    • RE: One Piece Live-Adaptation Drama Announced

      I can't see this being any worse of a reflection of the manga than the anime is, especially if Oda retains any kind of creative power and Adelstein's statement is legit. I've been thinking for a while that One Piece absolutely has the potential to be a kid friendly Game of Thrones. It has the massive world full of interesting characters without the sex and gore. Also, Game of Thrones is difficult to get into since it throws a shit-load of kingdoms at you right off the bat and branches off into even more locations and characters. One Piece is more user friendly and allows for a more gradual build with the audience learning about the world as Luffy does.

      Obviously it requires major changes to be watchable, changes to things that kind of embody the spirit of One Piece. It needs to maintain a lighthearted tone, but it can't be quite as goofy as the manga is. Real people just don't act like manga characters and they REALLY don't act like One Piece characters. Luffy can still be dumb and care-free, Zoro can still be single-minded, Nami can still be money hungry but everything needs to be toned way down. Use some of the goofier character designs as inspiration for cool looking costuming without actually having Zeff wear a ten story chef's hat.

      I'm also curious just how close to the story this series would go. Live action shows like this usually hinge on dramatic reveals or character deaths for climatic moments in a season. I know One Piece isn't completely devoid of that stuff, but the climax is usually Luffy punching someone. There could still be fights but they might have to come up with more "clever" ways of beating the bad guy, especially since they will likely tone down the magic powers. The flashbacks would be essential, but they might have to find more creative way of working them into the story rather than dumping the whole thing at once.

      I'm interested what this will actually turn into.

    • RE: Hiatus x Hiatus III: Goodnight, Sweet Princes

      The only reason I voted for Chrollo to win the fight is because of the way it was set up as a fight to the death. I agreed with everyone who said that Hisoka is a better and more interesting character, but he is also more transparent. He's a creep who gets off on fighting worthy opponents. He's a fully realized character and even though he's great, it wouldn't be that weird to kill him off to reintroduce Chrollo into the story. It would have been weird if after all this time of him being away, he returned only to immediately get killed by Hisoka. Even if he used some kind of trickery to escape death, that would have possibly been even worse. "I agree to your challenge, but let’s make it a death match, oops I lost, but also I’m still alive somehow." What a threatening villain!

      Chrollo is still a bit more of a mystery and there are a few more things to be revealed about his motives, not to mention his connections with the rest of the Troupe, Kurapika's beef and even Meteor City (and possibly Gyro!) Hisoka seems like more of a monkey wrench to throw at the story at any time to make it more chaotic (nothing wrong with that!) Also, in the event that both of them survived the fight it's way more characteristic for Hisoka to be the one to cheat death, although that's probably the hindsight talking.

      Now this boat is going to be an effing bloodbath. Looking forward to seeing that in a year and a half or so!

      I think the clock beard is Sanji's dad… But this would mean he is not only an evil army leader but also a noble... could explain why he was able to get Sanji an only alive status

      More curious is the guy with the Sanji like hair... Someone said it is Stelly. But I doubt it... I kid design of doesn't matter... But why should they show him not showing the face in his major panels and later in such small "meaningless" one?

      And next big question i hope will be answered is Baltigo... A secret island for 1000 years... What is it? And how Dragon has discovered it?

      It would mean he's a king, not just a noble. I feel like someone would have described the Vinsmoke family as royalty by now if he's actually a king.

      I'm curious how they will incorporate the Reverie going forward. It seems tailor-made for the in-between arc stuff where we see what's going on around the world. Obviously since Vivi's just leaving now it should take a while to get to the New World even with an eternal pose. I think waiting till after Wano for it to start is too long, though. We don't know how long the Sanji Wedding Story will take in-universe, but I think whenever that is resolved, they should show the beginning of the Reverie, establishing all the big players arriving and get the ball rolling a bit. Then after Kaidou is taken down we can rejoin them in progress and show just how much an Emperor being defeated affects the entire world.

      I'm assuming it's not just one meeting over the course of one day. I feel like since all the rulers have to travel so far by ship to get there and they only meet every four years they could stretch the council meetings over a week at least. I'm wondering if it will go on long enough to keep a lot of Luffy's allies in the New World when shit goes down after the final war starts, or if just a few of the more important ones like Vivi and Shirahoshi will team up and remain in the NW to carry out some later revealed important plot point before all hell breaks loose.

      I'm thinking that after the giant robot spider fails to pan out, Dean Spreck should get Greendale into some sort of legal trouble. Since Jeff is supposedly helping the little guy now, it would be a good opportunity to show him doing that while giving him a reason to be on campus.

      Also, it would probably be impossible to get Giancarlo Esposito for a whole season, but they should try to get Gilbert to replace Pierce.

      @RobbyBevard:

      You could have pulled exactly the same thing with the Joker. Note for note.

      ! This crazy madman in clown makeup is blowing up buildings, making threats, filming videos and causing chaos for no apparent reason. An hour into the film, you find out he's actually just a stoned british actor that wants to get laid, who has no idea any of the destruction is real, that was hired by one of Bruce Wayne's corporate rivals so he can take advantage of the chaos and profit… Batman was never really part of the equation. Then the rest of the movie focuses on the mob boss who was actually using the threat of the Joker to control the other mob bosses!
      ! See, because its a movie, it's not beholden at all to typical interpretations of Joker as a crazy mad dog main adversary of Batman... it's okay to just have him be a minor note red herring of no real significance and pretend the movie is going to be about Batman's greatest adversary, when really you're doing a story about a C-list character instead.

      It would be the exact same treatment and waste of the character. If you think it would be a bad waste of one character, how is it any different for another?

      The Joker is one of if not the most popular and beloved villains in ALL of pop culture, let alone comics. To compare him to the Mandarin is kind of ridiculous.

      ! More people would be pissed because more people care about the Joker than the Mandarin. And for good reason. The Mandarin kind of sucks. For those who did think he was a great villain in the comics and really liked him, they are entitled to be pissed somewhat. I see where you're coming from. But honestly, I think it was worth pissing off a few people to make the overall story more unpredictable and exciting. Who cares THAT MUCH about the Mandarin? There's a reason they waited three movies to feature "Iron Man's Greatest foe."

      In my mind things like having good actors, and people behind the screen who enjoy comics were so obvious that it didn't really feel like it needed to be put out there.

      I mean can you ever make a great movie without great actors and direction? Barring the room of course.

      But to me it was the simplicity of it all that made it. Keeping the plot simple left a lot of room for fun, character interaction and just plain old action

      I don't really want to argue with you any further because I agree with everything you're saying. I'm just saying that the Avengers may have had a simple plot, but it was anything but simple to make. And I don't just mean like how any movie is difficult to make. The plot got to be so simple and comic book-like because every single important character was established and developed over the previous five movies. And then it was an awesome movie in its own right.

      @wolfwoof:

      A large part of what made the avengers great was that it didn't get all up it's own ass with "complex" plotlines that need not be

      And that it dared to play up the comic book factor. The shield helicarrier was a superb little touch.

      Avengers did keep it simple to an extent and did a lot of the little things right. But that's not the only reason it was good. People act likes its so easy to make a movie like the Avengers and all you have to do is make it fun and like a comic book. There is more to that movie including the five movies that set it up, the plethora of great actors, the movie producer who enjoys and respects the source material and was willing to risk it, and the talented director who likes the comics as well. I loved the Avengers for a lot of reasons, but keeping things simple can just as easily make a movie boring.

      @RobbyBevard:

      They are a large factor actually, yes.

      I'm not saying their success had nothing to do with it, but it's dumb to blame a filmmaker for the trends in Hollywood. Jaws made modern blockbusters a thing so I guess I should sarcastically roll my eyes and say thanks Stephen Spielberg whenever I see a trailer for Jack the Giant Killer or whatever.

      So it's Pixar's fault that there are no more hand-drawn 2-D animated films anymore? Even though everyone in Pixar loves 2-D movies and would love to see more of them.

      @The:

      You can thank Nolan for that.

      All of the Nolan crucificying is bull. You can thank all the hack producers who thought his movies were popular only because they were dark. He did Batman his way, made a but-load of money and indirectly made the Avengers possible if anything. You don't have to like his movies, but don't blame him for the lack of movies like the Avengers. The Avengers isn't just good because its "light-hearted and simple." It was meticulously built up through five other films and was well-made in its own right. (Not just singling you out, I've been hearing a lot of talk like this in general lately.)

      It's… not really a risk or a dazzling new idea when Batman Begins did the exact same thing.

      ! Batman Begins did the exact opposite. They had the big time star and (arguably) better actor end up being the villain the whole time. It really wasn't that surprising, just like it wasn't a surprise when Cotillard ended up being Talia Al Ghul in DKR. It is different and it is a risk when you advertise Ben Kingsley as the bad ass terrorist villain and make him a red herring.

      ! I appreciate this movie for injecting some genuine unpredictability. I agree the villain Kingsley was pretending to be was more interesting than Killian himself, but its not like it would have been absolutely groundbreaking if we actually got the Mandarin from the trailers. Even if it would have been slightly better we've seen that villain before. I think the twist was worth sacrificing that character.

      I love the darkest timeline but even I'm kind of concerned with the direction the finale is taking. I was all for it if they were going to use the darkest timeline as a kind of metaphor to show where the study group have been, where they could have ended up, as opposed to how they actually are now (how they've changed)… but it looks like a flat out sci-fi story without the tiniest semblance of realism.

      If they do it right I enjoy this kind of story, but still.... Should be interesting to say the least.

      I'm all for Chang being back. I'm all for Changnesia. I liked that episode quite a bit. I'm not for it all being swept under the rug, which is what's happening. Abed gave him the official bill of forgiveness this episode, and no one knows he was playing them all.

      It feels so weird to be ranting about Communtiy. Every thing feels out of balance in the unviverse.

      I'm not saying they didn't sweep it under the rug. I'm saying they had thirteen episodes to show what Chang has been up to, what his connection to Dean Spreck was, why he wanted to come back, why anyone in the right mind would let him come back, and then give him something to do once he returned. They did the bare minimum here and devoted only one episode to it. They devoted about as much time as they should have to Chang. This wasn't enough time to make his return that believable, like you said, but with the 13 episode limit they didn't really have a choice. Chang is not the focus of the show and they shouldn't have used anymore time on him then they did. They did a decent job tying up all the loose ends for what they were expecting to be the final season (even though it probably won't be).

      I still believe the biggest problem with this season (which I've really enjoyed overall) is the half order of episodes it got.

      Everyone legitimately thinks or would rather believe that Chang has forgotten about trying to kill them. That was established in the Changnesia episode, whether you buy it or not. Ken Jeong was under contract for this season and they had 13 episodes to get him back in Greendale.

      Also, Troy and Abed in no way irreparably damaged their relationship. They said some terrible, true things to each other and feelings were hurt, but ultimately decided they would rather hit each other with pillows for eternity than stop hanging out. I don't know why people expected things to be strained between the two after that. Has no one else had a nasty fight with their best friend?
