Bleach Dub Discussion

I could be wrong here, but doesn't the phrase "Soul Reaper" actually appear in the original manga as well? I know they original Japanese text uses "Shinigami" but I also am pretty sure Kubo used "Soul reaper" in English at one point or another (chapter titles, writing in English, something like that) It's also what the US manga uses, so maybe it's just a consistency matter (since both are Viz).
Soul Reaper only appears in the ViZ translation.
-
Tons of people bitch about the dub using the term "soul reaper" but from what I hear thats the title Kubo Tite himself intended.
Then they all stfu. XD
-
OK, having only read all that I have online due to various sources and being a Bleach novice, I really didn't know what to expect with last night's ep. Basically…outside a few good scenes (the interaction of Ichigo and the girl ghosts, the whole scene with the Kurosaki family where Ichigo and dad fight and the sisters ignore them and the part where Rukia tries to explain Plus/Whole and Hollows), it was typical first episode Shonen stuff. (person has special trait and some other skills and some weird circumstance unlocks them). Generally everyone has good voices and I like the "WTF" thing in the preview where Kon tries to get on the show early..but all in good time. At least next week...well, if I start hearing Finnish music when Orihime finally shows up, I'll laugh my butt off.
-
SHIT… I missed the premier, fuck.
Eh, Kon is supposed to be annoying because he's comic relief =p
-
It was late and I couldn't think of anything creative to say. I just pointed out some edits and inconsistencies. Next week we hear Orihime's voice and I bet you it's gonna suck.
Actually, I heard that Orihime is being voiced by the woman who does Hinata in Naruto, and I liked her dub voice.

It's on C-P's BT site right now. See, you have friends that care :)

Man, Bleach's dub is as close to perfect that you're going to get. The voices (IMO) are perfect and they didn't edit anything as far as I could tell. There's no legitamate reason to complain about this dub and the only reason people complain about it is because it's a dub. This is even better than Naruto's dub IMO. I can't wait to hear the other character's voices.
-
For the record- Futurama is amazing.
Simpsons (The good old episodes) > Futurama=Old Family Guy= South Park > New Family Guy > New Simpsons. For Bleach Dub I enjoyed it. I loved every voice…except Kons. But it was only a few swentences so it may change. Karins is the best. I love Ichigos and Ruikas a lot.
Ive been looking on Bleach forums. Most seem to love it, with theexception of Kons voice. And nearly every one was wanting Ichigo to sound rougher, but they liked him enough.
A select few were picky... Here is a few negative comments.
"Ok I have watched the Bleach premier on Adult Swim. IMO, it sucks, really bad!Rukia’s (Michelle Ruff) voice actor was surprisingly good. Ichigo’s VA leaves much to be desired. Johnny Young Bosch is OK as Ichigo, but that’s it.
He doesn’t seem to have the chip on his shoulder Ichigo has…He took away the attitude; now Ichigo is just a guy who yells a lot
Was it just me or did anyone expect that second Hollow to say…”Fe fi fo fum…I smell the blood of an Englishman”?
I am also wondering why they, made those small changes to the intro. They don’t do the revolving character close-ups, Tatsuki and Inoue spray painting was taken out, and a Rukia dancing on the poles was added (That is actually a part of the third season’s ending), when that was a freeze frame before.
Speaking of editing, the episode was way too short, even though they slowed a lot down (I.e. When Ichigo is in his room, they freeze the close-up on his face and you hear his family talking about him…In the Japanese version…You actually see the conversation. And the part where he is talking about SS and throws the table was slowed a great deal)
Other than that a few small changes was made…They took out one the kicks he delivers to the street punks in the beginning, they also took out when he is walking home and narrating, it is just a still shot of the clinic and then he says my name is Ichigo Kurosaki.
My biggest gripe is …well for one, Rukia kept calling “Kidou” “Aikido” that annoyed the hell out of me. And my favorite part …When Ichigo ran up to the Hollow and says “Yo You want my soul don’t …THEN COME AND FIGHT ME FOR IT” was changed to “Quit attacking others, if me you want. You want my soul then fight me for it one on one”
I don’t expect for JYB to imitate Morita Masakazu, and as an actor he should make the character is own, but he really sucks as ICHIGO.
Btw, this has nothing to do with the fact that I am used to Japanese and I prefer subs. There are a few English (I mean a few) dubs that I actually preferred over the Japanese version or enjoyed just as much.
It’s just that the intensity and the excitement, of the original episode were left on the cutting room floor, and the background music was to goddamn low!
It’s just a Cartoon now and at this rate, the ratings won’t be good at all.
P.S Soul Reaper is what they call the Shinigami in the official licensed Manga in America (Deathgod sounds much cooler) I don’t like it but at least they are not calling Zanpakuto’s, Soul Cutters."
"i Watched the dub epi 1 of bleach in my opinion its shit all voices r all crap beside ichigo's"
"Damn why does our versions have to be so gay. Damn pc shit. "
So for the most part people like it save a few people who despised it because its not in japanese.
-
All the edits the first guy is talking talking about weren't in the the show :ermm: .
-
It's on C-P's BT site right now. See, you have friends that care :)
XD thanks, man.
Who's C-P though?
-
I honestly don't see why anyone's complaining about Ichigo's voice. I think JYB did a damn good job of it.
-
C-P is also known as #cartoon_palace, they're a cartoon and anime capping group. They specialize in English eps of popular anime.
-
I did too. They just wanted him to be a tad rougher.
Oh voice lists-
Ichigo Kurosaki - Johnny Yong Bosch
Rukia Kuchiki - Michelle Ruff
Uryū Ishida - Derek Stephen Prince
Orihime Inoue - Stephanie Sheh
Karin Kurosaki - Kate Higgins
Yuzu Kurosaki - Michelle Ruff
Isshin Kurosaki - Patrick Seitz
Tatsuki Arisawa - Wendee Lee
Keigo Asano - Yuri Lowenthal
Kon - Michael Lindsay
Wikipedia I love you. -
I don’t expect for JYB to imitate Morita Masakazu, and as an actor he should make the character is own, but he really sucks as ICHIGO.
Doesn't look like they want him just a tad rougher.
-
Touche. Still it was an excellent dub. People should not complain. I can kinda see Naruto due to not liking some voices (I noticed Naruto's voice is complained a lot, almost as much as Sanjis)
Edit-
http://www.youtube.com/comment_servlet?all_comments&v=Sz4sUw_gwRk&fromurl=/watch%3Fv%3DSz4sUw_gwRkYoutube comments. Though one commented how good the dub was, but said it could have turned into crappy dubs like One Piece…and BOBOBOBO?!
-
@The:
I enjoyed it.
Kon is annoying. I can deal with that.
And those of you who are bashing Futurama obviously don't know what a quality show is.
I said the show is getting old, its that such a horrible insult? I watched all the episodes like 3 times, and its time for something new. Seriouly if you take this too seriusly, then how in the hell can you survive in the internet, when somebody really insults you? You all die form a heart atack.
-
I watched it. Ichigo could be a little more gruffer but he was still good. The voice I really didn't like (not that I hated it) was yuzu's. She sounds to old IMO.
I also forgot how much of a bitch rukia was in the first episode
-
That kind of fits, actually, when you consider that little Yuzu takes the role of substitute mother for the Kurosaki family.
@Advent`:
Soul Reaper only appears in the ViZ translation.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v220/blondeunknown/Bleach-01-01-14.pngI know it never appeared "in-text" like in the pic there. I was thinking the original version had the phrase "Soul Reaper" appear something like as graffitti in a chapter cover or in a chapter title somewhere. I'm almost sure I saw it somewhere when I read Bleach scans. Though I admit that was a pretty good while ago.
EDIT: It's much the same as how we see the word "Marine" in English in One Piece, yet the text itself calls the group "Kaigun/Navy."
-
still though when an 11 year old has that type of voice….I just think its a little too low
-
Neji sounded like a 40 year old in the japanese Naruto >_>
-
Aye that's true which it really didn't fit him.
But that voice was really really cool -
About people wanting Johnny's voice rougher. He stated in an interview that was the original way he did it but the voice director kept telling him to tone it down a bit till he got what we hear now.
-
Also How did they pronounce zanpakuto. It sounded really weird.
You pronounce it [Zan-Pok-uto] right? It just sounded so weird when rukia said it. I don't think they misprounced it but it was hard to make out.
-
"Zan packu toe" is the closest English pronounciation.
-

I enjoyed the dub and thought that Johnny Young Bosh did a excellent job as a voice actor for Ichigo. For the second showing of the episode later that night, I had the Japanese original on my laptop just to match up the scripts and etc. Johnny does a great pull off of Ichigo's emotions.
It's like Trinity Blood's dub, people are saying that Father Nightroad's dub voice is too soft. People have to remember that Japanese to English voices really don't translate that well. Well this is my opinion anyways.

Did you watch it on YTV? I saw it on [adult swim] and there were none of these edits, except Rukia on the poles has always been part of the first intro.

So after reading the replies….Why the hell do Naruto and (some)Bleach people whine about the dub?

Because they're ungrateful -.-

Because they're ungrateful -.-
Well think aboot it. If us One Piece fans had the dub quality that Naruto, Bleach, and Trinity Blood had, we would complain as well. The reason you ask is simple, because the dub is still not up to our belief of what the dub should be.
Plain to point, the fans are pissed because they believe that the dubbed Insert anime series here should be like this to them, and the result that they see isn't what they wanted.
Which actually is sad because unlike One Piece, these anime series that the fans are bitching aboot actually have decent dubs or dubs that are similar to the original series. So people can watch either version, original or dub, and still have the same storyline and etc. Unlike One Piece, which has been plotholed (term my brother and I use to signifiy an overall major oops in anything) to hell and back.
-

No. I too saw it on Adult swim, I quoted some ungrateful people who said that.

Predictions for episode 2:
- Orihime's voice is going to suck. Horribly.
- Kurosaki will still be pronounced in a pseudo-Japanese manner.
- Chad's voice is going to suck. Horribly.
- Some stuff will be edited out during some of the fights.
- Orihime's brother's voice is going to suck. Horribly.
- My mom will be asleep so that I can record the episode.
- My commentary is going to suck. Horribly.
-
Just saw the dub and it was great.
Ichigo's voice is good especially when he said:
"Fight me one on one you ugly Bastard!!!" LOL -

What….the....fuck...are they talking about!?
The whole episode was shown in its entirety!!!
These dumbasses are just spewing crap outta thier mouths.

I think one thing we have to realize is this: people are going to complain no matter what. If a dub is bad, then people will obviously complain. If it is good, then there will still be complainers because they will end up nitpicking or finding the tiniest little mistake and turning it into something horrible. Personally, as bad as some dubs get, many of them do at least get to the heart of the matter and that's sometimes what matters…that and we're getting this on TV (relatively free since we probably still have to pay for cable services), so its not like we have to shell out for DVDs unless we really want to.

and the dub will probably do everything opposite of what you just said. XD
-
I finally have enough money for a video capturing device. The problem is that I might not get it by Friday so stay tuned.
-
stupid dub-haters have NOTHING to complain about. at least they kept the original opening and ending! Its about time they do things like this… if only OP didn't have to be cursed to have that...god awful music amongst other things that have been discussed to death.
btw who is it that does Ichigo's voice? someone mentioned the green ranger... is that really him?
-

This is why [as] > YTV.
Really, the only thing people can complain about with this dub so far is the translation and Kon's voice.
-
What's wrong with the translation again?
-
@yokaiforte:
What's wrong with the translation again?
Far to many unneeded changed sentances or phrases. Hell, some of the sentances are completely diffrent from the orginal.
-
Hey, since I don't have a fansub of said anime, can you give me some examples?
Be glad that they didn't rewrite a lot of the script in intense situations to include bad potty jokes about desert toilets anyway.

Well for one, when Karin is being held by the Hollow she tells Ichigo to run away in the sub, in the dub she tells him to save her. Or Ichigo saying telling Rukia that if she's trying to be a burgler she's not being a very good one while in the sub he says "You scared the hell out of me and now you're ignoring me?!, and let's not forget "Plus" changed to "Wholes".
-
They edit it more for YTV? Why? Anyway, I wish that all dubbed anime kept the original openings and endings. Also, I hope they keep Bleach's second opening, as it's one of my favorite anime openings.
-
@pirateneko:

Johnny Yong Bosch, AKA the guy who originally replaced Zack as the Black Ranger in season 2, then became the Green one by Zeo. (OK, I admit to watching MMPR back in the day…but after Zeo, the only season I watched fully was Time Force, that's it!)
-

I was wondering about that thing with Yuzu and Karin. I wasn't sure if it was a sub/dub change or a manga/anime change. The ignore/burglar thing isn't a big deal. Either line works for the situation. Plus to Whole is probably the one I can most understand getting fired up over. As it is a seemingly unnecessary change. I can see only two reasons for the switch, (1) consistency with the Viz manga (which also uses Whole) (2) "Whole" provides a better connection to "Hollow" than "Plus" does.
-

I think Bleach does.

Really, the only thing people can complain about with this dub so far is the translation and Kon's voice.
YTV doesn't do a lot of cutting for TV - Bleach airs 10:30, which is 1 1/2 hours after the watershed period begins. In America, watershed starts at 10, and Bleach airs 2 1/2 hours after that starts. So really, your point is unsupported. Have a nice day!
Also, I took a look over the AS one and it's pretty much the same thing as the YTV version, so that should clear up a few myths.
-

ooh THAT green ranger (i stopped watching right before Zio >_>) I was thinking of Tommy…. but anyway, yeah Bosch was pretty cool, and he does a good job as Ichigo.
