Need some good sources for the work I´m writing for uni!

Hello there. I need a bit help for one of the two works I´m writing currently for my uni. Experience has shown me that it gets misunderstood if I say directly what I want so don´t mind me for explaining what I´m needing it for first.

I´m writing a work about sport being the cultural domestication (sp?) of fighting while focusing on the topic of fan songs (like you see them in Soccer or Icehockey) being the modern version of battle songs. The presentation I held was ok, but the written elaboration needs to be a bit more extended and here I need help.

The chapter I have problems with is called "Gruppengesang" which can be translated as group song. Next to the theories I want to elaborate in this chapter, what I want to do is to talk about the following types of songs:

Battle songs (such as which soldiers/warriors sang before they went into war)
Religion songs (such as the modern gospel songs but much earlier)
Slave songs (such as slaves on fields were singing or just the rythmic rowing on roman galleons)
Revolutionarist songs (self explenatory)
Tribe songs/dances

What I need is simply sources (preferably online) that show examples of these five types of songs. No scientific elaborations just the examples.

The reason why I need that is simple. If I for instance say "the slaves on roman galleons were rowing to rhythmic drum beats" then the Prof. will ask me where I got that from, to which I will say that it is common knowledge, to which he will say that if I don´t give a reliable source everything means shit.

Finding these sources is really a pain in the ass for me because I appear to be a bit cursed on that field. The part of the library at my uni that could have that information is under reconstruction which means I have no access to it. And if I google online then I find thousand of pages that contain my keywords but have nothing to do with what I need.

So my only hope was to switch the language and possibly find sources here. But since I´m not that good with english as with german I´m not sure if I got the words right. I´m not sure if battle songs is the proper translation for "Schlachtgesang" respectively if it really means the same. The same counts for the other terms. Furthermore I´m affraid that if I was that unlucky to find something in one of my maternal languages then how high are the chances of finding it in a foreign language, especially if I suck badly with online searching. So I was hoping that someone here might be an expert on that field and could direct to some reliable sources. Reliable is the keyword here because I found dozens of forum posts online that mention on or the other example I´m looking for but if I list that as a source in a scientific work my Prof. is gonna kick my ass.

So I´m really hoping for help here. Would mean much to me. Anyway thanks for reading.

how about this, what are the acceptable forms of sources? because it seems anything and everything is okay for this project. I know for my research papers i need to have scholarly sources that have been published and what not. Also, i dont know what kind of access your school gives you online for some of the more academic research sites. I mean, i know i could find you some information on slave songs (at least the kind of the pre-civil war era in the US) but they arent really the kind of songs your looking for. They were for getting a hidden message across alot of the times because they couldnt express themselves freely or they were for helping deal with the stress brought on by the horrible conditions that they lived in.

I guess what i am trying to say is that i dont know how much help i can be but i am willing to help you out

Well as reliable sounds even online new article would count. And informative pages like Wikipedia. Stuff like that.

What doesn´t count as reliable source is forums like this one. If this matter would be discussed here by the members then I couldn´t use anything as source because it´s just opinion rather then something that is written down in a book, mag or article that goes on sale.

don't believe my historical knowledge (i know it from reading zola), but i bet you can find some good infos pretty easily on it with just googling it or wikipedia.

EDIT: i don't know if it might count, but in the "illiade" of homere (you know, the stuff with the war of troie, achilleus and all…), the warriors like to sing "battle songs" when they go at war. maybe you can explore this path with some googling.

that's only hints, but it's better than nothing, right?

Thanks igalsfy, that´s exactly what I need. Funnily enough it was also another french song I had on the field of revolutionist songs, which would be the "L´Internationale". Very revolutionistic people you french guys. If it wouldn´t be for the family connection revelation I´d bevieve Dragon is french.

Yeah, once I can pin something down it is easier to google or wiki it. But with general words it is rather difficult to find something. At least I was incompetent to accomplish it.

That is far better then what I had. A hint is something that can be followed. General terms as "battle songs" in german lead you to a shitload of pages with all the wrong content. But with the reference to Homere it is far less vague and could be found out more easily.

So yep, thanks for the info. If you have more hints about the other three kinds of songs. Don´t hesitate to share. Thanks for what you´ve done so far.

I automaticly thought of Onward Christain Soldier. They use that song several times in Little House on the Praire.
