I dont like the idea of Cosplays

Hi, I love anime and all that. And I also love to draw my favorite characters etc. etc. But I cant stand the idea of cosplays. Really dont you think that cosplays is taking a dream that can never be fulfilled too far?

People, just realize that youll never be Luffy, or Smoker or whoever you want to be. Cosplaying isnt something you can be proud of doing when youre past you teens. Maybe if your 16> it`s ok, but not if your 18,19 etc.etc

I think cosplay is one of the reason why many people here in Europe associate anime with geeks and nerds.

Yeah…I find it a little disturbing. While dressing up in costumes can be fun--on halloween--dressing as anime characters doesn't work out in real life.

Spike Speigal, for example, while a cool looking character is anime--can you imagine how goofy his hairstyle would be in real life? Really, I think that Japanese fashion just looks better animated.

Honestly, I have never ever cosplayed and never will. I kind of find that cosplay is a bit disturbing but I'm sure people have their reasons. I'm not judging nobody, do what ya do. Just be mindful, if you cosplay, you may not get the reaction you are hoping for.

Ramza: Absolutely not. Many animes are just as mature or for grown-ups as "real tv-shows." Compare Cowboy Bebop (especially the last episodes) to My Name Is Earl, or Desperate Housewives. In my opinion CB is hell of a lot more a series for grown ups than My Name Is Earl (I like both shows, so just chill).

Cosplaying isn't about dreaming to BE a character, it's about having fun and being creative making a costume with your friends. I have never cosplayed, but I know people who do, and there are lots on this board who do. Haven't you ever had fun at a costume ball? I'm 28, and I know many adults who love to dress up in costumes. Who decided that costumes were just a kid's thing? You may not be the type to have fun with costumes, but that's no reason to pass some kind of lame judgement on everyone that does. And you know that the cosplaying originated in Japan, right? And a lot of cosplayers are in fact 14+ or even 18+. I wouldn't hesitate to do it either. :P

Who's going to a cosplay convention, who's going to carnival and who's celebrating halloween?

Honestly, costumes are just part of most cultures, cosplay isn't some "nerdy" activity or w/e, it's just a gathering of people that celebrate a certain event by wearing a costume.

You can be a nerd and not dress up, or you can be a famous movie star, dating Lindsey Lohan like Wilmer Valderama and show up to every single convention; either way you're just a human celbrating life, some are more open to things than others.

I have nothing against it if someone likes cosplay, but I don't like the idea. I'm VERY dreamy person myself but somehow cosplay just looks and sounds ridiculous to me. I do appreciate the effort to make all those clothes and all. Sometimes they look really amazing… but in overall I don't like the idea of cosplay.

I would never try to look and act like One Piece (or some other anime) character. It would feel like I'm making the characters (and myself) look stupid. Very often those cosplayers doesn't even look like their character AT ALL and that's one reason what makes it seem so stupid. Nobody can be Zoro or Sanji or Robin and that's it.
They are anime characters and I love them as anime characters. No real life person can imitate them… and because of this, I also HATE the ideas about live action movies.
When I heard rumours about DBZ movie, I was all like: "NOOOOOOO!"
Same thing with One Piece… or any other anime. I hope they will never make an live action movie.

Cosplaying is maybe meant to be some sort of honour towards that character who they are imitating, but if I did something like that I would feel like it's totally the opposite thing and I'm making the character look like a fool.

Yes, good cosplaying is good, while bad cosplaying is bad–of course. It's the bad cosplaying that everyone has a problem with--like all the male sailor moons or overweight versions of normally muscular or thin anime characters.

But if you can look like a character--go for it.

I was gonna say something like that, but you pretty much covered my thoughts Cosmic.

I think that cosplaying is just another way to approach a your hobby as with drawing fan art, or making AMVs. Nobody who cosplays actually thinks that they are the said character or like was said, dreams of becoming that character (and if there are then they so few in number that they aren't even worth mentioning), they just go to a convention to have fun and be around like-minded people who also like to have fun with anime/manga.

But I do understand where some people who don't cosplay or don't like to for that matter are coming from. In all honesty, I was pretty adamant against cosplaying myself. Then a friend of mine who was going to Otakon, convinced me to go in costume (she suggested I go as Zoro). When I actually went, I found that I actually feel a little more in place, in costume . I was kinda surprised, but considering that Otakon is one the biggest anime conventions in the whole country I guess I should've expected something like that. And every cosplayer I've met seems like your perfectly average fan.

It's all in good fun! And if alot of people ask for a picture, then you know you did really well with your costume!

I would also like to state that I am 25, and dressing up is good fun. Just as drawing, or playing video games, or watching anime. I don't have money or talent, but if I had a costume in my hands now, I'd wear it.

I can see "cosplaying" being somewhat amusing, I suppose, but really only if you went with a bunch of friends and with a theme - and in that case, it's more like Halloween or a costume party than anything else. My main beef with "cosplaying" is the very existance of the word itself. Get over yourself, it's a farking costume. You aren't some distinguished actor entering the body of your character, you're just somebody in a costume and you don't need your own goddamn word just because you're surrounded by people in similar costumes.

In other words, I've never had much problem with the traditions of most anime fans (despite the fact that I find the majority of animes and mangas to be incredibly stereotyped and boring and would hardly consider myself an anime fan), I just have a problem with some of the fans themselves. Whoever decided that this needs its own word should be shot between the eyes.

I feel that cosplay has the same basic idea of modern day Halloween logic, dress up in your favorite persona and then have fun.

If a person hates the idea of cosplay then the simple rule is not to go dressed up.

Uhhh, wow. Last time I checked, cosplay was a hobby for fun, the word "cosplay" was from Japan (hence why it's used in association with anime costumes, much like "anime" is used for cartoons from Japan instead of just "cartoon"), and geeks and anime were associated regardless or whether or not the fans dressed up in costumes for conventions, the same with Star Trek or most other convention-type fandoms. It's for fun, that's all.

Okay, here's the thing. There are two main categories of cosplayers, from my experience, and most of you are lumping them all into the first one.

First there are the ones like most of you are apparently thinking of, who seriously think they're the characters they're dressing up as or something and are generally really crazy and obsessive. These are the ones who might make their boyfriends dress up as their character's significant other or whatever, and they're really touchy if you say they're going a little overboard. These people…. deserve the ridicule. Also, I think the ones who wear really revealing slutty-looking costumes just for the sake of being revealing fit in this category. Because uggghhhhh oh my god no one wants to see your ass.

Then there are the ones who just like sewing and making costumes because it's fun, or figuring out makeup techniques. They like seeing just what they can do as far as design and construction, and they like just dressing up and dorking out. There is a big difference between the ones who take themselves ridiculously seriously and the ones who do it for fun and know damn well that they're being total geeks in doing so.

I mean, I'm not even really an anime fan anymore so you certainly can't accuse me of fantasizing about being Mr. 9 or something; I've taken to doing really random costumes lately. Like at A-Kon this past summer, I actually went as Klinger from MASH as a joke. And let me tell you, anyone who dresses up as a MASH character at a convention is NOT taking themselves too seriously. It's just hilarious fun.

Urg that reminds me of a Halloween party I went to a few weeks ago, a few girls were just wearing revealing costumes because Halloween allows them to get away with it. Sometimes the more you wear the better a person looks.

I thank you for your information on the birth of the word - knowing it's some kind of Engrish mash-up makes me loathe it a bit less. Not much, however, since I also have the habit of calling manga comics and anime cartoons, considering there is literally no difference between the two sets besides country of origin and I don't see anyone in America calling the Asterix cartoon "Animatix", for example. That's probably just personal opinion, however.

Okay, as a matter of my personal taste, I dislike seeing anyone, regardless of their body type, in unnecesarily revealing costumes. If I don't know you, I don't need to see your butt crack, thanks. But I sure as hell don't think people should be excluded from a hobby just because of what they look like, that's just elitest BS. I know no one had said that specifically, but I wanted to touch on that before someone did. Yeah, you see overweight people dressed in costumes too revealing at a lot of cons, but I see a lot of the skinny girls with boob jobs running around in costumes they'd get arrested for under other circumstances, too. It's not about the costume at that point, it's about the attention for lack of costume and it's annoying no matter who does it.

Oh yeah, and as for calling anime cartoons, I have no beef with that, it's true. That's how I tend to think of them anyway. All the distinctions and special words used to try and elevate and give more legitimacy to something is kind of pretentious (people who insist they don't watch cartoons, they watch anime, etc). However, I don't get my undies in a bunch if someone just uses the word anime to describe a show from Japan or uses the word cosplay to describe the costume stuff at a con, because that's the generally accepted term and they're not using it to feel superior to the little peons with their "cartoons" and "costume parties". That's just what people started calling it and it stuck.

I actually forgot to mention that those who do it for fun is something I understand although I'm not very exited about it myself.
My experience about cosplay do is pretty bad. I haven't seen good cosplay almost at all. Those cosplayer who I have seen are often taking the whole thing so seriously and that's just ridiculous.
Like they do some lame costume in 30 minutes and then they show pictures of themselves in some forums and are all like: "Look at me! I'm Zoro/Nami/whoever!"
And that's the time when I feel ashamed for them and for the characters because it feels like they are making the whole anime and its fans look stupid as well.
I prefer that anime characters stay as anime characters. I'm not interested about seeing them in reality. And like I said before… that's also the reason why I hate the ideas about live action movies. Just imagine One Piece or DBZ movie. Ewww. I really AM NOT looking forward for those.
