People keep tellling me one piece is for kids

Alot of them probably have seen the dub, know it's been messed up but don't realize how much it was messed with.
-
One Piece is aimed at kids. :P Even in Japan. That doesn't mean adults can't enjoy it. Heck, I'm 28.
I imagine the people telling you it's for kids probably are still pretty much kids themselves. Teens have this fascination with getting away from "kids stuff" and watching "adult stuff" because they're trying to grow up and they think it makes them look cool. But in reality all you should care about, if you're a mature person, is what is a good story and what is not.Of course here in the US, we have wierd ideas about what makes things "adult". Like nowadays we can't have a character smoke a cigarrette. Japan doesn't think that way. Things that the FCC is paranoid about isn't so strict in Japan. So we see a cartoon character smoking a cigarrette and think "it must be for adults". Which is silly.
-
One Piece is for people.
-
It was aimed at kids in Japan, although apparently Japanese children can take a lot more violence (or Japanese parents pay a lot less attention) than in America. People of any age can still enjoy it. I'm in my mid-twenties and I enjoy it. Heck, my mother's watched some fansubs and she loves it too–big Chopper fan.
At any rate, One Piece is published in the same book as Bleach, so they're both aimed at about the same age group.
-
One Piece is for an elite race of anime fans who are the only ones deemed worthy to watch its beauty….
-
Shounen is all aimed at kids and teen boys so the person you were talking too was correct
-
One Piece is for wimps, real men watch the Teletubbies. Straight up
-
@Cap'n:

This man speaks the truth. This quote is kinda close to what I was thinking.
-
Start them off with Kaizoku episode 36. Problem solved by the first "BELLEMERE-SAN!"
-
It's all relative:
If you look at the series from the point of view of a kid, it's for kids. If you look at the series from the point of view of an adult, it's for adults. Both viewpoints are valid – and we have both types here in AP, too.
Either way, you shouldn't feel embarrased about liking "One Piece".
We all have our seperate reasons for liking or disliking things -- nobody's reasons are any better or any worse than anyone else's reasons.
The trick is to find people who share your reasons – then you won't get teased as often! It's probably safe to say that a few people on this board share your reasons. ;)
-
Hahah, I would laugh if someone said that Bleach was better than One Piece. I apologize to any Bleach fans, but honestly… I'm just not seeing it.
-
@Mearl:

I think it's the opposite - Japanese parents pay more attention to their children, so they can teach them the difference between fantasy and reality, so they won't be warped by simulated violence. This is what Americans (seemingly) don't get, that it's not the shows that make their children more violent, it's their own neglect of them.
And I like Bleach about the same as One Piece.
-
It's mainly 4kids to blame to make it more "Childish"; It's not censorship laws, it's just America trying to give anime a bad name.
-
I just don't bother talking to people who I know, won't get it. Some people see it's animated, and think it's childish, no matter what you tell them. I don't bother with those people. They're too close minded.
But ya, I agree with Octogon. OP is for people. It may be aimed at kids, but anyone can watch it. I'm 25 and I watch lots of kids shows. Anyone ever seen Katie and Orbie? It's so cute.
-
One Piece is for kids. That's a fact. Bleach is also for kids. That's another fact. If you honestly are that affected by that statement, that's just shallow. A good story is a good story, no matter the format.
And man, Carter, I don't think there's a single thing you've said on these forums that hasn't been funny, haha.
-
I don't give a damn if OP is for kids. I'm 19 and I love the show so I watch it. That's it.
-
Yes, it's better watching cartoons than doing drugs and starting gangs.

quoted for truth
and america doesn't have a vendetta against anime as someone here seemed to state
-
Yeah… Who has noticed that Americans only censor things out of anime while in their own cartoons they put in pretty much whatever they want? Plus, some people I know have the impression that Americans really try to prevent Japanese music form entering the states.
@Octagon:
One Piece is for people.
Yeah, true.
I personally like Bleach better than OP… just a little more.
-
One Piece is for wimps, real men watch the Teletubbies. Straight up
Quote For Truth! LOOK AT THESE TOUGH BITCHES!
-
If so then why are you dudes even watching OP?
-
"People keep telling me one piece is for kids"
It's cuz One Piece was ON "4KIDS". :(
-
An 80 years old woman can watch Seasme Street, an real man can watch kiddies show even if it's not proper for your age.
I'm 25 years old, dude and I read One Piece because it's a mixture of kids/adult content.
-
I still don't see how it's for kids.
Last time I check the manga it says rated T for teen. Ages `14+
-
I saw on Anime News Network that the uncut Naruto Box Set was for ages 16+, and I know thats a show aimed at a younger audience.
-
Yes, it's better watching cartoons than doing drugs.
Or you can do both. The result can be hillarious at times :D

Are you talking about Viz? I don't see any age limit, it just says "Teen". But Japan doesn't have ratings like that. It's aimed at a younger audience. It's just as I said, in the US, if it has stuff like smoking and blood, it has to be rated teen, whereas in Japan, it doesn't.
Plus…14 years olds are kids IMO :ninja:
My Trigun manga says 12+. And Trigun the anime aired on Adult Swim. XD

People these days -.- So frickin paranoid.
-
Yes, One Piece is a children's manga series.
Last time I check the manga it says rated T for teen. Ages 14+
That's Viz's marketing scheme; understand that at age ten or so, children tend to rebel against "baby stuff" and so companies make efforts to market the same "baby stuff" as something different in order to appeal to the rebelling audience.
OP is given that rating not for children but as a warning for parents, due to the amount of blood in the series and the alcohol consumption, not to mention the excessive smoking.
-
@Octogon:
One Piece is for people.
Let's just go with that.
-

Agreed….(16 char...)

-
Eh… I never really got the "It's a children's series, but teenagers and adults alike can fully get into it and it rarely insults their intelligence or in any ways turns them off" thing. Same deal with Harry Potter. I've always thought of children's series as being more like the Bernstain Bears or something, a series older people would be hard-pressed to enjoy.
-
I've always thought of children's series as being more like the Bernstain Bears or something, a series older people would be hard-pressed to enjoy.
Hey – I resemble that remark!
I'm probably twice your age, but I enjoy Bernstein bear books. In fact, I think I enjoy them more then I enjoyed the last three Harry Potter books!Oops!
:ninja: -
Bernstein Bears rock! XD
There is a difference between stuff like the Barney, Sesame Street (I still love Sesame Street btw), Blues Clues, the stuff that comes on PBS, and action cartoons that are aimed at slightly older kids, like stuff on Cartoon Network. A lot of adults enjoy Dexter's Lab, Power Puff Girls, Teen Titans, Justice League, etc.. But fact is they're still considered kids shows.
It's just as I said, in the US (and increasingly in Japan, sadly), we have become very polarized in what entertainment we say is for kids and for adults and for silly reasons. Kids get older and want to grow up so they think "kids shows bad, adult shows good" and adults think "kids can't handle mature themes so this cartoon can't be for kids, we must shelter them from it" but having violence and profanity doesn't necessarily make a show higher in quality.
It reminds me…I remember when my niece was starting to get a little older and she refused to watch Loony Toons because "they're for little kids" and couldn't believe that adults of all ages love them. XD
-
I remember when my younger brother shrugged off cartoons cause he was "too cool" for them. I jus thought, fine, whatever. I'm 2 years older than you, and I'm going to go enjoy my cartoons. You can go be "cool" and do something else now.
I think we were around 14-12 at the time?(whoah, someone's playing with the edit box thingy)

Glad to see I'm not the only one who has to put up with this ignorance.
-
Silly Rabbit, One Piece is for kids.
-
@Octogon:
One Piece is for people.
I agree as well One Piece is for the people!
-
One Piece is PG-13.
-
I'm sick of people saying this dumbass shit. One Piece is aimed at children in Japan, not this emo teenage/adult fucktard stuff you think it is. The difference is, in other counties, the censorship laws have influenced the people there to think the content of shows should be sanitized to the point of terribleness (is that a word?). Japanese laws are a lot less lenient and allow these kinds of things to be shown on television no problem.
However, just because it's aimed at kids, it doesn't mean it's not a show that older people can like, it's just the best marketing area for the show. Remember that and you'll go far.
-
Yeah, it's like I said, the only people who care what age One Piece is aimed at are teenagers who are afraid that they'll get made fun of for watching something that's not "adult". Screw that. Once you're old like me that phoney peer pressure crap doesn't mean a thing anymore. XD
-
Actually do you really want to know who One Piece is aimed at?
The manga anyway?Oda.
Am I right or what?
The man is funneling all his interests into this thing and has stated how much what he does feels like play.
Its not for kids, teenagers, or whatever marketing perspective mindset were all too used to thinking in..This is made by a man sitting behind his desk carrying out his fondest dream, making the story he always wanted to read.
To imply its being made for insert age group here implys Oda is stepping out of himself to cater to some official market level interpretation of what 9 or 13 year olds or whatever "want" to read.
Do you really think Oda's doing that? Were thinking like editors, we need to think like creators.
-

Wow, I really like that Zephos. You're right, we shouldn't think like the editors. Which goes back to the comment "One Piece is for people". I think Oda did say that he is trying to write a story that he would have liked to read when he was a kid. It's not entirely true that Oda isn't thinking of any age group, because I know comic creators, and they do…they create story for whatever age group they fell in love with comics for, not in a way that they're saying "OK I better not do this because that's too adult", it's just intuitive. Oda knows what he likes and that's what he's doing.
