      @Robby:

      Canada actually has the borders closed except for essential businesses like shipping supplies, and family. You can't "easily" cross the border right now.

      The border is so huge it's hard to control exactly. Some time ago a number of American tourists were caught in Alberta and fined.
      Though using Canada to get to the EU is quite a leap different.

      @Satsuki:

      I think class more than anything. The women's colleges I know do try hard to make sure their students are diverse, but if anything they have to be careful they don't have TOO many Asian girls, or the balance will go off the other way. My cousin went to Wellesley (alma mater of Hillary Clinton), and going to her graduation I swear every time they called a common Asian surname there would be this giant line of girls. Seriously, when "Kim" was announced I thought they would never end.

      Although Wellesley has extra attraction to Asian families because Madame Chiang-kai Shek went there. They have a porcelain elephant from her in the Admissions office and everything.

      Do these schools also blatantly discriminate against Asian students like Ivy League schools do? Because with the latter I have no idea why that's even remotely considered acceptable.

      @Strooger:

      I can't remember the last time I had a class where the girls weren't the ones standing for the majority of the hands raised, joining student councils and administrating trips for the whole class. A girl taking up the role of the class mommy is damn near inevitable, whether it'd be the kids of a bunch of rich yuppies or otherwise. There is however a noticeable trend for guys to act dumber than they actually are and never commit to anything except the bare minimum because I guess they want to come of all flippant about school.

      That's been my experience in my entire schooling life too.

      This doesn't make any sense. My understanding was that Quebec was immigrant leery because immigrants ignore French and go right to English in terms of becoming Canadian, outside of that though multi-culturalism would be if anything exactly what French-Canadians should be all about. Versus the Anglo cultural overshadowing.

      It's not just about language. Like La Meute wouldn't be happy with a Senegalese hijabi being allowed to immigrate to Canada, just because she speaks French. I think it's similar to places like Newfoundland or the Maritimes- Quebec just has a stronger ethnic identity than most of the country and xenophobia stems from not wanting that identity to change.

      I really disliked that whole 'capture a wight and make an armstice' plot but I think they've dealt with it as well as they could now. Should be an entertaining coming season now that all the drama is straightforward and they can just show us massive battles every episode. I don't think there will be any serious conflict between Jon and Dany given how selfless a person he is, but who knows.

      @Bellamy_:

      I don't think she would ever do this, but it would be wise… and curently were all of them are like we dont want to fight each other and we dont want to burn citys? By sending all her armies to the north and letting Daenerys take the throne after the figth against the night king it would be easy for here to make a deal that she can have the rock with jamie.

      She doesn't trust Dany to uphold a deal. She views maintaining power and being safe as basically identical. She can imagine negotiating a deal and then seeing herself executed anyway, it's certainly something she'd do in the opposite position anyway.

      Found Breath of the Wild at the library! So finally playing this sob.

      The graphics are quite bad tbh. It's not like other Nintendo games, they're too ambitious for what the Wii U is capable of rendering. And I guess a year of PC gaming has spoiled me. And I'm more than a little peeved that they didn't include any touchpad features.

      Anyway I'm not very far into the game. I like the physics puzzles and experimenting with cooking. Combat seems like it could really creative if you use the sheikah tablet powers.

    • RE: Game of Thrones (tv show thread)

      Just caught up on this season. Some thoughts:

      • I wish the showrunners would think about the logistics behind these battles and the inter-continental travel a bit more. All this teleportation kinda shrinks the scale of this epic fantasy into more of a standard drama. For example, there was no reason to show Euron's ship in the battle of Casterly Rock. It would have been perfectly believable that the Ironborn fleet was split in two or something, with one half hanging out on the Western coast of Westeros.
      • I might have misunderstood the scene, but the Iron Bank wants to reinstate slavery? What.
      • I liked Bran and Sansa's interaction. He probably has no idea what he's saying, perceiving so many things at the same time.
      • Kit Harrington and Emilia Clarke really are some of the weakest actors in the cast. Pretty unfortunate that their characters ended up being the most important. The Lannisters are still great at least.
      • I liked the Hound's scenes with the brotherhood. Glad they took the time to slow down and show some of that. His vision in the fire was pretty awkward though.
      • Great ending scene with Olenna and Jaimie
      • Dany is being seriously stupid not just taking King's Landing. She could literally just fly to the Red Keep and annihilate everyone inside, without harming too many citizens. Effectively crippling the Lannister cause. Meanwhile she just lets her allies die.

      I think it's entirely reasonable to want primarily English literate immigrants, who will provide the most economic and social benefits to the US. The idea that this is racist is absurd.
      I'm actually really, really surprised that this isn't the case already for the US.

      @Aohige_AP:

      their nation is a land of immigrants, and that immigration is the very foundation of the nation and why it prides itself as the melting pot. America is unique, and thus its immigration policies is, and should be, unique.

      Mario Odyssey looks pretty great, so does Zelda.

      Splatoon 2 doesn't look like it has much going for it to justify it's existence. Maybe if it came with a full-fledged single-player mode, but there's no evidence of that. And also, doesn't a side-step/dodge defeat the point of swimming in ink to dodge?

      As usual the Switch appears reasonably priced but on closer inspection it's pretty terrible value-wise. 32 GB of internal memory- why? I'm pretty sure I can buy a PS4 for less too.

      Also I wouldn't mind paying for online if Nintendo had a level of service comparable to XBL, but it no doubt won't. Using your smartphone to chat sounds like the most clueless Nintendo-y thing ever.

      Yes, they should. Our country's elections should not be decided by California, Texas and New York. Combined, they make up nearly 1/3rd of our population and none of them are swing states.

      Lol, did you even read what you wrote… If they make up only 1/3 of the US population then they wouldn't be deciding a popular vote election!
      There are Democrats in Texas and Republicans in California, millions of them. But their votes mean relatively little compared to some suburban Pennsylvanian city. And this is a 'fairer' tally of the American electorate to you? Even the reliably red rural states don't get much attention from presidential candidates.

      It looks like the more sparsely populated states already have a lot of disproportionate power in the House, there's nothing wrong with letting the President be decided by the popular vote. At the very least, EC votes by state can be handed out proportionally instead of a winner take all system.

      No Trudeau has said repeatedly that he supports the construction of the pipeline. Trump has as well, but his whole rhetoric about patriotic trade-deals and profit sharing might complicate things. This would be really good for Alberta.

      –- Update From New Post Merge ---

      @Louis-1988:

      Trump won 31 states to Clintons 19 and was leading her all the way in the popular vote until she defeated him overwhelmingly in the far-left leaning California. It's not perfect, but the electoral college allows for a more broad perspective on how the entire country feels as opposed to allowing just a couple of titan states likes Texas or California decide entire elections all on their own. That's my take on why we use an electoral college, anyway.

      California doesn't decide the popular vote on its own. You're acting like there aren't any Republicans in California, or that some of the votes in the swing states weren't really close (Pennsylvania for example). The EC makes Trump's victory look much larger than it was because it's winner take all.

      Been playing the Far Cry games. I was playing Far Cry 3 but it froze and I lost a huge chunk of progress, so I just said fuck it and started playing Far Cry 4.

      And they're really great open world games! I felt like something exciting was going to happen every time I wondered out into the forests. They've got a good, open ended approach to their missions. It's usually just 'kill these enemies in this area in whatever way you want'. As opposed to the scripted nonsense that plagues so many other open world games (i.e GTA).

      I know a lot of people criticize Ubi open world games as being just endless series of menu upgrades and checklists, and that describes the AC games really well. But the shit you have to do in Far Cry to complete those checklists is genuinely fun, and it results in a little bit of progress every time you want to just fuck around in the world. Except for the towers though, they're completely pointless beyond the traveling you have to do to get to them.

      Nintendo's pretty bad at regularly supplying either the 3DS or the Wii U with a steady supply of games, and part of that problem is that their focus is split between the two.

But it sounds like you're saying "poachers actually help animals because they force the funding and creation of measures to protect the animals… from those very poachers!" Which is pretty dumb. Might as well say "hey murderers are great for the population because they help fund prisons to jail murderers."

      Habitat loss is often a bigger issue for these animals and in that sense organized hunting can be really beneficial. With limited quotas on the amount of animals that can be killed each year you can create a sustainable population and the hundreds of thousands of dollars that the hunters spend can then be put into conservation efforts.

      I see. So it's not a permanent squad kind of thing?

      @Foolio:

      Kind of shitty night of playing. Most of the stage modifications are worse IMO, and the new ranking system (both for unranked and ranked) seems meh. The lag is at least as bad. There's some interesting new gear I guess. The one thing I found super refreshing was the new music. Even the one that's just a remix of an existing theme.

      I still have to figure out how the Splatling is even supposed to be used in turf wars. I guess strategically it's kind of similar to a sniper? Does feel weird.

      The Slosher I don't know. Almost everyone I see using it is basically treating it like a Blaster. In other words, jump up and dump ink at someone, swim to the side (or whatever strategy calls for), rinse and repeat. Only staying above ink to do a mid-air fling. I can't really do that. It's okay at covering ground and it's reasonably powerful, but I always find myself taking at least two hits to kill and it never worked well. I want to give it more of a chance at some point but I dunno.

      I think Splatling is kinda like a sniper but more squiffer than e-liter.
      Definitely requires you to play defensively and predict your opponent's moves well but it still has mobility
      You pretty much ned to use the splat wall constantly because of the charge time.

      The slosher I'm finding more fun. It as a good amount of range and great when it comes to sloshing upwards or over obstacles.
      I don't think it can kill without at least two shots, but I could be wrong. It's a bit like the nozzlenose in that you have to time your trigger finger right. It's not as slow as the blaster to get another hit in so you gotta spam it a little.

      Also how do squad battles work?? I'd totally join a squad with peeps here
      Or play private battles, whatever

      I nominated Punch Out but I like the idea of playing Metal Gear Solid for this

      Dude Akainu was about to kill Coby in the middle of the war, for a really dumb reason at that. He's pretty evil. Did you forget about him blowing up that ship of innocent civilians at Ohara? And his whole beef with the Celestial Dragons was that they caused him to lose face, that's it.

      He's different form the kind of chaotic evil Blackbeard is but it's obvious he only cares about a kind of top down, perverse justice that has nothing to do with the rule of law

      Sengoku we've seen actually demonstrate some kindness.

    • RE: Theories regarding the Yonkos and Kaido most of all.

      If he could eat multiple devil fruits, Blackbeard wouldn't be so special now would he?

      I don't like the ope ope fruit idea. Kaidou most likely has some special devil fruit that helps, but I think Oda was mostly trying to show us how strong this guy is. He's so powerful he can't even kill himself type of thing
