It would not be just caring for Luffy, as Kaido would be part of the equation as well. Blackbeard is also a character that will get competitive about pies, like shown in Mock Town.

For me what fits the most is how opportunistic Blackbeard is, and it would seem out of character that if he figures whom Luffy's target is, he would not try to capitalize on it. I would also assume that in his calculations, he might not expect Luffy to beat Kaido, but has the trust that he will upset Kaido's power structure enough for it to be easier for Blackbeard to deal with.

being competitive doesn't mean he would attack every newcomer . Only thing he would go for Wano is to get the DF power from people there , but definitely not because he's thinking "luffy not ready for yonkou" . He didn't care about that
