    • RE: Chapter 978: Introducing the Tobi Roppo

      A lot of you are setting yourselves up for disappointment by predicting all these match ups. There won’t be as many one on one fights as you think, and it is doubtful that all the straw hats get a focused one on one match. The focused one on ones of Alabasta and Enies Lobby can be safely said to be outliers at this point.

    • RE: One Piece Live-Adaptation Drama Announced

      I think this will end up with similar quality to Arrow/Flash, Supernatural, and other cheesy CW shows or maybe some of SyFy channel's more ambitious stuff, like the Magicians or even The Expanse. I also expect it to diverge greatly from the plot and style of the manga. No 22 foot tall CGI Moriah.(tho Grodd on The Flash didn't look too bad, so maybe we will get some weird CGI characters afterall)

      In a perfect world, we will get some Kung Fu Hustle style and vibes going. I always thought that movie had the closest vibes to One Piece without going the 200 million dollar budget route.

      The fandom is overblowing this. We were never going to get a good live action adaptation no matter the budget, studio or director for multiple reasons, so may as well be happy that Oda made some easy cash. This movie being bad will have no negative effect on the franchise.

      True explosions are a joke in One Piece (Alabasta, etc), but I always took for granted they can't be broken in order for the Void Century not to be lost if WG find them. While writing this post I just asked myself how Roger could have written on a poneglyph (meaning it's destructible) but after rereading the chapter I have no clue.

      Roger wrote on the gold surrounding the poneglyph, not directly on it.

      I think people are taking the "year of sanji" too literally. It doesn't mean the whole year will focus on him or even that the arc will revolve around him. We are just going to learn his history and he will get some time to shine since he was absent for a while. Otherwise it will be business as usual.

      @Kurloz:

      Law's hax let him bind himself in regular chains. I'm talking about the chains on Smoker/Luffy/Robin which were clearly seastone as they were complaining about feeling drained.

      Law didn't switch those with regular chains, immediately after he freed himself he just directly cut them.

      ! http://i34.mangapanda.com/one-piece/677/one-piece-3518985.jpg

      There would be no point in replacing seastone chains with regular chains anyway and leaving the group restrained, he could just replace the seastone with some damn snow.

      In chapter 681 there is a small flashback that shows him cutting the chains in a Room.

      Still, what i wonder is: Why join the Yonko race? Yorki was a fun loving, partying kind of pirate. So is Shanks. Why does he go around marking territories? Why butt into the power balance when he doesn't seem to care about these shenanigans?

      Probably the same reason he protected Luffy and his hometown from the mountain bandits. He probably traveled around adventuring sharing drinks with folks, made lots of friends and became the de facto "emperor" and protector of all the places his friends live.

      And if he took territory from someone else, it was probably a similar situation to how Luffy keeps liberating island even though that's not his starting goal. Luffy became friends with Vivi, and through her, he ended up being the savior to Alabasta. Also, I can definitely see Shanks claiming a territory because they make great booze lol.

      @Porcelainpot:

      Now that this thread is finally open I can ask this question:
      I was rereading the Golden Age arc (fantastic arc but not as good as first time reading it), and I was really confused about the end with the eclipse. I know Griffith's motivations for raping Casca then are often debated and stuff like "to get back at Guts", "To reassert power over Guts", or "to prove himself to the Godhand" are what people often say. But just before the eclipse, this page: http://www.mangareader.net/96-1132-178/berserk/chapter-12.html and the pages following it, Griffith is all nice and fluffy and essentially saying that his dream, which is what he likely did the entire eclipse for, doesn't matter to him because of Guts. He expresses how important Guts is to him.
      Then, he kills all of Guts' friends, rapes Casca in front of him, tries to kill Guts and goes back to focusing on his dream of being all powerful.
      Doesn't make a whole lot of sense.
      Can anyone explain?

      I don't think he was saying that his dream didn't matter anymore. I think he was saying that being with Guts was the only thing that took his mind off his great ambition and just allowed him to simply enjoy their comradery, if only for that moment. And I think betraying Guts and killing all his friends was part of the ritual. It wouldn't have worked if he hated all those people. In order to gain that great power, he had to be willing to sacrifice all his friends. Though it has been years since I fully read that arc, so I could be wrong.

    • RE: Most Disappointing Thing in One Piece

      I agree with a lot of what you said, but I just want to address the lack of adventure/exploring issue. I've seen this brought up around the forum a lot now, and I've got to say, I think it is some kind of fantasy that One Piece used to be all about exploring and adventure. Even Skypiea, the arc that everyone talks about like the Straw Hats went around finding treasure and discovering amazing things for 50 chapters, has like a total of 2 chapters where the Straw Hats are just walking through the jungle not encountering main plot stuff. IMO, the only pure adventure chapter to exist in One Piece that has nothing to do with any other plot threads is the chapter where Luffy and Nami find Gaimon's island of weird animals.

      It's been a while since I read the arc, but I don't recall Alabasta being much better than Fishman Island at exploring cultures and what not. Didn't they only go to Yuba because they "had to take out a strong guy"(Crocodile). And Yuba was completely deserted except for one dude. No culture to be found. And I don't recall any of Alabasta's other cities being especially fleshed out compared to what we have seen on Dressrosa so far. The rest was just them traveling through the desert trying to get to Crocodile. If read weekly, I'm sure all that traveling would have felt just like everyone trying to get to Doflamingo now. Not very adventurous at all.

      I actually much prefer the scenery and world building details of Fishman Island compared to Alabasta, even if we definitely did get to see less of it. Besides Rain Base, much of Alabasta was just generic desert architecture. To say that Fishman Island with it's bubbly coral construction, fish-buses, fishman district slums, and the amazingly beautiful Ryugu Palace is soulless is crazy to me.

      As for wanting things to slow down and not have anything to do with Yonkou or other conflict; I think you are out of luck there. Believe it or not, One Piece should be in wrap up mode. The final bad guys need to get taken out and Luffy needs to take steps to achieve his goals. I think we should take Law's words to heart when he said that as soon as his plan to fuck with Kaidou gets under way, nothing will be able to slow it down. I'm afraid there won't be any time for adventure in the rest of the series. It's plot time.

      Again, I don't think One Piece was ever really about adventure, even if it seems to advertise itself as such through Luffy's outlook on piracy. It has always been about going to an island to beat a bad guy. Any awesome world building we got was a product of that.

      I think a lot of fans are seeing past arcs with nostalgia goggles and creating this mythical idea of what One Piece is, but never really was at all.

      The part about Robin being turned into a toy and then right back a few chapters later that I think was a wasted opportunity was the fact that Robin could have done some amazing spying/info gathering seeing as how she was both forgotten by everyone and didn't get put under contract by Sugar. Her sneaking around finding some cool info about Dressrosa's past that was also connected to the Void Century would have made up for her likely not getting a one-on-one fight this arc.

      What is the purpose of the online free roam in this game? As far as I can tell, you can't kill other players, and the only thing to do is cause havoc. Why would Gang members call the police to their own hideouts (which are probably full of illegal activity/goods)? Unless the cops they call are corrupt and won't arrest them all the moment they get there.

      A citizen called the cops on me for shooting one of the gang members, and when the cops showed up, they had a huge shootout with the gang. I tried to take advantage of the situation and sneak over to the target I had to knock out, but I ended up getting caught in the crossfire.

      The game has grown on me a bit. I've gotten better at driving and other stuff, so there is less frustration. I'm really in to taking on gang hideouts. A couple of them are actually kind of challenging. If you screw up and they call for back-up, and the cops get called on you, things can get pretty chaotic.

      Question for you veteran gamers out there: I'm pretty clueless on DLC. I never bought DLC for a single game for my XBox 360, and I just got a PS4(my first Sony console ever). Are these "Season Pass" things worth it? Should I buy the Watch Dogs season pass? The way I understand things, if you buy the season pass, you get any and all DLC content they release in the future, and that's great if they release a bunch of cool DLC, but what's stopping them from releasing like one dinky extra mission that isn't worth the $20?

      I'm not that far in though, so hopefully the story will get more engaging, and I will get used to the controls so I can immerse myself more in the game.

      @benjamminbrown:

      Well, I think you might be in store for a long, disappointing ride.

      The thing that's gotten the most hype about Gourmet World is the hazardous environment. Were you expecting something different than what we are currently seeing? It's pretty much like we are seeing some of the craziest stuff from the Human World taken to the nth degree. This cave maze, for instance, is very reminiscent of the maze leading to the subterranean breeding ground of the Puffer Whales.

      Isn't this the sort of thing what we've been told to expect of Gourmet World by actual characters in the story?

      No, I won't be disappointed. Just mildly bored. Lots of crazy environments/animals is completely within my expectations of what we will see in the Gourmet World. What I didn't expect was that the appeal of seeing ever wackier animals/environments would wear off on me. It's like "Oh, another giant killer jackalope, yawn". It's not impressive to me anymore and stopped being so after the Four Beast limbs merged into a boring blob.

      But in between the endless showcase of animals/environments that everyone else seems to love, there should be some cool cooking moments for Komatsu, some crazy fights with the Bishokukai/NEO, and some intriguing plot stuff about the Eclipse/GOD/Acacia, which everyone else seems to hate. That's enough to make the 3 minutes of reading per week worth it for me.

    • RE: Toriko II: Ichiryuu's Slimy Insides!!

      The crazy animals and wacky evironments used to be the main appeal of Toriko to me, but this chapter and a few previous, I just kind of felt numb to it. Any chapter that is almost purely a showcase for ridiculous environments and creatures isn't going ot work on me anymore. And while the Cooking Fest arc was extremely flawed on many levels, I liked it overall, if only for the story progression.

      Going back to the full course menu creating adventures doesn't immediately pique my interest the way all the shenanigans from the Cooking Fest did, however questionable they may be. I realize that Acacia's full course subplots will probably tie into Neo, the Bishokukai, the Eclipse, and other mysteries in one way or another, but as of now, you can count me in with the few that are bored.

      It doesn't really help that I am pretty indifferent towards Toriko and the other 3 Kings, and am much more interested in the antagonist groups(if only for character designs and intrigue). So with the appeal of the wacky evironments/animals worn off, and not being invested in the characters, these inbetween chapters aren't going to do much for me. So I can only hope that the "Air" subplot is as entertaining as the Gourmet Casino, and wait until more endgame plot heavy stuff is addressed. But it looks like I'm in the minority on that front 😊

      3- Old Man doesn't know the name of this Gladiator of the past, even though this Gladiator of the past was a member of the Royal Family and eventually became King?
