As most of you know, Superman 2 was not directed by Superman's director Richard Donner. He was cruley fired by the producers and replaced with a camp director. In doing so Gene Hackman refused to reshoot (all Luthor scenes, Marlon Brando scenes, and about 70% of 2 was done before Superman went to theaters. Most of Donners scenes were reshoot to add humor (celefane S anyone?) and Brando was replaced with Supermans mother due to expenses.
Flash foward a bit to 90. Europe and Austrailia get a different cut of 2 with added Donner footage. It is from there that fans cry for the REAL Superman 2.
Flash foward to now. In order to Celebrate Superman Returns, DVDs of the classic movies and George Reeves show are being released. Along with it is a recut Superman 2 titles Superman 2: The richard Donner cut. I have just viewed it, days from before it is released, and will now sum it up:
10x better then the original.
Gone is much of the bad humor that detracts from Zod. Gone is the terrorists. Back is Brando as Jor-El, making the Father Son bond from the first one come full circle, especially when Jor El sacrifices himself to return Supe's powers (know we know!), and more on the Lois Clark relationship (including a new way Lois gets Clark to admit he's Superman.) The ending is left to be desired, however, as it is the same as the first one (but it explains Jor El in Returns.)
This is not better then Superman. It is better then Superman 2, way better. I reccomend it. Its worth the money.

On a related note, what did you think of Superman Returns in comparison to the original flicks?

It was quite interesting. Superman with a son? That came out of nowhere. It has potential to be a great movie series. They set up alot of interesting things. It sucks that the guy who played cyclops in the xmen movies left that series to play lois lane husband tho. He is going to lose another wife.

The Donner cut cleared up a lot of problems with Returns. Lois forgets Supermans Identity, but they still have sex. Luthor is still in prison.
Superman Returns is a good counterpart with the classics. Spacey was great keeping Hackman's intrepertation of the character in mind, but he added a new level of danger to him.
Lois and Jimmy leave something to be desired. Routh does a good job I believe, save the whole stalking Lois thing.
So how did I think of it with Reeve in mind? Routh will never be as good as Reeve. However they work out nicely. Now I will watch 1,2, and Returns side by side soon and when I do my opinon may change. But I liked it, especially with Brando and Lois' article from the first one to tie it together nicely. -
I know this isn't the Superman Returns thread, but I was wondering if I could ask you this: What exactly was the deal with Superman's son at the end of the movie? I didn't really understand how that was supposed to work out. If you don't mind.
