Hi guys, I was not sure where else I could say this so i'mma saying it here: Please do watch Rurouni Kenshin: Kyoto Inferno. There are some noticeable differences with the anime/manga, but if you ask me the movie already gave me more than i could ask for.

RE: Most Disappointing Thing in One Piece
I actually previously agreed that Akainu being able to take on all the commanders and having Blackbeard's crew be scared off (i wouldn't say "piss-scared", but just normal "scared") by his coming was a bit too much for me. But now, seeing that he was the one who took over the title of Fleet Admiral, I would prefer that he actually be much more powerful. Wouldn't sit too well to have an easily defeatable character take that position now, would it.
Anyway, 2 nitpicks i have:
(1) Pell didn't die.
(2) Usopp didn't get Haki!! I really was kinda hoping that he would at least have CoO, and so live up to his Dad's name. I guess that will only come later in the series then. -
RE: What aspects of One Piece were done best in what arcs?
Ooh interesting thread!
Setting - Close tie between Water 7 (i loved the water town!) and Mocktown (the only true piratey town to date. lol)
Flashbacks - Drum Island; I loved Chopper's flashback! the endscene with the fireworks at the end was just remarkable.
Action - Marineford for me. Too much Whitebeard, Akainu and Aokiji goodness in one major battlefield. And then we still add everyone else in. This arc rocked.
Adventure - Arabasta, from the time Vivi meets the crew as Ms. Wednesday all the way to the final battle. Honestly, no other arc featured them travelling together as well as this arc did.Characters - Water 7 + Enies Lobby. The characters, some of their eventual reveals, the VAs, Luffy's growth and the best thing in this series: Going Merry!
Plot - a close tie between Marineford (Ace's eventual death) and Enies Lobby (Strawhats standing perched on the roof, burning the WG flag + Robin's cry for help + Going Merry to the rescue)
Humor - They are all really good. No comment.
Villains - AKAINU. Pure badass. I also like Blackbeard as a villain - he is pure evil, no honour, no decency, just pure ambition and strength. Anyone else noticed he took 2 shots from whitebeard at point blank but could still stand and fight Sengoku?
Mystery - One piece doesn't have much of this does it. I guess the whole Robin saga during CP9 arc.
Drama - Where do i begin. I love all their backstories and Ace's death, but Going Merry's rescue and death just takes the cake for me. Chopper's backstory is a close second.

RE: One Piece 721 : Rebecca and Mr. Soldier
It does seem like Ricky is actually King Riku who actually managed to survive. But I really do hope that Mr. Toy soldier is someone unrelated to Rebecca; if he is Kyros, then maybe be the King's Guard or something. Seems more poetic that he would take over the role of her father after the latter's death, rather than to literally be her father. Regardless, this is One Piece so I guess it still is likely that the toy soldier is her dad.
I like how this chapter feels slow (even though by most manga standards it is not) because the story is just so complex and intriguing now that any lack of forward linear progression makes it seem so. The thing about One Piece, though, is that flashbacks and history is so integral to its story that Oda-sensei kinda has no choice but to tell them; otherwise his readers are just left wondering, and we all know that Oda-sensei is perfectionist (for the initiated, Oda-sensei must be an INFP).

RE: Nardo and Bleh Thread III: Naruto is a terrible terrible manga
I don't know about you guys, i liked this bleach chapter. Ichigo fights alone now because now he is truly one with his zanpakuto. Poetic. For naruto, the only part i liked about it was sasuke's divergence from naruto's character. Everything else is just talk talk talk.
-
RE: Nardo and Bleh Thread III: Naruto is a terrible terrible manga
You guys are gonna hate me for saying this, but if you think back to right from the beginning of Bleach, everything has been consistent with this revelation thus far. It's actually quite an awesome reveal, for anyone here who still cares about bleach.

RE: Nardo and Bleh Thread III: Naruto is a terrible terrible manga
Hmm yeah I do agree with both of you. They're wayyy overdone and not to mention the other characters' reactions are pretty unnatural too. I guess they just don't do it with the same flair as in one piece, because i was pretty sure that Luffy powered up during a short span of time in the Water 7 arc too. That was done beautifully, so I'm just looking at Naruto now and wondering why i'm not feeling the same effect here, where it's also basically Naruto going all out when his comrades are in danger. It's probably just the way it's been presented to us - it's more implicit in One Piece whereas here they try to put it too much in-your-face.
-
RE: Nardo and Bleh Thread III: Naruto is a terrible terrible manga
I know we're all sick of the naruto and fairy tail frienship speeches, but doesn't one piece also have its fair share of nakama speeches too? I'm just wondering what makes it different from the others. I always thought the desire to protect someone was a powerful motivating factor for most heroes.

RE: Fairy Tail Discussion III
Mashima can be accused of many things, but I don't think laziness is one of them.
Inept? Sure. Safe? Yeah. But lazy? Probably not.
True dat. Sure he doesn't have the most original ideas, and he could do away with most of the friendship crap, but I don't think anyone should doubt the amount of effort he puts into his manga. I like some of his town backgrounds, especially.
Actually i thought this week's chapter was decent, even though it still doesn't make up for last chapter's troll. And skimped a little on backgrounds this chapter too.

RE: Chapter 631: "Gyoncord Plaza" -Discussion
WAS LUFFY DEFEATED BY JIMBE??? Ok i just asked the question that everyone had on their minds but no one dared asked. And i daresay, probably not. This is just another one of Oda's mechanisms to save Luffy for last (otherwise the arc would end prematurely if Luffy rushed Hody).
I actually enjoyed this chapter, even if the strawhats didn't appear. I liked Hody's power up, not for the way it happened, but because this arc would have been too easy otherwise. It's finally time to see Luffy actually pitting his monstrous power-up against a legitimate foe. Hody's transformation also kinda reminded me of Gon's transformation in the latest chapter of HunterXHunter, where he gained a tremendous power-up in return for accelerated aging and an early death (almost wanted to talk about how Togashi wrote himself into a wall for doing that but i realise in time that this is not the right forum for that)
and WHO IS THAT GUY TALKING TO CROCUS? (<= the question that everyone dared to ask)

RE: Chapter 630: Lashing Out
Zoro said he`ll cut them when he get his katanas back, and Luffy wasn´t even trying…
Luffy could obviously have broken out of his ropes. We don't know if Zoro can break out of his chains yet (before anyone says he needed his sword, there's still a chance that he needs that for the cage bars and not the chains). Though I will admit that if it turns out he can't and Dosun could, that will seem strange to me.
I hope so too guys. I trust Zoro to be able to get out of his chains with his katana, but was kinda hoping that he could do so without them (the katanas) too. Like, i'm pretty sure his base strength wouldn't be any less than Dosun's right?
Maybe Zoro used a different muscle group when using his katanas to slice, but i was under the impression that shonen manga (and american comics like Marvel too) aren't usually as complicated as that.
Not to mention that fishman pawn was fed with an ES pill; the very pill that allowed Hodi to capture Zoro, the very guy who knocked him out with a single slash.
This chapter actually made me like the NFP a little bit more.
Yeah I was thinking of that very scene too. Therefore it didn't really click in my head.
-
RE: Chapter 630: Lashing Out
I don't get it; a fishman pawn is able to break out of chains but Zoro and Luffy, with all their hyped up 2-year training, can't even break out of chains and ropes respectively? Really disappointing.
It was just an ok chapter for me. Last week's was much better.

RE: Chapter 628: "Cleansing" Discussion
Agreed, at first i also could not see Jimbe's logic, but after reading through the discussion i realised that it does indeed make sense (whether i agree with it is a another matter):
There are essentially 2 camps of persons: (a) fish-people who support living with humans and (b) fish-people who don't.
Important: We know that not all fishmen support living with humans because of the fact that Hodi is willing to kill all who do. Unless he really wants to just rule a kingdom that's basically his own pirate crew right from the beginning.
By Jimbe's logic:
When a human(does not actually have to be Luffy) beats Hodi, who is a hero to those in camp (b), the result is:
1. Camp (a) will not change their view, or if one insists, may even become impressed by Luffy's heroics
2. Camp (b) will become more enraged at "human interventionists"
3. Essentially this causes a much greater divide among the fishmen, and adds to the cycle of hate that already existsBut when a fishman(Jimbe) beats Hodi,
1. Camp (a) will not change their view
2. Potentially, a few members of Camp (b), especially those who respect Jimbe, might be swayed over to Camp (a). Otherwise, there is also no change to their view.
3. Potentially nothing much changes, only that Jimbe, a hero among the fishmen, makes clear his stance that humans are to be reconciled with.So in Jimbe's view, the second situation, which does not cause the fish-people from Camp (b) to go down the spiral of hatred once again, is his preferred cause of action. In the first situation of human-beating-Hodi, while it is true that some fish-people might see Luffy as a hero, the converse is true for those who already hate humans and support Hodi.
Luffy, who was sleeping throughout Jimbe's story-telling and how the fishmen have hated humans for essentially causing Fisher Tiger's death, does not give a rat's @ss and just wants to save his nakama.
Makes sense up to this point.
What i'm wondering is, isn't Luffy basically saving their King along the way? Unless fish-people from camp (b) already hate King Neptune, but i should hardly think that just because you hate fishmen means you automatically hate your King too.
Ultimately though, Jimbe recognises that the lack of change in the nuances of the fish-people is better than having their emotions swing in any direction, which may then potentially cause another spiral of hate. So probably his cause of action might still be the wiser choice. But I say, how can Fishmen Island change if one does not take gambles like these from time to time? Luffy's heroics might cause adverse reaction, or it might also cause a beneficial change in the mindset of fishmen!
Indeed a very complicated political situation we have here. Racism sucks.

RE: Literary Techniques on One Piece
Sigh…maybe if you weren't so condescending and actually had either a sense of humour or were actually up for debate you wouldn't ...sigh have had so many problems....sigh
I see. Ok then i am really sorry for sounding that way (and for "sigh-ing" so much). I am not looking down on anybody, nor do i think i am above any imaginary echelon of anybody's.
I just really thought the OP had a point. I thought One piece really was riddled with little hints and subtleties that made it such an enjoyable read. I do admit i was a little annoyed when it was brushed off simply because it might be "lost in translation". Ok, so it may not be "literary" techniques due to the lack of words (like Jerk Disease pointed out, words can be changed during translation), but perhaps they could be more like "manga" techniques that drop little messages in the back of your heads so that you can sort of anticipate what might happen next. There might not have been many, but i do think there certainly are a few.
Yeah i know i can be such a pussy at arguments, cos i don't like getting heated over something that we all enjoy reading. So i'm sorry if i sometimes by-pass arguments that seem to be headed in a certain direction. I just do not know what to say. I just thought that all that hate can be reserved for the Narutards or something
looks at my own display pic
erm, ok, not everything about naruto is bad right? there can be cool characters too!
-
RE: Literary Techniques on One Piece
sigh.. gone are the days i enjoyed my discussions on apforums. Certainly there were arguments, but none truly as fascinating as these ones these days.
I certainly hope you lead better lives outside.

RE: Literary Techniques on One Piece
Ugh should i even ask why? What the hell is up with you people that you must talk to me in such an ill manner?
-
RE: Literary Techniques on One Piece
you seem to think bad discussions turn themselves off
Where this discussion is headed, i wish it were so.
But yes, I do believe that bad discussions kill themselves eventually. The only questions being how so, and after how long.
But some good discussions die off pretty prematurely too. Sad.
-
RE: Literary Techniques on One Piece
sigh…
ok, my apologies if i sounded rude just now. I certainly didn't mean it, and i certainly don't mean to argue with anyone for a reason so small.
My only question is, what's with all the hate? It's just a topic for discussion, and what the original poster intends to do with all the replies he receives really is his own business. If he succeeds, good, but if he fails, then it's his own fault. Why try to find fault where it doesn't help anyone at all?
What I mean by "debate" is whether the techniques i claimed that Oda used really is considered a literary technique, or maybe it could be termed differently.
Stuff like " all this is pointless" never really passed as a real point in an argument... I mean, it's not that i'm saying you can't comment so, it's just i don't see why you have to convince everyone the same. Do you like, have an innate desire to see people fail right from the start? I say, let the bugger have a go if he wants to. If you don't think it'll work, just watch it fail, you don't have to have a hand in it. You'll never know if you had then not interfered, he might actually have succeeded, right?
I hope i'm making some sense here. Do feel free to point out where my thought process has gone wrong.

RE: Literary Techniques on One Piece
@JERK:
And what is literature?
So? It's a mini-effective thing that some people will pick up on.
1. This sort of thing is pretty commonplace.
2. It doesn't really have any sort of major resonance aside from ADVERSARIES LOL.
3. Why should we waste time catalouging this?See all three points above.
2,3
Are we seriously going to call "sympathy 4 character" a technique?
blah blah blah.
Look, the point of this forum is to find out what techniques are used, and not debate on whether a certain technique used is "commonplace" or "deserves to be used". I don't care if the technique is commonplace, or if it deserves to be mentioned. A technique used is still a technique used. This is just a contribution to the OP's intentions. All 3 points you mentioned are irrelevant to the topic at hand.
Seriously, is there anyone up for real intellectual debate here? Apforums is just so rife with trolls these days.
-
RE: Literary Techniques on One Piece
I was reading this thread and was surprised at the lack of actual relevance to the topic at hand. What was supposed to be "let's discuss the literary techniques" became "let's discuss why one piece should or should not be a literary piece of work".
So, i'll just write what i feel Oda has attempted with literature. Please do feel free to criticise where you feel i've made a mistake. I am no literature expert, but please bear with what i have to say.
- Let's first start with the the main antagonist of One Piece: Blackbeard. I always found that Blackbeard's introduction very interesting. At the very first instance we see him, he was at a bar, sitting right next to Monkey D. Luffy, our main protaganist. There, he and Luffy squares off in their first match: over food! BB claims that they "cherry pie tastes so good i wanna die!" while Luffy says the exact same thing, only replacing the word "good" with "bad"! The same happens with the drink, only in reverse. Here, I believe that Oda was attempting, through the use of comedy, to produce a foreshadowing of the type of man Blackbeard is going to be. His characteristic is almost parallel to that of Luffy's, with extremely opposite tastes!
That is to say, if we are to believe that Luffy is the man who will become the Pirate King, that is to say the Strongest Man in the World, then Blackbeard is foreshadowed to be the man who will achieve the same in a very different manner. We get the sensing, just from this simple scene alone, that Blackbeard is going to be Luffy's arch-nemesis in time to come. And indeed he has, if recent chapters are anything to judge by. I believe this technique is known as "Juxtaposition".
-
The way Oda uses old enemies powers, like Crocodile's Sand powers to escape, and Mr. 3's powers to evade Magellan's powers, is a form of "Irony", as common a technique as it may be.
-
"Flashforward" was used in Zoro's fight against Ryuuma, also Brooke's Shadow.
-
Oda uses "Pathos" to appealing to readers' emotions when dealing with Luffy's crisis when he loses his nakama and later on, Ace.
There are probably a bunch out there I haven't yet noticed, but these are some. As mentioned above, please feel free to dispute.
-
RE: Chapter 578 - A Present to the New Age
@Thousand:
Ugh, I can't believe people are complaining about the colour-spreads and cover pictures.
First off, you guys are lucky you get cover stories at all. In case you haven't noticed, Oda's the only one who does these. Second off, cover stories are slow as hell anyway and rather than develop the story, they're more of an excuse for Oda to let us see the side-characters he created fool around and do their thing.
And it's the exact same with the colour spreads and cover pictures except with the Straw Hats most of the time. If you actually took your time to examine them, you'd be able to appreciate the creativity, great art and great characterization that goes along with them. Let's look at the last colour-spread as an example. You have Luffy acting his all hyper self spreading his arm in happiness, you have Robin playing with a parrot on her finger, you have Brooke flailing his arms in excitement as a parrot picks on his afro, you have Zoro getting attacked by a parrot because it's Zoro XD Just one picture yet it appeals so much to the characterization and world-building and making the readers feel how human the characters Oda creates are. The role of the cover stories is really the same plus, as a bonus to, make everything feel like part of a much bigger picture. He could get rid of them like the anime did and it wouldn't make any difference at all to the story.
Quit bitching and appreciate not only the fact that Oda hasn't degraded to boring generic cool pose, make the fan-girls wet shots most other manga have degraded to and the fact that he puts so much monumental effort in the colour spreads and cover pages in the first place.
OMG QFT
I can't believe the amount of hate this thread has generated for Oda's colorspreads. I thought One Piece stood out from all the millions of other manga because of Oda's unique style, one that didn't rely on cool poses to get the drooling fan girls/boys(apparently). I guess a large fanbase has all kinds of people.
Either way, since there's no way to change your preferences, all i can say is that i'm glad that Oda doesn't think the same way as you people who believe that the colourspreads are useless. I am glad he stills concerns himself with other things in the world than mere storyline advancement.
I like the random things he draws, the expressions of his thoughts put into picture. I am glad Oda still draws them

RE: General Blackbeard Thread
One of the biggest reasons why i think Blackbeard cannot be messed with is my opinion that he is the "anti-luffy", so to speak.
On his first introduction in Jaya Island (Chapter 223, page 15), we see a paradox in the very characteristic of their nature: that they have very similar antics and yet have very different tastes! If you can't remember what , read those few chapters again and you should be able to see why.
That alone does not prove anything, but i believe it is Oda's way of foreshadowing the very nature of the introduced character; that if luffy is to be the main protagonist in the story, that man would very likely be its antagonist. I don't know about everyone, but i believe several of you must have thought something like that we first see Luffy arguing with BB over drinks and cherry pies. Believe me when i say that you weren't being a psychic then; it was just one of Oda's creative and yet very sublime ways to hint the nature of a newly-introduced character. I'd say it was more likely that you were being very receptive.
Anyway, before i digress further, if we are to believe that Luffy will eventually gain ground to become the Pirate King, and maybe even the Strongest Man in the World, then we should also, by seeing the parallel between the nature of Blackbeard and that of Luffy, see that BB will also reach very similar heights, albeit by their differences, will do so in very different ways.
Of course, the same way Luffy isn't the strongest now, one might argue that Blackbeard may not have also as yet reached the height of his power. But, if someone like him, having a nature similar to Luffy's, giving Shanks pause (and a scar to boot), making Whitebeard feel uneasy (about ace tracking him down) and collecting world-class criminals under his banner, says things like "this is.. MY AGE", you'd better believe him.
Anyway if my point wasn't relevant to the argument all the while, then I shall just state my stand clearly: I believe that Blackbeard, with 2 of the most dangerous fruits in hand (literally), is now already stronger than Whitebeard ever was. Anyone who disagrees can just throw a cherry-cream cupcake at me.

RE: Chapter 524 "No One Can Stop This Now" Discussion
Regarding the issue about which side's gonna win eventually, I thought it was pretty obvious the outcome of the battle when the last panel featured Ace crying. And nah, i don't think he was weeping for the fate of the marines.

RE: General 'Haki' Discussion

RE: The true blue way of beating a Logia-type - the Breath of all things
Wow I'm sorry that I'm trying to revive such an old topic, but it seems that the latest development in One Piece has given this old theory of mine some food for thought!
We see Rayleigh being able to hit Kizaru. Now his sword cuts his skin. Looks like Oda didn't give up on the idea of the "breath" of things after all.
I'm sorry I know there's another similar topic, but I thought I might as well bring back up my old thread since it didn't manage to finish last time
-
RE: How popular is one piece?
^ lol try saying that in a naruto forum haha.
Though I agree immensely! A lot of friends i know prefer naruto simply because they wouldn't give one piece a chance. They give me answers like "the characters look too kiddy" and "i don't like the storyline (even though he's only watched the first 15 episodes!)" and stuff like that.
Naruto is advantaged with good introduction of its storyline and a vastly different concept: a more modern aged ninja against the characteristic highly disciplined trained assassin prevalent in other stories. But its story seems to be dying off somewhat (though it has started to pick up again, imo). One Piece doesn't give a very good first impression, but its story just keeps getting better and better. And even now it's one of the best, and it's still getting better. Kudos to One Piece!
-
RE: Chapter 511 "Sentoumaru and his Broadaxe" Discussion
Cool stuff! So there IS a way to fight Logia.
Anyway i think the reason why the strawhats are so tired is that they've already gone up against 2 x pacifista. The first one being defeated in chap 509, the 2nd in chap 510. 'Cos I noticed that the translation reads "This guy's (pacifista) got beams instead of claws on his hands as well! Not that I wanna think about it but.. that means this is a third one!" (from chap 511, pg 9).
I initially thought they fought and defeated only 1 pacisfista, and wondered why they tired out so quickly too, but this statement seems to suggest that the SH fought against 2 pacisfista actually.
dammit one piece is always getting better and better.
-
RE: Kizaru's devil fruit?
Haha aww c'mon, we aren't really going to go into all the physics right?
Because, in this context, Oda really simplified physics to a huge extent. So much so that, I'd rather not argue in physics terms at all, and just enjoy the whole thing.
First of all, to argue some disputed points:
Light CAN hurt you. The "light" we are used to seeing everyday isn't very harmful because it is kind of more "dispersed". If it gets really concentrated, like in case of a laser, it can give you really bad sun burns and in a more extreme case, cut you like they do in one of those star wars movies.
It wouldn't be so bad if Kizaru's "light" was only of a single frequency. If Kizaru can manipulate his powers to give different frequencies of light, he can potentially make a "light beam" that is out of the range of what the human eye can detect, and he can thus killing you without you ever seeing what's he doing. Which can also essentially turn him into an "invisible man".
Anyway, if Kizaru could move at the speed of light, then assuming that Einstein's theory of relativity is correct, and assuming that he has any finite amount of human reaction time, then Kizaru would be reaching the ends of the universe each time he tries to move at the speed of light. That's because whenever he moves at such a high speed, the distance between the ends of the universe grows to become infinitely short. As long as he has any human reaction time error at all, even to the smallest fraction of a second, the amount of time taken to reach from one end of the universe to the other is essentially nil, i.e. nothing i.e. no time at all. When he does get to the end othe universe, I wouldn't have any idea how you would be able to get back.
And if he doesn't have any human reaction time error, then I'd say he'd be t he strongest man in the world, no, in the universe, because nothing will ever be able to stop him. But he's not, so he does have a human reaction time error.
If you get any of the sh*t i just wrote, you'd be agreeing with me that it's useless to argue physics at all in Oda's world. Let's just enjoy the manga while it's there.
And ponder the marvels of incomprehensible physics at the same time. Life is just that complicated, even if you don't want it to be. -
RE: Raftel's Seal, the Void Century, and the Will of D
Whoever say that Shanks was after One Piece anyway? I've only known all this time that Shanks is one of the emperors and that on occasion you can find him hanging around in the latter half of the Grand line, but i don't remember anyone ever mentioning that Shanks was seeking One Piece to become the Pirate King. If you're going to tell me "oh come on, it's so OBVIOUS that he is, after all who doesn't wanna be the PK huh?" then i'm telling you now that it is NOT obvious.
We can already gather from what the one of the 5 elder stars said ("Shanks is not the type to make rash moves by himself") that Shanks has a laid back character. His ultimate aim may not actually be to become Pirate King. I'm not saying that it definitely isn't, but well, we can't confirm anything unless it's been officially said. Maybe he's like Roger, someone who isn't in the pirate business just for the title, but for the thrill and fun of being one.
Anyway my point is that Shanks not seeking One Piece is a possible reason why it hasn't already been found by him, and not that he doesn't know how to get it.

RE: Is Zoro the First Mate?
Erm i have One Piece Yellow, (though it's in chinese and so it'll take me a long time to finish it) and i don't think it was stated anywhere that Dragon's bounty was >300million, even though we can safely assume that he is, and it only stated Zoro as being the "swordsman" and a "combatant". I don't remember seeing anything close to a "first mate" while reading up on Zoro. So unless i missed out that part (please direct me to the appropriate page and section if i am wrong), anyone who uses the yellow data book to "confirm" that Zoro is first mate is wrong.
Oh, and Whitebeard does have a 1600 man crew, divided into 16 divisions. And Aokiji IS the strongest in the entire Marines force, Sengoku included. The reason why Sengoku has his position is that he is extremely loyal to the government, and is very obedient to their command. But Aokiji is still strongest because of his fruit ability. Yeah just something a little extra. Oh and Diablo 3 is coming out, all you geeks out there (myself included:) Sorry for the off-topic-ness
