I am stoked! I really hope this comes to fruition. Worst case scenario, this show bombs and is cancelled half-way through the first season. It won't do any harm to the series we all know and love. If ya don't like it, do what any ordinary person would do and 1) don't watch it and 2) move on with your life! I am very curious to see how this will turn out. I think part of the reason these sorts of adaptations don't succeed is because the fans don't give them a chance. Granted, we have gotten some pretty terrible movies like Dragon Ball Evolution that are deserving of the criticism. But people need to understand that this TV series can leave out certain plots and characters, fuse story arcs together, leave out certain details and change certain things to better suit live-action and still make a solid adaptation that captures the spirit of the original manga. Take the Marvel Cinematic Universe for instance. Granted, this series won't have the budget of a Marvel movie, but if that's what you're focused on then you're missing the point. Also, I'm a huge fan of Prison Break, and while that show is the farthest you can get from One Piece in tone, I'm not disappointed to see that the same producers are behind this project.

RE: Can a One Piece Y7-FV dub be done right?
I think it could be done right for the most part. If done 'right', I think a hypothetical Y7-FV dub could garner a huge following in the U.S like Yu-Gi-Oh or Naruto. That would mean more games and merchandise being brought over among other things. Of course I would only accept a Y7 dub if it were accompanied by an uncut DVD release. If One Piece could get the leeway that Naruto got on Toonami a few years back then it could be done easily and retain the story just fine. If you censor it more strictly, then some story elements like Belamir being killed right in front of her kids might be lost.
Anyway. Censor the blood, keep the language PG, and do the best you can to retain the story while keeping all the names, terminology & original background music intact with accurate translations, and do justice to the show in terms of voice work and direction then a Y7 dub could still do great. You don't gotta butcher the show, change names, terminology, replace the music, make terribly inaccurate scripts, take all Japanese culture out of it, and do horrible voice work to make a show kid-friendly. You just gotta take some of the violence and pervy jokes out of it.
Unfortunately, the time for that is long gone. 4K!Ds kind of ruined whatever chance One Piece had to become massively popular in the States. At least we have an uncut broadcast and uncut DVDs, that's really all you could ask for. I only wish One Piece were done right from the beginning so that it might be more popular, and it's future more secure. (they could be cranking out new One Piece episodes 10 years from now, hopefully the show's cult following will be enough to sustain DVD sales for that long)

RE: Funimation DVD Discussion III (Please Check First Post for FAQ)
Well they certainly aren't against the idea of supporting each other. Viz's official One Piece site has a big ol' banner at the top of the page supporting the simulcast. Likewise, the Funimation site for One Piece has links to Viz's site and advertises Viz's release of the manga and is currently promoting that giveaway Viz is running. I don't think Viz and Funi would immediately shoot down a joint venture, especially if it has the potential of boosting sales of both the manga and the anime.
Also, the FUNimation One Piece logo has the VIZ "Shonen Jump" title on top.

RE: Funimation DVD Discussion III (Please Check First Post for FAQ)
I'm OK with fanservice
ps: How much are the standard 4 episode Japanese dvd releases?About $50. They also have "Log Collections" (aka box sets) that are typically 10 to 14 episodes, and cost about $120. Yeah, anime DVDs are astronomically expensive over there. Well, I think movies (and maybe games) in general are like that over there. Their manga is a bit cheaper though.

RE: Funimation DVD Discussion III (Please Check First Post for FAQ)
It would be ideal for the Toonami airings to be further ahead than the DVD releases. That's how it's supposed to be. We could tune in every week to see newly dubbed One Piece episodes, and then buy the bilingual DVD sets when they come out. I would love that. As it stands now; however, that won't happen unless they put the DVD releases on a pretty long hiatus or speed up One Piece on Toonami. A speed up would be awesome, but will probably never happen. Even if One Piece is really successful on Toonami, I think they will treat it equally with other shows and try to appease everybody instead of pushing One Piece too much.

RE: Funimation DVD Discussion III (Please Check First Post for FAQ)
Funi gave us movie 8 when we were at skypiea (even though they hadn't dubbed alabasta, the arc b4),hell were getting movie 10 before season 5 finishes. Don't think that will be much of an issue.
Yeah, but the Alabasta arc had just finished airing on TV. Movie 8 didn't spoil anything. With movie 10, they're going so far beyond where the dub story is now that they'll have one or two more crew members to where they are now, one of whom hasn't been cast yet.

RE: "Davy Back Arc" Toonami Talkback
Well, he sort of shamed the Straw Hat name by crying like a little baby in front of everyone. He didn't do himself any justice either. He's cute and fluffy, but he's a 'man' too. If you saw Zoro or Sanji acting that way, you wouldn't think anyone was being too hard on them. His whining also demonstrated a lack of faith in his crew to bring him back. So Zoro's speech was totally warranted, and bad ass if I don't say so myself.
-
RE: "Davy Back Arc" Toonami Talkback
Enjoyed this episode a lot. I didn't care for the Davy Back fight when I watched through it initially but seeing it in English for the first time really renews my interest. And just the euphoria of seeing uncut One Piece on Toonami/Adult Swim is amazing.
Looks like its doing pretty well too. Did better than Soul Eater, which is a somewhat more established show over here with an untarnished reputation. After Naruto and before Soul Eater is a good time slot for the show. It grabs up people coming off Naruto and those waiting for Soul Eater to come on. Only way they could do better would be to give One Piece Naruto's time slot. In between Bleach and Naruto on top of airing 30 minutes earlier would be perfect. :happy:Plus these 'uncut Naruto' episodes have been on DVD for like 7 years. Dunno why they don't advertise One Piece as being 'uncut' like that since it's never aired even remotely uncut on TV before.

RE: Funimation DVD Discussion III (Please Check First Post for FAQ)
Haven't seen the anime, but I reread the manga recently. Can't say it was too slow. Don't really see why people have a huge problem with it; unless they only have a problem with the anime.
Skypeia was wayyyy wayyy slower. Less happened and it was more fighting, yet I feel like I hear more bad about Thriller Bark. Just doesn't make any sense to me.
Also, you like it less than Davy Back Fight and Skypeia and Fishmen Island? Wow. That's harsh. The anime adaptation must be bad…
Skypeia's one of my favorite arcs, so I definitely like it better. Fishman Island is probably my second least favorite, but I like it more than Thriller Bark. I haven't seen the Fishman Island anime though. I guess there's the Davy Back arc which gets tiring quickly and is drawn out, but I was talking more about the bigger story arcs. Davy Back is basically canonical filler.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
Compared to the pacing we get these days being 1:1… That doesn't sound as bad as they say.
I suppose Skypeia's characters were more interesting (though Moria was more interesting than Eneru), but the plot of Thriller Bark was more engaging. Skypeia was just constant fighting.
Totally disagree with that. Thriller Bark put the character's in some tight situations, introduced us to an interesting new villain, and of course gave us a new crew mate. But I didn't find the plot more engaging. While watching I just wanted it to hurry up and end so they could advance to the next big adventure honestly. Skypiea's plot was more interesting to me. It had an intense backstory that really made you wanna see Luffy kick the seemingly unstoppable villain-with-a-god-complex's ass.
Iunno, just chalk it up to a difference of opinion I guess.

Man, just think if FUNimation had licensed One Piece from the get-go. The dub would be on hiatus because we'd be too close to the Japanese airings. Or we'd even be seeing new dub episodes on TV before they come out on DVD. VIZ Manga would say Zoro. Ah well. I'm glad to be on Enies Lobby myself. Sucks we gotta sit through Thriller Bark before Impel Down and Marineford. No offense to TB fans but it's my least favorite canonical story and it drags on forever in the anime.

RE: Funi TV Discussion (Saturday Night/Sunday Morning 1:00 a.m., USA Toonami)
Which brings up an even more important question .Did he or toei animation, have any say in the actors for the 4kids version of one piece?
I have a hard time imagining them, allowing that atrocity. I doubt that they did though knowing 4kids.
Doubt it. I think Toei trusted 4K!Ds to make One Piece a success the same way they did Yu-Gi-Oh! and Pokemon, so they basically let them do whatever they wanted to with it.
After 4K!Ds failed the series and FUNimation gave the show a second chance, then Toei decided to become more involved.
-
RE: Funi TV Discussion (Saturday Night/Sunday Morning 1:00 a.m., USA Toonami)
None of the voice acting in the 4K!Ds dub was better. Maybe some of the voices were better, but the acting? Hell no. I liked 4K!Ds Zoro's voice a lot but his acting and voice direction was just awful. The terrible script, censorship, and background music didn't help but the acting across the board was just bad.
I still can't fathom people's distaste for Vale's Sanji, or at least how they could think Moo did any better. Vale's Sanji doesn't sound as suave as his Japanese counter part but it's a fine voice with great acting that's infintely better and does more justice to the character than anything out of Moo or 4K!Ds.

RE: Funimation DVD Discussion III (Please Check First Post for FAQ)
The first 205 episodes weren't animated or mastered in HD. So if they were released on Blu-Ray, they would only be upscales. You get the same quality by playing your One Piece DVDs in a PS3 or Blu-Ray player which upscales the video.
For episodes 206 and onwards; however, the episodes are legitimately Hi-Def. So you do gain by watching them on Blu-Ray. I think the quality upgrade is worth it, but some people don't seem to notice or care as much about their cartoons being in HD versus live action film. I think FUNi probably would sell the remaining voyages in Blu-Ray (barring Toei being restrictive) if there were a bigger market for the One Piece DVDs. It's especially hard for them to commit to a Blu-Ray line for a long series such as One Piece. They had to cancel even their Dragon Ball Z Blu-Rays. FUNi will release movies and short series (like Movie 8 or FullMetal Alchemist) on Blu, but I wouldn't expect One Piece season sets on Blu in the foreseeable future.
Another example (though not FUNimation) is Bleach and Naruto. I'm sure those episodes must be airing HD by now, but aside from the Bleach and Naruto movies–you haven't seen VIZ release either of the TV series' themselves on Blu-Ray.

RE: Marineford Abridged(2chap. pace, no fillers)
Yeah, that would be awesome. Trying to catch up a buddy of mine on the latest episodes who doesn't have a lot of time on his hands. Got all the 'One Pace' Fishman Island Abridged downloaded–getting Marineford Abridged on top of that would be really convenient.
-
RE: Funimation DVD Discussion III (Please Check First Post for FAQ)
I never bought the voyages, and I'm glad for it now because of the collections. (save for the voyage one and movie 8). You get double the episodes for half the price with the collections, and it made collecting the first 206 episodes of One Piece–at first a really daunting task--a lot easier on my wallet. I may start buying the voyages for episodes 206+ for now on, but now that those episodes are airing on Toonami I can be more patient. Then again, FUNi may not continue the collections for a good while.

RE: Funimation Strong World Thread

RE: "Davy Back Arc" Toonami Talkback
Soul Eater is a short, 50 episode show whose production was pre-planned and budgeted. Those shows will always have better animation than long-running Shonen series where they make the episodes as they go.
-
RE: "Davy Back Arc" Toonami Talkback
I watched the episode tonight with a friend who's never really watched One Piece, and he said he fell in love with the show instantly. He thought the sea-monkeys were really funny. I know not everyone will take to the show that well, but it gives me hope anyway.
The reason for them starting at episode 207 is covered in this interview. http://shonenjump.viz.com/node/1599
They basically wanted to air the 16:9 HD episodes, while showing episodes that no one has seen on TV in any shape or form–including the 4K!Ds dub. They also wanted to air newer episodes that One Piece fans wouldn't be as bored with--seeing as how the other episodes have been on DVD for years at this point. Also, if One Piece is successful on Toonami, and stays for the long haul, then there's a chance the TV broadcasts will eventually go past where the DVDs are. One day we might be watching never-before-seen FUNi dubbed One Piece on TV, before they come out on DVD, the way it's supposed to be. If they start from the beginning or earlier then that will never happen.
-
RE: "Davy Back Arc" Toonami Talkback
I remember when it aired on Toonami before. Sometimes the eye catchers were included, other times they weren't. Sometimes an eye catcher strangely made it in while the first or second one didn't. Just depends how much time those commercials demand. It's not really a big deal. Same with the OP/ED edits. It'd be nice if they didn't cut them, but whatever. We've got One Piece on Cartoon Network totally uncut now. Zoro, cigarette, everything. Who would have ever thought we'd see the day?
-

Ok, so I know this is old news…But oh my god. I'm watching the Whiskey Peak arc dubbed for the first time, and I swear Mr. 5 sounds just like Robert Downey Jr's black guy impression from Tropic Thunder. Seriously?
-
RE: Funimation DVD Discussion III (Please Check First Post for FAQ)
Oh, my bad. I remembered it wrong for some reason. Probably read it that way in the simulcasts. Well, I do think 'Second Gear' is better than 'Gear Two'.
By the way, my super-long rant about the name shouldn't be indicative of how many craps I give about it. It's really not a big deal at all, I just had nothing better to do haha.
-
RE: Funimation DVD Discussion III (Please Check First Post for FAQ)
Gear second is so awkward to say in English. what's the point of disregarding grammar just to follow the Japanese way to a t?
Either "gear two" or "second gear" and I prefer the latter.
For whatever reason I think it still sounds better to say 'Gear Second'. Maybe that's just because I'm used to the sub. But whenever I heard Luffy say it the first time it didn't strike me as being grammatically incorrect or anything. I just presumed that was what Oda intended and went with it. When Luffy says 'Gear Second', it sounds natural to me because he's announcing his transformation or power up, and that's what he calls it. Because it's not something you would normally hear, it doesn't seem weird for him to randomly say it. I think it sounds stranger to hear Luffy randomly say 'Second Gear' because it's a proper term you hear in regular conversation, and it's without any proper context you're used to hearing it in.
Also, you really don't know whether Oda's naming scheme was made in error because he doesn't know the language, or if he did know the proper order of the words and chose to reverse them anyway–which would be an artistic decision rather than a linguistic mistake. And assuming it was Oda's informed (rather than uninformed) decision like I always have, then FUNi is changing what the author intended rather than correcting his mistake like some here believe they are.
FUNi probably made this decision on their own, but they might have also done it to conform to VIZ's translation. Since the manga translators are only working with text, they might have assumed reversing the order of 'Gear Second' was the proper way to do things--without knowing that it was spoken in English that way in the anime. The fact that it was Gear Second in the Wii game also supports this, since the manga hadn't gotten that far in the States at the time. Toei and Shueisha want as much consistency between their localizations as possible too. That's further evidence that FUNi changed the naming scheme for reasons other than making it 'grammatically correct'.
Anyway, that's just my take on the situation. I might be wrong, and it's really not a big deal. But if I had my way, it would be 'Gear Second'. It doesn't alienate any of the fans, it's what you hear in the original, and it probably makes things easier on the dubbing.
-
RE: Funimation DVD Discussion III (Please Check First Post for FAQ)
Huh. I always pronounced it right. I thought it was fairly straight forward, lol. I guess I can see how some people would say it differently though.

RE: Funimation DVD Discussion III (Please Check First Post for FAQ)
They don't have to dub a hundred episodes a year or anything. If FUNimation ever finishes dubbing One Piece, it will at least be a few years after the final episode airs in Japan. Nothing wrong with that. I'm happy with 50 episodes a year, really. At least that way we're getting about as many episodes put out per year as Japan. It'll be cool if the dub on Toonami eventually goes past where the DVDs are now–then we'll be tuning in to Toonami to see the new dub episodes instead of just rewatching what we already saw on the DVDs.
They don't have to dub that much per year to get it finished. Why should we even worry about whether they get to the final episode at this point? There's no point.
Just saying it would be a shame for the dub to be cancelled after so many episodes. You're right, there's no point in worrying about it now. It is food for thought though. I like to think I'll someday own the whole series on DVD dubbed and subbed. Like I said; I don't think One Piece will have to be the next DBZ to stay alive in the U.S–it just needs to stay relevant and sell well enough to continue like Bleach or FullMetal Alchemist, which have stayed on Adult Swim for years. But I think it is a valid question to consider whether we'll ever get to that point--no one's being all gloom and doom about it now but we are talking about the show over the course of the next, like, ten years.
-
RE: Funi TV Discussion (Saturday Night/Sunday Morning 1:00 a.m., USA Toonami)
I am up to date. Very much so. But ever since the travesty that was the 4Kids dub, I've been very careful to avoid any kind of "English + One Piece" thing. It's made me paranoid and nervous about anything One Piece in English, to be honest.
Oh. Well, the first 205 FUNi-dubbed episodes are on Hulu now. You should look at an episode or two and check it out. You might not take to it enthusiastically if you've been watching the sub all these years, but even if the voices aren't to your liking you can be assured that 1) the script is accurate 2) it's totally uncensored and 3) the original music, names (Zoro!), and terminology are kept in tact. It might be a tad bit childish to get excited about, but there's also plenty of cursing in the dialog. lol. And since it's airing on Adult Swim it'll be uncut. I'm sure you'll still prefer the Japanese version, but trust me it's nothing like what 4K!Ds did to the show.
-
RE: Funi TV Discussion (Saturday Night/Sunday Morning 1:00 a.m., USA Toonami)
I think the character videos were done pretty well. You really can't expect too much of them. Those recaps will be eating valuable commercial time–they can't do five minute recaps for every character and story arc out there. Ultimately, it's up to the viewers if they want to try out the rest of the series. The little catch up pieces they're doing are really all one can reasonably expect.
I seriously wonder why they chose 1 minute? Unless these are going to be aired tomorrow night then I honestly can't see why they would chose such a short amount of time to recap those very long, entire-season arcs. Oh and I'm also on board for talkback threads as well.
Because they can't afford to lose out on ad revenue from commercials. I wouldn't be surprised if FUNi is even paying them for the ad space for the recaps. The longer the videos, the more $$$ someone loses out on either way, whether it's FUNi or Toonami.
It's kinda cool what they did w/ those little "catch-up" vids, but the Arlong one was the only one done with anything remotely close to "justice", and that's really only taking its length into consideration. The Alabasta and Skypiea ones felt way too short 'cause they couldn't put in enough material. If anything I think those two arcs (if they were given another catch up video) would either need an extra 30 seconds or minute just to scratch the surface. It'd be cool to see these on TV, but I do hope they get better ones that are even narrated by TOM (like the Bleach one…only longer).
Another opportunity for me to shamelessly troll my "air movie 8" idea! lol. It would catch new viewers up to speed on at least one of the story arcs and it's also an emotionally intense, action packed feature that shows just how serious the show can be.
Anyway…
-
RE: Funi TV Discussion (Saturday Night/Sunday Morning 1:00 a.m., USA Toonami)
Still, if you're posting on One Piece message boards, reading the manga, and watching the subs–it's almost impossible not to come across that information. I mean, FUNimation licensed the series 6 years ago and has since dubbed 263+ episodes. At this point, FUNimation has held the license twice as long as 4K!Ds ever did and they have dubbed more than twice as many episodes as 4K!Ds. At this point, 4K!Ds One Piece only comprises 1/3 of the show's history in the States. Not to mention the FUNi dub was on TV for months before its cancellation.
If you don't watch dubs then you may as well not know about 4K!Ds either. This is a silly thing to argue about–just saying it's pretty crazy that someone like that doesn't even have the slightest clue what happened when it's all over the Internet and it's been more than half a decade since FUNi took the helm.

RE: Funi TV Discussion (Saturday Night/Sunday Morning 1:00 a.m., USA Toonami)
It's not baffling at all. For most people in America the only exposure they ever had to "One Piece" was the 4Kids version when it was on T.V. Not everyone buys FUNimation DVDs or knows about "One Piece" FUNimation dub on Hulu and FUNimation.com
Sure, that's understandable. But if you're an English-speaking One Piece fan who's either caught up to the anime or the manga (see: Law avatar) then it is pretty baffling.
-
RE: Funi TV Discussion (Saturday Night/Sunday Morning 1:00 a.m., USA Toonami)
Personally, I'm nervous about One Piece returning to TV. Surely we all remember the last time they showed it on TV. So… many... bad memories...
Do you really not know One Piece has been in great hands for years or are you just worried it'll get cancelled again? :wassat:I don't know how someone can have a Tralfalgar Law avatar and be so up to date with One Piece and not know that.
Which goes back to why I think Toonami should advertise the 'uncut' aspect of the new broadcast, like they're doing with Naruto which was never really censored too bad anyway.
-
RE: Funimation DVD Discussion III (Please Check First Post for FAQ)
REALLY loved what Funi did with season 4, Can't wait to see S5V1 in july .
For future seasons after 5, realistically there is no way funimation can dub all of one piece. It'd be great but I don't know how plausible it is for Funi to dub 500+ soon to be 600 episodes(with no end in sight). Personally my hope for Funi's dub of OP is to atleast get to ep# 516 right before the time skip. And if they are able to go past that, Great.
What do you guys think? :ninja:
ps:Loved Franky, Paulie, Lucci, Kaku, Kokoro and Iceburg (as well as the usual suspects)
It all depends on how successful the franchise is over here. They've been dubbing Dragon Ball and putting out new DVDs for over a decade. So far, it seems One Piece has been doing just well enough to get by. I think FUNimation is determined to keep One Piece alive in the U.S for as long as they possibly can.
That's why its success on Toonami is so important. The show's current fan base probably won't sustain the series for another ten years in the U.S–it needs more viewers. But it doesn't need to rake in the success that Naruto or Dragon Ball has. If One Piece can just stay on TV--and continue to be relevant, like Bleach for example, then FUNi can continue to dub it. One Piece has stayed in the U.S Shonen Jump since 2003 and FUNi's been dishing out the DVDs for 5 years so they must be doing something right. Bleach is a long-running series that doesn't get crazy ratings over here but it's still relevant enough that VIZ keeps dubbing new episodes. Adult Swim's been airing the same FullMetal Alchemist episodes the last ten years, and whenever new stuff comes out (ie; Brotherhood) FUNi dubs it.
So One Piece won't need massive success to survive the long haul in the U.S--it just needs to not fall into obscurity. Toonami's resurgence may be the best thing that's ever happened to the show. The way Adult Swim's anime block has been rebranded has made it the perfect avenue for One Piece whereas before no one ever thought a show like OP would make sense on it.
While I might not blindly believe FUNi will still be dubbing the last episodes of One Piece ten years from now, it is possible that they will and I'll continue to be cautiously optimistic.
-
RE: Funi TV Discussion (Saturday Night/Sunday Morning 1:00 a.m., USA Toonami)
Yeah, thing is viewers will have to deal with a couple months of unbearably silly episodes to get to the cool, sad, or bad ass episodes. The Davy Back arc probably won't change anyone's opinion of One Piece, except for the show being uncut and all compared to before. That's why I think it'd be a good idea to show movie 8 first since it's an emotionally intense, action packed feature that shows just how awesome and serious the series can be–plus it catches up new viewers on at least one of the story arcs they've never seen while showing some flashes of the Water 7/Enies Lobby story elements to come. :ninja:
Hopefully new viewers will be patient enough. Toonami should really advertise the 'uncut' aspect of the new broadcast too. They do with Naruto–they even say "Naruto Uncut is coming on next" as opposed to just "Next is Naruto" or whatever. Uncut Naruto isn't even a huge deal since the DVDs have been out for years and even the censored Toonami version that aired years ago was practically untouched. One Piece on the other hand has never aired on TV even remotely uncensored, or with the original names and terminology, or anything. Even the FUNi version on TV kept 4K!Disms and they still censored it more than they should have to play it safe. It's not a huge deal or anything, but it'd be smart to market One Piece the same way they're doing Naruto to really get the point across that this is not the same crap that aired on TV all those years ago.

Ain't that how the cool kids are saying it now in days?

RE: Funimation DVD Discussion III (Please Check First Post for FAQ)
Yeah it's a real shame. I was one of those people saying to just leave in the Japanese OP/EDs back when they first started dubbing, but now that they've went and dubbed all these songs (some of which I liked a lot) it really sucks from a consistency standpoint. (guess they should have just used Japanese from the beginning) They even went and dubbed the movie 8 ED when they re-released it on Blu-Ray–going out of their way to make it fit in with all their other stuff and now that's all for naught. And then if they start dubbing them again in the future it will be even more awkward, so I dunno. I have been wanting to hear a couple of the upcoming OP's dubbed though.

They're talking about the fate of future Kai OP/ED's because whether or not they're dubbed may set a precedent for not only One Piece but also for dub songs for all FUNi's future products, or at least as far as Toei series are concerned.

RE: The Viz Media Thread
That would be a bad idea, because people wouldn't bother getting into One Piece if they had to pay for each volume. I know i personally wouldn't have but now that I have read and watched all of One Piece online I actually try buying the volumes now but if i never got into One Piece with illegal apps then i wouldn't have brought volumes.
It's hard to explain but the free manga viewing is what gets people into the series, then thats when they start supporting it and buying volumes because they like it so much.
I don't mean that they should embark on a relentless crusade to rid of all online-manga. Truth is, no matter how hard they try, they won't be able to stop it anyway. Let's be real, most of us here got into One Piece with fansubs and scanslations.
But the mobile manga-apps? All they have to do is ask Apple and Google to remove them from their stores, and Apple is especially compliant with removing illegal apps. Reading manga (for free) on your tablet is really a luxury. When we first got into One Piece there wasn't even such a thing as an iPad. They don't have to take all free manga off the Internet, but at least make the pirates read it on their PC's, while making them pay for the luxury of reading it on their iPads/Androids.
The scanlation sites make buying SJ Alpha sound like a dumb idea. But the free manga apps on iOS and Android make it a really dumb idea. I bought Alpha myself because I like the translations and wanted to finally show the industry some support, but I could just as easily read the chapters with MangaReader on iOS for free without paying a cent–and most potential customers are just gonna do that.

This isn't even worth responding to, but seriously. I've been posting with this font for half a decade before you even got an account here.

^To me it seemed like the faces that appeared in the speech bubbles were to help the reader while the masks were to help the characters in-universe.
