Last month I donated blood for the first time in my school, and a few days ago I received my donor card in the mail, so I got the idea for this thread. So are there any other doners here?

Heh, when I donated blood, everything went well until the very end. The needle didn't hurt (but it did when they took a sample for testing), and I talked to the woman taking my blood most of the time. When the blood bag was full and the needle was taken out, I suddenly felt very weak and dizzy. Took about a minute to get back to normal (breathing into a paper bag really does work). I'm considering donating again.

      Tch, why do I think someone will post a bad Zoro joke? >.>;

Well, this is hard to answer. I went to donate blood once, but the lady who put the needle in my arm screwed up and hit a nerve or something and I was in excruciating pain and it had to be stopped. I'd kind of like to try again but after that experience I'm a little wary.

I think I'll faint if I donate my blood… not healthy enough

Ouch, reminds me of what apparently happened to this one girl at my school. The accidentally stuck the needle all the way through her vain. x_x

Ouch  I really don't know what they did to me, all I know is that it didn't seem right.
I'm also a little concerned about my own blood, my blood pressure tends to be on the low side and I've been anemic in the past. I passed the anemia test they give you before you give blood though so I guess I'm not anymore.

Naah, never done it and don't plan to. I've got crappy circulation, I need all the blood I can get.

The average human circulatory system contains 12 pints of blood. Blood donations extract 1 pint of blood.

Just the math of the process seems painful and unhealthy. Plus, huge needles scare the shit out of me.

No, but that's because I'm not old enough to give blood yet. I will do when I'm old enough though, cause hey, might make a difference to someone. I don't like needles though Shudder

It should be a healthy thing to do actually. Body will produce new young blool cells to replace your old worn-out cells which you just lost.

I've done it before, I'd gladly do it again 😁

The first time I did it, I think it was my senior year of highschool… It didn't hurt that bad.... but when the lady took out the needle, I passed out! It was awesome... They were all worried, I just sorta laughed and then went on my way after drinking some juice and eating some oreos...

Um.. the second time around, I think was last year when I was still with that bastard ex-husband of mine... Only that time, I didn't pass out at all. It was a blood drive for the church I was going to so...

I'm intensely needle-phobic (in fact I can't even read the posts in this thread without starting to feel panicky), and while physically there's nothing impeding me from doing so, I figure it's easiest on both me and the people around me if I don't.

If you spoiler me, I will eat you with tater tots.

Giving blood isn't unhealthy for a healthy individual. You replenish your blood very quickly. My boyfriend gives blood frequently and he suffers no effects from it at all.

But the point of giving blood is to save lives, and nothing else. If you're healthy enough to do it, than do it. Someone in need of a blood transfusion may be thanking you.

I would donate blood but right now I think I'm too young to do that so I'll probably do it when I get a car.

                                Plus I'm lazy.

Sadly I can not donate blood for the fact that I love tattoos and I was told that a person has to wait for one year before giving blood after getting tattoos.

Other then that I would not mind giving blood though. It helps out a lot of less fortunate people.

In 11th grade this group of people came around and asked us if anyone wanted to donate blood. I considered it for a second since I was old enough, but then decided it was too much work to bother with.

Done it twice, once when I was 16 and one when I was 17. Planning on doing it in a couple weeks. I'm gonna try doing it once a year.

I've donated blood a couple of times so far. First time was when I was in High School, when I was 17. Never had a problem giving blood. I am far more afriad of the prick they give you on your finger than the actual needle. That seems to hurt more to me. I have donated (don't know if that is donated, as they pay you) Plasma a couple of times too. First time, when I first went to college and was low on money. When you donate Plasma, the take the blood out of you, spin it to remove the plasma from the red blood cells, then they put the red cells back in. It goes in rounds. I was fine till the third round. I remember the tech guy coming over and asking if I was ok, and I said yeah. Then by the time he turned around and walked to my feet, I got tunnel vision. I told him I didn't feel really good. They said I was really white, and my pulse was so low you could hardley feel it. Needless to say I didn't go back there again, and it was 3 or 4 more years before I did that againl. Next time I had no problems.

I donate blood when I can and when it's easy; basically when there's a Bloodmobile nearby. I like to do it, but I'm not going horribly out of the way to do so; without a car, almost anything is horribly out of the way, though.

But I'm the universal donor (O negative) so I figure it does a lot of good if I donate.

What does it mean to be positive or negative anyway? It worries me a little (but that's just standard paranoia I guess).

I donated blood last year. Everything went fine except for the scar i still have from the needle. I mean, wtf? what kind of botch job was that. It doesnt even take any work or anything, so it is easy as hell.

But the point of giving blood is to save lives, and nothing else. If you're healthy enough to do it, than do it. Someone in need of a blood transfusion may be thanking you.

This may not have even been directed at me, but I have the guilt, so I'll reply anyway. ^^; It's something I'm sure I'll do at some point, and I do have the desire to, but honestly, it's something I'm going to have to work up to. I've had a number of blood tests for medical problems this last year and I've gotten a bit better (I haven't tried to hit/climb over/run screaming from the nurse lately), but I still get hysterical and hyperventillate and cry and jerk away from them when they get near me with the needle, and the idea of having something in my arm long enough to give an entire bag triggers my panic response just thinking about it. So yeah, I'll probably do it when I feel more secure about it, but right now I really don't think I could handle it.

If you spoiler me, I will eat you with tater tots.

Oh not to worry, I wasnt' trying to guilt trip anyone into doing it or anything. XD I can understand people being anxious about it. Needles are some people's enemies. Like I said, I tried doing it once, had a bad experience so I'm a little anxious about trying it again, although I still would like to. I just was trying to say that it was healthy and a positive thing to do for most people.

I will donate blood, organs and other things as much as possible but I'm going to have to wait around 7 years or so. I want to keep both my kidneys though but after I'm dead, people can take them. Unless someone really important needed it.

I'm not scared of needles, I think of the scars as nothing to worry about. I got three on my right knee and no one ever sees my knees so I don't care.

My mum told me when she went to donate blood. She has a rare blood type and when she got there, the people were fighting over who gets her.

I would go in, drop off a pint of blood, rush home, smoke a blunt and have a few beers, and be all sorts of loopy. It was great. Disclaimer: I do not recommend anybody else do this, but if you do, enjoy!

Yeah I have the same blood typw as you, my first time donating blood the lady miss my vine in one arm, then they got it right in the the other arm.

I haven't donated since but I probably will eventually.

I even put that lil organ donor sticker on my driver's license. I've never had any bad experiences giving blood, though I have seen a people pass out or get really nervous.

Although, just yesterday I got taken to the hospital in an ambulance, and when they wanted to take blood from me to test, it took a few tries… They found my veins alright, but I couldn't get enough blood to fill any of those vials for some reason... I have a few holes in my elbow-pit now from the multiple attempts... nothing that won't heal up right away...

I'm pretty sure that just means that if you happen to die, doctors can extract organs for transplants and the like. That's a lot less creepy, I think, than shoving a big needle into a living person and taking a pint of liquid out of them.
