It seems like my connection is getting worse and worse. Web pages take a long time to load a lot of the time, and I keep getting connection timed out messages…it's not the wireless signal, I check that and it's usually very good or excellent. I thought maybe the windows firewall might be causing a problem, but turning if off didn't help. Does anyone have any advice?
I wonder if the router might just be bad. My niece's dad bought it at a garage sale. I tried updating the firmware, and it keeps saying it's not compatible.
Slow wi-fi connection :(

YOu know It would help if you told us what type of router it was.

Mine used to go really slow as well. I then found out it was my tv that was causing it to go slow.(router was on top of it). So whenever the tv was on my internet was really slow, i moved it a few metres and it was ok.
But in your case sounds more like a dodgy router

Mine started doing that as well.
I, er, "enhanced" the antenna on my network adapter.
Ahahaa!
It has a foot-long tinfoil antenna and it works wonderfully.

It's a D-Link DI-614+. Does that help?
It could be a problem with one of the cables. I looked at the host computer and noticed that the connection keeps connecting and disconnecting, althought the overall speed seems much better (Haven't tried downloading on that computer yet). Even the pageloads on my computer are slow. Torrents won't go faster than 20 kbs but direct downloads seem to go fast enough. At least some. It's strange.
OK there's definately a problem between the host comp and mine…I just ran a speed test on speakeasy.com. Host computer download speed: 2348 kbps. My computer 73 kbps o_O wth is going on? Last I checked, it was 215 or so, it keeps going down and down.

Host computer?
You might have an odd network layout.
I know with the common cable and DSL offerings here, you can wire the cable box (via Ethernet) directly to the router, and then all PCs connect to the network through the router, either by 802.11 or Ethernet.
Do you have a service which requires you to log on or run a special programme to activate the connection? Or is it all done inside the modem unit?
If nothing else, removing the need for a "host computer" could reduce the load on that system and remove potential conflicts or complications.

What I mean by host computer sounds pretty much the way you're describing. There are two computers: One is connected directly from the DSL modem to router and to the ethernet card. My computer is not connected at all, as it is a wireless modem/ethernet card. (802.11)

I had to connect to the default gateway, http://192.168.0.1 and run a wizard that connected the computer. First I was using a regular wired connection and it seemed to be fine. The problem started with the wireless router. But it seemed to be fine with the wireless router at first too.

Tried to update firmware: wouldn't work.
Talked to D-link tech support, they were unable to help with updating the firmware or solving the slow connection. They told me to change the channel and a couple of settings. At first my connection went up to 714 kbps and I thought it was better, but then it dipped right back down to where it was before again.I notice the router keeps rebooting itself.
I also downloaded a program called networkmagic that allowed me to discover that someone was tapping into my router. I blocked the intruder, but there isn't much I can do to prevent it. That wasn't related to my problem though.EDIT:
OK here's the happy ending…at least I hope.
I decided to go out and get a new router - I got the D-link DI-624. So far, everything works absolutely perfect. Only thing is I don't know how to reconfigure my settings for WEP. I can't get my comp to work with it enabled. But that isn't a really big deal.
Next time don't accept garage sale routers.
