Anyone else read this manga? I just picked up the first volume today and it looks like a very promising title.

don't know what this is. care to share a summary or something?

I watched the anime. It started promising, and it ended up being one of the worst animes I ever watched. Just completely depressing, and the characters get annoying quick because they never make real changes.

Summary:
Shuji and Chise are two Hokkaido high school students barely starting a relationship with each other. Then, with no warning, a squadron of bombers from an unknown country destroy the city of Sapporo. All hope is lost when suddenly, the bombers are destroyed by a small red light floating across the sky. At this point, Shuji finds out that the one responsible for eliminating the enemy forces is Chise, who reveals herself as a cyborg engineered for mass-destruction.
And if it's depressing, good. I really don't like happy-go-lucky shiny pretty ones, I like dirtier or grittier ones that capture the human condition.

Ah, Saikano. Better correct that letter in the topic title.
I haven't read/seen it yet, but I plan to acquire the anime one of these days. I've heard great things about it.

! Why they ever thought making a high school girl into the ultimate weapon of destruction is totally beyond me. Meaning, that it was a BAD IDEA. You really shouldn't make ridiculously destructive weapons sentient PERIOD.
I never finished the anime, just simply stopped at would be considered "the happy ending" before things get even worse. If you're a fan of depressing series, this is it.
Watched it in a block with Kimi Ga Nozomu Eien and Kannazuki no Miko at my anime club. This is the madness I have to deal with. Madness that suggests showing Grave of the Fireflies and End of Evangelion back-to-back.

I didn't like it when I first read it in English (and stopped after 1 vol or so), but when I got the chance to read it in Japanese, I actually like it.

I watched the anime, and it WAS pretty depressing. This is basically one of those series where you watch and go "Okay, so which character is going to die this episode?" And the ending wasn't very good, IMO.
Awesome music though.

How good is the cartoon compared to the comic? The author, who's name escaped me, has wonderful and very powerful style of telling stories and I can't imagine how well it translates into animation. I usually don't care for adaptations but I might have to give this one a chance…

the original title is saishu heiki kanojyo. i have it in japanese manga form. it's an apocaliptic manga that's ok. if it was longer than it is 7 books, i might not have bought all of them…
