I think I'm going to pick up some more manga tomorrow. English-translated, of course.

I'm probably going to get a volume of Keroro Gunso (Sgt. Frog), but knowing there's usually a three-for-two offer where I shop, I thought I'd pick up the first volumes of a couple of new series, since I'm at current with my favourites. I prefer to read from the beginning, but I get the impression a lot of series take quite a bit of time to catch.

      What I've liked:
OP, ES21. Bo-bobo in small doses (one chapter every six months  )

What I sorta liked: Bleach, Death Note (won't bother buying it cos I got spoiled to death). Ruroni Kenshin might be good except I can't stop reading the main character's name as Hiruma (damn ES21) and the art style makes male characters seem damn effeminate.

What I didn't like: Hellsing. Great art, but the writing was hit-and-miss and the characters seemed a bit exaggerated. Yu Yu Hakusho didn't impress me in the least with its style and excessive violence, though Pu may be cuter than Chopper. Naruto is too angsty.

What I absolutely didn't like: Lupin III (too crude, too filthy)

I prefer character development over non-stop fighting.

Worst case, I can always get OP 11 and see what all the Viz-bashing's about.

"I prefer character development over non-stop fighting" is too ambiguous. I could immediately propose any shoujo manga on the basis of that statement alone.

        Define,

        1. Do you like sexual humour?
        2. Do you like cursing?
        3. What are your views on nudity (nipples/no nipples)?
        4. What are your views on violence?
        5. What are your views on gross images?

From what you've offered, you're a straight shounen man and should dig into other shounen titles; HnK, HxH, SD, and PoT. owever, I need more information to make a more accurate diagnosis.

amen ooshi. There is alot of violence in the manga but it is balanced with the superb character development and artwork.

Well, I thought the air frequently goes out of OP the moment it moves into the end-of-arc fight cycle. Fights can only continue to wow with a non-stop stream of new movements, which stretches plausibility after a while. I mean, is Luffy now researching Gear 15 and 16?

              1. If lit's funny and not overused. BOOBS does not substitute for being geunuinely witty. Often, it's funnier trying to work around sex… see the Permian-era British sitcom 'Are you Being Served?'
              2. I curse like Yoichi Hiruma with a stubbed toe, so yes.
              3. Nipples don't bother me, but I'm mildly disturbed by beach-ball breasts. I had a look at an OP dojinshi and was really put off by the beach balls (and the fact the artist couldn't draw Arlong to save her life)
              4. In context. Nonsensical violence leaves me empty.
              5. Ditto.

              SD?

To be honest, I've never read a Shoujo title. I'm still hesitant to buy my precious OP and ES21 tankos, you think I'm going to want to explain to the till jockey why I'm taking home a copy of Shojo Beat?

SD=slam dunk. Definitely check it out. It is heads and shoulders above all other sports manga. (other than hajime no ippo, of course) However, since you want to buy the manga, Raijin comics went bust ages ago along with their license of slam dunk and the interest in future licensing apparently

                  After reading your responses, try:

                  1. Ichigo 100%.
                  2. School Rumble.
                  3. Great Teacher Onizuka.
                  4. Chobits.
                  5. Hajime no Ippo.
                  6. Fullmetal Alchemist.

How do you mean "beach balls"? Enormously exaggerated breasts or nipple-less breasts?

                  @Bounty1Berry:

                  SD?

Avoid Shojou Beat, as it's full of female-fanservice stuff. For a good, solid story, read Fushigi Yuugi, Hana Kimi, Hana Yori Dango or Ouran High Host Club. Hana Dan (HYD) is the grandmother of all shoujo, with all modern titles deriving from it (and Sailor Moon); Hana Kimi is virtually a less comedic, more serious version of Ouran. Fushigi Yugi is just awesome, as it's got shounen-esque fights juxtaposed with a shoujo plotline.

Shoujo titles tend to have much better stories and character development than shounen shows. If you're looking for a good read, pick up a shoujo or a Kondasha manga volume (for Kondasha's stuff caters to older readers).

For the seinen stuff, I already recommended Chobits; Berserk is good, Gantz is a coin flip. For a final note, avoid Fruits Basket AT ALL COSTS.

I meant enormously exaggerated…. though frankly, I suspect some dojin beach ball breasts have tennis ball nipples. XD

Isn't Hajime no Ippo like 90 volumes and no resolution in sight?

I was going to suggest an all-time classic romance story, Love Hina, but it has the "nipple-less" breast Kondasha censorship (which looks weird) and is literally bursting at the seams with fanservice. It's prolly the best shounen romance ever, though.

I guess so. I've never touched the series, really.

Excel Saga and FLCL if you like absolute insanity. IT makes me feel giddy and makes me start giggling to myself in a corner, with a big grin and an evil look in my eyes as I hold a bowl of cereal and a spoon and-

Just try Excel Saga and/or FLCL if you want a substitution for a drug. Or you could watch Azumanga Daioh's opening. That's pretty damn freaky as well.

Ippo is currently something like 76 volumes. By this point, I think if you're turned off by that length there isn't much hope.

Actually I did get the first volume of Keroro Gunso and ended up liking it after being afraid I might not. I was supprised to find out that prior to Sgt Frog taking off, creator Mine Yoshizaki was previously more noted for his Doujinshi stuff.

And I also don't like the beach ball boobs thing either…

I found the special was 4-for-3, not 3-for-2, and only on Viz releases, so I ended up with volume 1 from:
                              Ouran High Host Club
                              Excel Saga
                              D. Gray-Man (I might turn into Bon Kurei without SOME shonen)
                              Fuushi Yuugi
