Blue Dragon manga
-
-
Just a note that there is another Blue Dragon series on Monthly Shounen Jump.
-
Ok, what is going on with the first image? Just rape time in this manga series for the loser?
-
With the Japanese that I know…
I think she's telling the guards to wait because that kid is either blind or sick or something....
Or she's saying that this sort of thing isn't unhealthy for a child...
I'm not sure, I gotta get back into studying the language, can somebody help me out here?
-

That doesn't make any sense…
And I assume the scans were taken out of context so we'll have to wait to understand what they mean.
-
Those images were freaky…................
BTW is it me or does the art resemble that of the one who did Death Note? -
@Freeman-12:

Well if the series is based on a game, then whoever loses the game would get sexually attacked, that is what I was trying to say, but true. The pictures could be out of order, so my theory of rape time is wrong.
-
^Is posting manga scans with semi-nudity really OK in the forums?

I hardly doubt anyone would complain though, if Oda drew Robin or Nami in some interesting positions while hardly wearing anything.
The series looks interesting, I'll probably check it out eventually.
-
-
I can't imagine how this manga could possibly be good.
-
Sexy women + half-nudity = Instafail, AM I RITE?
It's only one chapter, quit being so insecure.
-
If this can be even loosely used as an indicator for the game, I'm skipping it thank you.

Nope, nope, nope, no way is this scene not suggestive. No way, no how.:whistling:
Its nice to see another possible epic in the works for Takeshi Obata, but the title of the manga, Blue Dragon, won't this be some copyright infringement of some sort?
-
Huh. Dunno how I feel about this yet. Obata is a keen artist, but if he only has bad story to draw…

He was commissioned by MistWalker to do one of the manga. There will also be an anime.
-
Whoa…I'm totally confused now. We are talking about Blue Dragon, the RPG coming out for the Xbox 360 done by MistWalker with character designs by Akira Toriyama correct?
What the hell does this manga have to do with game? A game that seemed to be KIDS with shadow powers save the world from some evil.
Sounds like the similarities end in name only...kinda like that crappy comic that comes in the box of Enchanted Arms.
-
So Akira Toriyama makes character designs for the XB360 game while Takeshi Obata draws out the manga. …Hm, actually I wish it was the other way around, but whatever is better for mainstreaming (even though I can't imagine what those scans would look like with Akira drawing them).
-
I didn't think that this had anything to do with the Blue Dragon video game by the Chrono Trigger guys when I first saw it.
But according to Wikipedia, it does.
-
Of course it's connected, it's all part of a huge marketing/franchising blitz.
The problem I have with this is that in the history of Japanese RPGs, maybe five (at most?) have had really good stories. At the risk of being premature, I'm assuming Blue Dragon will join the ranks of every other totally derivative RPG story. If I want a good story, I read a book or manga, not play a game or by extension, read a manga based on a game. But I'm sure I'll be hearing about this (probably crappy) manga for years just because it's drawn by Obata.
-
Well, I'm thinking the game has a good chance of being cool. So I don't think people should use these first pages of the comic as an indicator of the game.

According to this article from ANN (Dated on the 14th): http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/article.php?id=9786
Ami Shibata is the artist….
EDIT: fixed the link

Why does your link go to the MAR anime page?

notice they say, "January issue". Think about it, the one we are thinking about is weekly. They are talking about the Blue Dragon series in monthly jump.

The long haired one with the tattoos is a boy. The Blue Dragon manga in Monthly Jump is based on the game (as in, features the same characters as the game, and I would assume a similar (if not the same) story.) This one… I don't know. I can't read Japanese so it could be a sequel or a prequel, or it could just exist within the world of Blue Dragon. So again, stephen, you shouldn't blow it off so suddenly.
The nudity isn't that complicated, here's how I see it:
Blue Dragon character designs are by Toriyama, we know this. The first scene (chapter?) of Toriyama's famous work, Dragonball, began as a boy unfamiliar with women investigated this "strange creature"
From what I see of this (and the little translations from 4chan) this seems to be a modern homage to that scene (albeit alot more explicit.)
Regardless it's hardly anything to get worked up about.
-
The woman, Mio is her name apparently, promised to "teach" the boy, Ral, about girls if he beats someone named Shadow.
-
I could give it a fair chance, but if I gave every manga under the sun a fair chance, I'd never have time for anything else
And I know what I like and don't like.

Yeah, I took another look at it, and I guess my Japanese was really, REALLY rusty.

looks at game
looks at manga

The manga in Monthly Jump and the anime will be based completely on the game.

But according to Wikipedia, it does.
..and that's what's confusing me, the art & 'feel' of the manga doesn't seem related to the game, which makes me belive that this manga is either a prelude or a prolouge to the game, but based off all this info I'm reading…....I'm 10000% confused about this manga! Oh well might read this shit if I feel like it
-
looks interesting. when there's a HQ raw please do tell
-
Here's the torrent to the raw. It's a fast torrent though…
Think I'm gonna check this out. The art looks Obata-standard
-
after looking through this chapter, i say that the next obata manga should be a hentai. or ecchi. or whatever showing boobs and skirts.
-
por guy all that badassnes he shows and in th end he doesn't even get it
This i'll definitely read
hope TOWNL or whoever decides to scanlate thisdoesn't suffer to much while cleaning it and does it relatively fast
-
I would think it's a very good thing that a comic adaptation isn't very similar to the original game though. Otherwise it would kinda make it pointless. But to turn it into a geek soft porn… :sideways:
And speaking of the game, Famitsu gave it 37/40. It's a bit hard to tell how good the game actually is - after all it's a Famitsu's review - but at least it should be better than your avarage game.
-
There's a lot of male nudity this week, isn't there.
Famitsu gave it a 37? That's the highest score if seen give to any XB360 game so it should be good.
-
Wow, that ain't borderline pron. Way to Obata.
-
I think it looks pretty good…except for that rather ridiculous, and blatant scene....after berserk though (which is probably my second series after One piece)
peace
-
Well the game looks f-ing sweet. Of course you cant tell how good it'll really be substantially, but this looks like an old school Dragonball fan's wet dream.
About the manga; again it looks cool, as most stuff drawn by Takeshi Obata. And since I check out most shit (in a good or bad way) from Jump for some reason, and people I know will be scanlating it, I'll probably read it.
Though for some reason, manga Takeshi Obata has been involved with never completely convinced me. Even if he doesnt have anything to do with the writing.
Hikaru no Go was a good manga, and fairly interesting as far as a story about Go can be, but in the end it's just way too sterile. And Death Note could've been brilliant if part 2 didnt suck donkey balls. -
Unsurprisingly the art is great. The story now… It's more or less castrated Bastard!!, with all the batshit crazy humour and violence being replaced by half assed fanservice.
In the exact same situation Dark Schneider flipped the bird to everyone in the castle asking him to kill the demons for them, tried to molest every women in the vicinity before getting the living shit beat out of him by Yoko and forcefully complying.
Add the Naruto influences and I don't see how this could turn out to be something else than average.
-
sigh
Class time, children. Some of you don't know what fanservice is, but lucky for you there's a great teacher here to teach you. First the formal definition:
@Wikipedia:
Fanservice or fan service (Japanese simply "saabisu", "service"), is a vaguely defined term used in visual media — particularly in anime fandom —to refer to elements in a story that are superfluous to a storyline, but designed to amuse or excite the audience. The term is sometimes derogatory when used in criticism of clumsy, pandering use of visual fashions, or if the stories lack substance, such that fashions are the only thing notable about a series. …
The emphasis is on "superfluous to the story."
In Blue Dragon, the main character does not understand the female body so he investigates. This is part of the story, later on it's revealed that his "appreciation" of the female body motivates him to be a "hero." Therefore it is not fanservice, but let's look at some examples shall we…
These are all fanservice. Now in the first one you may say "Well, isn't getting dressed part of the story? Afterall, clothes don't magically appear on us (despite what some mahou shoujos might tell you.)" Well it's true clothes does need to be put on manually, but there's no reason to SHOW the viewer unless something that advances the story happens while the clothes is being put on. The second and third are self-explanatory, yes Hyacinth is a dominatrix but her rough play does little to advance the story, and the Bleach thing is just a color spread anyways, so…
Now for things that aren't fanservice:
About the first one: You're thinking, "Surely this is fanservice, she's naked!" But that's not important. Sure she could be wearing clothes but that would do nothing to develop the imposing dread her figure holds. Not to mention, embraced nudity is a way of displaying a lack of shame reserved for those who carry themselves above others (not unlike those who find people who fap to anime characters "inferior"…). Sure the second picture is sexy, but it's not fanservice, and the third while again depicting someone almost nude it isn't fanservice because... who gets in the pool fully dressed.
Now the homework will be to watch both seasons 1 and 2 of Girls Bravo and to report back on what was and wasn't fanservice for about 10 of the episodes.
Class dismissed.
-
Oh, you surely are passionated about the topic
. Especially when there's really just only one person who mentioned the word "(half assed) fanservice" to begin with.
"A house wife didn't have any cash to give to a plumber so she paid with her body." It's relevant to the story!
Is this written by Obata too - so he doesn't just do the art?
-
lecture about fanservice
That was fascinating.

Thank you.
And no, there's someone else writing the story. At least the ToC of Jump lists two people as credits for the series.
EDIT: And the lecture wasn't really aimed at anyone specifically, I just had to get it off my chest, so I figured I'd do it here, since… it was the soonest the issue crept up.
And I love my sig... I can't wait for this game.
