Okay, has anybody ever thought about this??? What happens when a merman eats a DF, would he still be able to swim?? I mean, he comes from the water right?
A DF "Merman"?????

I think he/she would be able to breath under water, but not swim. So, it would be pretty dangerous for a merman/fishman to eat a DF.
-
The idea is funny though!

that's a great point!!
I always wondered what would happen if someone ate a Zoan fruit that turned them into some kind of aquatic creature, ie fish, mollusk, dolphin etc (maybe even frog or some other amphibian)… would they be completely useless?
but i guess you're right, they can have gills/be able to breathe/hold breath for long time, but just be dead weights in the water...

It's been thought about a lot.
A merman that eats a Devil Fruit would no longer be a 'true' merman- he/she would just be someone with fishy parts and an inability to swim.
And a Devil Fruit ability.

that's like saying a human who can't breath air isn't a true human.

no, fish need to move through the water to breathe. if a fish stands still for too long it will die from lack of oxygen.

I wouldn't be suprised if Oda doesn't touch on this idea when the crew venture to the underworld island…
