Okay, for those that don't know their Chinese Mythology:

There are four gods of the seasons. Suzaku is the fiery Phoenix of the Summer, God of the South, represented by red. Byakko the White is the God of the West and Autumn. Seiryu, or Qin Long, is the Blue-Green Dragon of the East and the God of Spring. And Lastly is Genbu the Black, God of the North and Winter.

That said, it's safe to assume this is how the emperors work. Red-haired Shanks, Whitebeard, Blue-green "___" and Black "".

Now, let's focus in on one of those. The Blue-green. Notice any particular One Piece character that has Blue-green going on? That's right, none other than Buggy the Clown. Now, we all know that Buggy is not one of the 4 emperors (It's laughable to think so), but look at one of the men that Monkey D. Garp reveals to us. Looks like a clown, doesn't he? Perhaps Buggy's father?

It would make a lot of sense. Buggy grew up training with Shanks, one of the Emperors, he has met Whitebeard, and he has been to the Grand Line before. more than likely, Buggy's father could have introduced Buggy at a young age to the strongest man in the world, putting things in perspective for him. That would explain why Buggy is deathly afraid of Whitebeard, and also why Shanks and he would know each other and yet be on vastly different levels.

With that said, we could expect more of Buggy once we meet up with his father. Clown family reunion = good times, eh?

I know the mythology with the four gods but I don't know if I can agree with you on that theory…

I think that the two other emperors have something to do with characters we already know and your Buggy theory isn't that bad either but that with the four gods is in my opinion a little bit far-stretched right now because we don't know much about the emperors (like a special connection to the seasons and directions).

It could still have something to do with the colors though...

I start my research from a little consideration white-beard,and red-hair it wasn't for me a chance,but I was certain that there was an important reason…now we know that Edward Newgate "white-beard" and Shanks "red-hair" r members of the 4 emperors,the third power in one piece world....looking at the connection of the color and the number four I thought about the seasons..the direction north,south,west,est and I strat my research,here the result: FIRST LEGEND Emperor Huangdi Subdues Four Other Emperors In the early days of his reign, according to Chinese Legends, Emperor Huangdi was devoted to self-cultivation, he loved his people and had no interest in warfare. The Chinese Ledend tells how he finally sent Xiangwang, a careless absent-minded god, and Xiangwang found it. "It is really strange", the Emperor exclaimed, "that Xiangwang should have got it !" I reckon Oda took the inspiration from the same place as the mangaka he worked behind, Nobuhiro Watsuki, in Rurouni Kenshin?

There were four animals, Red bird, White… tiger?, Blue tortoise/snake(?), and Black something... which were the inspiration for the four stars, the bodyguards of Enishi Yukishiro's second in command (can't remember his name).

the "…" aren't really a problem here. a lot of people use it (like me :P) and that aren't always the people who don't have it as their first language...
it just helps to see the posts in a forum as a real conversation, if you know what I mean ^^°°

Interestingly, if we go by the colors in their nicknames, Shanks would fit with Suzaku, the Vermillion Bird of the North, while Whitebeard would correspond to Byakko, the White Tiger of the West. This opens up a whole avenue for speculation about the other two…

These gods are used a lot in other manga/anime/video games. Yu Yu Hakusho comes first to mind, as well as Last Blade.

The title "shitenou" (Four Heavenly Kings) is also commonly used with these gods in such series, hence why I was a bit surprised Oda used "yonkoh" instead. Then again, Marines describing pirates as "heavenly kings" wouldn't make much sense.

Like what you just said, Garp might refer to them as Yonkoh only because he's a high ranking Marine and doesn't like them (equivalent to "those four guys"), so Shitenou might not be out of the question just yet.

Oh, I wonder if the "blue emperor" is bluebeard? That'd be cool.

Also, …the black emperor, well, we have blackbeard already, but we know he's no emperor. I wonder if maybe, one of the unseen emperor's will "job" in the future, and Blackbeard will take his place? That'd be a surprise. Maybe unlikey, but one emperor does lose their "black pearl."

Anyway, it's funny how the legenday pirates, "whitebeard, blackbeard, bluebeard, etc" all relate to this legend, at least a little.

It was the Azure Dragon (Green?) of the East, Black tortoise of the North, White Tiger of the West, and the Vermillion bird of the south. They were also used in Digimon as the four gods who protect the Digi-World.

You know, I really like this idea because when White beard rejected Shank's letter that Rocksta gave him, Rocksta said "He's the Red Hair!" like it has some kind of pull over just the pirate name. White beard responded with "So, I'm the white beard" almost like it is a title as well.

I also seriously doubt Black beard is an emporer because the WG and resident shichibukai never heard of them when Lafeita nominated him for shichibukai.

The name meaning something more could be just because they are very strong well known pirates, or that could be significant of their emporerly status. Could be wrong bout that, but saying "he's the strawhat!" I think would get the speaker laughed at.

I like this idea of the four zodiac signs tying in with the four emperors. Suzaku (red bird) is described as being "noble in appearance and behaviour", that sounds pretty Shanks-ish. If this does turn out to be the case then my bet is the "grinning" figure being the tortoise/black and the one at the bottom, the dragon/blue.

If Oda isn't taking this route but is still colour-coding the emperors, then how about a "Jenny Greenteeth" character? Okay she's not a pirate, but a hideous, deadly and feared water-hag in legends with huge nasty teeth, big hair and eyes. (It'd be something different, and they did throw in Klabautermann after all.)

The Shichibukai are a play on the movie "The Seven Samurai". Oda said that he is a very big fan of that movie and that the Shichibukai are inspired by it.

Of course I only have that of the german translations of the file books but I really doubt that the translators screwed it that much up to create a totally new meaning. That´s actually why the german manga/anime have translated them as "Die sieben Samurai der Meere" which means "The seven Samurai of the Seas". It most definitely is not the proper translation for Shichibukai but at least it shows that they at least do a little bit of research when namings are concerned. Hope that answers your question somehow.
