I mean, come on. Most of us (well, except maybe Octogon) were expecting Luffy's grandpa to be Gold Roger, or for Dragon to save them from the marine ships.
Or for Usopp not to come back, 'cos, y'know, it's obvious he'll return.

No Oda isn't. One Piece like all manga except for that ONE occasion in DBZ. The main character always beats the main villan. The only exception is Gohan vs Cell.

at that point, I didn't think Gohan became the main character in the first place…. because his father Goku was still around, except that he was in heaven......
Why you say Oda isn't a surprising mangaka is beyond me, when he regularly throw plot twists and storyline shocker to the fans.......

i thought neither. most people thought neither for that matter.
taichi,u are totally ignorant. If Oda isnt one of the most(or THE most) surprising manga author, and one of the best,i dont know who is.

The only exception is Gohan vs Cell.<–- wtf?how many thousands of manga around, and you DARE say there is only 1 exception?did u read every single manga ever existed?just further shows your ignorance.By the way, learn how to spell villain, its not villan, before u start insulting one of the greatest mangaka around.

Perhaps the ignorance lies with you. What he is saying is that most of the manga is fairly predictable, except for the several plot twists. Luffy has indeed beaten the main villain every time. Instead of flaming him for not knowing any mangas, I think it would be neat if you could point out an incident where the main character did not beat the main villain.
It's a pretty big notion to say someone is the best at something, and seeing as we all love One Piece(I should hope), we may sometimes tend to be biased on matters like this. ODA FTW.
Oda isn't some omnipotent god of literature; no person is. However, his story greatly varies from cliche scenarios in the shounen genre. Of course, the shounen archetypes are all there, but that's a given – removing them would remove it from the shounen genre itself.
z0mGz oDa iz S000 KnoT sUrPrIsAble, KeKEKek…. aLL mAnGAS gO "fOrWaRd" In TimE! nO1 dIFFerNt, HuHUhU...
....seriously....
Oda is certainly one of the better mangaka, but I wouldn't put him on THAT high of a pedestal.
To be honest, it's probably because we read this manga so actively that we think that. I barely read manga outside of One Piece, so this is the most surprising thing ever.
But it is surprising….and Oda did a good job of making it surprising.
Still though, I'd give the honor of "most surprsing" to the Twilight Zone…if it were a manga. Really, who would have though that guy was the devil? Wowsers!
well I can think of one Moment in Berserk that is stil the most surprsing manga moment I've read
Shonen Jump mangaka are NOT by practice unpredictable. But Tite is more surprising than Kubo. This is only true I'm guessing because OP has gone for so much longer.

My thoughts exactly.
Oda has certain done a number of suprising moments, such as the recent chapter, but I wouldn't say the most surprising ever. As already stated, such an acomplishment would be impossible.

I disagree, I look at Oda compared to men as men compared to the other animals.
I wouldn't say he's the most suprising, but he's pretty up there when in being unpredictable.
The only times I can say I was flat out shocked was when that ship fell from the sky, Sogeking, and monster Chopper.
^ I'll agree with those moments Taboo, and yeah, Oda's pretty much the master of unpredictability. I nearly fell out of my chair when I first saw Kakuraffe. So, while he does have his surprising moments, I wouldn't say he's the most surprising mangaka ever. I pretty much only read shonen, so most of it's pretty predictable (particularly Naruto and Bleach).
As I see it, the best in history are as follows:
1. Osamu Tezuka
2. Fujiko F. Fujio
3. Shotaro Ishinomori
4. Kentaro Miura
5. Yoko Kamio
6. Naoko Takeuchi
7. Takehiko Inoue
8. Akira Toriyama
9. Nobuhiro Watsuki
10. Eiichiro Oda
Oda's a long way from being "the BEST" but he's dang good as is.
I'm surprised you put Watsuki as #9
for me it goes
1. Hirohiko Araki
2. Yoshihiro Togashi
3. Nobuyuki Anzai
4. Kouta Hirano
5. Naoki Urasawa
6. Jyoji "George" Morikawa
7. Kentaro Mirua
8. Eiichiro Oda
hes up there indeed but not at the top
Nice try, I really understand where it comes from, but most suprising Manga is Gantz. Because anyone can fucking die at any time. I am often suprised that someone LIVES.

I couldn't think of anyone else, since I was deadset on putting Oda at #10 and my knowledge of manga-ka is pretty limited. I suppose Gosho Aoyama would have been a better pick, but I'm not sure if he's the first guy to come out with solid detective stories, and I know Yaiba borrows a lot from DB.

I agree for the most part, except
! for the fact that the seven dragonballs = 100 points, so to speak, but gantz has been one of the most unpredictable manga ever. One Piece avoids shonen cliches and is fun, not most original ever though.
Berserk was pretty hard to predict (besides the most basic plot premise of guts vs. griffith)
U know what this will make me sound like a total OPtard, but Oda is easily my favorite mangaka of all time. I've read almost all of the most famous mangas by the mangakas you guys have mentioned. The ones I haven't read are JoJo's, Kamen Rider, and the majority of Astro Boy (just wasn't my thing back then). I also never touched Yoko Kamio's stuff cuz it was too girly for me heh.
I'm 20 now, and I grew up in Hong Kong reading mangas like Doraemon, DB & DBZ, Ranma, Yu Yu Hakusho. I loved all of these as a kid, and still adore these mangas now. Though, I think OP trumps all of them in freshness (originality & bizarre factor) as well as drama. My main reason for praising Oda so much is that he is so good at crafting lovable characters. All of his characters are so rich and entertaining, and it's not imbalenced at all (not like DBZ where one person gets all the juice). It's also got some of the most poignant scenes in any manga I've ever read, but of course it's lacking in intensity when compared to the stuff in seinen manga. That's why I think Shonen mangakas should be categorized distinctly from Seinen manga.
Right now my favorites are Berserk, Vagabond, Eden, and I suppose Shamo is pretty cool as well. These manga have an obvious advantage over the Shonen manga because their material can be sooooo much more intense. Just the violence and sex factor alone makes it so much more gritty. Not to mention THE CRAZIEST ART. These mangakas are awesome. No doubt about it, but I think Oda has produced a manga that is just as enjoyable, but with the simplicity of shonen mangas. So far, all of his material has been kept so fresh, never getting old for me. I don't always like what he does with the character favoritism, but I think all his characters are so likable that I never mind too much. Anyway, yeah this is just my opinion.
