This chapter was sooo good it made ME write something in this thread. That's something !
All hail Oda!!
awesome! now to download it and giggle like a schoolgirl.
Something I've wanted to know for the last two days; what is Smoker's new rank?! Someone tell me right NOW!
I honestly wouldn't mind if we saw other Rokushiki users, but instead I think we may see high level Marines who, in addition of their df powers will use some of CP9 skills, like one could master Rankyaku, another Shigan or Geppou etc. That way it'd keep CP9's uniqueness as the only ones able to master the 6 forms at once, but would also mean these skills are teached to the Marines too, which would make sense, why not give the most weapons possible to those who have to fight for Justice? Not everyone can have devil fruits.
I'd prefer that over even Rokushiki being limited to CP9, but as of right now there's no guarantee.
so this is what I'm predicting, after the red line, where Marjolie is located, you enter the second half of the grandline, which is a danger zone, of low economic wealth, poor living conditions, and all around a bad place to live. The four emperors live like kings here, and get this, they are the only four pirate crews in the scond half of the grand line. Its basically a pirate zone there. Thats my theory. P.S. doen't smoker look like Icebarg on the cover page?
i'm not sure the brother from anotha motha theory is that sound. Garp seemed to state they were brothers and he trained them together right? i think being pure blood brothers will sustain a larger rivalry. I love how hellmempo still acts snotty xD
good to see you on the board Iwin Ulose, i'm fire, walk with me. xD
LOL, hey man.
well, has Garp said that he trained Ace as well?? i didn't see it if he did say that. o_O….
Great chapter. I love the updated designs for Coby and Helmeppo, and Dragon looks absolutely badass. I also thought it was neat how Coby already has a scar on his forehead. He must of fought some tough battles already, that or it was from one of Garp's insane training methods.
yeah, it was probably Garp…. that wouldnt surprise me in the least. XD
1. Tashigi looks too much like Robin.
2. Coby/Garp(?) can use Soru, one of the "secret" Rokushiki techniques.
1. I actually like this, because it makes her look less like Vivi/Nami. Plus it shows that she's matured… or something.
2. I'm pretty sure that Rokushiki was never described as "secret," and just because a group of assassins uses it does not make it necessarily so.
I'm not sure why some people think that Dragon being Luffy's dad is SUPER OBVIOUS. I didn't really see it coming, and most of the people here are genuinely surprised. I think the whole thing's awesome.
i did notice in some translation i thought garp said i trained you and your brother so you could become strong marines. he didn't specificly say ace though.
and does anyone else notice that after luffy and garp fall asleep garp seems to make a shocking look at robin? i guess it could just be my poor reading of the cells.
Also, I'm suspicious to how Mihawk measure's up to these emperors–his relation with Shanks gives me the impression that he's in their league, despite all signs pointing to the shichibukai (as a whole) being weaker.
I thought the 3 powers were in balance, the WG, Shichibukai, and the now known Emperors. unless you were hypothesizing specifically on the individuals themself… maybe Mihawk is the strongest Shichibukai, if we actually go by shonen paradigm, he's the 1st introduced and is titled "The Strongest Swordsman". I'd actually be comfortable with Mihawk being the strongest Shichibukai and being equal to Shanks in one-on-one power.
I've always suspected that the 2nd half of the GL was the rest grounds for the great pirates, and i've also suspected that the great pirates were the last of the 3 powers of the GL. I'm now interested in these 2 other great pirates, i'm betting on the SHP encountering one of these two guys in the next major arc. We've had Luffy confront a Shichibukai, a "God", and a section of the WG, now it's time for a pirate vs pirate battle.
OMG… Haha.... Zoro beat up the 2 street punks that people thought shot Iceburg. That's awesome!!! And here I thought we were never going to see them in the actual manga.

well i'm thinkin' that Luffy is gonna be confronting the WG a whole lot more in the future…. he burned their flag. he has openly declared himself an opponent of the World Government. like father, like son, apparently. XD Dragon, being a revolutionist, would be very proud. ^_^
but yeah i would love to see some pirate vs pirate, too. however, i am still anticipating confrontation against Doflamingo and Kuma... especially Doflamingo.
@Cap'n:
I'm not sure why some people think that Dragon being Luffy's dad is SUPER OBVIOUS. I didn't really see it coming, and most of the people here are genuinely surprised. I think the whole thing's awesome.
The fact Luffy doesn't see him when Dragon saves his ass and Dragon saying "so he became a pirate?" in Loguetown weren''t big enough clues? He doesn't see him -> they know eachothers -> they know eachothers -> they're related. Dragon seems too old to be Luffy's brother, we know since last week he's not his grand father, and here you go.
It's not super obvious, but compared to last week, that's nothing to write home about.

I don't agree. I believe, given the chance and circumstances, I'd pen a letter to my brother back home about this chapter.
The fact Luffy doesn't see him when Dragon saves his ass
I don't see how that means anything.
And really, you can know someone without being related to them.

you got a slight point there. well… i don't think Dragon being his father was exactly predictable, but... i agree that it's not as big a surprise as Garp being his grandfather. THAT just came right out of the blue, no hints or anything.
And really, you can know someone without being related to them.
Yeah, but the first thing that comes to mind, with the age difference and all, is "it's his fatha".
I've just put up my translation over on the Translation Forum – I'm confident in almost all of it, though I'll admit it remains ambiguous as to whether Luffy was sent to train with Ace, or both Luffy and Ace were sent off to train. Other than that, I think I got everything.
Nevermind. Already been posted.
aah, ty Penguin
Man! This chapter!
So much to say I don't even know where to begin.
But I gotta say, I just love how Oda draws Dragon now…he looks more badass than ever.
And heh, the military really does transform bitches into real men!
Thanks Penguin.
"Luffy: Really? But I was surprised – you've grown so much really fast!"
I think that'll end all that timeline talk.
Perhaps Aldrich's read the book on "How to make manga" too much… maybe that's why it was so obvious to him. I had no clue...
battle franky, your inbox is full.
PS. can you add my HQ in the first post , if its not a bother.
so I can stop refreshing the front page….
thanks
I remember back in the spoiler thread people were worried Oda was drawing One Piece to a close by wrapping up so much…
But with the Four Emperors now, it looks like there's still a lot more for the Straw Hats to conquer.
That makes me happy.
Oh, sorry hyakamaru! I've added it to the first post & cleared out my inbox.
Yes, another groundbreaking chapter. Good stuff.
Now, the four emperors, I'm bothered by that "fouth" one on the bottom on the third "unseen" emperor. He looks like "The Penguin." Also, I wonder how they all measure up to each other? From experience I'd imagine that Shanks and Whitebeard are the tops, but who knows….
As for their crews, I think they may have something to do with their status. Of course each of them is strong, probably the strongest in One Piece, but could one "live like an emperor" alone? With his crew, Shanks would probably be just like Mihawk--but with more beer and less arms to drink it with. Also, I'm suspicious to how Mihawk measure's up to these emperors--his relation with Shanks gives me the impression that he's in their league, despite all signs pointing to the shichibukai (as a whole) being weaker.
Of course, we'll know when we "get there." And how does Dragon fit into this heriarchy of the strongest of the Grandline?
Great chapter. I look forward to the future.
I agree with everything you said. I'm thinking that MiHawk is probably the strongest of the Shichibukai (which would make sense, since this is Zoro's last target) and with a crew, he would be as strong as the four emperors.
What I am having trouble speculating is who they face next? I would think either one of the Admirals or Shichibukai. Some clues point to Merman Island. I hate how Oda makes us wait
Isn't it odd that Zoro showed no shocking reaction after Garp telling them that Dragon is Luffy's father?
Isn't it odd that Zoro showed no shocking reaction after Garp telling them that Dragon is Luffy's father?
not really. that's Zoro's character. he is not the kind to show surprise often. =/
Isn't it odd that Zoro showed no shocking reaction after Garp telling them that Dragon is Luffy's father?
! Zoro is Enels son and inherited the Mantra. He already knew.
! That was a joke, of course. Or was it?
Garp said his son (Dragon) told him he met Luffy in Roguetown. Hmm…That means that he and Dragon met up some where in between. That may also shed light on Garp; given the opportunity to take down (presumably) the most wanted man in the world and chosing not to means he probably has very little taste for "absolute justice". Maybe that's why he isn't Admiral.
It's obvious that Luffy had no idea Dragon was his father. He didn't even know he had a father according to the chapter. Therefore your first deduction "He doesn't see him -> they know eachothers" can't hold.
Some people have asked about the title "Jack-in-the-Box". The literal translation is actually "Surprise Box". I think this is what the Japanese call a Jack-in-the-box.
–------
I was surprised by Tashigi's appearance at first, but it makes sense. It looks like she's grown up since we last saw her because of what she's been through and maybe because of the same passage of time that allowed Coby & Helmeppo to grow so much. However, I do think she looks a little too much like Robin except for the nose.
Hah. Nami got her trademark Luffy! scream in afterall. And the reactions from everyone when Garp and Luffy fell asleep was great. If I can think of any half baked thing to speculate on I'll post that later. But regardless of all that, thanks B-F, Penguin, and everyone hosting the RAWs.
Oda is stalling a lot with the Enel ministory, what's he planning exactly?
AWESOME CHAPTER BTW
Ah ha ha, Coby~ I think he's my new favorite marine.
wo great chapter.
but that means, Luffy have connections with 2 of the emperors. maybe he will be the mediator between Shanks and Whitebeard that will allow them to become allies.
and I think the reason why no emperor has become the pirate king yet is because if he try, the 3 others will go after him (with the shishibukay and the marine on top of that). it's a blocked situation where no one can move.
Is Tashigi still a Sergeant? Or is she a Master Sergeant like Coby now?
They really moved up fast…
Nice to see that Garp is sticking around for another chapter.... what will he reveal next time?
…the cover really shows how Oda's style has changed.
Look at Smoker, Fullbody, and Tashigi. Tashgi especially. She looks like Robin.
Not necessarily, if Smoker spoke with Garp, then Garp would know about Loguetown.
Yes, Michael and Hoichael make their long-awaited appearance!
Oh, yeah, Dragon. He's kinda cool too, I guess…
First off, I'd say that this chapter owned last week's by a whole lot – and that's saying something b/c last week's was one of the best OP chapters that I've read. Thanks for bringing it to us, the fans.
Second, Coby and Helmeppo getting their asses kicked into badassery by Garp was genius. Kudos to Oda for bringing back and transforming those 2.
I mean Coby with the Soru technique... that's unbelievable.
1. It diminishes the significance of Luffy stealing the Soru technique from the CP9; if someone like Coby could master it, it wasn't that difficult a technique and Blueno was overreacting when he saw Luffy use it.
2. It implies the Rokushiki won't die with this arc.
3. Finally, it is indicative of the spread of Rokushiki knowledge; it is now apparent that CP9 is not the only organization that has undergone the Rokushiki "training", so the uniqueness of their fighting style has been lessened.
Based on the dedication and willpower that I saw of Coby in the mini-story, I have no doubt that he's able to use Soru. Notice that I said "use," not "master," because it's clear that Coby could not have mastered such a technique in so short a time. Though he is able to use it somewhat in battle and looks as if he's getting there. I also don't think that the Rokushiki knowledge is that public within the WG. I think that Garp is one of the only people outside of CP9 who knows it and he taught it to Coby. Considering Garp's level in the WG and how long he's been around, I'm certain that he had knowledge of CP9 and their fighting techniques previously.
Dammit, why'd I have to go and read this chapter now. now I have to wait a week for the next one.
Fullbody looks funny, Tashigi looks more mature, and…Smoker looks retarded.
To me it sounds like Ace and Luffy are more like raised as brothers.
Garp left Luffy with his friend to train with Ace. It sounds like this friend was Ace's father or mother. Who may also happen to be a D. Then Luffy and Ace as young children trained together and got strong, growing up as brothers.
So brothers in the terms of they are very close and are practically brothers. But not by blood?
and I think the reason why no emperor has become the pirate king yet is because if he try, the 3 others will go after him (with the shishibukay and the marine on top of that). it's a blocked situation where no one can move.
That actually make sense!
And this is why five old geezers was so worried if Shanks and Whitebeard would unite their powers…
Good job!
Ok, what did we learn today?
1. The title isn't lying. I did 5 spit-takes during this chapter.
2. Monkey D. Garp
3. Monkey D. fuckin' DRAGON
4. The Return of Koby and Helmeppo. I thought I'd never say this, but Helmeppo looks badass.
The most suprising thing this chapter:
5. Koby knows soru.
Safe to say this is why I love One Piece.
Not necessarily, if Smoker spoke with Garp, then Garp would know about Loguetown.
Sure, if you ignore the words "told him" after "his son", then ya… you'd be right.
Has anyone notice that Usopp is watching the whole thing? Ever wonder what he was doing there?
Not necessarily, if Smoker spoke with Garp, then Garp would know about Loguetown.
But Garp specifically said that he MET with Luffy's father (Dragon). Meaning they did talk, and Garp didn't just get info on his presence secondhand via Smoker.
Oh yeah, forgot.
Dragon's approximately forty years old, since 13~30 + 17 = 20~47. Roughly ten years older than Shanks.
Methinks Garp is around sixty.
