      ! Strange, nice aren't the vibes I get from the Empress, might have to do with the fact that MEETING her means you're considered compromised lol…
      ! As for Black, I do like the potential for him being "saved" despite himself. I do love the theory of him being necroed, although I'm partial to the school of though that necromancy brings you back... different...
      ! And now that you say it, I do hope that Black Queen doesn't exclude spamming corpse explosion. Still, I think any knight class would feel pretty outdated since she's already a (vice-)Queen... Still, I would rather for the author to surprise us with something of the left field like the Hierophant or Duchess classes...
      ! Now I wonder when (if) Thief and Archer will get an upgrade...

      ! Hahaha, yeah, no she's obviously terrifying to most people but I mean towards people she likes. Like she and Black seem so buddies. :happy:
      I'm hoping that keeps.
      ! Well, I reason we've already had a surprise name with Hierophant so Cat's should have some more. Well, should and should, another surprise could also be good. And Death Knight is just so metal. 🆒
      ! Do we know if Thief and Archer even are transitional names?

      Also, do you read any other webnovels, since you enjoy the guide, you might also enjoy something like Mother of Learning, although it's a bit different it's pretty high quality too.

      I've gone and read some other, yes. None that I've taken so much liking to as A Practical Guide to Evil. Just started The Gods are Bastard on your recommendation, it's pretty good… But it's not a guide. 😜
      Since you're recommending, thanks for that by the way, I guess I'm looking for some sci-fi...? With a female protagonist.

      ! We haven't seen enough of the empress for me to truly care that much about her, I like Traitorous better lol.
      ! Hierophant is probably my favorite character, I'm a sucker for wizard-like characters and I feel like he embodies the mad scientist troope perfectly. I just love how incredibly aloof he is having no problem performing vivisection and all kind of awful experiments. Also, that Ubua comment recently was frinkin gold.
      ! And his quirk of always correcting people is hillarious.
      ! In the same vein, I feel that I'll probably like Warlock a lot if we see more of him (if he doesn't die in the next few chapters…).
      ! Also, how do you feel about the whole black situation? Do you think that Black is a dead man walking, or will he outplay the narrative?

      ! Dunno why I like Malicia, first of her name, actually. She seems nice I guess? Hahaha.
      ! The Black situation… I dunno, could go either way. But I doubt Black himself will outplay it, Cat might though. It would make sense too, instead of her becoming the Black Knight as per expectation she becomes something else. Something new like, Black Queen could be, feels like it's being set up for that. Personally I'd like Death Knight because that's just cool and we could get the suicide armies we all dream of. :happy:

      She mostly seems interested in making Poe understand that he doesn't get to question her but never has she given the impression of having a plan or really discuss it. She just tell him to wait and have hope.

      When he confronts her about it after all ships but the cruiser has been destroyed, she does imply that there is a plan. "Tell us that we have a plan, that there is hope," he asks and she responds with that there is hope, as you said, which then would imply that there is a plan.
      Dunno where I got that she told him about it a second time though, my bad. ._.

      Her first interaction with Poe is about how reckless he is. And not to long ago he disobeyed orders when he thought he knew better. Reassuring him that they have a solid plan and there is no need for recklessness seems like a good idea.

      Reassuring him is what she did, as I mentioned above. It didn't stick. And since he doesn't trust her enough to tell her his plan, why would he trust her reassurances?

      I don't know or care that he would have. But I think she should have told him to minimize the risk.

      Holdo would have cared though. Maybe she thought that he wouldn't like the plan and commit mutiny? Then not telling him would be to minimize the risk.

      In which case I would be be fully mad at Poe for pure recklessness and loathe the poor purple lady that tried her best. Whereas in this case while I am glad that Poe reckless attitude did not pay of I can understand why he tried a long shot with the situation he tought he was in(dead for sure with a leadership without plan).

      I'm guessing that that "loathe" should be "feel for", or the like?
      Well, he was as wrong as you are. 😛

      @andre:

      Hey guys. I've read quite a few articles recently that have seemed to reduce most of the arguments against this film and attempts at pointing out perceived flaws as rooted in subconscious and pure sexism/racism. Do you guys think this is accurate, or maybe even more so, do any of you think it has colored the debate and discussion in this forum thus far? I can post something a facebook friend posted as an example.

      https://bittergertrude.com/2018/01/04/why-so-many-men-hate-the-last-jedi-but-cant-agree-on-why/

      Personally, I do think that there's probably a decent chunk that falls under this, but I don't think it's a fair critique of… all the critique of this film.

      Hello! 🙂
      I think it's accurate that at least a lot of the arguments against this film are rooted in sexism/racism. Most? Maybe. I'm sure it has coloured the debate to some extent. I haven't seen any outright sexism or racism here of course. But we all know that that stuff is pretty insidious. I'm rather certain it has affected my views of the film..
      Of course it shouldn't be used as a counter point when someone is trying to point out some fault they perceive in the film. I could have used it a bunch when I defended Holdo, the fact that women in positions of power are judged harder is pretty well known and accepted. But it is only true in general so I would never accuse any single individual of sexism just because they unfairly, in my opinion, judged this one woman this one time.
      Personally, the fact that a film, a freaking Star Wars film, can say so much on or about this have made it all the more enjoyable. Pretty sure I rank it above 5 now. 😛

      I think my problem with lady purple hair was that if Poe is reckless guy not having a plan would only entice him to act recklessly to save them. So giving a plan or the idea that there is a real plan was the most sensible solution considering why Leia demoted him.

      "A plan"? You mean straight up lie or something? Because as far as I remember there was only the one plan. And Holdo did try to tell him that there was a plan, like, twice I think? Why are people so insistent on that she should have known that he was gonna mess up again and that when he does it's her fault somehow… Can't she have some faith in the people she works with?
      And how are everyone so sure that Poe would have gone with the jump-ship-plan if he had known about it and the base? Even after he knows his plan has failed he only says about the jump-ship-plan "it could work."(or something along those lines.) That's not the most overwhelming endorsement I've heard.
      Me, I'm thinking he would have gone with his high-risk plan, that would have saved not only the rebels but also their cruiser. He have after all seen such plans succeed at least twice, starkiller base and the dreadnaught, and I'd wager a lot more times...

      @Ubiq:

      The ships wouldn't fall backwards the way we see though like a plane falling out of the sky. Even then, there's still the problem where a larger ship with more powerful engines would be faster regardless of whether the other one was "lighter"; we actually saw that in Empire where Han says outright that the Falcon can't outrun a Star Destroyer.

      it doesn't look anything at all like a plane falling out of the sky, I'm not sure what you are talking about.
      It would look like a ball being dropped on earth (in a vacuum.) If the acceleration of the pursuing ship is in the 9.8m/s*s region, it would be exactly the same(ignoring size of the earth and such). This is just Newton's laws of motion we are talking about here.
      There are other examples you could have used to show that the movie is breaking our laws of physics. Like when Poe's X-wing comes to a halt in front of the dreadnought.
      Of course, I wouldn't assume that our laws of physics hold in the Star Wars universe, so I would only point to that instead of debating the thing with you.

      Since the Falcon can't outrun a Star Destroyer and the Falcon is a lighter ship then a Star Destroyer then no lighter ships can outrun a heavier? 😛

      EDIT: Deleted an physics argument that was (very) probably extremely wrong.

      The whole business with the chase scene for instance. The ships wouldn't suddenly just stop and fall backwards like that even if they run out of fuel since there's nothing to slow them down; they'd continue moving forward at their maximum speed.

      If we assume normal physics applies, which I'm guessing is what you are doing… Then there is no maximum speed(basically). And since the other ships are still under thrust and thus speeding up, it would indeed look as if the ships out of fuel were falling backwards.

      @Robby:

      ! It's not about INSPIRING. It's about getting the message across specifically to your incredibly stubborn bullheaded commander that makes rash decisions that get people killed.
      ! Do the fancy speech to a big audience. Do the personal speech to one guy. Save a lot of heartache.

      ! And what makes you so certain that your "easy solution" speech would get the message across? What new information does it contain that Poe doesn't already know? He knows that there is a plan. He should have gotten the "I'm pissed at you for that stunt" thing from when Holdo said something along the lines of "didn't you just get demoted?" And if he really is as stubborn as you say, telling him to stop asking questions is likely to help?
      This leaves the bit about how the plan is one Leia came up with(which I'm not sure is true but whatever.) We already know though that Poe won't hesitate to disobey Leia so it isn't an 100% easy solution fix. It's not a bad idea though, appealing to his trust in Leia, and I think that Holdo did just that with the "Leia used to tell me…[some saying about hope]."
      Now I say, if there is an idiot ball at play here, it's most definitely in Poe's court. Let's contemplate why he didn't tell her his plan. He says it's because she wouldn't allow it, but how can he know that for sure? If she didn't have any plan at all, which is what he believed I think, then surely even a long shot plan is better than no plan? I still don't think he's playing with an idiot ball though, I think this is an intended failure of his character which is addressed in his story arc.

      @ARTEMlS:

      ! Yeah, giving Poe a proper personal message and delivering an inspiring speech does not exclude eath other. Regarding Poe, the point is Holdo completely failed in one point that is crucial for any leader figure. That is, gaining Poe's acceptance.
      ! Looking at Robby's example, unlike what happened in the film she also gave proper reasoning. That doesn't prevent her from giving an inspiring speech to everyone as well. Besides, Poe doesn't have to like everything she will say. But despite this he has to fully accept her as the current leader figure. And in that regard she just did not deliver.

      ! Then Leia is also a complete failure as a leader? Since Poe disobeyed her too.

      @Batoma:

      Regarding Holdo:

      ! She may well have had legitimate reasons for not telling Poe of her plans, especially considering his brash attitude towards his superiors throughout the film. The question I have is why she apparently didn't tell the bridge crew. In particular, the woman working the computer on the bridge overseeing the fueling of the transports, the one who lied about Finn and Rose's ship departing the fleet, and who assisted Poe in the mutiny was apparently high ranked enough to basically oversee the final departures of transports from the resistance base at the beginning of the movie and was significant enough to have one of the first, if not the first, speaking roles on the resistance side. Who actually knew about the plan? Apart from Benicio Del Toro who learned about it…somehow. Is there a scene I'm missing where he learned about it with enough details to inform the first order?

      ! We don't know who on the bridge crew she told, might be she didn't tell anyone about the base.
      The woman playing the woman working the computer is Carrie Fishers daughter. We don't know how high up her character is in the rank, I'd assume pretty high too but who knows.
      Benicio's character overheard the plan to leave with the shuttles(or whatever those ships are called) when Poe is talking to Finn and Rose over the comms, right before they are about to go in to the room with the tracking device. I think.

      @Demon:

      ! I am in the group that loves this movie, it's my second favorite Star Wars Movie. That being said, Holdo not telling Poe her plan is the biggest flaw in this entire movie. Yes, there are reasons you can rationalize why she wouldn't tell him, but the movie didn't do any real job of explaining WHY.
      ! It's not a "Plothole" as some people are claiming it is because they misunderstand what a Plothole is. Plotholes are story issues that make no sense without a major retcon or massive new addition to the plot. Her not telling him makes sense if you rationalize it, but the fact that you have to rationalize it at all DOES mean the movie dropped the ball in explaining this to us.

      ! What I wonder is if anyone have questioned why Poe didn't just tell Holdo about his plan? I know didn't until just now. His rational could easily be hers. I guess he was the one who outright said anything about it, something about how she probably wouldn't OK the mission so it was on a need-to-know basis. If I remember correctly.
      More interestingly to me though is the role sexism plays in this. I think it clearly true that the actions of females are judged harsher then those of males, speaking generally. I believe that this carries over to a non trivial extent to the situation under debate.
      ! If I may ask you a question, for clarifications sake, do you agree with me that her decision was sound? Based only on what can be inferred from the movie? Because if you do, it isn't the movie who failed to explain her reasons but you who failed to understand them.

      Easy solution.

      @ARTEMlS:

      About Holdo:

      ! The way she communicated just was utter bullshit.
      ! Regarding Poe, there basically are two options: Tell him the plan or not. Obviously she chose the latter, but that does not excuse her from not properly communicating with him. She might tell him something else, but she has to make sure that he doesn't do anything stupid which might endanger the actual plan. (Which was exactly what happened then. :getlost: ) Like for example telling him some wrong information with the intent to expose a potential spy in case Poe talks it out - or even expose Poe himself as the spy which is perfectly valid for her to assume. The way it is now, Holdo just was a complete failure without any proper leadership capabilities at all.

      ! Firstly, no it was not utter bullshit it was the best, as my theory states, "Holdo is best and everything with Holdo is best."
      ! And why would she need to make sure that he doesn't make anything stupid? What is he, a baby or something? In general, leaders should be able to assume that their underlings don't shit their own pants.
      And lying to him? Might backfire. Accuse him of being a spy? I don't see any reasons as to why she would think that. And several why she wouldn't.
      ! A complete failure, hu? She's the single reason as to why there is any resistance at all left. Her plan would have worked perfectly if it weren't for the mutiny. And you'll notice that only a handful of people mutinied against her, all allies of Poe I'm assuming.
      ! …I'm think I'm gonna make "Holdo is best and everything with Holdo is best" my signature… That should be fine... Right? Not like spoilery or anything? :ermm:

      ! He disobeyed orders and attacked the Order. It's not like he would have betrayed the Resistance.
      ! Also, what's the point to hide this information after Poe found out they were about to evacuate the ship ? This is when she was supposed to say "oh shit, btw don't rebel lol, there is one of our bases in a nearby planet, we're heading there!! "
      ! Anyway, the fact that Benicio Del Toro was the only person that could warn them means that there was no spy whatsoever.

      ! I'm saying that she might be disinclined to share information with an individual who don't obey orders. Instead of agreeing with her plan he could come up with some long shot plan doomed to fail, theoretically. There's a reason why every military force on our planet has a rank system. (I'm not 100% that 100% have ranks but close to it feels like a safe assumption.)
      ! The point is the same as before basically, but now with the added annoyance factor that he obtained the classified information and called her a traitor and whatnot. The information is still highly sensitive. If the First Order found out that they were heading for a nearby planet they could just hyper jump over there and wait for them.
      ! First of all, the argument about Benicio Del Toro being the only one that could warn them(betray them, you mean I'm assuming) is completely irrelevant as we only know that because we've watched the movie or perhaps they in hindsight. It's also wrong because it could be that there were spies in the rebel fleet who didn't get the information precisely because Holdo choose to… withholdo it. :silly:

      ROLL CREDITS 30 minutes earlier and save us from one of the most useless filler plots that lead to nothing basically.

      ! The Resistance operate under some form of a military hierarchy. So answering that question is up to Holdo as she outranks Poe. She doesn't tell him, which she could have several reasons for. One theoretical example could be that she was concerned that spreading the information might lead to it being broadcast on unsecured coms, leading to it being overhead by some unsavory element and then given to the First Order. And that the Theoretical Unsavory Element(TUE) might be played by Benicio Del Toro.

I'd only put her barely above Jyn... maybe. She seemed promising and I'm actually a fan of how her parentage played out, but other than that, she's not someone I want to root for. I don't see the depth to her character, especially now that her parentage plotline has been finished.

      ! Aspects, hu… Depth to her character? I don't think she has many aspects nor much depth. We're talking about Star Wars here, the main character in the movie Star Wars was a freaking farm boy.
      That said I guess I think it's cool how she's spent her whole life in a shit hole so bad it's practically a prison. All people around her other prisoners or jailers, no one to trust. In some ways it makes her that fish out of water thing, but, like, a fish with a shiv. I like how she's the most powerful and great at waving the sword thing around. (And, nah, I don't care that she hasn't trained with it. She learned fighting growing up, enough for me.) I like that she's pretty cheerful all things considered. I like that she's a woman. I like... Actually, you've watched the movies so I dunno, I like basically everything about her so far. 👅 Her actress is great too.

      Anyone watching The Gifted? Is it getting better? I fell off after three episodes.

      Nah, it's pretty much the same. I don't think it's bad but it's not great either.

      Marvel's Runaways started. Liked the second of the two episodes I saw more.

      ! Haven't read the comic but know bits and pieces. Not a fan of the teen drama in the first episode but seeing the same day play out from the parents perspective was a big improvement. Like the kids sidelining their drama for the bigger issue.
      ! The kids themselves seem mostly generic at first but I can tell there's more to them. Feel like the more I see the more I'll like them. Totally on board.

      ! I have read it, it's a great comic but I can understand why they made some of the changes they have made for the TV series. Some of them I like, making the parents not each others mirror image for instance. Some I dislike, like making the parents all evil scientists/CEOs. Or some of the teen drama. (And I can see why they have gone with the church of the gibborim instead of the original… 😛 )

      Well clearly i must be on some kind of bias or brain damage because three Scandi's swear to never having seen more than at most a handful of women in full cover in their lifetime and i could honestly swear that i see atleast one women dressed in such garb every single week. Leaving me to assume one of two things, either the garb i think of, which is full cover of the body and the hair leaving only a small facial window where the eyes, the tope of the nose and eyebrows are visible isn't in the garb family we are discussing. Or that i'm touched in the head somehow causing me to see things which aren't there. But to answer your question no i've never thought to count, mostly because i've never had a reason to care about what i thought of to be an everyday thing in the vein of seeing a wino or a construction worker or something else that's just common enough to not register on your that's a weird new thing radar.

      Well, cognitive bias is a powerful thing. For instance, might it not be that you have just a few people wearing face veils but you keep counting them as different people, seeing as they would be rather hard to identify? In the same way that techno-bums(homeless persons using solar power to drive an assortment of technological devices) are quite an uncommon thing here in Gothenburg, but I keep seeing them everywhere. Of course, I know that it's the same dude.
      But I'll propose another explanation. It might be that your city just happens to have a lot of people wearing face veils because they have stuck together because of cultural ties or something.

      Yeah no i totally recant on the burka one when i googled it. I can only blame my ignorance on the fact that the one i see quite alot is always refered to as a burqa in my surroundings and even in the papers back when the school ban was in the talks. But the one with the eyes and eyebrows showing i do maintain that i see quite alot in the city. Mostly older women though, the young ladies with it are rarer. But common enough that i don't really react to it if nothing else.

      Have you accounted for cognitive biases in this hypothesis? Which is to say, have you ever counted? Could you give us a number? I did sorta count one year, I counted seeing… Eh, what was it... Well, single digit. I got tired of counting normal veils but there is about 20k people from Iraq and Iran in my city and 570k people.

      Burqas certainly aren't an uncommon sight on the streets in Sweden.

      I'm going to assume you've never been to any streets in Sweden then. I've never seen a single burqa in my life and I lived in one of the most Muslim neighborhood in Sweden. I have seen a few niqabs/face veils but I would most definitively say that they are uncommon.

      Speaking about the argument in general, I'm very against any ban of any way of dressing. Let people dress they wanna dress. I feel forcing people to dress a certain way is the purview of dictators, fascists and racist populists.

      They didn't have to go to the literal Middle East to be raiding Middle Eastern civilization. Iberia would have been broadly under Muslim control back then.

      Fair enough. I read about one attack they did on Seville on wikipedia just now, link, and it seems it's not really new knowledge that some vikings converted to Islam, "In addition, some of the raiders remained and settled in the area, converted to Islam, and became cheese traders.[2]" Love the cheese traders bit. 😛
      Also, they did also go to the literal Middle East, all the way to Baghdad even I believe, so they could totally have picked up religion from just trading.

      Vikings were literally barbarian pirates, who divided their time between raiding toothless bog peasants, and raiding the nearest first world of the time, which would have been the Balkans and Middle East.

      Dunno that they did much raiding in Middle East, all I've heard of is the trading and the mercenary stuff? Seems real crazy to be messing with Byzantines and the Caliphate.
      Also put me down as super unsurprised at the Muslim vikings, last time I was so unsurprised was the thing with the female viking warriors.

      The comic is great. 🙂 If you like plot twists you'll probably want to avoid spoilers like the plague though. Dunno about the MCU but in the comic Cloak and Dagger shows up and seeing as they too are getting a TV series I'd assume they'll be in at least.

      EDIT: Or not, "In July, Loeb said there were no plans to crossover, nor to crossover across networks with the similarly themed Marvel's Runaways on Hulu. He added that Marvel wanted the series to find its footing before further connecting with other elements of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, saying "You'll see things that comment on each other; we try to touch base wherever we can… things that are happening in L.A. [where [I]Runaways is set] are not exactly going to be affecting what's happening in New Orleans… It's being aware of it and trying to find a way for it to be able to discuss in a way that makes sense."[23]"

      The Nordic Resistance Movement held a rally yesterday in Gothenburg Sweden. Lots of people were arrested once a riot broke out. The movement describes itself as a "national socialist organization" on their website according to this article. Their goal is to create a unified Nordic nation apparently.

      Didn't see any of the rally or counter-protesting, but the whole thing seemed like a pretty calm affair. Like, I've only heard about two people getting injured. Only thing I noticed was some trams getting cancelled and a helicopter or two buzzing about.
