Here's AICN's review of the film.
One Piece The Movie - The Desert Princess and the Pirates
-

yes? :O
-
@Yuugi's:
Oh snap, YT some clips ASAP!
Very sorry to say that I don't have the equipment for such a thing. The most I can do is nab screenshots.
-
-
@Brad:
I wasn't referring to that.
Oh, after rereading your post I understand. Well I'm sure that if One Piece goes well, they'll dub all the movies.^^
-
So I went to my theater, and they changed the time for 12:30 tomorrow. Oh well, I wasted a smidge of gas. That would suck so hard for those who drove 50 + miles to see it.
-
I saw the movie today, at noon. When I got to the theatre, exactly at noon (It took awhile since it was so far away and I did not know how to get there), I walked in and saw two people. They were about 16, and we started talking instantly, since we knew we were deep one piece fans. They asked me if anyone else was coming, but i said that I think we were all. They heard about the movie from the funi website, and lived right in brooklyn, so they were lucky. We shouted out alot of spoilers (since they told me they watch the subs) before the movie began. Other people came a few minutes earlier, an asian couple (they didnt speak to us). Then, later, another two people, boy and girl, and some lady came, sitting in the back. We were the only talkative fans there. I also told them someone said they may come in a luffy outfit, which they thought was awsome.
The End

Damn seemed liek you had a good time, that was more people than I expected to be in any of the theaters, wish i coulda gone.
-
Was the movie showing today? I have been at work all day and didn't really remember the date.
Would have liked to go just for the chance of running into some One Piece fans. -
There's one more showing at 12:00pm, today, I hear. But it's from Feb. 7th to 10th.
-
I'm confused. The website for the Carmike theatre in Columbia, South Carolina still says the showing is 2:00 PM. Should I be worried about the time being different when I drive up there tommorow ? :wassat: I just wanna be sure, because I obviously don't wanna drive over an hour away for nothing. =(

The boy and girl were me and my gf. :)
We would've been on time, but had some problems with the subway. -
I'll be going to the movie at 1:00 today if I can wake my lazy ass up and hopefully it will be worth it.
-
I'm gonna be seeing it today at noon. Hopefully I'm not the only one there.
-

We would've been on time, but had some problems with the subway.yeah, me too. There was some construction thing going on with the trains, so I had to get off one stop before, and had to run to the theater to get there on time. But, luckily I didn't get lost like I thought I would.

I watched the English dub of this film Saturday afternoon and the cinema was totally dead. There were a total of four people who watched it, including myself, my friend and an uninterested looking mother who was probably dragged there by her kid. So as far as a cinema going experience goes, it wasn't nearly as good for me as it was for some others here.
I'm not going to bother critiquing the film itself with any kind of depth because anyone who wants to see the film can do so already. I will say, however, that it definitely doesn't rank as one of the better One Piece films for me because it really wasn't that good.
With that said, I do think that Funimation did a good job with the dub of this film. The Strawhats' voice actors are really settling into their roles well, though I do think that Brina Palencia as Chopper is just a tad too high pitched. He sounds too much like a little girl to me, not a young boy. Vivi's voice was great and I think that Caitlin Glass did a phenomenal job; she easily delivered one of the best performances in the entire film, in my opinion. I cannot wait to hear her dubbing over the full Alabasta arc from the anime. Todd Haberhorn as Khoza was alright, not nearly as good as Caitlin, but good enough, and I honestly preferred Kevin Connolly as Pell over his original seiyuu. John Swasey as Crocodile was good as well; he really excelled at sounding condescending and delivering his attack lines. For the most part the voices were all very good, so kudos to the English voice actors.
The only voice I didn't care for was Mr. 2 Bon Clay's. I think it would have been better if Barry Yandell dropped the faux English accent and just stuck with an exaggerated tone and cadence for his voice instead. It wasn't terrible, but I personally didn't care for it and thought that it could have been handled a lot better.
Eric Vale's script was very good, in my opinion. The dialogue sounded natural and it wasn't toned down for television like the current episodes are, so I think it was a good indication of what the uncut episodes may sound like. They even translated "okama" into "cross-dresser" instead of the more benign "ballerina". There are a few things that I didn't care for, but. First of all, I don't understand why they decided to pull an R-L switch with Vivi's surname, Nefertari. The few times I heard it said on screen it sounded like Nefeltari, not Nefertari, and that makes no sense to me given that the original name with the R was clearly done on purpose for a reason. Second, I also thought that Pell's manner of speech was a little too informal; Pell in the Japanese has a very formal, polite way of speaking and I always saw that as an aspect of his regal character, but in the English version he's a lot more casual.
I don't know if this was a script thing or a performance thing, but Miss Father's Day also lost her distinctive laugh, as did Jaguar D. Saul. Instead, Miss Father's Day had a typical "oh-ho-ho-ho-ho!" laugh interspersed with a few ribbits and unless I missed it, Saul's "dereshishishi" laugh was cut out entirely.
Overall I thought the Funimation dub was very good and in and of itself very worthwhile, as was taking the time to see the film on the big screen. It was just too bad that it was movie eight. I understand the logic behind that choice, but it really isn't one of the better One Piece films. Movie four would have been a much better choice, in my opinion, for a variety of reasons.
Note: if anything in this post sounded odd or out of place, that's probably because it was altered from a post that I originally wrote for another forum. Also, if I made any mistakes over who voiced what character, I apologize in advance and feel free to correct me.
-
I don't think "dereshishishi" was in the film to begin with.
I dunno, the way it went if I can remember back to NYAF is that people said:
It wasn't in the film in the original. Or that there was no laugh in the dub. I don't have the original to check, so meh.
-
I don't think "dereshishishi" was in the film to begin with.
I just checked my old raw rip to make sure that I was remembering it right, and he did laugh. It was right before the second part of his voice over while the flag was waving, at around 1:20:42-45. I'm all but absolutely certain that he didn't laugh in the dub, though. Not that that's a bad thing or something that takes away from the dub, mind you, it's just something that I noticed was absent.
-
Well if it was in the original, it wasn't in the dub. I remember in one of them he did not laugh at all.
-
Well if it was in the original, it wasn't in the dub.
Uhh, yeah. I already said that. The fact that it's noticeably in the Japanese track but not in the English was the reason why I pointed it out. But again, I do not think that detracts from the dub at all as the dub was very good overall.
-
Probably because most people already knew who Saul was in Japan when they went to see the movie.
FUNi probably didn't know the laugh had any significance.
-
I saw it. there were actually about 10-15 people there.
-
Just came back from the movies.
My buddy and I were the only ones there for about 5 minutes, then a girl wearing Chopper's hat walked.
Then a few more people came in. There was about 10.
I thought the movie was good, and it was nice seeing the Alabasta arc dubbed with Funi voices. My favorite line has to be "Pervert power!"
And I think I got my buddy into One Piece.
-
My friend and I saw it at the Toms River Marquee. He doesnt know a thing about OP except Zoro, and the Crocodile fandub audition I did. It was us, and two other people in the theater.
We laughed at Vivi all the time, because it's Vivi. I noticed Collen as Miss Merry Christmas instantly, but not as Miss Fathers Day. He had a few questions, mainly dealing with what the hell happened with Robin and how the hell Pell survived. And of course, the whole D. thing. It wasn't oscar worthy, but it was good. Funi did a great job. Croc's voice could have been a little deeper, but I liked it. And Robin was perfect here. My pal enjoyed Sanji a lot.
Best part: Usopp's fart. We fell on the floor laughing. And Pervert Power. He also found the end credits hilarious, since none of the creatures appeared in the film.
Oh, of course we laughed at the Fan Service and the bit where it looks like Usopp has a huge dick.
I liked it. Cant wait to get the DVD.

I just got back from the theatres. There was only one other person there beside me. He was kinda a big guy, he wasn't very knowledgable of the movie, seeing that he asked me if it was animated or live action before we even saw it. He was nice though, didn't talk to him much after that. I did want to meet more people. but whatever. Anyway, I loved the movie. I guess the dub, animation and the awesomeness of seeing it in theatres really enhanced the experience for me. and clouded my previous opinion of what I thought it was. It really isn't that bad. There was occasional swearing, which was nice to hear. So here's to revised dialouge on the uncut Skypiea DVDs. Hearing Zoro called Zoro was cool to, as was seeing Sanji with his cigarette, and the Nami fanservice.^^ I really think that anyone(well, anyone who isn't a total doosh) who has a distaste for the current dub would've had a different opinion after watching this movie. You can tell that the actors have gained a lot more experience with their characters by the time they dubbed this movie, the game to. Which I didn't expect, since it seemed like they'd announced the aquisition of both at the same time they started dubbing the early episodes. I can now say that Zoro couldn't of had a better voice actor. His voice is nothing like what it was in the earlier dub episodes. It's not nearly as deep, it's like a whole different voice. It sounds very natural and is a joy to listen to. I also loved Nami's voice, and Luffy's acting was damn near perfect. I'm really starting to like him, now I have the ideal English voices to imagine when reading the manga. I'm also glad that the voices and acting quality that we'll hear on the Season one boxset will be similar to what was in this movie, since it is one of their later One Piece productions. I'll be buying the movie DVD and can't wait for the boxsets.
-
One guy, I noticed, was whistling Compass on his way out of the bathroom. XD
I liked the "Pervert Power" line and when Zoro and Nami were chased by Mr 1 and Ms. Doublefinger, when Nami said "I am the real Princess Vivi!" and then Zoro said "I thought I was Vi- I mean, I'm the real Vivi!"
-
How do they pronounce 'Zoro'? Is it 'Zo-ro' or 'Zor-o'?
-
@Yuugi's:

Hmm… More the latter.
-
I wonder how Compass sounds in English..

Well, we won't know until the DVD comes out apperenlty. Since it was just left in Japanese at the theatre showing, yet they claimed to have dubbed it. I can't wait to hear it.
-
So it's been a while since OP got a good dub, so I'm wondering, ratings wise, how is it doing on CN? Same, better etc?
-
@Yuugi's:
How do they pronounce 'Zoro'? Is it 'Zo-ro' or 'Zor-o'?
"Zorro", like the masked swordsman.
-
Oh great, that's just horrible. Somebody tell Sabat otherwise at a con. PLEASE!!!
-
I preordered the dvd yesterday. My dad said since it is realeased on the 19th that it can take up to two more weeks after its released to get to our house. Im kinda pised but it makes the wait make me think it will be better.
-
Well, we won't know until the DVD comes out apperenlty.
nope
Many people already have the DVD..
Oh great, that's just horrible. Somebody tell Sabat otherwise at a con. PLEASE!!!
Just give it up..
It seems we can't have everything :x
-
How many different ways CAN you pronounce Zoro?! >.< I can only get ONE real way out of it. I just think Zolo but just give the R sound. =/
-Zera
-
Actually I've heard a dubbie pronounce it Zah-ORO. Like Zathera
-
If the closing song was dubbed, I can't find it on my DVD.
-
I knew it
Funi lied… -_-
(sob)
-
Hmm, guess they didn't then. That kinda sucks, but oh well.
Maybe they said they were dubbing another song.
-
I pronounce it Zo-Ro since you need two z's to pronounce it Zor-O.
-
My friend, who is also a fan of One Piece, and I went to see the movie yesterday. When we got in the theater it was playing in, it was empty. So we both planned to have a ton of fun and act like idiots and yell and cheer on stuff in the movie. But then some creepy middle aged guy came in right before it started and ruined everything :(.
Ah well but the movie was absolutely amazing though. Well, not really the movie itself since it was horrible, but Funimation made it worth seeing. Less than half a year in their dub, and Funi has almost matched the quality of the Japanese voices. What a difference acting and script makes, Colleen as Luffy has a tone much like the 4kids one, but Colleen's Luffy managed to even give me chills in the delivery of her lines. Luffy has lost any frogginess in his voice and is now one of my favorite dub voices. Everyone else was incredible as well. Nami has always had one of the best dub voices and she was even better in the movie. Vivi was spot on and the complete polar opposite of 4kid's one. Zoro's voice is just badass. Usopp has always been my number one favorite and Sonny doesn't fail to disappoint here as well. Sanji has grown on me, and he can now easily do Mellorine mode and kill you mode effectively. Robin had zero bitchy lines in the movie and because of that she really was able to be phenomenal. Chopper has my least favorite voice but that just means that his voice is like a 8/10 instead of a 9-10/10.
I could go on about the rest of the voices besides the Strawhats but I would just be repeating "awesome" over and over with different synonyms. Anyway, if this movie is an indication of how the uncut DVDs are gonna be then Funi is gonna make me poor once their releases start coming out for sure.
-
Yeah, Mr. Bushidô's name should be pronounced the way the two Japanese names are pronounced.
-
@Yuugi's:
Oh great, that's just horrible. Somebody tell Sabat otherwise at a con. PLEASE!!!
How the hell is it horrible?
-
@AWB:
I pronounce it Zo-Ro since you need two z's to pronounce it Zor-O.
??
And to argue over the pronunciation of Zoro's name in an English dub is fucking ridiculous, in my extremely honest and professional opinion.
-
Who's arguing with anyone?
-
Well, if they can pronounce Masira correctly, why not Zoro? With the rolled 'r'. In fact, I can live without the rolled 'r' but 'Zor-o' not so much. I'm anal about it because I'm a student in my four semester of Japanese in high school, it bugs me. :D
-
@Lobster:
I knew it
Funi lied… -_-
(sob)
It's not even that good of a song anyways, imo.

raises hand same situation here.
…..
though, I preordered mine a week ago.

So I went all the way out to Minneapolis to see the movie. It was also playing in Eau Claire, which would have been closer, but my buds and I wanted to mingle with a fellow OP fan (since they're few and far between in central wisconsin). It's so lethargic, mingling with people about something you love that you can't really talk about with your other friends that aren't into it.
So as far as the movie goes, this was my first time seeing it. And for being a summary of the Alabasta arc, it's great! However, it's not great being a stand-alone movie. It's like being reminded of all the great stuff in the anime, even though some really good stuff (Ace, Smoker) was taken out.
However, the real demographic I think Funi was focusing on was marketing the movie to not only us faithful watchers of the series, but the 4kids viewers that are just starting to be exposed to what One Piece is really all about.
This movie wipes the slate clean of the travesty that was the Alabasta arc done by 4kids. Everything is left uncut, the blood has returned from gray to crimson, the green guns are brown, the lollipops are cigarettes, and Groundhog's Day is MerryChristmas. Everything regarding Alabasta is back to the way it should be! And we can't forget "Zoro" either!
Some of my favorite parts had to include when Luffy used the phrase "kick his ass", and Chopper said "Damn you, bastard". What can I say, I love the swearing.
Caitlin Glass is pretty good as Vivi, I didn't like her portrayal of young Vivi though. Something seemed off about that.
Otherwise, I liked just about everything I saw in the movie :D
-
Also, to whoever said Saul laughs in Japanese. He does.
Little loss there.
