Well, if my memory is correct, the explanation for whitebeard was along the lines of "some people grow bigger and stronger than others", as in there was nothing special about him being almost 4m tall. In One piece, some people are born monsters for no reason.

That's if you consider that vinsmokes are reasonnable people. They might not like him getting things clear to luffy. They could have one of Zeff's arms chopped off and delivered just cause sanji tried to play it clever.
