Luffy and his goals. His conflicting feelings about the assassination do nothing to prove that he's going to join the crew. All it does is prove he's on good terms with Luffy, which again does not mean he's going to join. Also, there's nothing pointing to him getting a flashback. At all.
That's right, Bellamy will.
Why? What remotely even points to Bellamy joining, other than the fact that he and Luffy have made nice with each other?
Has anyone heard about when/if collection 9 will be released? I bought the first 8 collections, but since #9 hasn't come out, I bought all 5 voyages of Season 4, and now I'm going to be buying the season 5 DVD's soon as well.
I think the Podcast asked this a while back in an interview with the brand manager of One Piece. I believe he said Collection 9 could come out at the beginning of next year at the earliest. I'll see if I can't find what episode of the podcast it was in.
Eh, it's ok. The animation's ok, but everyone looks so freakin' shiny at some points. They look like they're made of plastic. But the inclusion of Brave New World made me giddy with joy and I liked(?) that they included Apis in the flashbacks to the Calm Belt during the Merry's funeral. And I liked the inclusion of Sunny's Klabautermann. Hadn't really thought about that until now.
Also, I like how everyone is in their Film Z outfits EXCEPT FOR FRANKY.
ALSO ALSO, MEMORIES IS PLAYING DURING THE CREDITS YES GOOD THINGS
I could be wrong, but didn't Funi announce season 4 at the One Piece Podcast panel? Or am I remembering it wrong?
Season 4 wasn't announced at any panel or place, but was instead announced on the Podcast itself. Which is part of the reason I'm not worrying yet. Funimation could just repeat what they did with Season 4.
Also, the Podcast announced they have a new interview with Mike McFarland for an upcoming episode of the podcast, so the interview could potentially be a part of a Season 6 announcement.
Awesome, I was really hoping that Funimation would save Bebop. Guess I'm gonna be buying the series again. Little disappointed we didn't get a One Piece announcement, but I'm not really worrying about it yet. I'll wait for Voyages 4 or 5 to start worrying.
I don't like these trailers. They tell me what this set will be about. I would much prefer trailers that leave me confused and not knowing what the basic premise of this set it.
Seriously, if they didn't include all of these 'spoilers' Funi wouldn't have anything to put in the trailer. The point of a trailer is "Ok, here's why you should be excited for this". Stuff like the who fights who and Monster Chopper and a basic premise of Robin's past get people interested and they've been shown in such a way that doesn't give too much away. People who haven't seen the series probably won't be able to make heads or tails of stuff like Monster Chopper.
Would FUNimation have to buy the rights to air a new opening? I thought they already had the rights to OP so any opening that comes is included in the fees they already paid.
Funi has the rights to simulcast the series. However, the rights to the opening songs lie with the music artist and their record label, meaning Funi has to get the individual rights to the song in order to use the opening. Funi obviously ran into some issues licensing the song, so while they're allowed to continue simulcasting the series, they're unable to use the new opening.
Pretty slow episode. A lot of it was spent just looking at Shinokuni and mountains. Animation wasn't all that great, noticed Zoro, Kinemon, and Ceasar looked off-model in a few shots. Definitely not one of the better episodes this arc.
@Croco~Boy:
Out of all the Strawhats, who is the least improved one after the TS?
Isn't Nami the weakest one?
But Nami's goal wasn't to grow stronger. Nami's goal was to learn about the weather are be prepared to navigate the crazy weather of the New World. Nami's improved a great deal over the timeskip, but that doesn't necessarily mean being able to fight better. Here job in the crew, first and foremost, is being the navigator.
Also, has Sanji been replaced by Nami as the Strawhat people want to get the Mera-Mera? Because neither of them will get it.
@LUFFY#1:
You would think after still having a season of One Piece to come out+Strong World coming in November that you guys would be able to relax without hearing news.
Agreed. But I can understand why people are concerned. We're finally getting the anime released at a consistent rate over here. I think the last thing anyone wants to happen is for the anime to fall into another year and a half hiatus. I think people just want to know that we're going to continue getting consistent releases. But I'll be shocked if Otakon comes and goes without the announcement of Season 6.
Lol people still using "blue walk" as an excuse huh? Ok right here Franky used "sky walk"
! https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-zaE-UPyjLsA/T_nNvA3mHhI/AAAAAAAAYHs/EkZhazJPMmU/w800-h800/skywalk.png and that's the last we ever seen him use it, so why can't Oda do the same with blue walk if he wants?
Because Franky's "Sky Walk" was a gag and wasn't meant to be taken seriously? Blue Walk is a technique Sanji developed over the timeskip. Oda wouldn't give Sanji Blue Walk if he intended for him to use it TWICE and then have him immediately give it up. We all know that Oda plans out big story decisions like this far in advance. Plus, giving Sanji the Mera-Mera completely undermines the two-years he spent training. Regardless of how long it's been since it happened, we're only on the third arc since the timeskip happened. We haven't even seen the full extent of what the entire crew can do, let alone Sanji.
Trust me, I WISH there was a way for Sanji to get the fruit that made sense. Sanji's may favorite Strawhat and I hate how he's become a complete joke ever since Enies Lobby. I think the Mera-Mera would fit his fighting style quite well. But the fact of the matter is is that it doesn't make sense for Sanji to get the fruit. Or any of the Strawhats for that matter.
Someone will get mad at Doflamingo for lying to Law, resulting in this scene.
I talked to Brian Ige from VIZ there and he said they'd be airing a couple of new episodes each week. Didn't get the exact amount, maybe I'll try asking him later.
To be fair, a couple, by definition, means 2.
And is there any news on this Brook contest? Is it being run by the Podcast or by Funi themselves? When it starts? Or are we just aware the contest will happen at some point?
His real name is Fernão de Magalhães. Never quite understood why his name transformed into "Ferdinand Magellan". His name shouldn't be "translated", I believe.
Interesting. The English probably translated it (possibly unintentionally) into Ferdinand Magellan because it would be easier for them to pronounce and understand. Or maybe it was just lost in translation. But you're right, names shouldn't be translated. Your name is your name no matter where you go.
@Monkey:
Norland's era looked way more like the Age of Exploration.
The One Piece world is super globalized lol. With clothing brands and shit.
I guess you're right. Though I was speaking from more of a technological standpoint as opposed to an economic one. At the very least, the ships in One Piece are comparable to those used in the Age of Exploration.
How much bigger or smaller is OnePiece World compared to Earth?
I believe the OP world is supposed to be about the same size as ours. If I remember correctly, One Piece is supposed to be set in a time-frame comparable to that of the Age of Exploration. It took Magellan (As in Ferdinand Magellan, not the warden of Impel Down) about 3 years to circumnavigate the Earth. If you take out the time spent going around the Americas and Africa to get back to Spain, it probably would have take him a few months, about the time Luffy and co. took to get from Reverse Mountain to the Red Line.
why were there diffeent versions of t Adventure World.
If I remember correctly, Adventure World was used to showcase fanart sent in by viewers (usually kids), so Adventure World is different every episode it's in in order to show new fanart.
According to the Podcast's Facebook page, Strong World will be released November 19th. About the time frame I was expecting. Still, having a definitive date is nice.
EDIT: Confirmed by Funimation via Twitter
Will characters in One Piece ever stay dead? I was just watching the part in Enies Lobby where Franky's nakama, Galley-La, the giants, and Yokuzuna were suspected to be dead. It was really eye-jerking, then we have to have our ray of sunshine by realizing that they were actually alive. If they had died, it could have lead to some really good character development for Franky in the future instead of giving an unwarranted happy ending.
Let me introduce you to Ace and Whitebeard.
Dude this a manga written by someone not a reality, you get that? Logic don't work here.
Oh yes, it does. Logic most certainly does exist within the world of One Piece evident by the fact that characters make rational decisions based on information presented. Oda has changed the rules the world abides by, not taken away the ability to think rationally.
How well does One Piece sell. I know it sells pretty well, and don't compare it to Naruto and Bleach. I just want to know if it sells moderetly well.
New volumes almost always crack the Top 10 on the New York Times Bestselling, usually within the top 3 (the last two volumes, 66 and 67 have made the #1 spot in their second and third weeks respectively). It stays in the Top 10 for about a month, give or take a week, then disappears from the list until the new volume comes out.
So needless to say, it sells pretty darn well. Like you said, it doesn't sell like Naruto or Bleach, but it's pretty close.
Since the topic has severly derailed.
Scale of 1-10, 1 = No Chance 10= Damn Skippy. How likely do you think it is we're getting a new crewmember this Arc?
11 Barty 4 nakuma
But really though, I don't see there being a new crewmate by the end of the arc. There hasn't really been any indication of the crew really NEEDING anyone to join at the moment. Almost everytime someone joined the crew, there was an event preceding it that indicated that that certain role need to be filled (Merry falling into disrepair per-Water 7 and the crew mentioning they need a shipwright, Nami falling ill during Drum Island and the crew realizing they needed a doctor, Luffy constantly bringing up how he wanted a musician), the exceptions being Robin and Usopp.
The first half of the episode was SLOOOOOOOOOOOOOW, but the second half was really good I think. Animation got better in the second half too. This is the first time in recent memory the art has consistently been good. Quality episode. Overall, I think Punk Hazard is being handled in the anime WAY better than Fishman Island was.
Ok, so with the last chapter it's basically been revealed that Doflamingo is a nobel, right? Doflamingo's a pirate. And who's everybody's favorite nobel who wanted to be a pirate?
!
Doflamingo is Sabo :ninja:
All of you hush about this insignificant subject. Hiriluk spent his entire life researching that pink powder crap. He didn't have time to be a pirate or a thief. Now hush.
False.
!
Apologies for bad scan quality
Hiriluk was a thief with an incurable disease. After the sight of those cherry blossoms, he was miraculously cured. He then spent the next 30 years, not his whole life, developing a way of making those cherry blossoms bloom in the harsh winter of Drum Island.
Out of curiosity, how many of you believe Blackbeard actually planned to start a war with Whitebeard once he became a Warlord?
He probably didn't. Keep in mind he originally planned to turn in Luffy to become a Warlord. I doubt the capture and potential execution of Luffy would have led Whitebeard to start a war with the World Government.
I doubt it'll be Colleen doing it. I remember Mike McFarland saying a while back (might have been an episode commentary or an interview with the Podcast, I forget which) that they're trying to make the cast for One Piece as diverse as possible. That being said, Colleen probably won't have another voice role in One Piece since not only has she been in the series, but she plays the lead role.
This is the third week in a row my channel info box is describing a Jaya episode. It's really bizarre…
Mine's been showing the 4Kids actors instead of the Funimation ones under the actors. Gettin' tired of seeing David Moo on there.
Really looking forward to this episode. I remember it being a good one the last time I saw it.
