To be honest when I first heard about this movie back in Febuary, if it was going to be anything like the Ali G movie, I really couldn't be bothered with it. But after it's huge success at Cannes, I became intrigued. After that, it was the story of Larry David's private screening where he asked to stop it half way through because he was laughing too hard. Now, with every trailer I've seen I've become more and more excited about it… and now after reading Empire magazine's five star review I'm really anxious to see it when it's released in the UK next Wednesday (released in the US next Thursday).

I'm definatly going to watch this. Everything of it seems to hint toward awesomeness. I never saw the Ali G movie though but the television series can be pretty witty at times. And funny too!

I have to go see this one, I was laughing my ass off at the preview on Comedy Central the other night; the rodeo scene was insanely funny. "Please come see my film, if it not success, I will be executed."

I just saw it last night and in the words of Kirk Honeycut (Hollywood Reporter), "Borat has to be seen to be believed". Though I had read all the reviews I could find, as well as seen all the previews, nothing could prepare me for how ingeniously hilarious this film really is. From the opening right through to a completely UNBELIEVABLE climax (let's just say Pamela Anderson is a truly great sport), I couldn't stop laughing, at times so hard that I was unable to breathe. It soon becomes nearly impossible to tell what has really been staged and what hasn't… but words alone cannot describe it's brilliance, I urge everyone to go and see this as soon as they can (opens in the US tonight).

It will surely go down in history as one of the greatest comedy movies ever made, and is certainly the funniest movie of the year (the only one that even came slighty close was Clerks II), and very possibly the best satire of the decade, following the 60's Dr. Strangelove, the 70's Life of Brian, the 80's This is Spinal Tap, and the 90's South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut.

..unless it's a talk show, in which case the host treats Cohen like he's the character. But that's what I like about him, he's like those old style movie actors who stayed in character even during interviews.

I saw this movie earlier today with my father and sister; we all had high expectations for it, but it turned out to be absolutely vile. God-awful, nasty, brutish; few words can describe how utterly crude this movie is.

The first attacking point is that, as I said, the movie is very carnal; much of the humour focuses around Borat being a genuine dumbarse around people, causing mischief and mayhem and massive destruction that leads to the desecration of people's lives. He's literally exploited almost everyone he's come in contact with.

At that, the utter disgusting humour would have made me puke had I swallowed any food prior to watching such a travesty; there's one scene where Borat walks in on his producer, masturbating (yes, ON SCREEN) to a picture of Pamela Anderson, where Borat promptly starts to wrestle him naked, and the producer sticks his fat smelly arse in Borat's face.

Honestly, none of that low-brow crack is funny at all, and given Borat's politically incorrect representation of the Kazhakstani people is demeaning, people are basically praising this guy for being a "douche" in the most extreme sense of the word.

Sure, if the humour was intelligent like with Yakov Smirnoff, I'm sure I would have liked it better; but, it's not. It's more putrid than even the grimiest movie I could ever imagine.

I title it an cosmic, universal and eternal failure. If Borat would have wanted me to give him stars for this picture, I would do so most gladly, but only with a black eye too.

This is probably the funniest movie I have ever seen. Sure it's making fun of how people are dumbasses and it's extrememly racist, but that's what I love about it.

So many funny moments. I need to watch the dvd, I saw it when it was in the theathers. I could see how it's not for some people. But damn such a funny movie. I loved it.

Terek and Greg pretty much sum it up. I hated this movie. Hated, hated, hated it. It was annoying to boot. It's another example of how America's taste in cinematic humor has downgraded in recent years.

And the character of Borat is one of the most boring, dull, uninteresting characters I've ever seen.

This is one of the most overrated films in existence, right next to Animal House and The Big Lebowski.

I say blame Brits for the bad taste of humour. I have yet not seen the movie… it really seems to divide opinions. The trailer was pretty funny, and people at Cannes liked it and yet there are lots of individuals who says it's absolutely horrid.

My hypothesis is that people are so fed up with the "political correctness" movement that they're willing to flaunt praises over this show since it basically pisses on the grave of it. Now, that's all well and good; I myself am an adamant opponent to the PC movement since I think it's gotten out of fudging control; if Borat managed to spoof that intelligently I think I would have approved it.

But, that's not what I got at all. If you've seen The 40 Year Old Virgin, it's an exponentially more insipid movie without the "happy ending". Really, this movie isn't funny at all for people with any sense of manners; it basically recycles old stock jokes (like, "JEWS = TROLLS LOL" or "horses pulling cars, everyone's incestual") and all that.

Heck, Borat even knows this and does a segment early on when a "joke professor" attempts to tutor Borat on what is funny in America. He pulls off the same 'joke' he made in the beginning of the show: "hurh hurh hurh, my sister is the fourth best prostitute in Kazhakstan, and I screw her every night".

"That's not funny in America".

I don't mind sick or disgusting humor myself. I just don't like it when it's there just to shock someone. I guess that's why I wasn't a big fan of the Jackass phenomenon.

I haven't seen the film and to be honest, some clips I saw look pretty funny!

But ever since he started the character, just looking/listening to it has always screamed Yakov for the 21st Century to me.

That's what drew me in as well. One of the segments I saw was Borat talking to three feminazis, which was hysterical since it was intelligently funny! As I might (?) have said earlier, there was a simmilarly great scene where Borat is in front of this rodeo in Texas (?) I believe, and he goes "I is Borat S– from Kazhakstan, I is here to learn from your culture, let me say I support the troops in Iraq". The crowd roars. "The United States wll kill all terrorists!" The crowd roars louder. "President Bush WILL DRINK THE BLOOD OF EVERY IRAQI MAN, WOMAN, AND CHILD". The crowd screams!

Now, that is comedy. But seeing as segments like Borat getting all teary-eyed over a porn with Pamela Anderson since he realizes she's not a virgin, and after a bunch of drunken white crackers start bashing on minorities and Borat egging them on FILL UP THE ENTIRE FILM, it's not worth a watch unless one is a prosecuting attorney.

The only funny parts in the film were the rodeo, the feminazi bash, and the New York train incident where Borat's suitacase opens up and this chicken comes out. And, maybe the kissing random people bit, but since he does that to every god-dang person in the film it gets old as soon as he leaves New York.

He's not nearly as intelligent or authentic as Yakky, I can tell you that. Yakky is also pretty patriotic toward the US and holds some reverence for this country; he painted a mural for 9/11 if I recall. Cohen? Heck, he pretty much equated the US with his exaggerated (and fake) post-Soviet sattelite nation Kazhakstan in the film. Or so I've been told; I didn't get any of that, I only saw Borat acting like a typical dumbase.

Jackarse was a funny show, though. When I was seven years old.

When I was young, 'PC' was something that had more or a Liberal association. It was basically used for racial or sexual referrences. If you called someone a 'fag' or the 'n word' you weren't being 'PC'.

Now it seems to have switched positions to being a Conservative association and if you 'have' to mention 'God' or state that you actually like your own country (imagine that) it's called being 'PC'.

I dun get how these terms stealthily change sides without the majority of people realizing it.

That's still largely true today. The PC movement was going on because minority populations in the US were skyrocketing and people didn't know how to deal with them outside of what they learned through television, which was already a distorted look at minorities already (even "positive" ones like The Karate Kid, a movie my Dad loves but I have never seen).

PC still deals with sexual stuff, but it's much, much, much more touchy on religion now than on racial slurs and the like. It's ironic, though, given the mass media (such as Viacom's MTV) focuses on a sub-culture of opressed, suffering black folk who use the term "nigger" because the term has been used to call them all their lives, dresses 'em up and glorifies them on television so it becomes something "cool" to be emulated.

Like the baggy pants thing. When did baggy become cool? The apocryphal myth is that black children were forced to wear hand-me-downs from their parents; but, that's actually a myth cultured by popular television! The truth is some big-wig corporate guys arbitrarily decided on a new fashion to promote that they could tie-in with black culture.

In response to this, the PC movement went further but now it's out of control. As in, there's a dude who I heard of near my school (from my school?) who threw a fit because some guy thought he was a Mexican but he was really Egyptian so he spoke to him in Spanish for directions.

Now, that's outrageous.

I agree; PC seems almost mandatory nowadays. For some reason, though, feminism is still a liberal trait but I would have thought it conservative by now.

Cohen is somehow always able get people to say the most weirdest things. That's what I loved about Ali G Show. What I didn't never care about though was that… bottom humour.

The media hype was through the roof for this one. I haven't bothered to watch it (its out on video, right?) or any of its previews for that matter.

Malintex_Terek's description on the type of humor is kind of disheartening though. Its causing disturbing images of Freddy Got Fingered to resurface (although I don't think its THAT bad…)

I guess I'll try to avoid this one.

There's ONE scene that isn't even low brow, it's just bad. The hotel thing. It was really a shame how pointless and nasty that was, since the rest is actually very good. That's what people can just point to if they have weak stomachs and blame the whole film.

Two things: you gotta realize that laughing at a mean joke will not make you an asshole, and they're at the expense of the people he meets, who are honestly just as crude as Borat himself. That scene with the college kids, I mean, that was probably one of the funniest bits.
