I've been thinking about his style and i really think it's going to end up being a mix of everything we've seen in one piece and will see in the future. shanks may not be the best swordsman in the world but he might be the 2nd or 3rd strongest swordsman in the world. also he might not be the greatest martial artist in the world but he might be the 2nd or 3rd best in the world. he may not be the fastest man in the world but he might be the 2nd or 3rd fastest man in the world and the same goes for everything else. he might be the most complete fighter in the one piece world and that may be what makes him such a formidable opponent. what do you guys think?
Anybody think Shanks fighting style might end up being a hybrid of all styles?
-
-
I think it's gonna be the kind of guy to find creatively with anything in the environment like in the old novels, plus it is a pirate cliche that Oda hasn't used yet and it fits to a one-handed guy. If this is the case Toei screwed doing a character like that in the forth movie I think (Bascud), which was one of the reasons that movie didn't suck btw.
-
Yeah, Shanks is like Jack Sparrow. And I´m not saying that in a bad way…
-
Shanks does not have to be a fighter. Just by good fighting you won't be a good leader.
Maybe Shanks is not special for his strength, but for his leadership? -
I was thinking he's an all aroung fighter that have master many different style of fightings but is not the best. Just as mihawk is the greatest swordsman and Yassop the greatest sharpshooter. But he does seem like the leader type,i guess only time will tell…
-
Shanks'll most likely use his sword, due to his specifically noted rivalry with Mihawk. Bleh.
However, if Oda surprises Gohn, with Shanks suddenly whipping out some badass war mace of awesome….
-
No, you guys are all WRONG!?!
His power is in his eyes, he can make people poop in their pants by looking at them!!

Me too, i think Shanks has the Jagan
-
Where?
You mean that he's an Emperor, too?
The fact (given by the marine) that he has might is not a prove that he's a strong fighter. -

-
@Octogon:
Yes, yes it does.
Actually if what he was saying was true about him just being a good leader, then it wouldnt necesarly mean that. His crew could be on the level of whitebeards. Not necesarily Shanks is on his level.
However I still think he will still be a top notch fighter, since he was a rival of MiHawk.
-
Personally, I think Shanks is infact a force to be reckoned with.
Technically, even if he was an emperor, there is no definitive proof he is strong. It could just mean he is dangerous because he is in charge of dangerous men. Although I find this second observation highly unlikely.
-
I'm always had a theory that he's a "Lupin the 3rd" style fighter. You know, not specializing in anything, yet having a variety of skills, and a fool proof plan that always keeps you on top.
-
@Octogon:
Yes, yes it does.
No, no it does not.
We're talking about OP, I know. In OP every badass character is certainly a badass fighter.
But i think about it logically.
Do you think Hussein for example could beat the fuck out of…ummm Hulk Hogan in a 1vs1 melee battle? No he can not, but he's (more or less he was^^) mightier, you read me? -
Maybe Shanks had an cyborg arm like Frankie, This arm eating a devil fruit, yep thats it
-
actually Shanks has a power that he can defeat anybody in any given match, but he will have to give up a limb to do so.
-
I think his fighting style is just plainly kicking enormous amounts of ass. You shouldn't need anymore than that.
-
Although I never played it, I heard in one of the games Shanks used a mixture of sword fighting and kicking techniques. I'd like to see him use something like that as his fighting style.
-
Well Shanks wasn't all that great in Grand Battle Rush so whoever made the game was working with no basis lol.
I honestly think Shanks is pure awsome when it comes to fighting. And on top of that he's a good leader.
-
c'mon we are talking about pirates. there not just gonna join ur crew cuz ur a nice guy. more than likely ur gonna have to gain their respect. the only way that would be is if u were able to kick their ass:devil:
-

So Shanks is supposed to be Zoro and Sanji's love-child?
Well, it'd make a lot of fangirls happy…

Shanks indeed will be one of the top fighters of the world. Let's look at some facts on our Red-Haired pirate…
Red Data book says Mihawk and Shanks sparred "frequently."
Anyway, what it says in the red data book:
本来左ききであるシャンクスはかつて、右の腰に長剣を携えていた。 ミホークとライバルだった過去からみて も、その剣の実力は世界でもトップクラスだ ったのだろう
"At first, the left-handed Shanks had simply carried his sword on the right side. When he was a rival of Mihawk, he was regarded as having some of the world's top-class skills"
As an addendum to that, Shanks carries a longsword. It is obvious that he is a swordsman.
Shanks is at the level of "Whitebeard'" and is one of the 'Four Emperors!'
Shanks is a powerful swordsman which is obviously makes him in the top three. If Shanks is at the level of Whitebeard I guess that puts Mihawk at the level of Whitebeard as well?

This post is deleted!

I think Shanks will be a leader-type,and chooses not to lay a finger on anyone whenever possible[like he did at the start of the series when the bandit pointed the gun to his head] so not many people get the chance to see his fighting style, which like some of you,I think he can fight with his longsword and some other style. Shanks having a DF sounds cheap though.
-
Regardless of how great a leader Shanks might be, if he were not a capable fighter he would be long dead.
He literally could not escape someone like ao kiji no matter how strong his crew was, especially if someone at ao kiji's level were specifically targeting him.
-
He's definitely skilled with a sword or Mihawk wouldn't have once considered him a good rival.
And well, he was able to stare at that giant sea serpent in chapter 1 and scare it shitless…
I'm going with the all-around amazing pirate. Jack Sparrow, I guess.
-
What if shanks has a skill that is like soru x10 speed?but no fighting ability.he can still run from whoever is after him with his crew taking care of the rest. There are tons of possibile situations where Shanks is not capable of fighting but has some way to escape/handle tough situations. My point is,not being a capable fighter doesnt mean he have to be dead.Otherwise, you would see usopp dead[sorry usopp fans, just an example] in the next few chapters now that the SH pirates are considered sooo dangerous to the marine.
btw i'm on the side that believes Shanks is a capable fighter.

Hussein was not a pirate. Take the real life Blackbeard as an example.**

What? Sorry, but their is a hige difference between Shanks and Ussop…..

just imagine shanks having mihawk's type skills and having super speed and real good martial arts ability. he would be able to cut people up into little pieces before they would even be able to react. shanks isn't really bulky so he is not going to win fights based on power so i'm guessing he has some really good speed and then add his skills with the sword and probably martial arts techniques. if lucci had zoro's sword skill's just imagine how bad it would of been for luffy. i'd imagine shanks being much better at martial arts than lucci and also has better speed.

Uhh… swordsmanship is a martial art, and Super speed is usuually involved with swordsmanship. Didn't you see the unseen slashes from Mihawk cuting Krieg's ship?
-
Come on Oda, make One Armed Swordsman references.
-
Well there seems to be some sort of business relationship between Shanks and Whitebeard wanting to team up (thats a guess from what ive seen) I don't think Whitebeard would team up with someone who isn't strong, there would be no point so Shanks must be a brilliant fighter probably on par with Mihawk or slightly less because Mihawk is the best swordsman and since shanks carries a sword there is no denying he isn't. And if that's not enough proof he's a swordsman, it's been said by Oda that he is.
-
It's my belief that Shanks is the strongest man in the world. Not white beard.

Don't let a certain person hear u say Shanks is stronger than WB. He will make sure you change your mind

I just wrote this in the other Shanks thread…
@Kibagami:It was stated in an SBS somewhere that Shanks is a swordsman no? Or maybe that just means his primary weapon is a sword.
Shanks probably has many "tricks" that dont adhere to the conventionalism of sword duels. It's not uncommon among the "handicapped" to have tools that help them survive. For example, some kind of device or weapon attached to his left arm stump, I'm thinking of a projectile weapon myself, but any kind of weaponry will do. Even if it taints his image, I think Shanks is not afraid to get his hands dirty because deception is a big part of being a Pirate. There is a difference between pulling a cheap shot and deceiving your opponent. Shanks strikes me as the kind of guy who would take advantage of all weaknesses. For example letting an opponent to believe that his left arm is useless and then surprising him/her with an attack from the left. Something like that…
Basically I'm just wondering what it takes to be officially categorized as a swordsman. Shanks is probably a kickass swordsman like it says in the first post, but I think there is a limit to drawing extremely strong sword fighting techiques. Mihawk raped Zoro not with fancy moves but with super speed and vision. He basically saw through all of Zoro's moves and attacked the one weak point of Zoro's techniques.
Needless to say Shanks has to be strong and fast, but honestly if the characters in this manga get any faster, they must as well be goku and buu teleporting all over the place. That's why I think Oda will need to emphasize on fighting SMART, using TRICKS, and finding new ways of showing how a good swordsman fight, not by using the fanciest moves, but by using the most direct and practical ones. The only problem is, that kind of fighting is usually very short and unexciting (just watch a masters level Kendo match for example). So to make things more interesting I would apply an element of trickery. Yeah that's all I have to say
-

What evidence have you to the contray? (Though admitedly, I'm just going with my intuition.)

In case you missed it "STRONGEST MAN IN THE WORLD!"
-
do you people read the manga and not just look at the pictures it clearly states "WHITEBEARD STRONGEST MAN IN THE WORLD"
-
I don't trust the statement, is what i'm saying. lol thought that was obvious.
-
It doesn't matter what you trust it says strongest so he is strongest. I could think wapol is the strongest and during luffys fight he held back to conceal his true power, so he could return later to take over the world.
-

What the ****, Spi D. Erman do you have cyber-brain sclerosis? Or is it fanboyism…?
Never mind I will deal with you later.
-
It's obvious that Shanks is very strong, or else his crew wouldn't be following him. It's also obvious that he's an incredible strong swordsman, due to Mihawk considering him his rival. Though I don't think that he's as strong of a swordsman as Mihawk, he probably more than makes up for the difference by using other forms of combat and imagination. I believe that Oda will make Shank's fighting style one of the more unique styles in One Piece – one where he uses moves he's created himself -- so I am definitely looking forward to it.
I'm also looking forward to more of the fighting styles fromt the rest of his crew, as it seems to be a crew without anyone with a DF power.
-

Lmao people like you are just hilarious. Keep it up.
As if you had any actual jurisdiction over a story shrouded in as much mystery as this one.
-
I dont agree with Spiderman but I understand his point. Just because someone says a person is the strongest, doesnt mean that is the case. It is all relative. Gol. D. Roger and whitebeard tied but Gol d roger was pirate king. And whitebeard still havent found one piece. Strength isnt evrything.
Blackbeard killed memebers of whitebeard creew. He could care less how strong whitebeard is. He is after his own dream.
-
**I could understand spi D. Erman if a character in the story said it, but it came straight from Oda. "The Strongest Man in the World" appeared in one of those little boxes, those boxes don't lie.
Anyone saying Whitebeard isn't currently the strongest, are just plain ignoring the facts. Simple as that.**

The question of Shanks has puzzled Monkey D. Spirit (<- everybody is a D. now, right?) for the longest time.
I confess to having spent most of my OP-life in the "Shanks is overrated" camp, but due to the latest developments, I have recently changed my mind (Oda telling us in our faces that Shanks is one of the four strongest men in Grand Line was a big help).
My reasons for underestimating Shanks were simple: he had appeared at the very beginning of the manga. At this point Oda's drawing style was not really the best and he was also making an effort to make One Piece look piratey, so Shanks and his crew got a rather lame-o-tame-o design and presentation. When got to see them once again we could see that Oda had tried his best to improve them up to the current standards of badassery, Shanks had a sleek new hairstyle and some very sexy pants and Yasopp was looking all the worse for having done up his hair in dreadlocks (wtf), but they still remained the most conservative crew so far, lacking any really representative elements. That, coupled with the fact that the characters made very few references to any arc beyond the penultimate one, made me gradually forget about Shanks (I went totally "o_O" when Usopp started mentioning Kaya in Water7 xD).
But now we're faced with the fact that Shanks is indeed strong, not only that, he's one of the strongest. And that requires a fighting style. One that is not only original in the never-seen-before way but also allows for a high damage output and an oh-it's-impossible-you're-going-to-lose-against-him rating.
So far the suggestions are good, Shanks is the only pirate that we could truly consider "swashbuckling" and that involves a nice mix of styles: a kick followed by a sword slash and a surprise gun-shot out of nowhere, dodge and hit him with a bottle of rum. Now here's my addition to that:
The Spirit Arm
We all know that Shanks's lack of a right arm is going to play a decissive role in his battle, but maybe that is precisely the key to his fighting style. While his enemy focuses on parrying the attacks from his other limbs, they let their guard down until suddenly WHAM a mysterious punch delivered by an immaterial fist on Shanks's right knocks them out. There are two ways that Oda could play this out:
-
The paranormal way. Just as Zoro's aura is visible and Merry developped a soul, the force of Shanks's will allows him to materialize that aura into the arm he lost long ago.
-
The shonen-science way. The arm is not really there and there was no real punch, Shanks's strength in conjunction with his well-planned movements creates a void in the air/shockwave to his right that delivers an unstoppable blow.
So, quite a long post, ne? Monkey likes thinking up fighting styles in his spare time.
