Big Mom (one of the most fascinating characters in the series to me) is back and Sanji is having a one-on-one against a dinosaur. This is a good era for One Piece.

RE: 916: ''A Living Hell - Luffy's Humiliation In the Great Mine''
This was a really nice episode. 'Slavery mines' are always a good setting (Dragon Quest 5, last year's Yu-No anime), and it's great how hardened and dangerous Luffy has become. So long as he's in this situation, he's lost every bit of his good nature. 20 years and almost 1000 episodes later and One Piece is still managing to make its main character feel fresh.

RE: 892: ''The Land of Wano! To the Land of Samurai Where Cherry Blossoms Dance''
@.access:
That opening! FUCK! This is probably the first time I actually enjoy a One Piece opening since… I don't know, when did the openings started being 3 minutes long?
Crazy Rainbow Star. Been a long time; I was still a teenager whenever the double-length opening themes started and the ending themes were removed. At this point the presence of ending themes entailed a small enough portion of the anime's portion that it feels a bit like early installment weirdness, to quote TVTropes.

RE: 882: "The Paramount War - The Pirate King's Inherited Will"
I feel like mostly of the filler now is done. Next week we'll get some flashback stuff from Shiraoshi (but also my favourite scene of the Reverie arc!) and then i think they will go 'full Reverie'.
Thanks, this is good to know. I've never heard anything but universally good things about Reverie, but the way the anime's been handled ever since Whole Cake Island concluded has been atrocious.
-
RE: 856: ''The Forbidden Secret! Katakuri's Merienda''
but it's also no "Search for the Wind"
I actually loved Search for the Wind :P This opening… well... it's probably my least favorite in the series thus far.
Good episode on the whole, though. I think Toei did a really nice job of changing things up to keep them fresh by implementing the manga-styled panels.
-
RE: 591: ''Chopper Gets Angry - The Master's Tyrannical Experiments''
I haven't watched the episode or listened to the new opening song yet, but I give it a 10/10 simply for not being 'We Go.'
-
RE: 589: ''The World's Worst - The Terrifying Scientist Caesar''
@Mark:
Sigh I guess I'm passing next week's episode. I really don't care much about these crossovers.
I skipped last year's crossover because the original One Piece/Toriko crossover from April 2011 was pretty terrible, but the presence of Dragon Ball Z this time around has caught my interest.

RE: 587: ''Clash! Law vs. Vice-Admiral Smoker''
@Miss:
I'm gonna start charging a toll fee around here.
Every time someone brings up the obvious fact we didn't get an opening, while regarding the fact nothing ANNOUNCED there'd be a new opening, I get five dollars and the rights to use your body for one night indiscriminately and mercilessly.
Sounds kind of hot
Man, I sure am pissed off there there's no new opening
-
RE: 586: ''Big Trouble! Luffy Sinks into the Frozen Lake''
Obligatory "I wish 'We Go' would get the hell out of town already" post of the week. Why do the worst openings last the longest? (Believe, We Go)
-
RE: 582: ''A Shock! The Secret of the Island is Revealed''
We Go, pls go (I never even liked the song that much in the first place)
With that said, the daycare looks nice and I hope it's a regular locale these next few episodes. Very colorful and appealing.
-
RE: 578: ''Z's Ambition Chapter - Luffy vs. Shuzo!''
@Vegard:
Absolutely none. Not even if there will be a new opening or not.
I hope there will be. We Go! is a good song (as are most One Piece openings, though We Go is honestly pretty middle tier for me; my favorite opening is probably the much maligned Kaze wo Sagashite), but it's definitely worn out its welcome for me… October 2011 was quite some time ago. The beginning of a new story arc at the beginning of a new year is the most logical spot possible to introduce a new opening, and previously I just took it for granted that a new opening would begin with Punk Hazard, though I do kinda find myself wondering now since we're so close to episode in question without any sort of announcement.
-
RE: 573: ''Finally Setting Sail! Farewell to Fishman Island''
I think the Fishman arc is underrated and has quite a few good points, but I can't deny that I'm glad to see this stretch of the story come to an end. Do we know yet if there's going to be a filler arc (One Piece's filler arcs having always been something I've quite enjoyed, aside from that terrible Goat Island thing) or continuing straight to Punk Hazard?
-
RE: 550: ''Hody's Incident - The Foul Drug's True Power!''
Good episode. For some reason I found this one quite a bit more creepy and disturbing than your usual One Piece fare; despite all the bad things I heard about Fishman Island, I've actually been enjoying this story arc quite a bit.
-
RE: 545: ''Fishman Island Trembles! The Celestial Dragon's Arrival''
Yeah, I thought this was a perfectly good episode. Out of curiosity, has it been stated whether there's a new opening coming up soon? We Go has been around for right at nine months (Around 30 or so episodes), so I'm guessing the series will cycle to a new opening song soon.
-
RE: 495: '''I Won't Run' - Ace's Do-or-Die Rescue Operation''
Wow, that was far too much looping with Dadan having trouble figuring out who Sabo was. There's stretching, and then there's plain annoying. They should know better.
Haha, yeah, they definitely passed the annoying mark. I was like 'Jesus Christ, TOEI, get on with it.'
I'm enjoying the Sabo arc very much on the whole, though. The way that Luffy is treated bothers me (He's bullied by Ace, and is very obviously an outsider in their group), but it makes for some good drama and makes me wonder how Ace's relationship with Luffy developed into what it was during the series proper, where I couldn't imagine Ace ever treating Luffy with anything but complete respect and kindness.

RE: 489: ''Enter Shanks! The Great War Comes to an End''
More realistically, I'm going to say that with 17 chapters of manga material left to cover and Spring right around the corner (Remember Spring usually indicates the new TV "season" in Japan) I'm more willing to bet Toei's going to stretch it out to 26 episodes tops. This give them 9 filler episodes to expand upon the Straw Hats training, promote movies, or just adapt something weird that Oda has produced and will allow them more time to promote the big changes upcoming for the anime. Or they could just play it straight and animate the next 17 chapters and BAM!
O-chan
Personally, I hope they go the 'expanded training arc' route, Toei has always been good with those. I thought the Dragon Ball anime was much better off for the inclusion of the ~10 episodes of training for both the 23rd Tenkaichi Budokai and the Saiyan invasion.
-
RE: 488: ''A Desperate Cry - Seconds of Courage that Change Destiny''
Shanks is going to put an end to the most boring arc in the One Piece anime?
My hero~
I'm looking forward to the upcoming flashback, it looks a lot more interesting to me than the past seven months have been.
Of course, there have been plenty of moments during the War arc that I liked; and for this episode, I enjoyed Coby's speech at the end, both what he said itself and the others' reactions to it. I really do think that Coby doesn't belong in the Marines, though. It's just… not something he's cut out for.

RE: Funi Files Lawsuit
Look, I'm not, nor was I ever, trying to sit here and tell people that they should stop doing what they're doing, or even that it's really morally wrong.
Ah, okay; then I apologize and hope I didn't cause any offense.
-
RE: Funi Files Lawsuit
@dirt:
But the point is that it's not just Oda getting the money. He has never been the only one getting the money for making this manga. Shueisha distributes it in Japan, and there are lots of people who in the long and short run might just be dropped because the revenue isn't coming in from people that steal the manga.
Same thing for the anime with Toei.
What if I wait until One Piece enters the public domain to download it?
-
RE: Funi Files Lawsuit
@dirt:
You're not buying the original Japanese Shounen Jump from whence those scans came.
More lost revenue.
Oh well, it doesn't really matter. Oda's probably so rich at this point from the Japanese fanbase that he could buy Japan if he wanted to.
-
RE: Funi Files Lawsuit
Wait, I don't understand. How does reading scanlations of newly released Japanese chapters do any financial damage to Viz (people who distribute and translate the manga) if you buy every single volume that Viz releases, ie you pay for every product that you can possibly pay for? I'm not saying the scanlation business itself does no harm, just that I don't see how a single person reading scanlations does any harm if they buy every English release whenever it comes out. And I don't get where the anime comes in, since I never said anything relating to the anime. Are you sure you're not misreading my post?
-
RE: Funi Files Lawsuit
News flash people: None of us, I repeat, NONE OF US are entitled to be able to illegally download One Piece in ANY FORM. That includes anime AND the fucking manga. You all, myself included, are doing something illegal. WE are the fucking bad guys. There is NOTHNG WRONG with a rights holder trying to protect their IP.
Now stop acting like I'm sitting on some fucking high horse I was never on.
Eh, I think calling yourself the 'bad guy' is a bit much. Like I said before…
I don't really have any moral opposition to pirating and I hope the 1,337 that are being sued get off as easy as possible (If not avoid punishment outright), but I don't think reading scanlations is exactly the same thing. Whose money are you taking away, exactly? The current chapters won't be released until the mid or late 2010s, at the moment there's no wallet to give the money to, and if they buy the manga volumes whenever they're released I don't see how they're causing any financial loss at all. They're buying everything that's possible to buy.
Reading scanlations of new chapters might be illegal, but I can't think of any way that it causes any harm. The people reading it are almost entirely those who can't speak Japanese and wouldn't buy the original version anyway, so no losses there. You're not taking anything away from Viz because the English version of the current chapters entail a product that doesn't exist yet. If you buy the manga releases as they come out, then you're buying every English product that actually exists and doing everything you can to support the company.
I don't know, I just think the "I'm the bad guy even though what I'm doing causes no damage to anything, if I was caught I'd deserve to be punished even though what I'm doing is harmless and I give Viz every dollar I possibly can since I consistently buy the English releases" attitude's a bit much. You seem to be equating morality with legality, when they really aren't always the same.
-
RE: Funi Files Lawsuit
lol
'Entitlement' is starting to become the new buzzword on Arlong Park.
-
RE: Funi Files Lawsuit
No it's exactly the same, we are all stealing someones IP which is taking money out of someones wallet.

RE: Funi Files Lawsuit
I read that if the case goes through, each of the 1,337 accused will be fined somewhere in the range of $7,000 - $10,000.
-
RE: Funi Files Lawsuit
I have no sympathy at all.
I do. There's better ways to handle the situation than coming from out of nowhere and harshly punishing a group of random people for a crime that has no previous consistent precedent for being punished; the pirates are probably going to be reamed up the ass with huge fines, much more than they honestly deserve, simply because Funi wants to make an example out of them. I think the people at Funimation are just being dicks here, and I wish them nothing but the worst.
-
RE: Funi Files Lawsuit
What a weird development. I will be following this closely to see if funi can get anywhere with this lawsuit.
I hope they can't.

Why is the grass green?
Why is the sky blue?
Why does the world rotate?
Why will this thread soon be locked? You forgot one: "Why is this thread being used as a trolling haven instead of an in-depth character discussion of Sanji's flaws like I intended for it to be?"
-
RE: Why is Sanji such a jerk?
Why? It's not a rule that I must have positive opinions on every character. :( Besides, Sanji brought it on himself by being a douche. He wasn't even sympathetic to Duval despite the hardships he put him through.
-
Why is Sanji such a jerk?
He treats anyone that isn't a girl like garbage.
-
RE: Do you view Nakama like Luffy does?
@Ao:
"Friendship" is much, much more complex than it's depicted in One Piece.
So, obviously my answer is "no."Could you elaborate? I've given it some thought, but I'm not sure what you mean, or how One Piece fails in regards to depicting friendship.

RE: Favorite One Piece Story Arc (from either the Anime or Manga)
What are your thoughts towards Thriller Bark, Baratie, and Captain Morgan, Donquixote? Placing them last obviously isn't a good sign, but do you dislike them, or are they merely your least favorites?
-
RE: Favorite One Piece Story Arc (from either the Anime or Manga)
Uh… why is nobody listing the Captain Morgan arc? Isn't that generally considered one of the most exciting arcs in the history of One Piece?
-
RE: When fansub groups quit… count of vegapunk just an opinion...
The high definition episodes don't look any better to me. The only difference is them not running properly on my computer.
-
RE: Kidd new Nemesis or new Rival?
Smoker and Buggy are more side characters. I like Kidd, but I seriously doubt he's gonna be the last battle. Blackbeard has everything for the final villain.
Except for an interesting personality or character design. There's a long list of characters with a more commanding presence, everyone from Whitebeard and Shanks down to Don Krieg. Having Blackbeard provide as the ultimate enemy in One Piece would be about as satisfying as the last battle in Dragon Ball being against Panputt.

RE: Potential bad news for fansubs
Boss, you gotta have some more faith than that, Funimation isn't a mediocre company anymore.
Funimation was never mediocre. They jumped from terrible to good. I am proud of them.
-
RE: Potential bad news for fansubs
Why? What other crappy opinions have you heard from me that you didn't like besides this one?
None at all, fire. None at all.
Look, saying I'd be happy about Kaizoku-Fansubs going away was a bit harsh, after all the people running it are fans, there the best-known fansub group that does "One Piece" (and for good reasons), and there will always be people that won't have access to the official releases no matter what. But they're a minority, but more importantly I liked Kaizoku-Fansubs because without them I wouldn't have been able to watch the original "One Piece", but the only reason I went through them was because all there was was a shitty adaptation by 4Kids. If FUNimation or VIZ had it on Toonami from the beginning and made their usual good dub I would've just watched it on T.V. Not that FUNimation has "One Piece" I expected Kaizoku-Fansubs to stop, I mean that's why they kept doing it when 4Kids licensed it, because 4Kids didn't release the original version. But no, Kaizoku-Fansubs said something like "well we're in Japan so they can't do anything to us" or some bullshit like that, and again they just broke the unwritten code that fansubs cease when a series is licensed.
There's no need in my mind of fansubs for "One Piece" anymore, except perhaps that "One Piece" hasn't been re-released by FUNimation in Canada, England and Australia, but that'll happen eventually. That's why I wouldn't mind if Kaizoku-Fansubs, as good as it is, was just stopped.
Now here's a post I can agree with. Wishing that they'd stop out of their own volition is fine and makes perfect sense, but I'd hate to see them shut down. I've always disliked unnecessary legal interference, whether it's Square shutting down that harmless Chrono Ressurection project or authors saying that no fanfiction can be produced of their work. Shutting down fansub projects that put no significant dent in Funimation's One Piece revenue would certainly fall under the same category.
-
RE: Potential bad news for fansubs
Now that 4Kids is out of the picture, there's no need for fansubs and I'd actually be happy if a group like Kaizoku-Fansubs were forced to stop doing what they're doing.
You have some unbelievably terrible opinions, Firecrouch.

I just thought of the PERFECT ending for the series.
There should be a grand battle at Raftel between the Strawhat Pirates and the Phoenix Pirates (the Ice Hunter arc, for you fools who avoid anything that isn't your precious manga). It lasts for two weeks. The Straw Hats emerge victorious, but Luffy decides to let Phoenix Puzzle have One Piece in honor of his courage; despite being much weaker, Phoenix's crew fought tirelessly. Luffy and the group get back on Thousand Sunny and start their long return trip to East Blue. The series ends with Phoenix opening the treasure chest and shouting, "I am the Pirate King!" to the heavens.
Anyone like this idea as much as I do? It's a nice twist ending and has a deep moral behind it.
-
RE: Is it entirely 4kids' fault?
Yes, 4Kids is entirely to blame. Even if there was somebody else more responsible, I'd still blame 4Kids. They're a terrible, evil company that need to be hated even if there's objectively no reason to, but that's never the case since they're an evil company that deliberately does as many evil things as they possibly can.

Does anyone else think my Driver's Ed teacher was a real jerk?
I got an automatic failing grade on the driving test back in 10th grade (2003-2004) because I got mad at this person that was tailgating me and slammed on the brakes. The tailgater was going way too fast, so he had to swerve around me to avoid a collision. I admit that was a bit dangerous, but to fail me just because I lost my temper for one instant? Come on, I was just a kid (sixteen). I should have just gotten ten points off or something.

RE: Chapter 482 "Morning Comes" Discussion
Another shichibukai. Is it safe to say that Luffy will go up to 400,000,000 or 500,000,000 because of this?

So… about Family, the ending song...
Do you think the Straw Hats would have referred to each other as family during the Romance Dawn arc? Buggy? Kuro? Baratie? Arlong? Roguetown? Drum?
