Y'know, I understand that sand powers should probably function in relatively similar ways, and I'm usually one who isn't bothered by elements that are similar from one manga to the other, but this reeked of the same strategy of the Crocodile fight. Water hardening sand? Check. Sandstorm? Check. Draining moisture from the body with his touch? Check. Holding Erza EXACTLY like Croc held Luffy after round two? Check. Not to mention his personality being one to want to put FT in their place as "below him"? Jeez. Add to that what we've seen from this guy already, and it's hard not to just see him as a Croc knock off… (A Crocoff?)

That being said, I liked how Erza needed someone else to help her win this. I thought that was actually a nice payoff. Otherwise, I feel like I just reread Alabasta in a single chapter.

I've loved this series forever, and although I do like the original soundtrack and even the original voice actors, there's too much nostalgia for me not to like the dub version better. I know that sounds weird, but the DBZ dub is the one dub I still watch every now and then. Yes some of the lines were cheesy and there were plenty of times they could've worded the script more accurately to the actual translation, but quite honestly, they did a pretty darn good job with packaging this material to us as kids considering how heavy some of the the series is. Granted it's the butt of every anime joke made nowadays and it does have flaws. Some scenes for me just flow better in the dub than the original. Goku's Instant Transmission Kamehameha to me is the perfect example - I can watch the sub and still think its cool, but the dub adds so much more tension and just explosion to that scene. Sean Schemmel was perfect in that one moment. Cell's reaction was perfect. The music was perfect. I get chills every time I watch it. On the other hand, I found some of the serious discussions and comedic moments more enjoyable in the original version. There's a genuine flow to conversations that is missing in the dub. Maybe what I disliked about the sub was more about the shortness of some battle cries or phrases. I wanted the emphasis to last. I enjoyed the pageantry of it, and that's part of the reason why I go back to the dubs. Now if only I could splice the two aspects together…....

Obviously this is all personal opinion, and I don't want to step on anyone's toes about this. Just thought I'd add my views on this stuff.

I appreciate the number of people who also ship ZoroxRobin, but the spam is definitely annoying. I also ship SanjixNami, but I've never understood why people ship Luffy with anybody. He just comes across as too aloof or asexual for a serious pairing. Idk, maybe it's just me.

Just gonna throw my two cents in, not sure if people care, but whatever.

Animation fluidity is really important to me because stilted movements annoy me more than anything else. It slows down fights in general because the characters don't seem to have a natural flow about their actions. That being said, when the art is THAT bad, then I take offense to it slightly. There are some instances though where I think the face faults look better than the original drawings….. okay just kidding but still. I appreciate animation, but in this case, I'll side with the majority when judging the Pain fight.

What I love about One Piece is that it isn't strict power levels. Some abilities do better against others, and some overpowered abilities are given to people who don't abuse them. Mr. 3 stood a better change against Magellan than Luffy because of his fruit. Was he stronger than Luffy or Magellan? No, however his ability gave him a better shot at survival.

On the topic of Kizaru, remember during the war when he sniped the key to Ace's cuffs? That could have been Luffy or Ace's head. Kizaru is "gray-area justice". If it was Akainu, he would have sniped both of them in the head. If it was Aokiji, probably a shot at the platform to simply knock Luffy off of it. However Kizaru took that middle chance, he shot at the key, leaving Ace still stuck, Luffy still having a chance, and Sengoku having the opportunity to kill them.

Does Kizaru have an overpowered ability? Hell yes. Is he at the very top tier as far as characters go? Not at the very top because it's not in his personality.

Can I just say that I love this explanation? Seriously, this is how I felt about that situation too!

Oh you mean the poneglyphs he read, but being the dumb pirate he is and not an oharan archeologist he was unable to understand them and came to whatever conclusion they did.

Dumb pirate or not, Roger used the language - Skypeia? - he had to have some way of deciphering them. I think you're undermining Roger a bit here, but that's just my opinion. He was the KING for a reason. He was capable of many feats, otherwise he wouldn't have conquered the Grand Line.

Oh and what did they do with their conclusion? They retired from pirating and did NOTHING. They didn't tell anyone else about what they discovered, they didn't fight any war to do whatever.

You're completely right, and I believe this is where Luffy surpasses Roger in his whole theme. Luffy is all about being free and helping people, unlike Roger who was hellbent on conquering the sea. Either way, this denotes a personality difference and does not in one way or another make it more or less plausible that Roger was able to read/comprehend a voice from the poneglyphs. Has it ever occurred to you that Roger's illness may have been a cause for the lack of action? Or maybe there were extenuating circumstances that prevented them from acting? Either way, we don't know the whole story. But we do know Roger could comprehend poneglyphs. Somehow. And the closest connection we have is Rayleigh's personal statement that they could hear the "voice of all things." This seems to be what Luffy has "inherited" so to speak.

Regardless of how much this whole inheritance thing seems to suck for y'all, ultimately Luffy's actions have drawn a direct contrast to those of Roger's. Just because he's following the same path, it doesn't mean he's doing the EXACT same things. It seems to me, he's inheriting the same things as Roger, and for better or worse, helps people and lives freely along the way instead of conquering the sea like Roger did. He's almost reversing the damage Roger may or may not have done to the world with this whole Era of Pirating thing. And he's doing it along the same path as Roger, showing not only a parallel, but also a better method of reaching the same goal - The End of the Grand Line.

WHY DID ROGER HAVE TO HAVE IT ALSO?

Because Roger didn't have a way to read poneglyphs besides this method. Raleigh basically said under no uncertain terms that the only reason they know the history of the void century was because they could here the "voice of all things" - thus Roger needed to have it as well. It was a necessity.

Not saying for sure that the void century/rio poneglyph is One Piece, but it seems to me the two are definitely connected somehow.

And yet, Skypeia was probably my all time favorite arc xD Just because of how fleshed out everything is, and how vibrant of a world Sky Island was.

Gyojin Island has been awesome, but I wish Oda spent more time exploring and explaining things first, before the fights started. To an extent tho, Saobondy arc was the introduction, because the bubbles and whatnot were explained back then, so it lost a bit of its WOW factor.

Is that a Japanese standard? I'm curious cuz where I live, the standard is that hell is hot only.

I used to think hell was only hot too, until I read Dante obviously. You're probably right in that its not a Japanese standard per se - its still pretty fresh in my mind since I read Dante for class two years ago, so thats where I jumped first xP It is a piece of fiction (hopefully :ninja:) but I think this is where the interpretation stemmed from.

Brook's closer to the "lower" parts of hell than Sanji who is, while demonic at times, not deceased.

LOVED everything - standard reaction to a lot of chapters lately, but this one more so than others

Brooke's was FUCKING EPIC - Blood freezing?? Are you serious?? THATS AWESOME
Usopp's was EPIC - Wolf had a BADASS design to it - loved how it really was 3 moves!
Franky's was FUCKING EPIC - Winner of best new attack, right here
Chopper's was EPIC - Kinda basic, but still awesome considering he mastered monster point
Jimbei's was FUCKING EPIC - Just pure awesomeness
Sanji's was FUCKING EPIC - His reaction was priceless XD
Zoro's was AWESOME - left a little to be desired, but I suppose thats only because it was similar to a basic Onigiri - still shows how strong he is now - and I loved the Mihawk line reference!

Zoro looking badass is all I need to be happy with a chapter, but this delivered on so many other levels, its ridiculous XD

I realize that it might be kinda disappointing that Luffy didn't grow for you guys, but it was pretty disappointing for me too, when I didn't grow AT ALL any between the ages of 17 and 19. Does this have any correlation to the argument? Perhaps, but all I'm saying is that a slight change between those ages is somewhat grounded in reality.

Also, this isn't like the SEVEN year timeskip in DBZ where there was a much more noticeable difference IMO. This is only two years. Not very much happens in two years that involves physical changes besides scars - i.e. the GIANT scar on Luffy's chest.

The fact that it has to end

After trying to think of something that has TRULY disappointed me in a series which I have worshipped for 10 years, I think that this sums it up nicely. I think of what Im gonna be like when that final chapter comes out, and all I see is emptiness. Cause nothing comes close to this in terms of thoughtful and eventful storytelling.

Honestly, I wouldn't change any aspect of it so far. Deaths were timely, tragic, and effective. Power-ups made some amount of sense in the long run, and were devastatingly awesome. The time skip felt necessary to move the plot and make sense. Every character that has been hyped in some way or another has been awesome. The only real issue I have is with the anime, and obviously since this is a manga thread, I don't have to discuss my issues with that xP

Maybe the one thing that disappoints me the most besides the fact that it has to end is that it's not real XD I want to live it, call me crazy. It'd be epic.

I know, I'm one of those "join up and type" kind of people that attempt to do stuff you guys are pros at. I hope this time it works.

      @Ryuksgelus

The hits thing was meant to show that basically the SH could take down a Kuma with a few hard hits and lucky shots. So, while the othe SN try to attack their own Kuma, they still need hits from everyone. Both Urouge and Drake attacked the Kuma, but it never really slowed down. I'm sure Drake probably had an idea of a weak point to the bot, but the reason why he didn't use a plan is kind of odd. But the inital idea was to show that the relative number of attacks between the SH and the SN (Guestimating 14:11) show that the SH were able to take down a Kuma much faster.

That being said, Kizaru took some of the attention as well, but he didn't do anything really to drake or Urouge, until he knocked them out, so….:getlost:

I guess imo the SH are doing much better than some people are giving them credit for. And the last few attacks we've seen have been nothing short of jaw-dropping.😁

      @Ryuksgelus:

"Thats a pretty big consistencty mistake to have the Monster Trio knock a guy through wall, draw him all beat up with his shirt torn, and then at the beginning of the next chapter have him completely fine only to have him end up torn again."

Maybe this is just my opinion, but I all I see that is wrong with Kuma in that picture is that he is laying back through a wall, with a little tear on his shirt. There is not blood or bruises or anything on Kuma's face. So a tear in the shirt, or a missing sandal is basically on the same level. Maybe you can point out to me whether or not there are any battle scars that I am missing.

      @Ryuksgelus:

I interpreted the Kuma fights had the monster trio taking down one, the other SH then took on the other one to buy the Trio time to recover take down the 3rd one. One Kuma bot being able to sustain 2 major attacks from each member of the mosnter Trio on top of the damage the other SH did to him seems like absurdly high durability, and makes the SH look very weak compared to the other rookies. Seemed either Urouge or Drake(likely the other two as well) could have solo'ed the Pacifista if Kizaru wasn't there. 2 on 1 and it would have been torn apart.

Maybe this is just me agaiin, but when I look at the start of your "supposed second battle" It looks like the Kuma on page 9 is recovering from a serious attack and is walking out from the rubble of a building. This would prove that there is only one Kuma. But, as I know it will come to pass, it is hard to tell what it is the background.

      @Ryuksgelus:

Because he was referring to Kuma-bots using lasers, not the number of enemies using Kuma's face. If I say "oh this guys attacked me with a sword as well", that doesn't automatically mean only one other person attacked me with a sword before.

How does this make sense? I said he refers that there are 2 after their COMBO ATTACK and later he claims there are three. Don't just go boldinig other peoples quotes and manipulating them to your own advantage, read all of it.

      @Ryuksgelus:

Agreed. However the SH having to exert themselves so much against just 1 Kuma bot actually makes it seem the SN are much stronger than the Monster Trio, which does't seem right at all.

OK, the Kuma with the supernovas took how many hits? Probably several from uruouge and 1 from Drake in Cap 508. In Chap 509 3 hits from Urouge, 1 block and 1 bite from Drake. Whereas the SH's Kumas (or Kumas) took a Coup de Vent, 1 combo from 3 people, 1 from chopper, 4 from Franky, 1 from Brooke, 1 to the mouth from Ussop, his own laser (Robin), 1 from Nami, and then a 3 way combo from Sanji Zoro and Luffy. For all intents and purposes, Sanji, Zoro, and Luffy did the most damage and therefore dispatched a Kuma with a total of 6 extremely hard hits. (The only ones that affected them were
the Coup de Vent, the combo, the own laser attack, and then the last three)
So really, this shows how much stronger the SH are from the rest, if they're able to defeat the Kuma with only that many huge attacks. Putting it your point of view that means they dispatched 2 Kumas with of 6 huge hits. Don't you think that's a little too small….

One more thing for the sake of argument, why wouldn't Sanji also examine the other Kuma if there were too, and why didn't Sentoumaru notice that there were two bad Kuma-bots, the only answer to that is that there is only one Kuma Bot.

I'm only trying to make a friendly argument here.

"Why would Sanji count the real one from TB when in the very same speach bubble he is talking about another using Lasers instead of the Paw Paw ability?

Can you explain why the Pacifista goes from severely damaged in 509 from the Monster Trio's combination attack to perfect condition in 510?"

Yeah, I'll explain it, Oda made what is commonly referred to in reality as a CONSISTENCY MISTAKE. He does it all the time. Look the Grand Line website's "To Err is ODA" section and you can see a pantheon of inconsistencies.

Also, on the very same page in Chapter 509, Sanji mention there are TWO that strong just after they did their combo attack. He was counting original Kuma there, so why would he not count the original Kuma later when he says there were three? "(Sanji) This guys firing beams from his hands instead of paws AS WELL." This means they only destroyed one. Therefore- Oda = minor mistake.

As for the exhaustedness, I think it goes two ways.
      1. People don't give enough credit to the other supernovas. Just because they have lesser bounties doesn't make them weaker. They could have been laying relatively low as compared to Luffy kicking some royal ass a Enies Lobby or even Kidd killing a lot of innocent people. Urouge is probably just as strong as Luffy is, but he doesn't have the same "I'm going to kick your ass" mentality that other crews have (i.e. SH).

      2. If you were shot in the shoulder by a beam, I'd say you're in deep shit. But although Drake and Urouge both looked fairly battle ready, how many hits had that Kuma taken? You forget the SH had to use their strongest individual moves and their strongest combo moves to take that Kuma-bot down. So of course their fuckin tired. They used alot of energy. The others had not really even begun to fight the Kuma bot. They threw a few hits on him, but nowhere near the level of SH's attacks. You aren't comparing apples to apples. Besides, Urouge should be tired because h fought Kuma-bot individually. Just because he smiles alot doesn't mean he's still prime.

Phew. Analyze at your own digression.

    • RE: General Thoughts on the One Piece Movies

I've thoroughly enjoyed most of the movies, but a few have been less than good. Here's my take:

Movie 1: This was the first One Piece thing I ever watched, and because its animation style was literally DBZ like in some sections, I was hooked on the series. That being said, story wasn't really there for me most of the time. 7 out of 10

Movie 2: 3rd best movie out of the bunch. Every crewmember including Usopp got his own chance to showcase their skills. The Zoro and Sanji fights were especially sick! Story was also interesting but somewhat predictable. 9 out of 10

Movie 3: Kind of strange story but the fights were good, especially Zoro and Sanjis (movies seem to like these guys😁). I liked the focus on Chopper, but no Vivi kind of disappointed me. 6 out of 10

Movie 4: 2nd best movie and probably has the most rewatchability for me. The Gasparde fight was VERY similar to crocodile was still enjoyable for a lot of the extra ideas it used. The race idea was great, but I wish they had played that idea up a little bit more. 9.5 out of 10😁

Movie 5: Boring as shit except for the end fight and a little past between Saga and Zoro. I had high hopes for a Zoro related movie and I feel really let down. 5 out of 10😊

Movie 6: @iMustang - youre thinking of the ART is bad, not the animation. The animation is how the characters in the actual movie flow and move. So yes the animation was INCREDIBLE. The art SUCKED. :getlost:But, I find this animation much impressive due to its expressiveness. (Is it just me or is apforums the only people in the One Piece community that doesn't like this art style. I've seen more haters for this art style than the shitty animation we normally get for episodes.)

Anyway, Movie 6 is easily the best out of all of the movies, animation aside, it a very welcome change to the happy go lucky crew we have all been used to. The story was there in spades, and most of the time, it felt like a much more darker, demented version of the Davy Back Fight. The slow annihilation of the crew was also intense and it made keep watching to see what was going to happen. I think the Baron is the only person Luffy's killed. Therefore this movie peaked my interest. 10 out of 10:wub:

Movie 7: BOOBS!!!!! :blink:The story was great, but the action was far too short and could have been left out for just a mystery. Gear Second was nice to see in this movie though. 6 out of 10

Movie 8: SUCKED!!!!! :getlost:The only way I watch this movie is by watching the Funimation dub which was Fucking INCREDIBLE!!!
Japanese: 3 out of 10 Funimation: 7 out of 10

Movie 9: Absolutely amazing style of art. Story, although a retelling, was very cool and the inclusion of Franky and Robin and Mushul was far too awesome. Geaer Second blew my mind at the end. Gear Three felt weak.
      8 out of 10

      Movie 10: CAN'T WAIT!!!!!!

When I mean animation, I mean how the characters move in the episode.
In this show, zoro and ryuuma did not look fluid at all. It could see each frame one after another. Then again, I may be too critical. A few years ago, I could see the difference between one episode and another, but after spending some time over at the KF forums, the differences in animation just popped out. The difference between ep. 298, 300, 304, and 309 were enough.

I saw the movie 9 RAW, and although the art was questionable the fluidity and pace was perfect for a fight like this. As a side note, Zoro's Hiryu Kaen final blow in the ep was animated by the same people that made Movie 9.

Edit: I was extremely happy that the fight only lasted half of the episode

Toei never ceases to amaze me how horribly they handle Zoro's fights. The fist clash was amazing, then the quality just fell while they were still in the tower. I imagined that the blows were coming alot faster than normal. The manga just had more of an intense feeling to it.

That being said, Toei's ability to show incredible finishing moves is increible. His last attack was done perfectly, with the right style and right animation. Now if only the rest of the fight looked like that…..

    • RE: Will you buy the Funimation One Piece Season 1 box set?

You know, the one thing that worries me is how they will handle Skypeia when they get to it. Hear me out here, but I think it may be another DBZ case where they were doing an absolutely amazing job redoing all of the Saiyan and Namek sagas, but got lazy and just reinput their old dub job for the rest of the series. (i.e. Frieza and beyond). I just hope they don't do the same with One Piece because the dub they have started is absolutely fantastic, and the entire series deserves the same treatment as the first thirteen episodes.

Buuhan, I completely agree with you.
Oda's art almost seems a little less refined than it used to in the better chapeters of Thriller Bark. Its almost been a little disappointing recently.

The more that this arc unfolds, it seems more closely related to that of the Jaya arc before Skypeia. The only difference of course is that we are going underwater instead of into the air.

Once again, Luffy is in the presence of incredibly storng "rookies" who will inevitably try to take him on in a battle. (like Bellamy before)
Once again, The mugiwara ship is undergoing a transformation of sorts to go to the next island.(i.e. Chicken Merry)

I am in no way shape or form criticizing this arc, as I loved every moment of the Jaya/Skypeia arcs. In fact these similarities actually make the arc filled with anticipation for another incredibly ingenious arc from Oda in Merman Island.

As of right now, I hope we'll see another incredible OHKO out of luffy to another asshole like Bellamy (i.e. KID). It may seem a little underwhelming, but even though I only know so much about this guy, Kid seems like he clearly deserves it.

Another idea for a matchup - Zoro/Law seems like a great combo. They both share several features, and Zoro, if they only meet up may run into a potential rival on the archipelago. Either this guy or Killer would be a great matchup for Zoro.

I thought the only Poneglyphs found were the one with Roger, (pretty interesting) and the other "WMD." maybe I just couldn't remember which history you're talking about.

Plus, this was ment to be after Raftel, so if there was a chance they could go back through, I'm sure they would.

    • Was Skypeia more than just for show?

I was thinking about a way for One Piece to end lately, and I came with a theory. This is probably just mindless to a lot of other people, but the one way that I can think of Luffy and the others actually staying alive after their excursion through the Grand Line is actually by revisiting Sky Island. Since almost no one has ever actually made it up into the clouds, They would almost literally be safe up there away from the marines and old adversaries.

      I know, boring right? 😴

But when you think about it, there has been a major reason for every arc so far, except for the Skypeia arc. I felt this would be the only way it could still play a major impact on the rest of the story.

AGAIN: THIS IS JUST AN IDEA (i don't want to get flamed for a frickin' idea😄)
