People who believe that this series is first and foremost a goofy comic with no room for serious moments really need to have another reread. Remember how Luffy laughed his ass off after he found out how Crocodile had been messing with Toto? Or Bellamy with Cricket? Or the Franky Family with Usopp? Or when Charlos shot Hachi? Or when the Boa sisters threatened to destroy Marguerite and her friends? Or when he met Blackbeard in Impel Down? Do I need to go on?

Chapters 1089 – 1099, ending with Vegapunk and Kuma agreeing on the name "Pacifista", with either "Pacifist" or "Kumachi" as the volume title. On the cover we'll get the Egghead crew of the past, i.e. big headed Vegapunk, Kuma, Bonney, Sentomaru, Borsalino, and Saturn being ominous in the background. Maybe throw Ginny, Ivankov and Dragon somewhere in there as well.

Editors might nudge Oda to give certain characters more screentime, but putting "I'm gonna join!" into their mouths over and over again?
Also lol at "Oda likes to keep readers guessing". Zoro, Usopp and Sanji were pretty straightforward but they don't count since they were very early on, right? Just look at Nami, I'm sure there was a lot of guessing if she was really gonna leave! ... Right!? Then Chopper... also straightforward, but also early, so doesn't count! There was a lot of guessing with Rob– nope, her joining was a surprise to everyone. But we readers were meant to guess in Water 7 with all the shipwrights, and especially Franky vs. Paulie! Just remember the discussions! ... Aaand then Franky got the flashback and the colorspread and wasn't delegated to the arc-specific ally fodder group. Now, Brook joining was debatable for sure! ... If you ignore the fact that he was asked to join within the very same chapter of his first appearance, a quirky skeleton and being the musician that Luffy has been looking for. But we can't have another swordsman! What, he's the one Laboon has been waiting for?! Fine. Jimbei though, I'll give you that one, just don't look at Brennen's well-thought out theory on why Jimbei's was being set up as the next crewmate.
So all in all, I think we see that yes, Oda likes to be unpredictable on who's going to join next. If you ignore all the outliers that make up the majority of the crew.
Never change, Nakama thread. Never change.

Jesus christ, a show can actually just be bad without it being internet trolls trying to sabotage it.
This narrative is just so weird to me.
@Shiebs Have you read the reviews? or did you just look at the score? She-hulk is a very boring show. Its a law-centric comedy but none of the comedy works. None of the jokes land. The main character is extremely thin and has no depth.
As far as I watched it, it seems the whole thing is centered arond how a character that looks like Tatiana fucking Maslany is somehow unattractive and no one likes her. Also some weird dating stuff. This wouldn't be a problem if the other characters were funny or fleshed out even a little but they are not. All of them are boring, one dimensional and interchangeable.
As a comedy show it fails. As a superhero show it fails.
And none of this, absolutely none of this, is centered on the fact that its a show run by women.
anyway, all in all. I say absolutely FUCK OFF to the convenient excuse that only incels and trolls don't like a show.

Which, to start with, completely ignores that the marines came to Amazon Island to target Hancock with Seraphim in tow, and accomplished nothing except losing Koby...
When an Emperor and the Pirate King's first mate unexpectedly join the fray I don't blame them for being quickly overwhelmed and outmatched.
which ignores acess.timecos point. He argues they didn't accomplish their goal, you say "that wasn't their goal", and then don't establish what their goal is supposed to be or what if anything they accomplished.
They argued that the Seraphim could've just laid waste to Amazon Lily and/or subjugate the island before Blackbeard's arrival to establish hype, which is why I'm pointing out that the Marines never intended wanton destruction or to fight them if it can be avoided. Also, the Marines came to Amazon Lily to apprehend Hancock, I genuinely thought that was obvious.
Then you whoelsale dismiss Acess.timecos actual reasonings given as disengenous
I don't wholesale dismiss the reasonings. I give concrete evidence why those reasonings aren't good arguments for why the Seraphim would be significantly weaker than their originals: The latter have never shown anything beyond the very same level of accomplishments. So why is it seen as a detriment to the Seraphim?
which is not helped by needlessly mocking remarks such as "And are those Hawks in the room right now, or do you only hear their voices?" or "If we're making up explanations", and more. Your entire tone comes off as mocking, absolutely not helped by the "Cry laughing" emoji you added to acess.timecos earlier post.
When that's the attitude you bring, he has ample reason to not consider discourse with you worth his time. And like, not even 10 years ago I would maybe write my counterpoints in a similar snide "what are you thinking? lol" way which is fun and empowering to write, but also makes you look bad to the people on the other end and actively hurts your chances at engaging in good-faith discourse with them...assuming thats what you want.
I admit I do like to add some snark into my posts, and if anyone decides to not engage with me because their feelings can't handle separating snark from arguments, then that's their prerogative. That still doesn't change the fact that my posts aren't just a string of random insults designed to get a kick out of being mean. But again, people are free to see it that way.

Stephen isn't infallible, but always leave it to hobby/Google translators to have the absolute confidence to know better than paid professionals.
Borsalino ordering any Battleship to Egghead doesn't mean that all ships that are coming will be of that class. Just as they were heading to Egghead for an operation, even before Luffy teamed up with Vegapunk, other non-Battleships were likely as well.
Having a ship of a certain size doesn't mean it will be manned to its upmost capacity.
If someone tells you that there's a group of over 100 people coming to a place, do you expect them all to be the same height, or does it need to be specified that there will be both tall and short people?
And maybe you should bother to read the official version before claiming that something was or was not said. But that's just my common sense talking. What does it know.

RE: Next Straw Hat Crewmates (Vol. 9 - Yamato vs. The World)
The thing with Oda teasing an interaction between Yamato and the Straw Hats is that it's bordering the same "It's been suspiciously hinted at and will totally happen soon, guys!" argument that's been brought up for other candidates and which has always bothered me in their cases. I'd like to be careful to use the same rhetoric even though it's hard to ignore the confirmation bias that it actually does seem very deliberate
Regarding Yamato's bluntness: It's hard for any new candidate to follow Robin, Franky and Jimbei who have all been outliers in their own distinctive ways, but don't forget that Brook was pretty much as obvious and in your face from his very first appearance and whose proper flashback also came after the climax. Granted, Brook actually has interactions with Straw Hats in his favor that Yamato doesn't

Sure, that's a great explanation. But wherever the WG added the name Gum Gum to replace the Hito Hito Nika, they did not do it in the Encyclopedias, because in this chapter Vegapunk says that the Gum Gum is not in any Fruit Book that existed (I'm not saying that the Hito Hito model Nika was).I think Stephen's translation might be a bit misleading in that regard. He writes "Even in the oldest books of Devil Fruits there is no such thing as a Gum-Gum Fruit", implying that it also doesn't exist in contemporary encyclopedias. However in the original Vegapunk says "”ゴムゴムの実”なんてものは...! 古い「悪魔の実図鑑」には載っておらんのじゃ" where such an implication doesn't seem to appear, from what I can tell with my rudimentary knowledge of Japanese (roughly "Gum-Gum Fruit, what is that? It doesn't appear in old Devil Fruit reference books"). TCB and redon also phrased it differently from Stephen, saying that the Gum-Gum Fruit was never listed in the old/ancient Devil Fruit encyclopedia with no implication on modern day versions.
Maybe someone with better Japanese can chime in

@Coookie Do we know what word was used then? Because without any specifics, all we can do is speculate on what he meant.
I think it’d be odd for him to say people will join the strawhats one after another, just for those characters to not actually be strawhats in a strict sense.
The original interview with a translation can be found here, the relevant part is at the end of the third paragraph. The Straw Hats also weren't mentioned by name in the Japanese translation but the "pirate crew", I'm not gonna even attempt to decipher the original Chinese with online translators.
Just keep in mind that things can get lost in translation since Oda probably didn't answer in Chinese in the first place. So we have a Japanese sentence translated to Chinese, translated back into Japanese or English. As you said it's all speculation since we don't know what Oda said exactly, but after eight years since the interview happened, the only thing so far that matches the vibe of the statement is the Grand Fleet that conveniently was created only a year later.

No "hindsight" needed. Go back and plenty of us were there week 1 with Brook. (well, week 2 technically I guess is when we got the yohoho and musician part.) Oda put a neon flashing sign.
Maybe we didn'tlike him because he made a horrible first impression, but lots of us never had any doubt in the matter.
I do not understand how people did. I see reasons put out there and none of them felt very strong, even at the time. The narrative was just… super obvious about the fact he was the next character.
Robin aside, queen of exceptions that she is, Oda generally doesn't play sneaky when it comes to making the next crewmember.
Hindsight is needed to confirm who was right. Plenty of people were with Paulie in the first weeks. That's also where Oda did play sneaky when it comes to the next crewmate, at least for a while. This is just outcome bias.

RE: Notions That Don't Deserve Their Own Threads
What you're also forgetting is that Seraphim are insanely expensive and require a lot of testing. Even after disregarding the time it takes for one to fully develop, other resources are still limited so Vegapunk can't just mass-produce them like regular Pacifista. The Seraphim strike me more as the "quality over quantity" type.
Bonney's powers are also still temporary on living beings by her own words, so if Oda ages up the Seraphim for this arc only and assuming that they'll stick around for the final war, they'll essentially be nerfed at that point because they'll be short of their full potential. Unless of course Oda introduces some other method to permanently age them up again. -

Look at our first contact with these kids. If Oda wanted to impress us, he could easily have S-Hawk or Snake (not "and") completely take Amazon Lily down by him/herself with the exception of Hancock, before Teach arrived. Powerscaling-wise there might nothing impressive in defeating the amazons at this point, but it would still be visually striking the image of a kid alone subjugating an entire country of amazon warriors (while still not hurting Hancock's image by showing her holding her ground). That would instantly convey the idea that "damn, this kid is a beast".
The Marines' goal wasn't to take down Amazon Lily. They explicitly said that they don't want to fight Hancock or the Kuja Pirates. Also, I'm getting "I wasn't impressed so Oda didn't try to impress anyone" vibes
But instead, he decided out first contact with the Seraphim would be two of them attacking the island to the impressive result of... nothing. The only lasting damage they caused was a broken rock.
I imagine you reacting to Mihawk's first reveal in the vein of "Why are you so impressed? All he's done is chop some wood" He must be super weak then because he's never actually dealt any significant damage besides slicing up a surrendering East Blue rookie, that ship and some ice. What has Hancock ever done aside from using her hax powers that S-Snake also has?
A debut with nothing particularly remarkable, with them being quickly brushed aside halfway through so we could focus on the more relevant people present (which, ironically, included an actual Warlord).
You mean besides being Lunarian kid versions of people with whom we're very familiar and leaving Blackbeard flabbergasted? Not counting the fact that Oda obviously planned to focus more on the Seraphim in the coming chapters, so no need to let them hog the panels at that point.
Meanwhile the OG Mihawk was given a bounty on par with the Emperors.
What a chump he was in the 1009 chapters between his debut and his first on-screen bounty. Wait, what would the alternative even be for the Seraphim? It's not like they'd be getting bounties, especially not so shortly after their creation if we're using Cross Guild's bounties as a substitute.
Just compare the kind of hype Oda tried to create for each Hawk, almost simultaneously.
And are those Hawks in the room right now, or do you only hear their voices? Because I have no idea what Hawks you're talking about.
Or the fact that the combined attack of the 4 Seraphim was not enough to even take out all the nameless CP0 grunts, with many of them coming out completely unharmed, not to mention Kaku and Stussy - can you imagine the same if Mihawk, Kuma, Hancock and Jinbe attacked that group together, even for just a few minutes? - Oda could easily have shown all the grunts were taken out, but nah.
If we're making up explanations, the remaining CP0 agents are the ones S-Snake froze and unfroze when they regained authority. And what would the OG four have done differently? Jimbei doesn't have AoE attacks, Hancock would probably have done the same as S-Snake, S-Bear used Ursa Shock which I don't imagine Kuma doing any differently, and S-Hawk can hardly unleash island wide slashes willy-nilly.
I think it's pretty obvious that, yes, Oda wants us to think these kids are powerful, but he is definitely not trying to woe us to the point we are supposed to be hyped. We know they are strong mostly because other characters keep saying it, not because Oda is making an effort to impress us.
Who would be impressed by Lunarian x Pacifista x child clones of the four undefeated (well, until Blackbeard came to Amazon Lily) Warlords crossovers who retain seemingly all of their abilities in addition to lasers and Lunarian durability
So unless there is some sort of "they are only using 20% of their strength" reveal, I can't see how these 4 kids alone are meant to be perceived as worthy the same as the 7 Warlords (a group Oda keeps hyping even now).
I would find easier to believe the Warlord clones are just the tip of the iceberg and SURPRISE "meet S-White, S-Pink, S-Azure and S-Gold".Headcanons are a strong drug, I'm aware.

Oda has to do something to get readers back into the nakama conversation and it needs to be something that can't be easily hand-waved away. Oda hasn't made any movements on that front (more like the opposite) so I think it's a safe bet we're not getting anyone in this arc. Officially, unofficially, however you want to spin it.
I think the people who have left the nakama conversation have made up their minds at this point. If the point about us being in the final saga has led them to believe that it's objectively impossible for Luffy to get a 10th person, then that's ok. They can think what they want, just as we're free to think and discuss otherwise without issue. I know it's Oda who has the final say at the end of the day anyway, so until he passes away, ends the manga, or comes out and bluntly tells everyone there objectively won't be any more crewmates after Jinbe, then I'm inclined to think otherwise for now.
I'm not talking about changing people's minds. People are going to believe what they want to believe until the story tells them otherwise. Even then they still might continue to believe it.
I'm talking about getting people to care about new crewmates again. Not every person who has stop coming to this thread believes Jinbe is the last one. There are people who don't want to engage in the conversation for whatever reason or simply don't care anymore. It's very obvious that Wano killed this conversation. Was it Oda's intention do that or was it an unforeseen mistake due to last minute changes?
So how do you fix that? Do you add someone out of the blue? No, you have to build up that excitement again and right now Oda hasn't done anything to win people back. I'm not saying there isn't any time left for that to happen. What I'm saying is something needs to happen. Something needs to happen to grab the reader's attention and get them excited for who's next. Looking at this thread, it hasn't happened yet so onwards to the next arc.
As one of those who have tuned out of this discussion, I don't think Oda is able to credibly build that excitement back up again. With Whole Cake Island and Wano he demonstrated that no degree of fleshing out a character should be trusted to end in a satisfying payoff. Even if the character is getting all the hallmarks of the other Straw Hats, be it a tragic past/present, being an outcast, a dream that necessitates leaving their home and traveling the Grand Line, circumstances that prevent them from chasing said dream until Luffy comes along, chemistry with the crew, a unique design and skills that could be put towards a position on the ship – none of it will guarantee that Oda isn't pulling another curveball on us.

My point here is that maybe you should humble yourself a bit more and consider the possibility of being wrong, instead of being absolutely convinced of your headcanon being accurate and defending it tooth and nail while shooting down any other perspectives. But that is apparently only wishful thinking and I need to go back to ignoring your utter lack of self-reflection despite wishing that maybe, you'll expand your horizon one day.
Cookie, there really is no need to push to this degree. Yes being reflective and humble are important traits (and Deicide can argue for himself whether he has a history of those or not), but the way you're stating this is needlessly confrontational and condescending.
And a bit hypocritical, if one thinks back to the amount of self-reflection and humbleness you expressed once "Yamato stays in Wano" outcome manifested, mostly adopting a mindset that the numerous people who picked up a vibe that we were headed for a "Yamato stays with Momo to protect Wano because Momo and the samurai are insufficient to protect the land" outcome got exactly that right by pure 100% unfounded fluke luck with not a single of that groups overall argued Momo-bonding trends or Crewmate-positioning shortcomings having merit, because the nitty gritty specifics didn't check out exactly. It's not hypocritical of me to stand my ground and say that those people being right in the end is more due to luck/coincidence than their arguments because that is actually the case.
People kept arguing "This new scene is evidence that Yamato will change his mind and stay" and up until the very end, Oda countered with another scene that Yamato still intends to leave. For example, take the panel Deicide posted earlier. Deicide argued that Yamato witnessing Momo's doubts above Onigashima will make him reconsider and want to stay after all. Except, surprise: It didn't. Yamato met the Straw Hats and declared his will to leave Wano behind. So Deicide's argument that the respective scene would be a trigger to make Yamato stay was wrong.
Or in another case, Yamato's fruit being one of Wano's Guardian Deities is evidence that he will ultimately stay behind to fulfill that role. Except, surprise: He didn't stay behind because he felt an obligation based on his Devil Fruit. So that argument was also wrong. That's not nitty gritty specifics.
I wouldn't revive this discussion here except for you specifically bringing up the matter of being capable of "self reflection".
And even if you're absolutely unwilling to concede another persons interpretation as founded/validTo be fair, what I never (at least to my recollection) dismissed as an invalid argument is their claim that Yamato is bonding more with Momo than the Straw Hats. I don't think I ever disputed that.
you can stop at "I disagree with that interpretation; my interpretation is this". No need for nonsense like "I hope you expand your horizons one day", that's certainly not something that'll make another poster think "you now what you're right, my perspective was wrong".
I've mentioned it before: If people refuse to consider arguments because their feelings are hurt, that's their prerogative.
You argued back in 1059 that the "yamato stays" arguments warranted the amount of condescension you gave them, and to that I say:
Just don't be condescending at all. Even had Yamato ultimately not stayed behind to protect Wano with Momo because Momo and his Scabbards weren't strong enough. After skimming our discussion from back then and from how I remember Wano and corresponding discussions unfold, I have to say: It's fine if people have a different interpretation of the story. We can argue back and forth which interpretation is more valid or if such a thing even exists. I did already say before that Deicide might end up being right about Atlas based on the observations he listed.
However, what I personally take offense to is a pattern of blowing things like panel sizes or lines that turn out to be insignificant out of proportion to come up with a headcanon that people end up being absolutely convinced of, and every time that headcanon turns out to be inaccurate the goalposts are being moved, next time it'll totally be right on the money. And if neither arguments nor actually being proven wrong makes people break out of that vicious cycle, being condescending is my coping mechanism for my frustration of watching them not learn at all.
But I am fully aware that this isn't actually helping anyone and that I should rather choose to ignore these situations. Not being able to do so is completely on me.
A bit more ranting about hypocritical behavior that will probably be even more irrelevant to most:
-
RE: Chapter 1075: Labophase Death Game
@Zanze Is it that unusual though? Devil Fruits permanently altering the users' bodies doesn't happen often but there are just enough precedents for it. Luffy is always rubber, Alvida's appearance drastically changed after eating her fruit, Kuma grew paw pads, Capone's body became a fortress, I don't think that Blamenco always had pockets on his body, and Sugar's body doesn't age anymore.

@Dogmeat said in Chapter 1075: Labophase Death Game:
- Having assistants and capable surgeons are indeed one possibility, but it seems pretty far-fetched and that doesn't tell anything, that is just a shoehorned answer to that specific question ^^
What exactly is far-fetched about finding capable assistants and giving them detailed instructions?
None of those supposed assistants have been seen or heard of since the arrival on the island.
They've all been background characters so far, but they've last been seen when the Labophase was evacuated, which happened some time after the Straw Hats arrived. We also don't know when exactly the Satellites were created. Since they're clones that don't rely on Punk Records to be sentient, it's possible that they were created before the Stella displaced his brain and as such were able to assist in the procedure
The removal of its brain isn't a recent thing, it happened quite some years ago when Vegapunk was dealing with pirates more than the governement, so he didn't have access to the same ressources either.
That's outright false. When Vegapunk met the Five Elders his head was still huge. When big-brained Vegapunk met Dragon on Ohara the latter commented on the news that Vegapunk became part of the World Government.
If someone else can do such heavy procedures, why is Vegapunk important? Just take his assistants... That doesn't make much sense... Hell, they might even have kept a small piece of brain as a souvenir ;)
Following instructions isn't the same as coming up with them.
Besides, that is still missing the point: How does his unheard and unseen team of elite surgeons manipulates an Island sized brain? And why would he keep silent about it?
We don't know how large the brain was at the time of removal. It is still growing even now, so it might have been at a more manageable size during the procedure. And why exactly would he go into detail how exactly the brain was cut out?
And, again a major point here, Why brush off Jinbei's question that way if there is nothing suspicious about this "surgery"? Just as a note, nobody said it was actual surgery, there are other ways to act on the body in that world.
What question exactly are you referring to? Feel free to include panels from the manga
- So he first plants an emitter that emits from something that isn't there, so that the fragments of his pieced mind controlled by the brain he didn't remove yet can act on him to remove said brain, set it up and connect it to to emitter in the first place.......
That doesn't work ^^ Simply put, you are telling me that you walked through the door and then you opened it... That would add quite a lot of questions instead of answering those ^^
It's really not that complicated.
Step 1: Come up with a thorough theory on how to keep your brain separate yet still functional without dying in the process
Step 2: Prepare the storage location including the transmitter, the receiver and personnel to execute the procedure
Step 3: After making sure that everything is scientifically sound, go through the procedure
Step 4: Hopefully wake up again with your brain in a different location -
