RE: Chapter 601: "Romance Dawn for the New World" Discussion
My apologies to all who don't can't appreciate the amount of detail Oda applies when designing the various abilities used in One Piece, but I wanted to chime in regarding the potential partial body Gear 2 mechanism. Here are some of the more interesting posts on the matter thus far: While I agree completely about the ramifications of partial Gear 2, I don't think that a haki explanation is necessary, save for that the mental training required to hone haki has allowed Luffy greater control over his other abilities. It is my interpretation that this is just a predictable extension of Gear 2 that allows for faster enhancement with less stamina drain.
Oda hasn't ignored what he said at all. Let's start with a recap: Gear 2 had previously functioned by using the legs as a primer pump to increase blood circulation through out the body. Luffy's rubber body compensates for the increased blood pressure this causes, while the faster oxygen transfer enables luffy's cells to avoid resorting to anaerobic respiration while he overexerts his muscles. This leads to increased heat (red glow) and CO2 production (smokey mist) as byproducts.
I'll explain why partial gear 2 is coherent with with this explanation next.
The "more blood per second" theory works like this: Luffy no longer uses his legs as the pump for Gear 2. If you look at the bottom center panel on page 13 of the chapter, you'll notice two "throb lines" right in front of luffy's chest as he activates the partial gear two without any substantial leg movement. I posit that this shows that luffy is now using the body's natural pump, the heart, as his Gear 2 primer. By expanding and contracting his heart using his gomu gomu abilities, Luffy should be able to enter into Gear 2 much more efficiently than previously. Also, the major arteries that lead to various body parts all lead out from the heart, as can be seen from this picture: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Circulatory_System_en.svg
So given that the heart is now the pump for Gear 2, the mechanism for partial body Gear 2 should be easy to understand. Luffy gomu pumps his heart leading to greatly increased circulatory blood pressure. He then dilates his left subclavian artery while keeping the other major arteries constricted. This leads to all the increased blood pressure being directed to his left arm, which then returns to the heart along the subclavian vein directly to he heart, creating a closed system pump and allowing for the Gear 2 effect to be localized.
I think this explanation is logically consistent given the rules of the OP universe and answers any lingering questions about partial body Gear 2.
This would also mean that luffy has much more percise control over his devil fruit powers meaning there is a high probability that he has fixed the mistakes in 3rd gear and leaves a large amount of possibilites for new techniques or gears that he has come up with xD its going to be awesome i cant wait
i dont really know because i have only be reading OP for less than a year but if Oda really thinks this far into it im a lot more impressed with the whole thing -
