yes, but a lot of it only really came to light late on, by which point most people just wanted it to stay in the past and be forgotten.

To illustrate how bloody Operation Downfall was expected to be, the United States has been awarding Purple Hearts out of the stockpile that they prepared for that invasion since the 1940s and still have over a hundred thousand of them left over.
I can't recall the number of predicted Japanese casualties, but I think it was in the five-ten million range.

You know, my step father's side's great-grandparents had their properties taken from them and thrown into concentration camps.
Despite having their sons enlisted in the US military, and being US citizens.

Second world war was full of warcrimes by all sides, Germany and Japan followed by Soviet Union were worst offenders but every nation and faction was guilty for them, not very glorious time for mankind. The atrocitys and massacres commited during entire war would fill entire librarys.
Hiroshima/Nagasaki and mass bombings of german towns were actually not even that big atrocitys compared to some special events taking in place at Eastern front, although US should not take pride of nuking Hiroshima it was still perhaps least bloody option, Japan was filled with bushido spirit willing to fight to the last for honor of their nation and emperor, Operation Downfall would caused millions japanese death and complete destruction of japanese infastructure, Japan would perhaps never recovered from such war.

So we can have "World" Series, homegrown reliance on our own pop culture in regards to music and films and stuff, not see parts of our own country for our whole lives before even worrying about not seeing something outside.

And it only really hit me how self-sustainable we are when I was in Europe and how for tinier nations they almost can't be like that, so naturally a more global perspective develops.

Wow those people are idiots. Although I have to wonder if he kep everyone he filmed in, or just chose the people who were most willing to listen, talk, or if he chose people based on the answers they gave or what. I think some of my favorites are the people who thought Japanese people all wear Kimonos, and have those straw hats and use fott binding (Which I'm pretty sure was never a Japanese thing in the first place. Pretty sure that was entirely China, and while it might still happen in isolated rural regions today, it's nowhere near a common practice anymore). And honestly, I'm surprised some of these people didn't catch on and answer Japan when they weren't sure given the nature of the questions.

I experienced bizarro Western Europe, with people going like "Are you British?" and seeming happier when I said I was American lol.
