! this is the query that's on my mind. we all knew it'd be him, or most of us did. but is he actually the best possible addition from the current arc or was there better available?
Keep the damn spoilers in the spoiler board.

Frrrranky…. INVINCIBLE!
While, I like Kaku more than Franky; Franky is easily the best choice of crewmate. After all, he IS super~.
I wanted Kaku. xP but then he was from CP9 so I ewas like, franky is the oonly character crazy enough to join.
Of all the possible shipwrights for the Straw Hats, I think only Iceburg, Franky and Paulie were really fleshed out enough as characters to join (apart from the CP9, of course). I actually liked Paulie better from the start, but I don't have a problem with Franky. It would just be weird having Paulie joining now, after all the things that happened.
Yes he is…
Pauli was lame
Kaku was a damn girafe and we already have a long-nose
and the rest is weak
yea franky is prob the best addition
but the way kaku was introduced made it seem sorta like he would join (before all the cp9 stuff) with all the mountain wind stuff and showing his crazy jumping skills, but iunno maybe thats just me
Yeah, Kaku would of been a better choice. He seemed to be a good guy overall.
I would of rather have a new member that is zoro and sanji level and not chopper level like Franky SEEMS to be.
Franky may be stronger, but he hasnt shown it yet.

those skills really ended up going to waste didn't they.
Chopper level? I don't think Franky is at Chopper level. During the W7 arc, he was at least able to hold his own and fight Luffy and then defeating a CP9 member. You can say that its only cause of his cyborg body but who's the one who created his body, think about that.
Think about it in a writer's standpoint. All the strawhats are unique because no matter what direction the story has their combat style and personality styles always have room for expansion. Iceberg had little to no combat skills. Paulie had alot of potential but in the end he ends up being a pallate swapped version of Luffy more or less. Franky has a cyborg body which can be endlessly upgraded and expanded. The choice for Oda to have a new versailte muigwara was clear from the start.
Kaku is a plain character. Good design and he seemed interesting at first but there's nothing special about him.
Pauly has a perfect appeal for what an avarage OP reader wants but luckily Oda isn't playing it safe.
And those two are the only worthy "competitors".
Franky is probably the best character to ever come from Oda's mind. So, uh… yes, he is the best possible addition.
Paulie was weak.
Kaku was a CP9 and was faithful to the group and would not betray it to join the mugiwaras, Usopp already has his features also.
But Franky, well…I'll just say this-
SUUUUUPAAAAA~!!!
chopper level ? Oh i guess that's why franky was with luffy and sanji able to break through the tekkai with their first hit during the eneas lobby battle, the power of their hit were so strong that even with tekkai the cp9 could feel the hit , when chopper hit kumadori it doesn't made him flinch and instead of kumadori that was chopper who felt the pain , pretty pitiful if you ask me . To destroy the tekkai he need a desperate move to do so and after that kumadori totally destroyed him and again he need to use a more desperate move to beat kumadori .
franky is not chopper level at all , he is sanji level the only real difference is that franky has a normal speed where sanji , zoro and luffy have super speed .
And on topic , yes i think that franky is a great addition to the crew, because they need more strong fighters if they want to survive in the New World .
Of course.
I still don't get what made Pauley a liable crewmate.
Of course.
I still don't get what made Pauley a liable crewmate.
Because Paulie was a comedic foil to Sanji. His attitude toward women made him great when paired with someone that's completely on the opposite end of the spectrum.
And Paulie could fight. He did cut up Baskerville and quite a few marines on the island. Plus, he was the lead shipwright of Galley-La.
Still, the FFVII Cid wannabe pales in comparison to Franky, whose overall ability is very impressive. Plus, Franky has limitless potential for upgrades, with dials, new technology, etc.
Of course Franky was the best addition, because a lot of the arc was spent enmeshing him into the crew. Also, I think Franky has way more room to grow as a character than Paulie, making him the much better choice in the long term. I'm just curious of Oda was intentional in making Paulie look like a potential crewmate in the early going.
those skills really ended up going to waste didn't they.
Wasn´t that whole skill just a camouflage for him using Geppou openly without anybody realising what was actually going on? Just the same as Rucchi used Shigan when Pauly threw him around without anybody reconsidering that it might be a martial arts skill from WG killers? So actually the skill didn´t go to waste because Kaku pretty much as everybody else used a solid amount of Rokushiki moves in his fight.
To get back to the original question. IMO Franky is by far one of the best good characters in the entire manga. I simply can´t believe how much I catch myself think "Franky is soooo One Piece" when the manga actually lived practically over 300 chapters without him. I a character makes me think of him like that though he entered the story so late then you can guess easily what my stance about him being the best possible addition.
Not all Tekki are the same. Everyone underestimates poor chopper.
At first I expected Kaku - I mean, everyone already thought that he was Usopp, the tradeoff wouldn't be all that noticeable for the crew. Haa.
I never really expected Paulie to join, even though I really like him and Iceberg. The way he clings to Iceberg, though, it would pretty much have to be both or none, I figure. Iceberg seems to be pretty well stuck in his position overseeing the Galley-La company.
Then again… Franky has the Square Sisters and the rest of the 'Franky Family' to look after...
It's a tough call.
It could only be Franky.
Franky…..great
can't wait for next chapter
Paulie was a good temporary contra to sanji but I think on the long run it would've gotten boring. Also Sanji already has his "opponent" in the crew and another would not be good. I like Paulie but Franky has something Paulie has not…......... he's SUUUUPAAA
^^ just kidding although he actually is, with his background and all he definitly was the best addition.
Way back during the scene in the Galley-La HQ when Luffy pulled Paulie over to him, I figured we had our new crewmwmber. I figured Paulie's personality would be a good foil to Sanji's and I rather like his rope moves. But ever since then, Franky had become more and more central to the W7/EL plot, and he has really grown on me. I must admit that at this point I would much rather have Franky on the crew than any other W7 character.
Franky always struck my as kinda annoying. He is too loud and strange without having any unique personality traits. Paulie had a gambling addiction and insert whatever the thing with women was called and it just seems to me like there could be some nice running gags with that.
As for Franky's fighting, he struggled with Nero, the bitch member of cp9, so its not like he is out of this world strong. I hope his future battles follow Ussop's path, he just pulls out weird/strange/funny new tricks every fight for comedic relief, rarely having serious fights.
Paulie had potential to become a rather entertaining fighter. His rope is basicly like fighting with a whip, which would be unique to the one piece world so far (unless i missed someone:) ) and would be liimited by pretty much only odas imagination.
For me the best member would be someone not introduced yet. While the ship was being build a short miniarc where they discover another young(!) character, preferable with no fighting skills, cause more fighters just drags out arc finales, who happens to be a genius shipfixeruper with a burning desire to, idk, fix every ship in the world :p. But eh, what are ya gonna do, its a story for kids, the robot had to stay shrugs
Franky hardly struggled with Nero, no more than Sanji struggled with Wanze, who was even lower.
Paulies quirks would have gotten exceedingly boring very quickly there were two of them (gambling, and his prudedishness) and anyone her could probably list the gags off the top of thier head before thaey happend on the ship.
But eh, what are ya gonna do, its a story for kids, the robot had to stay shrugs
*is the history of Oda, the Robot remains
Well, when i first saw the galley-la company guys, i was thinking that pauly was going to be the shipwright, but the thing with the pigeon was bothering me (i had thought that lucci was going to be a mugiwara ). But then franky and the cp9 was revealed , so i discarded the pigeon and pauly.
I could see why people would think Paulie would join… At first. For one, he had a very unique design and fighting stlye. Two, he was Sanji's polar opposite and a gambler. But then, once Franky was shown, I have no idea how people could think Paulie would join over him. ESPECIALLY at Enies Lobby. Did people seriously think Franky would say "Well, I just helped you save Robin, bye!"?
From the second Franky was shown with such a unique design, it was way too obvious he would join.
blue hair! that's what make him the best person to join the team!
blue hair! that's what make him the best person to join the team!
Just like Iceberg, Sarquiss, Vivi, Buggy…
Someone else said this about Kaku:
good villain but boring good guy.
Paulie knew himself he was too weak so.. Franky is the best.
(I secretly hoped for Lucchi to join, before I knew he was villain too..)

And here I always thought just the opposite. Kaku was much more vibrant and full of life as neutral-good, plus it added to the mystery of his diving off of buildings when it was exclusive to him and unexplained.
Kaku was boring period.

Exactly how I felt about the new crew member thing. At first I was pretty sure it was going to be Paulie and didn't even consider Franky. Paulie had the gambling thing, and he had that moment in the mansion where he seemed to connect with Luffy, so I thought for sure he would join. But then they actually started to flesh out who Franky was and show us his history, how he fights, his strengths and weaknesses, and how he has a connection with both Usopp and Robin. Pretty much after Franky had his flashback I think it should've become obvious he would be the person to join. And besides it just being obvious that Franky would be the one to join, he seemed to be the most appropriate. He has fantastic skills as a shipwright, a dream that fits in with the goals of the Strawhats, good fighting sills, and a personality that fits with the rest of the crew really well.
I guess if it wasn't going to be Franky, it could've been Paulie, but he became a background character so fast it would just feel wrong.

Well that's true. He was best at the beginning, when he was just one of the shipwrights.
He wasn't as interesting as villain, and being a goodie he would have been… boring.
Exactly. I think Kaku was better off staying neutral, just as one of those neat characters who pops up once or on occasion.
The diving off the roof scene was memorable enough that it could have been left at that and he'd have still been at least mildly interesting.
Well…......i say they could have used another fe-male crewmember like Califa along with Franky but then califa was cp9 so i didnt work out

My thoughts exactly. Sure in my opinion it would be great if both joined, but it's unlikely.
You know, the more I follow this thread the more it appears as it becomes something "remember the good old days when we were guessing who the shipwright will be?" thread. It probably is just me.
Ignoring what everyone else has said, I'm still in denial about Franky. I just don't like him that much. I honestly thought that he'd be TOO MUCH for the Strawhats. I mean, the Strawhats are a loud, boisterous bunch. But, Franky seems way too loud. He also seems way too out there. Just TOO flashy and TOO noisy. Honestly, if he were to join a pirate crew (any one at all), I'd say Buggy's. Since Buggy is a flashy, loud, moron. O_o; They'd fit together like…like...two things that fit together.
Someone more simple, but still knows how to have a good time would be better. Not someone who will be trying to scream louder than his captain. I mean, he's got all the qualities that could match the Strawhats, but it's...it's....just not right. Besides~ I hate his speedos. He needs a pair of pants! Real ones! That cover the legs! And if I have to see his naked, hairy, scrawny, ugly ass again, I'll shoot the nearest, cutest, innocentest puppydog! YA KNOW! The one with the BIG, watery eyes! And the sweetest little whine?! :P
Franky knows two different guitar chords, thus he should make an ample addition as not just a shipwright.
I want Lucchi to join the strawhats!
ok joking, Franky is best, and it's not even close.
the good part with Franky, is that he is the opposite of robin, where she is not enough, he is too much like you said !!
It is a good complement and I am sure he will fit quite well in the crew :p

Dear lord, it's like we've got the opposite of Paulie over here.
I think that when the Straw Hats first started thinking about getting a shipwright before the Davy Back Fight, Oda had decided to create a character to throw us off on who would join the crew as the shipwright, so Paulie was introduced first, we all automatically thought he'd join the crew, not the later revealed "arc villian", Franky.
I didn't even suspect it'd be Franky until his conversation with Usopp.
@Roz:

Should I post a pic of me wearing speedos? Probably not though, it would give the guy a heart attack.
The speedo was creepy at first, but I got over it. And even though Franky's ass has scarred me for life, I will get over it.
Also. I did not like Kaku.
So, yes, Franky's the best choice.
He is a freaking CYBORG powered by Coca cola. Of course he would be the next crewmate…come paulie nor kaku have nothing on a cyborg. And Oda is known for his outliers. He makes someone who almost dissloved the SH join the crew. Tht is why he is Oda
For power reasons, I think Franky is probably best. He's powerful, but also has flaws and weaknesses (like his back) that can make his fights more interesting to read about.
For personality… I dunno. I liked Kaku a lot, but I don't think he was ever an option. Franky seems loud to me, but once they set sail, I think he'll find his 'place' in the crew. Though he'll be the first Strawhat pirate who was the leader of a group before joining... I wonder if that'll affect his interactions with the others. Hm.
For my own personal favorite... I know there was never a chance, but I wish Iceberg could come with them! He was my favorite character in this arc. His 'funny' moments are more to my sense of humor than Franky's, and I love his mousey. And his nma. Ice-ossan! I'll miss you! At least it was one of Tom's Workers...
