20th Century Boys Discussion

For me is Kenji!
-
Yukiji :D
-
I was seriously conflicted about this. Kenji and Kanna are both just so awesome.
Eventually, I had no choice, so I travelled a long and harsh road to track down the legendary all-knowing hermit, who could surely solve this conundrum. After a spectacular adventure involving the fighting of enormous dragons, monstrous beasts and fiendish robbers, I finally tracked him down to his lonely cottage in the mountains. Upon entering, I had to endure three monstrous tests of incredibly harshness, involving among others the eating of a snake that was on fire and that continuously gave birth to more snakes.
After defeating the champion of Darkness, as well as the champion of the Notquitethatmuchdarkness, I was smitten and wounded, and needed five whole weeks to recuperate. Eventually, the hermit came to me, and I was allowed to lay my quandary before him. I asked him, should I vote for Kenji and Kanna in this poll on the Arlong Park forums?
He gave me a confused look and left.
I said ''screw it'' and voted Kanna.
-
Kenji. I always cry "Be Yummy!" whenever I cook fried rice. And other fried dishes for that matter.
No option for Friend? Just kidding….
-
I LOVE Kenji!
But Otcho's pretty badass.
And I really like Father Nitani. -
Kenji rocks. I voted for him, but it's a tough three-way tie for my top three characters: Kenji, Otcho/Shogun, and Kanna. Kanna's awesome. B)
-
Wow, I haven't read that manga in a while, but I remember Otcho being really awesome. I forgot most of the other character's names besides Kenji and Kanna.
-
Friend.
:P
Kenji would probably be my overall favourite, but at the current point in the manga Kanna is. I think I liked Otcho more before he was sent to prison, but he's still cool now.
Need more Vol18 chapters :(
-
After reading book 18, Yabuki Joe is utterly awesome, and since he's probably Kenji, I went ahead and voted for him.
-
It was a 3-way split between Kenji, Otcho, and God. Yeah, God, cause he's awesome. In the end, though, I went with Otcho. Memories of seeing him in that prison for the first time, all scarred and old and jacked like a friggin beast, god that was awesome.
-
Otcho OWNZ!
-
Wow, I'm digging up an old thread…
Eclipse from Manga News just told me that 20th Century Boys are ending (ended). Finally I can go back to read the whole series again!
I read up to v19 (or was that v9?) or so, and didn't bother to go back when newer volumes were released because I forgot most of the story line.
Since the article kind of spoiled me, I'll spoil whoever reading this, too. ...
Original article is at: http://www1.odn.ne.jp/cjt24200/yamada/log/33/index.html#08! The true identity of "Tomodachi" was Fukubee. He was supposed to be killed by Yamane, but when the pope was about to be assassinated, he came back from the dead and protected pope and stuff. Though, in reality, Fukubee was really killed, and he was switched with someone else in the middle. When Fukubee was "Tomodachi," he wore Ninja Hattori-kun's mask, but he started to wear a mask with "Tomodachi" symbol from the middle.
! Sadakiyo was alive, too, and it goes into the climax. A 13th helicopter crashed into an UFO (or something? saucer/disk) and it fell. Kenji was alive, but Sadakiyo and "Tomodachi"'s dead/alive is unknown. On top of that, he met Kan'na and the STORY ENDED.
! <insert picture="">… Hrmmm?
! What happened to the true identity of the "Tomodachi"? Kiriko? Pregnancy of Takasu? Urasawa-sensei wrote in the end comments as follows:
=
And so, I'll go into a hide for a while. Please look for the day we meet again.
=
! ... Hrmmm? Hrmmm!?
! No way, he'll leave all the foreshadows like that and end this story!? The sudden ending and "Thank you for reading this for 7 years" makes me ... lose my word.
! ... Or that's what I thought, until I found this word in the end: "Spring 2007, the final chapter will be released!!" True, if he ended the story like this, it'll be huge ass weirdest ending ever since Princess Hao.</insert> -
After reading book 18, Yabuki Joe is utterly awesome, and since he's probably Kenji, I went ahead and voted for him.
! You're right
For me, it's Otcho. He's a badass.
I'll start reading this again soon.
-
Psst! Top-secret actual Tomodachi is:
! Katsumata-kun
-
I actually own a volume. I like the series and saw that volume 19 came with a mini cd with the song "20th Century Boys" by T-Rex. So I said what the hell and bought it. I think this is the volume I am up to. Time to head for the scripts and raw downloads!
-

Really??? (Don't even remember who that was…)
-
! He never appears as a character, but he is mentioned as early as Volume 1. He is the science-loving student who died and haunts the science classroom. Also read carefully the pattern of names that Chou-san reads when he looks through Kenji's class album…
-
^^; I definitely have to start over again.
-
WAH?! (I nearly walked into that spoiler). So I guess it ends with volume 21? Though I have yet to read the volume.
Concerning the poll
I went with Yoshitsune due to his character development throughout the serie regarding leadership. It is interesting how he went from a frail business suit to the head of an early rebellion group against Friend. BUT, my favorite character in this serie will always be Sadakiyo for I can relate most with this character as an ostracized kid with fantastic fascination with the unknown; also I felt that he was the most pitied out of all other manga characters I have read. Excellent character*I love 20th century boys…ugh this is the only serie where I CANNOT, in all means, click on the spoiler button. So glad that it has ended though (despite me not finishing it yet...oh the anticipation!). Pluto, his new serie, seems very promising as well.

Yeah, I almost always read spoilers, but there's no way I'm going to read any for 20th Century Boys.
And I also like Pluto…mainly to see what he does with all the Tezuka characters.
-
O_o Ending?! Awesome (Reading marathon XD)! I can't wait to read the translations for it. Darn spoiler button hovering in front of me face. Couldn't resist. Looked, but it's been a while since I last read 20th Century Boys….. So, it's good. Can't wait to re-read it all in one sitting (or attempt to).
EDIT: Read a little more about this abrupt 'ending'. Suppose maybe it's a hiatus rather than an ending, or so says some. Although I'd like for it to end soon, from what I heard about the 'ending', it sounds like it has a lot of loose ends. I'd rather sit it out for a good ending than a rushed ending. Either way, I'm looking to my reading marathon..... Eventually.
EDIT 2: If that sounded like contradicted mumbo jumbo, probably was. I'm plenty tired at the moment.
-
Wonder if there is a reason for the abrupt ending (not knowing what it is). I would really love to reflect over it.
-
It seems that it's not really an ending, more a hiatus.

Guah! Just read volume 21….bah! I guess there will be vol.22 in which this will all be revealed?
-
I've just finished Monster and is currently in the process of downloading this manga. Is this as good as Monster or even better? =D
-
I personally thought 20th century boys was better, but opinions differ as Monster was an incredible work in of itself. 20th CB just seemed to have a more appealing feel regarding the emphasis on the nostolgic aspects of the childhood, though it really depends on taste rather than quality (for both are high quality stories from Naoki)
-
People around me say 20CB is better cause Monster was too dark themed… Yeah, both stories are good; it's just your preference, I think.
-
[off-topic]
Seeing how LONG 20th century boys is, I decided to read Pluto first. His art has improved a lot and Pluto is cool =D
Do we have a pluto thread?[/off-topic]
-
Pluto has yet to be completed yet I believe, but it is an awesome twist from Atom Boy (so many variations of name). But yeah it is awesome!
-
I think we had Pluto thread… but I'm lazy.
-
Here's the Pluto thread.
-
I always wanted to read 20CB… but never found a raw content in the web.... and too poor right now to buy them....
-
After reading this series, i am seriously WOW'd by this series. Damn, I think my pocket's gonna have a big hole soon =X
! When Kenji came back, I was practically jumping for joy.
Anyways, does anyone know where to find the raws? XD
-
I can't stand it anymore…I want to read the spoilers on the first page...GUAH! I keep reading volume 21 over...and over...trying to pick up any clues..it is just making me far more confused then I am already.
-

! So what's fukubei? The "face" of friend before he died? Or is this guy you mentioned the one who took over fukubei after he died?
! confused -
So…., no one has the RAW version of 20th Century Boys? So far I read Vol. 1-3. I need the rest.
-
so taking a reccomendation from someone on another forum I read this over the past week (just finished 21)
HOLY AWSOME BATMAN,
this also has solidified my belief that anime / manga with Rock References / Rock itself will always be good
when is 22 supposed to start coming out?
-
October is the tentative publication date for V.22.
! Which was pretty lame and not at all a worthwhile conclusion, however temporary, for a story of this caliber
-
Here's my beef with anything Urasawa touches.
While the overall story is interesting, there's a massive (massive) amount of time wasted in creating 'DO-N!' scenes that really aren't 'DO-N!'-worthy. Same with Monster. From the chapter title and the first few pages you can guess the general direction and conclusion of many chapters which is a pain in the ass to read through. Could you skip it? Yeah, but then what's the point of reading in the first place.
It makes me wonder, are many 'adult manga' created for those with a remarkably low sense of creativity?
Yes, it makes for a tangible set of characters, but do we really need pages upon pages of random guy x from the story who I don't care about having family problems and then dying by the end of the chapter? Not really. I'm just bitching to bitch but I'm really glad it's readable all at once. Waiting for manga like this to come out only to have chapters like that would be like bamboo under the fingernails.
-
Well, with Monster, I thought that most of the time throughout the series, the suspense was better than the payoff.
But I read Urasawa stuff for the suspense I guess. Because sometimes it seems that what you learn isn't as big as how it's built up. Or something like that. And of course there are usually great moments along the way, so I think it's kind of worth it in the long run.
I mean, in Pluto I know what will basically happen (if it's anything like what Tezuka did in Astro Boy, although he has made some differences already as far as who is living and dying). But still, I usually can't stop reading his stuff once I start (although I've always had most or all of each series available to me at once, which helps).
-
the suspense was better than the payoff.
So very, very true.
Precisely my thoughts. He'll spend a chapter or sometimes longer building up to something and it's like….oh...uh...okay.
-
some of the parts in 20th CB threw me for huge loops though
-
Halfway through tank 6 this series transforms from mediocre to amazing.
Nothing has happened that I didn`t expect or find all that surprising but stuff just started to HAPPEN which was my biggest problem with the first 5 volumes and basically all of Monster.
As nice as side stories can be, I really don
t give a crap about random German couple X in the wilderness and don
t think there should be an entire chapter (or three or four) devoted to them.20CB seemed to be going down that same sad road but thankfully from 6 that all changed.
I tore through 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10 like grass through a goose and am looking forward to continuing this evening.
-
yeah it just picks up from there and catapults into awsome
-
hmm, that's weird…
clear up something for me will you?
I thought 20th C Boys ended? I read the last chapter several months ago at JoJohot (chinese translation site)and...
! I found the ending an extreme let down.
no loose ends were tied, the story ended as if the publisher told the author "you have 3 chapters to end the series" and the author just threw something together quickly…or did I miss something -_-;
-
which volume did you stop reading at since its 21 volumes and ends on a massive cliffhanger
-
the last chapter I read was 249
I don't know what volume that is though =\249 even ended with the author writing to the reader about how he's grateful that the fans have been keeping up with the series.
and also, a huge bold letter that says 'END' in the last panel.
it's been several months since chapter 249
I haven't seen a new chapter out yet
so I'm guessing that's the end. -
This post is deleted!
-
I'm trying very hard to avoid spoilers but does anyone know when Vol. 22 will be released?
-
I believe its either November or sometime next year
