God fucking damn their explicit announcement about no voice chat at all puts a gigantic damper on things. It's like a turd sitting on top of a delicious cake.
Game looks like so much fun though T_T

RE: Super Smash Bros
The recent Smash literally just came out … and already we're talking of characters for the next smash?
Smash anticipation is more fun than the actual games these days lol
The main notable that I think is missing injustly is Dixie Kong. Given how DK is such a large franchise it makes no sense for the DK series to only have DK and Diddy.
Yeaahhh this. Dixie Kong was in Tropical Freeze too recently so I really don't see why she wouldn't be included.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
Fixed for ya.
I fucking hated that the rewards for winning were random. Some dude would get the invincibility star and another would get the giant mushroom. Giant mushroom actually being a disadvantage because the stage was so small. Sometimes you wouldn't even get anything -______-
Still I like the stageSo I've been playing SSBWU for about two weeks now. Here are a few things I've learned:
-Olimar sucks
-Diddy sucks
-Megaman sucks
-Kirby is still awesome
-The Warioware stage is the worst stage ever
-Hey, here's a thought! Why don't we base these challenges more on our fighting skills and less on whether or not we make one dumb mistake and plunge into the abyss of a stage that has a grossly inadequate amount of safety
-Having multiples of the same trophy still makes no sense
-Customizing the characters makes many challenges much MUCH easier.
-Despite it's flaws, SSB is still a blast to playYou're crazy man. Also I didn't see the Warioware stage in SmashU? I thought it was 3DS only? I remember being super disappointed they left it for the shitty handheld version

RE: The Nintendo Thread
I hope the put Punch Out!!, Game and Wario or Hyrule Warriors as platinum rewards
I've bought pretty much every other Nintendo Wii U game -_-Oh and Wii Party U is that any good at all?
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
Also what the actual fuck???? Mario Party 10 requires wiimotes to play?

RE: General Sonic the Hedgehog Thread (Now With Movie 3 & Knuckles)
The other bosses were probably the worst I've ever seen in a video game, no hyperbole. Fucking cringeworthy
-
RE: General Zelda thread
I'm playing the SNES remake of first The Legend of Zelda, the 'third quest' if you will. Playing a patched version of the ROM so there's no timer.
I haven't played the NES version so it's my first time. I feel like I'd be totally confused if this was my first Zelda game because the game doesn't tell you very much, like how you can push blocks or use bombs to blow up walls. Maybe all that stuff would have been in the paper manual.Anyway I am having a lot of fun playing a Zelda game with a lot less direction. It's actually more linear than I thought it'd be.
-
RE: The Remastered Thread
This is kind of dumb, why wouldn't they release the whole God of War saga on PS4 instead?
-
RE: Toriko II: Ichiryuu's Slimy Insides!!
I for one like both Komatsu and the comic's homosexual undertones. Fuck Rin!

RE: General Sonic the Hedgehog Thread (Now With Movie 3 & Knuckles)
I think the Galaxy planetoid levels thing is the only good way to translate Sonic's gameplay into 3D. That we've seen at least.
Granted Lost World was pretty shitty but Sonic Team should work on perfecting that stuff in a sequel without unnecessary 2d levels or gimmick levels. -
RE: General Sonic the Hedgehog Thread (Now With Movie 3 & Knuckles)
"Sonic going fast" isn't the problem or why audiences are bored by the idea. "Sonic constantly going fast down a hallway with bad controls and basically autoplaying" is what audiences are bored by.
Well, people liked Generations so maybe not :P

RE: Retro Game Party: HD+ Remaster - March 2015 - Super Metroid
I still can't think of PS2 era games as retro, just can't.
But regardless I totally second Beyond Good and Evil. There's a PC version and a PSN HD version so it's very accessible.

RE: The Nintendo Thread
@Purple:
Recently I've been emulating games on the Wii U using Nintendont. Doesn't need any specific modifications to the system other than homebrew of course
Yeah according to everything I've read Nintendont seems to be the better one, much better compatibility list.
But I'll be using my Wii. Apparently the Wii U version has some absurd anti-piracy stuff hoola hoops you gotta jump through, that right? -
RE: The Nintendo Thread
Anyone have experience installing DIOS MIOS on their Wii and know of a good tutorial?
I've got an urge to play F-zero GX

RE: SQUARE ENIX - Single Player RPGs are dead?
But..Why are you controling a japanease boy band ?
Speak for yourself, I'm looking forward to all the porn
Then again, to be fair, it seems that a number of the giant Japanese game studios have been kinda derping around in the past few years. I.e. Square, Capcom, Sega, Nintendo (not as BAD as the others, but they've gotten kinda weird and they only seem to be getting stranger), Konami (ehh…again not as bad but they've been weird with their franchises other than MGS), ehh...
(At least with Konami and Nintendo, they kinda even themselves out with the good and bad).
I still think Japanese game devs are a lot better than Western ones even now, it's just the higher ups that make dumbass decisions constantly.
Dragon's Dogma, the RPG of the decade, gets decent sales for a new IP and great critical reception among hardcore gaming fans. Ripe to build on. Promptly followed up by an F2P game -_- -
RE: The Nintendo Thread
Well I mean, I like Punch-out's gameplay so I wouldn't want them to mess with it too much. More (new) boxers, maybe some sort of challenge/trial/mission mode (ie knock out Don Flamenco with an uppercut in the 2nd round), and of course all the rematch/title defense stuff that Wii brought to the table.
bringing back more kinds of punches, like in Super Punch-out, would be cool though.
I would like them to take a risk and allow some more freedom of movement around the Boxing Ring. Keep the spirit of the game intact with the silly cartooney boxers, the twitchy puzzle like combat, but expand it so it's a lot more than than just dodging and then punching at the right time.
I would love to see the reception to a game like Punch Out today lol. Lots of political correctness crusaders in games media now.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
@Galaxy:
I was hoping they'd release a downloadable Xenoblade Chronicles for Wii U but this port makes it unlikely yeah?
-
RE: The Nintendo Thread
wow what a cunt
but seriously, I'm hoping for another Punch-out. The wii one was actually pretty fantastic, and with Little Mac's surge in popularity due to Smash Bros, now might be just the right time for another.
Yeah as much as I would love them to make something new I wouldn't mind at all getting a Punch Out or Mario Strikers.
Though, hopefully they'd do something new with Punch Out, not make it a replica of the NES version again -
RE: The Nintendo Thread
Nintendo doesn't actually get behind their new IPs like other companies do. Get a good game made like W101 and all their ads on tv are about New Super Mario Bros
Glad they're making a game for Wii U though :P. Too much potentially good stuff wasted on that uncomfortable circle pad
-
RE: Super Smash Bros
There's gotta be extra content packaged with Mewtwo. It shouldn't take them this long just to make one character. Especially one that they've already made before. At least a stage and some music should come along with it.
This is gonna conflict me so hard -_- I haven't actually played this much after 2 weeks of release, but I'd still want all the characters…
-
RE: #SkeletonGate
I just saw that routine and it was really cringe worthy. It's pretty sad how….IRL this thing has gotten.
-
RE: #SkeletonGate
Sands of Time is great. Warrior Within is awful (why was this game so praised at the time besides improved combat?). Two Thrones is great.
I didn't really like the combat. Maybe I have to go back and replay it on the HD collection. It felt way too complicated and combat took up a much larger part of the game. I'd spen like 20 minutes just hacking away at some opponent, no fun at all.
BUT the platforming was top fucking notch especially with all those secret areas you could go to if you were good enough, and the multiple endings.
But yeah the stupid edgy aesthetic ruined what could have been a great game. I had to mute the game often because of that god awful music
-
RE: #SkeletonGate
I would think it wouldn't hold up too well, if we're just highlighting the platforming and the puzzles and rightfully taking the combat to task.
Nah it's still great. I play it again through the PS3 trilogy collection about a year ago. The combat is the weakest link for sure, but it's still decent fun. I actually had no idea about the wall stab move when I first played it, so I even found something new to exploit. It's also really astonishing how great PS2 era graphics still look when rendered in HD.
That elevator sequence where you have to protect Farah is still annoying as fuck mind you
-
RE: Retro Game Party: HD+ Remaster - March 2015 - Super Metroid
And the things you fault it for are so silly too. The game sends you to the last save point instead of letting you respawn while still having what you already collected. How DARE the game do that? It must be broken.
Seriously? I'm sorry, but that's a stupid problem to have with the game. This is a game where they want to DISCOURAGE you from dying. You know, like other people have said, the problem is fixed by GETTING GOOD.Meh. I'm not finding this game particularly difficult yet. It's just a pain in the ass. I keep going back and saving because I might come across a hard boss and die and lose like 10 minutes of progress, but I haven't actually died more than that one time. There are so many better ways the game can ramp up the difficulty. Stop handing out health so freely for example.
Anyway I like games where I can experiment like trying my hand at defeating a boss with a sliver of health or die trying to get past a ground full of spikes to see what's on the other side. This conservative style of gameplay isn't my thing I guess. To me it seems not so much a test of skill but rather patience. And constant pointless backtracking isn't fun for me.
But I can see the appeal like Hiroy said. It's a bit like perma death runs I suppose, full of tension.
-
RE: Retro Game Party: HD+ Remaster - March 2015 - Super Metroid
That one's probably on the capabilities of the SNES and not one of their many missteps in actual game design.
Why would that be? Upon death they just need to teleport me back to the last place I saved really. I just played ALTTP which didn't have this problem.
-
RE: Retro Game Party: HD+ Remaster - March 2015 - Super Metroid
How is having to save, bad design? ALL lengthy games have a save option. NOT having a save option would be bad design. Computers have save options. If you neglect to save, it's your own damn fault. It can even be considered part of the strategy.
Well if I get like the Charge beam say, and then I die 30 minutes later, I should still have that item. It's not SAVING that's the problem it's losing all your progress when you die like nothing happened since the save point. I can understand that happening if I turn the game off, but I didn't. It basically means you have to go back and save constantly which is a pain in the ass and breaks up the flow (or use save states like I now plan to do :P).
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
Save states? Why you spoiled little…
What you gonna do about it gramps???
-
RE: Retro Game Party: HD+ Remaster - March 2015 - Super Metroid
Yeppers. Gotta save when you can.
That's unfortunate. Bad design really. Now I'm gonna be compelled to use save states every 5 minutes -_-

RE: #SkeletonGate
I think calling Yahtzee (or any other sensationalist attention-seeking reviewer) a critic to begin with is highly questionable. Being professionally satirical, sarcastic, and insulting is NOT legitimate criticism. It's entertainment, pure and simple. His own real opinions might be blended in there somewhere, but as a basis on which to inform oneself about a game and whether you will enjoy it (or even whether it should be considered good), that stuff is next to useless. And honestly, the one thing that irks me about people such as him is that there are folks out there clueless enough to take the reviews seriously, to where they actually have an impact on buying decisions.
Naturally his videos are filled with jokes, but it still seems clear to me that those are his actual thoughts on the game. And then he expands on them in his blog or the extra punctuation column in a more serious manner. And throughout the years he's recommended quite a few games too.
I stopped finding his shit funny too a long tim ago, but I still check em out occasionally to see what he thinks.
-
RE: Retro Game Party: HD+ Remaster - March 2015 - Super Metroid
I'm playing it on the Wii U gamepad lol, the controls are great and it's extraordinarily comfortable.
Anyway I'm loving the music and the general mood of the game. It's definitely a LOT more user friendly than the first NES Metroid.
I don't feel like the combat is great (compared to Megaman X which I'm also playing) but I did just get the charge beam so we'll see. So…does dying erase all your progress since your last save point? I feel like I just lost about an hour of gameplay
-
RE: #SkeletonGate
I think Yahtzee is a pretty decent critic. He has some really strange opinions that I don't see eye to eye with him on. Like his abhorrence of online games, his insistence that games should always have a single player mode, his assertion that a game can never be good without a narrative component. He also seems to suck quite a bit at games…
But he wears his heart on his sleeve, his stuff feels like his genuine opinions, and that's what counts at the end. It's a pretty hard trait to find in such a popular games critic.
--- Update From New Post Merge ---
You know, I never saw any internet game reviewer, vlogger, specialist or whatever those guys are called who makes a top list of the year that has Nintendo games mixed with Sony and Microsoft titles.
I think most of Sony and Microsoft's 2014 big releases have been quite buggy and ill received. Halo and Driveclub being the most notable examples.
How they said that 2014 was the "worst year in gaming" despite having great nintendo games left and right.
I dunno man. I really enjoyed Donkey Kong, Bayonetta, Mario Kart 8 and Pushmo World. Smash Bros was a pretty huge disappointment for me. Anyway there's still not much there with Nintendo or not.
-
RE: Retro Game Party: HD+ Remaster - March 2015 - Super Metroid
Ah, the good ol' days where it really did pay to read the instruction booklet. Or have a friend who already knew how to play it and learn from him, which is pretty much how I did it.
And no, I'm not saying, "Durr, yeah, of COURSE you should have read the instructions!", but I guess I've always taken my inherent knowledge of the games mechanics for granted. But yeah, I can see where you're coming from.
The scanned instruction booklets they gave you with GBA games is really neat, wish they did that with all of them
-
RE: Retro Game Party: HD+ Remaster - March 2015 - Super Metroid
I heard this was the Metroid game to start with, opposed to the NES original?
edit: well not in a story sense, the definitive gameplay sense
It's pretty annoying. The rooms looks really similar and there's no map to show you where you are. Also just slow. I gave up.
I haven't played it but I think Zero Mission is a remake and you might as well try that. Also I started Super Metroid a long time ago and never finished, guess this is a good opportunity to tackle it again.
-
RE: General Zelda thread
There was a Gamecube collector's edition like that, which included Zelda 1, 2, Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask, plus a 20 minute demo of Windwaker (before it came out, obviously) and it was given away free as a promotional item.
Neat. Sounds like a waste not to sell it. Though wiki says they were just emulated so I guess there wasn't a lot of work put into it.
But yeah HD collections are the shit. I can play Metal Gear Solid 3 and Shadow of the Colossus at acceptable frame-rates now.
-
RE: General Zelda thread
It's $40 for a remaster of a 15 year old game with nothing new added to it
I wish Nintendo would do stuff like the Metal Gear Solid collection. The old games with nothing changed except controls/graphics and other minor things, sold for cheap.
I'd buy the shit out of a Zelda collection with like all the main console games released so far, in HD and with better framerates. -
RE: The Nintendo Thread
I don't know why you ask for Nintendo to make a game that forces you to buy $15 toys to be able to play as different characters
Well I wouldn't actually play or buy this hypothetical game. I'd just rather all this amiibo stuff gets corralled into one corner for those who do enjoy it, and so it doesn't infect all of Nintendo's other games.
Also I think it would be a good thing for everyone if they separated the game content and the figurines really. They could be priced cheaper if they were just for figurine collectors (because let's face it the quality is pretty awful). And whatever DLC content they produce would be cheaper as well.
-
RE: The Nintendo Thread
Amiibos are basically multi-purpose collectible DLC. You might not like those practices but it's actually pretty damn reasonable overall. The point is that they mostly do add minor perks and no game's core mechanics are affected by it because of them being optional.
DLC doesn't typically affect the core mechanics of the game it's attached to. Doesn't mean it's unreasonable for us to call the company out when the DLC is over-priced or whatever.
Only if you delete the data that's already written on them. Unlike say Disney Infinity figures which can be used across multiple playsets and even different systems.
Yeah this is really really dumb lol. It's impossible for them to simply allow saving the amiibo data on the console? What.
-
RE: The Nintendo Thread
idk why the raging on amiibo. It's not like you have to buy them. Or care. It's not like skylanders where without the toys you're useless.
No one is forcing me to buy any sort of product at all. Doesn't mean it's still not a shitty business practice.
The content added really isn't that insignificant at all. Well, depending on the game it isn't. The Smash Bros stuff is really cool and I'd like to try it if it weren't so absurdly expensive. Toad's Treasure Tracker looks like it will add a decent amount of re-playability to the levels (but it's still over-priced for what it is). And I heard on /v/ (could be just fake rumours, idk), that the amiibo Mario Party boards will allow players to move individually just like the older Mario Party games.
If it's just cosmetic stuff like in Mario Kart, I don't mind. When it unlocks actual characters with their own abilities ala Codename Steam, that shit's not cool. And like the amiibos don't even have any useful functionality in and of themselves either. They're literally just digital keys that unlock content already on the damn disk I bought. With Smashbros you could just save your characters on the wiimote to bring em over to friend's houses. Oh yeah AND some of them are getting increasingly rare so that content could be locked forever.. (yes I know about the cards, we'll see how that turns out).
Basically if you don't give a damn about the toys and just want the game stuff, you're going to be paying a LOT more than you should be. And let's be honest that's their goal here. They could have just released the figurines as just figurines, shit would have sold if not as much.
I actually wish Nintendo would just make their own skylander's game and leave it at that. If you want the "bringing toys to life" thing in one game, cool. Other people can just play Ninty's other games. But nope, they gotta shove this shit into every single one of their new releases now.
-

God I'm so sick of this dumbass amiibo shit being injected into every game. Makes me glad Mario Party is going the car route again, at least I won't be missing out on much.

@Monkey:
sigh
Who knows when we'll get such gorgeous 2D Neo-SNES type handheld Zeldas again.
Some collection of chimp brains has decided that 3D is betterer because it's more D's or some shit. Even though it's the same exact gameplay, but now it looks like an anus!…Doesn't ALBW's 3D-ness actually matter because of the whole turning into a painting thing (haven't played it)?
Though I do agree the game in general looks pretty ugly. Can't have 2D graphics on a 3DS, duh! What's weird is that the system can do much better when it comes to 3D graphics too looking at OoT and Majora's Mask. Like Link's model just looks plainly bad here:

RE: The Nintendo Thread
I just got Megaman X on VC and the framerate is ATROCIOUS
More than 4 enemies on the screen is just asking for a slow down.
And forget about that one mole stage where the excavator enemy chases you through the level (yes I'm not good with names), it's nigh unplayable. Was the original game like this or does the Wii U VC emulator just suck?
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
You can play as octopus now or they are just enemies from story mode?
I believe they are in the single player campaign only.

RE: General Zelda thread
So I just finished The Minish Cap on the Wii U VC, on my quest to play and finish all (most) of the Zelda games. Beat ALTTP, gave up on Spirit Tracks because of the annoying touch controls, in the middle of the Wind Waker and kinda got bored but plan to pick it up again.
Anyway The Minish Cap was pretty great indeed. Loved some of the overworld areas like Castor Wilds and Cloud tops, the whole kinstone system, and Roc's cape.
Also the entire game is really, really gorgeous. The second last boss fight (giant stingray thing?) was super cool.Still I'd put it lower than ALTTP simply because it was WAY TOO DAMN EASY. Seriously I didn't die once playing this thing. Even the final boss fight only took me one try to defeat and I lost half of my hearts just figuring out how he works. Plus Ezlo giving me unwanted hints from time to time.

RE: General Zelda thread
Personally I'm a big advocate of the original.
The 3DS version changes up some crucial things in ways that I think really hurt the experience for first time players. The changes make the game easier at the cost of depth and some are intrusive in annoying ways. Most changes that don't fall into those two categories are for the worse in my mind.
What the 3DS version gives you in return are really nice looking graphics, one improved boss fight, easier menu/map use and a couple decent moments of streamlining.
So my recommendation is to buy it on the Wii VC (or emulate it if you can't for whatever reason).
Thanks. It's available on club nintendo so I'll just get that. I suppose on PC I can play it with a better framerate/resolution but idk seems like a hassle.
-
RE: General Zelda thread
Got my 100%. I think I've exhausted all I have to say on the remake, really.
About the last sections on the moon, the goron dungeon felt a little easier, probably do to slightly enhanced rolling physics. The refraction works a lot better, at least I think it does. To make up for that, though, the zora section got worse. It's not harder, just more frustrating. Instead of just being a bunch of forks, it's split up into three sections, each with a correct path. At the start of each section, you have to hit a timed switch, which unlocks the correct path, which is at the end of a fork each time. The real problem is that now you have to fora jump out of the water in time, or else you get sucked through an exit and taken back to the very beginning. Of course this means needing magic and getting the jump timing right. Each section is just another chance to mess up a jump and be forced to do it all again. The magic didn't bother me, since I drank chateau romani earlier in the cycle, but the jumps were pretty annoying.
I probably should have beaten Majora without the Fierce Deity's mask first to figure out if the fight changed any, but I wanted some catharsis, so I wrecked him hard with my magic laser sword.
I don't want to bring up the whole argument all over again but what would you say is the definitive version of the game now that you've played it through? Trying to decide whether I should just get it on Wii VC, emulate when I get a new PC or get the 3DS version.
I've been trying to catch up on all the Zelda titles. ALTTP was great. Minish Cap is alright but gets a little easy/handholdey at parts. The dungeons are a tad easy, and bosses drop like 5 million hearts when you fight them it's ridiculous. Gorgeous graphics doe
