As I was putting my sig together I noticed that there seems to be a design on the collar of the Klabautermann's raincoat, so I decided to keep it in. I admit I may have changed it somewhat while enhancing it, does anyone know if it means anything? Here's what it looks like in the original scan. Is it just a sound effect?

I think that's a sound effect for someone smiling brightly, but I don't know for certain.

Mybe Marry's kana name?

No, it's not.
Probably a sound effect.
-
what???
-
Yup, just a sound effect. 'ニコニコ' is the onomatopoeia for happy smiles.

Yeah, but there's also that little bit after the 'ko' that looks like either a 'tsu' or a 'shi' (they look similar).
I can't help but think it says "Nikoshi", mostly because I made up a fanfic character with that name.

**The last letter is really small, so it's like niko-. A little tsu will make it sound kind of cut off or emphasized.

Makes it "quick" or something. So yeah, it says "Niko." (I always translate it as "grin," but that's just because it's what US manga publishers usually turn it into. "Smile" is equally as effective.)
As for keeping it, though, I say go for it. The sound-effect makes sense, considering the grin that thing's got on 'im. :)

Your sig's scary… It's like... evil grin rather than a smile lol. I wasn't expecting that.
-
Heh, maybe I should get rid of the eyes, after all, Oda didn't give me enough info in the drawing to make the eyes the way I did. Heck, the Klabautermann could be wearing sunglasses for all I know.
Thanks for the information everyone!

Your sig is really scary…..
Change it.Please.
Well, when I look at that kanji,I think its an SFX for a smile. -
maybe you should make your sig drop some blood from its mouth :D
i don't know if it's a sound effect, but it looks nice, so keep it!

Your sig is nice. I think you should keep it. :)

I wonder if Klabautermann really is a folklore legend out of our world. Is it just something Oda made up? That guy sometimes surprise me with his knowledge…
Nice sig btw... IMHO, its the eyes that make it look a bit scary

It's based on stories of boat haunts from a few places, but yes, there really is a Klabautermann… German folklore. It was thought to be a spirit that resided in the mast of ships. It would supposedly warn sailors of danger.
I found this:
"klabautermann — This is spirit who guards the ship. In one story it woke up the ship's mate when the lamp went out, and in another it held the masts together."
and this
"In Germany, in sailor
s myths, they also have the "klabautermann" Who dressed in sailor
s clothes, had a hammer and smoked pipe. It only left the ship when it was going to sink."Somewhere out there is a book, or thesis at least, on the subject. I'm half tempted to go to the library and look for it...
"Buss, Reinhard J., 1973, The Klabautermann of the northern seas : an analysis of the protective spirit of ships and sailors in the context of popular belief, Christian legend, and Indo-European mythology. Berkeley : University of California publications. Folklore studies."

The legend also often states that whoever sees a Klabautermann has an imminent death coming his way.
Sucks to be you, Usopp. :P

Oh thank you!
Oda really is amazing. One Piece is so multicultural sometimes it scares me… But anything goes on the Grand Line, right?
Klabautermann that is Merry doesn't have a smoking pipe... but not that it needs to. It kind of looks like Aisa from Sky Island. Maybe its the height.

I love the sig.
