How surreal is it that I'm just thinking about how glad I am that my route to work is along I-95 and not the Merrit Parkway which runs right next to Sikorksy in the north of town.

Not too surreal. Monrovia is literally one town over from where I have my Asperger's meeting, and I've passed through it to get to another town before.
-
I think everyone went through this in the aftermath of 9-11, but I remember that flurry of "OUR TOWN WILL BE NEXT FOR SO AND SO REASON". People kept going on and on about Sikorsky, and even at age 13 I was a skeptical little guy and laughed at them for thinking our little New York metro jigsaw piece could possibly get that kind of attention.
And then last year that bomb guy….and now we get your neighboring town having direct threats from Al Qaeda for reasons of military aircraft manufacturing.

Stop being paranoid you got Atlantic ocean protecting you for christ sake.

Stop being paranoid you got Atlantic ocean protecting you for christ sake.
I'm way the fuck on the other side of the country away from smelly terrorist land or whatever shit Fox is spouting and these threats to a nearby town are from ONE OF OUR OWN FUCKING RESIDENTS!!
Chrissakes I went to college in Riverside, and that town's ultra conservative to boot!
Location is starting to matter less.
Also (and I mean this will all due respect to New Yorkers, New Englanders and such) the Atlantic did a totally good job protecting us from the 9/11 attacks. 9_9 -
Don't you have a crippling financial crisis to worry about instead of posting literally the stupidest shit ever Shandian?

Why should I worry about something like that? Not much I can do about it.
Atlantic did a totally good job protecting us from the 9/11 attacks. 9_9
Well your oceans have protected your pretty nicely for last 100 years no? Besides 9/11 stunt can only be pulled once…when security was tightened such attack would be impossibly to repeat. Biggest problem on attacking america specially with poor equipment Al Qaeda can muster is how to get their operatives to american continent for first place...
USA could happily join both world wars without fear of retaliation because logistical nightmare of carrying meaningful attacks over 3000 miles of empty sea. Same reason why Britain has been never been invaded since viking raids even though both Napoleon and Hitler were desperate to do so..only because almost stonethrow strech of water...
Only thing those damn terrorists Al-qaeda nutjobs can do for you is meaningless threats ands seeing how you are shitting your pants everytime its pretty damn effective no?
-
Well your oceans have protected your pretty nicely for last 100 years no?
They haven't done shit since the era of major overt wars ended with WW2.
The Soviet Missile Crisis and 9/11 are more threatening then anything that's happened to Greece in regards to attacks. Your location is damned charmed these days, unless you're the paranoid one here and believe in Neo-Ottomans. Or those DREADED FYROM CULTURE ROBBERS!!!
Besides 9/11 stunt can only be pulled once…
Well clearly we're safe now that planes can't be flown into buildings!
As that's the only way to make a major terrorist attack.when security was tightened such attack would be impossibly to repeat.
You have no goddamn idea what you're talking about huh.
That Times Square bomb was foiled by a mix of poor construction and a street vendor noticing smoke.Biggest problem on attacking america specially with poor equipment Al Qaeda can muster is how to get their operatives to american continent for first place…
AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA, I'm not even gonna dignify this. You live in a fantasy world.
USA could happily join both world wars without fear of retaliation because logistical nightmare of carrying meaningful attacks over 3000 miles of empty sea.
Yeah, that sure stopped the Russians from aiming nukes at us from Cuba. And sure is relevant to terrorism, which is ever so similar to Nazi war machines.
Same reason why Britain has been never been invaded since viking raids even though both Napoleon and Hitler were desperate to do so..only because almost stonethrow strech of water…
How can anyone be making this comparison and being so fucking clueless as to what the problem is.
Only thing those damn terrorists Al-qaeda nutjobs can do for you is meaningless threats ands seeing how you are shitting your pants everytime its pretty damn effective no?
Shut the fuck up you ignorant shit.

What the hell are you rambling?
Well clearly we're safe now that planes can't be flown into buildings!
As that's the only way to make a major terrorist attack. Then why they havent done it again if it is so super effective? High-jacking commercial airplane these days are like taking candy from a child right?
You have no goddamn idea what you're talking about huh.
That Times Square bomb was foiled by a mix of poor construction and a street vendor noticing smoke.Ah yes the dreaded Times Square 'bomb'… why did you take that for an example? Surely there must be other terrorist attacks on USA to refer here? One failed car-bomb in entire war against terror? Damn you guys have it tough there...I feel ya.
AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA, I'm not even gonna dignify this. You live in a fantasy world.
If Al-Qaeda is so powerful then why it hasnt done ANYTHING besides that one failed car bomb in almost decade after 9/11? They bomb Madrid and London but why not US citys? I guess they consider europe greater threat…
Yeah, that sure stopped the Russians from aiming nukes at us from Cuba. And sure is relevant to terrorism, which is ever so similar to Nazi war machines.
Then why the hell russians had to come all the way to Cuba to build their missiles? Perhaps because inter-continental ballistic missiles are 'a long shot' literally and 60's missile techonolgy wasnt that sophisticated yet. In order to get past hurdle of Atlantic and Pacific oceans they had to come right next to your front door and under your noses…very subtle way to not get noticed.
How can anyone be making this comparison and being so fucking clueless as to what the problem is.
You think Atlantic/Pacific ocean is meaningless protecting your daily life from all those nasty terrorists and dictators and situation would be excatly same even if they would share land borders with you. What I am trying to drill to your stubborn skull here is that greatest defence USA has against any hostile forces is its OCEANS, not US army, not navy, not patriotic act or even GOD but 4000 miles of open water…
Suprise attacks are impossible, not only nation who wants to harm american mainland need to have a strong sea fearing navy capable for long distance operations and there quite suprisingly few nations having those fleets and none of those nations would risk everything to just do light harm against USA.
Ballistic missiles? N-Korea is struggling to get their missiles reaching Japan and Iran's missiles can barely reach Israel...what they are gonna build their missiles to Cuba too?

Shandian isn't Greek. I think he's a Swede or a Fin. Don't shoot me if I'm wrong.
-
Shandian:
Terrorist attacks, suicide bombers. They need to get to a country to attack, true, but how do you diferentiate a terrorist from a normal person? It's not enough to say "he has a beard and is from afganistan".
Once the agent is infiltrated, they only need to wait to get the components for the bomb, to seize the targets, to study the vulnerabilities.
The oceans are usefull for defense against a direct militia. Why on earth would you think that terrorist are going to march in to USA? Or swim? or use a millitia at all?
One person is what's needed for these kind of attacks. The support team doesn't even need to be in the country.
-
He's not a monster, he's barely a dictator, but he's killing the economy and producing an exodus of brains, things that will make my future very hard.
Yep I feel ya Maxter, It's hard to believe in your politicians in such circumstances. Incompetent tools are not a Venezuelan thing, maybe that's why he's gravitating towards these same tools for recognition.
@Monkey:
They were the kind of friends that were tolerated more than great buds. Great buds of America are people like South Korea, Japan, UK, and most of Western Europe. The kind of countries whose participation in the Libya crisis made our defense secretary change his mind and opt to hold on to the fight because these are the nations that we've fought alongside with through thick and thin, and we have a duty to stand with them as NATO.
Our tolerance of Mubaraks and the like is more a matter of cynicism if anything, that this is the best the region has and there's not much we can do about it.
Which is being shaken to the core this year, which is nice really. The Arab world is destroying deeply held preconceptions of themselves as being alright with autocracy that had been held over by most of the world outside. As for the Sauds….the only reason people (it's hardly just the US lol) keep giving them head at their every request is a little something that should hopefully become irrelevant when some genius inventor solves the problem of their near monopoly.
Yeah I know what you mean real politics is a bitch, but you can't point the finger at someone who tries to do some real politics of his own, no matter how stupid or out of the box it is. I mean, untill he's stupid enough to start something crazy like a war or something.
-
Idiot Paradox
A theory that states that the more stupid a person is, the more intelligent they are likely to think they are. This is caused by their incredibly narrow perspective of the world making them think that they know a hell of a lot. For someone to understand that they are stupid requires a certain kind of enlightenment - that they know relatively little - that is unavailable to stupid people.
Therefore, it is impossible for a truly stupid person to be able to admit that they are stupid.

What the hell are you rambling?
What's the most manmade danger that's hit you since the 40's ended? That military coup?
Stalin didn't even want your ass in the first place. And if Mugiwara is right and you're from Scandinavia let's not even start on how much you need to shut up right now
Then why they havent done it again if it is so super effective? High-jacking commercial airplane these days are like taking candy from a child right?
Jesus christ you're a fucking mass of stupid, I can't even be sarcastic around you here.
Ah yes the dreaded Times Square 'bomb'… why did you take that for an example?
ahahahahaha, wow, this really shows how completely ignorant you are about terrorism.
"Hey! It didn't work that time!"
Like the whole psychology of living under it is completely foreign to you.
You're talking precisely like someone whose had the privlige of living somewhere that hasn't experienced violence anytime recently. And yet your sorry ass keeps acting like it's the other way around? Shut the fuck up.Surely there must be other terrorist attacks on USA to refer here? One failed car-bomb in entire war against terror?
That's it?? You think that's it?? That that was all that's happened since 9-11??
And you're trying to argue with me? You clueless uninformed fuck?
Hell even just having a 9-11, to assume that the natural response afterwards would be to shrug and think nothing will happened again, god you're such a sheltered little bitch.Damn you guys have it tough there…I feel ya.
You're going to be lucky if Robby, Taboo, or someone else doesn't ban you outright here.
If Al-Qaeda is so powerful then why it hasnt done ANYTHING besides that one failed car bomb in almost decade after 9/11? They bomb Madrid and London but why not US citys? I guess they consider europe greater threat…
Hey, would you like to start talking like a little whiny fuck to Spaniards and Brits now too about being "parrraaanoid!!!".
No seriously, where do you live.
Then why the hell russians had to come all the way to Cuba to build their missiles?
Yeah, it was so hard to get there. And they totally didn't take advantage of the fact that there was an enemy of the US that was not over in the old world with you, but geographically right the hell there next to Miami.
You're talking like it's the fucking 1600's or something.
In fact ALL your arguments are based on shit that doesn't even happened anymore that in no way threatens your hole in the wall in Greece or Finland or wherever the fuck you live.
All your arguments are acting incredulous that I don't think like we're living in the 1800's.You think Atlantic/Pacific ocean is meaningless protecting your daily life from all those nasty terrorists
It isn't protecting us from the terrorists you moron. You literally have no clue what terrorism even is.
You probably think 9-11 was some storming of our shores and airports.and dictators
You don't have to worry about jackshit in regards to dictators. What, is Lukashenko and his teetering Soviet theme park making you quake in your boots?
Hell his ass probably won't even be around in a year.and situation would be excatly same even if they would share land borders with you.
Do they share land border with you?
Suprise attacks are impossible,
Alright you know what, this kind of complete-fucking-retard argument where I have to explain even the fundamentals of basic logic something I'll put up with when it's hilarious and cute like with AlmostLegendary trying to convince me that all American left wing politics is Communism.
But not here, not here. You may be too stupid to have a sense of this, but too goddamn bad. -
Why should I worry about something like that? Not much I can do about it.

With Chavez I feel like he isn't playing realpolitik, so much as genuinely thinking Gaddafi and Mugabe are these great awesome guys with cool ideas and prospects. Like I actually believe he probably immediatly and unquestionably agreed with Mugabe when the latter said there wasn't a cholera epidemic in Zimbabwe, and than quickly agreed with him again when he later claimed it was caused by Western meddling. Because he actually believed it.
That's the kind of guy he comes off as, which is scarier than a Kissinger style souless pragmatobot who allies with anything regardless of morals.

Not sure how much of this is fear mongering from the left (to be clear, by this I refer to the way the left audience is described as a closed circuit, unassailable by anything but Fox and various right wing talking heads–and ask the question because both sides are gearing up for the fight of their lives) but good golly this woman is scary:

I am guessing Sarah Palin is having some serious competition.
-
Oh my… no wonder USA will not have a woman president. I'm saying that as a woman of course. The sad,sad thing is... both Palin and this new one are serious. Nothing is more fearsome than stupidity mixed with hard-work. But, at least they will make the campaign time more fun, right?

I am starting to wonder if professional mass media is turning into gossip magazines (I forgot Fox news exist). Are they only interested in people saying and doing stupid things ?
I am pretty sure that there are intelligent republicans and democrats. Shouldn't we focus on the more positive thing in life ?

Whats more positive then a mansion, your own private jet and a bank account in the Cayman Islands?

What about people who have interesting things to say on life. Couples that are faithful to each other. Parents showing unconditional love to their children, people that don't like to show off.
The gossip people may have all the money in the world but they tend to be nothing as persons.

What really annoys me is that the same bozos who pretend that idiots like Bachmann and Palin are qualified to be President are, almost to a person, the exact same people who hate Hillary Clinton and claimed that her becoming President would inevitably result in her being Bill's puppet.

I remember reading an article somewhere (Time?) that called Bachmann the future of the Republican party.

It is a bit of fear-mongering, but the RNC does want her to be the face of Republican Party, when I can name three candidates far more qualified for the job. It's because they think that the sole fact that the candidate is female will win them the election.
Still, the press is being way harsher on Bachmann than anyone else on the campaign trail on both sides. I mean, Newt Gingrich had a fantastic press release two weeks ago. Didn't see it at all.
Edit: All I remember is that it ended with "Newt's not in here with you, you're in here with Newt."

Actually terrible as they both are, I think we sort of broke through the mental block of "a woman president??? WHOA" in 08' after both Clinton and Palin were such huge contenders of sorts, (also the whole other barrier we broke then).
Never before had there been female candidates on that level, Geraldine Ferraro in the 80's hardly counts for both not becoming this giant media magnet even after the election, and well…because Reagan Vs. Mondale was a joke.
I think already, almost overnight Americans are now used to the IDEA of a female president. No one's even talking about Bachmann like "wiilikers! a vagina in the white house!!". Like we're over the general excitement and already it's a norm, conceptually. We're ready for a female president. Now if only she'd come along lol.
-
We just need a female nominee that isn't a stupid bimbo.
-
We just need a female nominee that isn't a stupid bimbo.
But then which powerful person would end up backing a candidate that's actually pro-choice?

Anyone else saw the verdict in the Casey Anthony trial earlier? CAn't believe she got off on murder but got convicted for lying to the police about the whereabouts of her child and the multiple times she changed her story saying it was an accident to saying her dad made it look like murder.

Nobody gives a shit.

I'm just tired of fucking hearing about this damn trial.
-
I didn't even know anything about this thing until a couple days ago.
-
This Casey Anthony whatever shouldn't even be receiving the amount media attention its getting in the first place.
A mother killing her own children for being autistic is more worthy of mainstream media attention then this. -
It wouldn't even be an issue in the first place if not for ghouls like Nancy Grace.
-
Ahm nancy grace and im mad about stupid crap!!!!
-
One of these days someone guilty is going to walk simply because lying Nancy Grace said he was.
When confronted, future law courses will show the video to show what a gigantic whore you'll look like if you don't even try to pretend to be shamed. -
@Cuddles:
One of these days someone guilty is going to walk simply because lying Nancy Grace said he was.
It probably happened here when it comes down to it; I doubt that the DA would have pushed forward with such a flimsy case to start with if not for internal pressure. Subtract braying morons like Nancy Grace with their constant baying for blood from the equation and they might have taken more time to construct a stronger case to prosecute on. As is, there had to be tremendous pressure to get on with it regardless of what they had to work with.
I certainly think that the jury probably approached this case differently than they would have otherwise, but, on the other hand, it might have made them actually take things into consideration that they might not have otherwise as well. So it might have actually made them do their job instead of just going with whatever outcome gets them out of the courtroom in the shortest amount of time.
-
The biggest problem here was that there wasn't strong enough evidence to get the murder conviction.
All they had was circumstantial, which if the prosecution can sell it right can be enough, but here it wasn't.
Because we believe in innocent until proven guilty, the evidence has to be strong enough to convince the jury beyond reasonable doubt, but it wasn't.
I heard this case being described elsewhere as the modern day OJ trial, which is completely true. All we need is for one line that sums up the trial, and for her to publish a book a few years from now called "If I did it."
-
I will never forget the day OJ was found not guilty. My God. There are some things for which there are no words. Then the violence and rioting, Rodney King. Horrendous times.
-
@Ubiq: Wow, the fact that the attorney's office might have actually been influenced by the media circus….
God DAMMIT!
Actually bothers to look up the Caylee Anthony case on wiki
I....don't even know.
I'm glad I don't have T.V. anymore, and that even before then I barely watched these kind of news anyway. Was there even a reason for so much coverage?
If they absolutely had to focus on a murder of a little girl, the media would've been better off focusing on those minutemen who killed that one girl in Arizona
I don't know, this is just too confusing. It's like the kid's death was just sold to the public, which is pretty disgusting.
And look at this shit:
Regarding Casey Anthony, Kathleen Zellner, a defense attorney outside of the case, said Casey Anthony can never return to the life she once had. "I'm sure people will offer her money, book deals — she may in that way profit from this," she stated. "But emotionally her life has been destroyed. Her child is dead and her parents have been injured, I don't know how you put that back together. … People will always believe that she's guilty." Was the lawyer paying attention to what she was saying at all?!
How emotionally destroyed can you be if you decide to profit from it?
Granted it hasn't happened yet, but if she in any way lapped up the attention from all this, she not only will, but will also officially become even more slimy than Sarah Palin. At least she paraded her kids around alive. -
The biggest problem here was that there wasn't strong enough evidence to get the murder conviction.
All they had was circumstantial, which if the prosecution can sell it right can be enough, but here it wasn't.
Again, subtract the media circus and I doubt that they even try to convict on any murder charges at this point. The lying to investigators might have went to trial, but I doubt that any of the murder charges would have. Now, as is, if something conclusive does come up, they can't charge her for anything major since it would be double jeopardy. Well, provided that the jury wasn't tampered with in some fashion.
@Cuddles:
Was there even a reason for so much coverage?
Nancy Grace latched onto it for whatever reason and covered it so obsessively that other news organizations picked up on it in typical sheeplike fashion. One of the problems with modern media is that people who have zero business calling themselves journalists in the first place can wind up creating major news stories simply because they're popular or even just have name recognition. Drudge and Grace are perfect examples of people that ought to be laughed out of every newsroom in the country, but that still wield major power in that arena.
-

You're probably right about that.
Though I think the biggest result was that they went for Murder 1.I'm sure that normally they would have gone Murder 2 or Voluntary Manslaughter which would have been more likely to get a conviction. Truthfully, I entirely believe that the latter would have gotten the conviction.
