I'll try to make this short, so I don't wind up dissing Naruto….
Most American fans prefer nonstop action over an anime that has more of a complex story.

When I started reading both in Shonen Jump I knew I enjoyed One Piece the most. Currently though I've completely stopped reading Naruto since volume 7 came out which was back in August. I was also a big fan of Dragon Ball a good number of years before I even knew Naruto or One Piece existed.
Sagat (the Pirate) with the eye patch laughing after winning
he picks Ryu (ninja) crying as he falls
Huh?
Anyway, I have always liked ninjas. Pirates never appealed to me.
But that doesn't mean I like Naruto better than One Piece. So I'm going to say the "pirate versus ninja" thing has nothing do with any of it.
I don't like the whole "pirate versus ninja" thing anyway. I never saw how they were similar in the first place.
but popular =/= good
Took what was I gonna say, but tis true.
And shallow teenage angst apparently appeals to every teenager on earth if curent music trends are any indication. Though years ago Eva gained popularity….and we all know its not because its actually a deep show (haha) but because...........angst is the new fast food.
You just stated the reason I don't watch more anime.
I keep trying to find something as good and, shall I say, as "happy" as One Piece. I've yet to find another one that matches my criteria.
Also, I can't stand things that are madly popular by the masses. Why? I view the public in general as a bunch of mindless morons who will belive/want anything you tell them to like. I don't want to be a part of that. I'll go for the wierd little market niche's, thank you.
While I'm often like that as well, it doesn't mean that something that is popular can't be good.
Example, the songs "In the End" and "Sugar We're Going Down." Insanely overused and popular songs, and yet I still like them. Why? Because they're unique and good.
If One Piece ended up becoming insanely popular (the true version, of course), I would be jumping for joy that these people finally see something good. =p
One Piece EASILY trumps Naruto in popularity in Japan. When I was staying with a host family I saw one of those late-night game shows where they used several clips of One Piece in one of their games. I also saw a One Piece clip used in a show comparing different Japanese dialects (also used were Heidi and Dr. Slump). I never saw Naruto being used in a game show.
Nearly all the points I would make about this have been brought up already (I give major props to stephen), but there is something I've mused about:
To me it seems that Naruto focuses more on the individual, whilst One Piece focuses more on the group. Think about how important nakama is to the central plot of One Piece. In Naruto I rarely heard the word nakama used, even the Teamwork thing seemed to disappear into the background once the tournament started. The tournament lent itself greatly to focusing on each individual character. In the Chuunin Exam ninjas weren't always fighting for their group, they were fighting to prove themselves. In One Piece while there are always individual fights there's always the presence of nakam in the background. I think perhaps that it's this Individual vs. Group dynamic that makes Naruto more appealing to Americans.
I just read some of the posts about Naruto being better dubbed than One Piece. I kinda agree but the Naruto dub is by far more disgusting in the PS2 game Narutimate Hero. Mostly because of Naruto's catch phrase: BELIEVE IT!"uhh…How can I lose..Believe It..." I swear to god, I heard that phrase more than 20 times playing through as Naruto in Story mode; and there's only six battles. The thing is, in the game, Naruto says his thing at the wrong time also. Jesus Christ, It's like a ninja wannabe retard with blonde hair and an orange jacket saying it. The best dub I have ever witnessed was either Full Metal Alchemist or Dragon Ball.
Meh, in my opinion, if people read the Dragonball manga and then went to One Piece, the transition would be lot smoother than from Dragonball -> Naruto. One Piece has a lot more in common/taken from Dragonball, especially the early bits.
Toriyama is like Oda's god. I wouldnt be surprised. The manga definitely has a pre-saiyan saga feel and that is always good.
Well, Toriyama is pretty much the god/idol of nearly every mangaka of this generation. But he's definitely had a huge impact on Oda's style.
True, but also:
http://img108.imageshack.us/img108/6307/ripoff10cp.pngActually I was drawing Rock Lee at work the other day and an 'anime enthusiast' came up to me and asked if I liked anime. He had no idea who Lee was, but he liked One Piece alot.
ok people thats the reason why naruto its more popular.
I don't like the whole "pirate versus ninja" thing anyway. I never saw how they were similar in the first place.
Pirates are SO way better.
I think perhaps that it's this Individual vs. Group dynamic that makes Naruto more appealing to Americans.
That's an interesting point….there could be something to that, since Americans are more concerned with individualism. You would know better than me, but I've read in the past that Japanese tend to focus more on the group than the individual.
Edit: Haha, that picture. XD

o_O; um.. haha , quite disturbing.
Why is Naruto better than One Piece?
Hell no , its not better , no no noooooooo!!
I 'was' a Naruto fan <_<; well not really a fan..but I just liked Kakashi , Lee and Gai ONLY.
But I never liked the story =X
my fav ninja anime would be 'Ninja boy' or Kabamaru , its so damn old XD but still cute.
ONEPIECE FTW!!!!

true.
at the same time, I hate when anime becomes popular in america. It's harder to find an original jap version after it gains english popularity, and you have to deal with people like "narutards" or inuyasha fan girls. not always, but it's a rule of thumb.
Taboo…that picture scares me :P
That picture is hideous. Sometimes I think that cosplay should be banned…
Pirates are SO way better.

Um…yeah, but what does that have to do with my quote about not liking the "pirates versus ninjas" thing? (Edit: Oh, I guess the "stop the hatred" sign?)
But since I like ninjas better (and always have...blame the Ninja Turtles) that doesn't mean I have to like Naruto better than One Piece. But most of the time when I say I like ninjas better, people respond with "Naruto lame!!!! One Piece better!!!"
Whatever, as far as western stuff, I always preferred cowboys over pirates anyway. Or at least the Clint Eastwood kind (silent type).
The common stereotype of pirates as rowdy, unwashed, drunken thugs never appealed to me. Just not my thing I guess. However, the common stereotypes of ninjas and cowboys did.
(And I'm NOT talking about what pirates, ninjas, and cowboys were like in reality. I'm talking about the general portrayal of them in movies, television, etc. So please, nobody start telling me stuff like "pirates were actually quite well-mannered gentlemen" because you read it in a book or whatever)
I'll go out of my way to say that hampr's post was easily one of the most bizarre string of words ever put together by anyone to ever use the internet. Kudos, I guess.
So please, nobody start telling me stuff like "pirates were actually quite well-mannered gentlemen" because you read it in a book or whatever)
Haha, awesome.
Well, going by real life: pirates <<<<<<<< ninjas > vikings
And with the topic in mind: there's just some thing where each side of the Pacific has an infatuation with the other side's….. action-people.
Nobody will ever win the pirates VS ninjas debate. It is impossible. Even if you use factual evidence for either side, nobody will ever win. The closest I ever got to an agreement on the matter was by making everyone realize that robots and zombies could whoop all their asses.
yeah that pic..could be better..if the ppl did the cosplay better..but..no it's just crap….well kakashi-sanji is okay..but...when I got into naruto...it was good at first..then flashbacks.. I wait awhile..Me to a naruto-luvin' friend:anything good with naruto? Him:nope...,Down da road....hmm that episode seem interestin'((I watch it again..basically around the uber naruto and sauske(sp) battle, and the bug hunt one...oh what's this ehh...another flashback..well that all folks....also tried to check out the manga..not impressed...
Well did watch Op anime until....skypeia.....then since I was buyin the bad subs...I stopped...then I came upon a good Op manga site, and from then on...I was a fan of the manga....

Or, better yet, cyborg zombie pirate ninjas! That way, everybody wins!
Well, there are hardly any interesting, verified facts on either side. But from what there is, I would say of all the appeal of pirates lies in Ed Teach and the Strawhats. Go vikings.
And again on the topic, dunno if it was mentioned, but the production values. For some reason the less popular series got such fluid animation and OP spends most of the time looking like ass. Even though the drawing has been much better in the past year or so.

Pirates >>>>>>> Robots and Zombies but <<<<<<<<<< Robot-Zombies

Robots are better than zombies :3

I wanna see that….glares in taboo's direction
go play the 2nd or 3rd Ratchet and CLank then they have Cyborg Zombie Pirate Ninjas
this thread could only be funnier if the reasoning was that the Naruto thread on these forums is the biggest

No the robots lost the battle in Robot-Pirate island. ^ ^
Samurai-ninja-pirate-cowboy-mech-zombies.

Disturbingly awesome. XD

Indeed (though I typically didn't get into much anime till it came here, including One Piece XP ). Just looking at sites like Fanfic.net make me shudder and shake my head in shame.
I've always been torn about whether I want OP to become more popular or not. I think I would like it to become more popular among anime fans so that I would access merchandise easier (it's so retarded where I live, it's so hard to find OP merchandise, but you can definitely get shit loads of Naruto stuff), and also because there would be a bigger demand for uncut and subbed One Piece (or a better dub even).
But then again, I like the OP fandom as it is. Most people are mature and interesting, there's no shipping wars, no weirdos (like this example http://mrs-sephiroth.livejournal.com/profile), and good OP fanfiction outnumbers bad OP fanfiction. I would certainly miss it if it changed.
I pretty much feel the same. If there's anything else I dislike about the fandom, is the people who brush off One Piece without giving it a proper chance. I originally did that, and it was only by forcing myself to read it that I ended up loving it.
Naruto seems to be way more popular than One Piece. Narutofan.com has a thousand times more members than arlongpark which seems to be the hub for all One Piece fans. On every anime forum where there are both One Piece and Naruto sections the Naruto section generates thousands more posts than the One Piece section. Naruto related topics seem to be more popular too. There must be a reason for why Naruto is better than One Piece.
Since when did more = better?
Stephen,
I think there's another reason related to TW. AK hates OP with a passion. He refuses to admit OP has made any progression and refuses to acknowledge any depth to the characters or story. He was a loud [and obnoxious] voice that rose up against OP for whatever reason he may have had and although he says little today (mainly because no one is listening) he was very vocal on his BBS in bashing OP. He even declared the Arabasta segment to be one of the worst and most drawn out arcs in today's manga with a villain that had no motivation.
Ain't jealousy a bitch?
His attitude spread like wildfire to his readers frighteningly parallel to how Dragon Ball GT was first bashed in the US by DB fans like Wuken (kudos to anyone that knows who that was) and absorbed as fact rather than opinion. No one bothered to check the facts nor to actually view the show in either case and simply took the rants of people they respected as bible black truth.
As you mentioned there are several more important cultural factors that play into it, but as I noted several months ago, its funny to peruse the TW BBS and see everyone but squirrelord and AK praising OP and turning on Naruto.
At least half the people on Narutofan. com are one piece fans as well.
I enjoy Naruto more because that was my first love. But One piece is a better manga, but alot of people complain about things in Naruto that also happend in one piece but says its golden in one piece. I dont quite understand that sometimes. Well I understand it, but people have biases.
ninjas > pirates but Oda > kishie.
So therefore, I think Odo with Ninjas would be the best manga ever. lol . just kidding.
Greg,
It's funny you mention that. I wrote a post on that very subject myself, on this forum. Let me dig it up…
AK and Toriyama World are currently ruining Kinnikuman for me so I am not a fan
What's Ak again…..I checked stpehen's post but...
To me, Naruto is an okay series, it's not horrible, but nothing really makes it stand out. The only fight that I actually enjoyed was Naruto vs. Neji. The thing that probably makes it so popular is that there is rarely a lasting problem or derailment from the action. When something bad happens, someone whips out the "Deus ex Machina no justu with little to no explanation", and everything is better again. That way, a coherent plot to explain everything does not get in the way of the fighting. Of course, with all of the Narutards in my schools anime club, my opinions are rarely heard.
Simply put, Naruto is okay, but One Piece is on a different level of awesome.

I guess that's because fanboys all act the same way…just because there isn't a term like "One Piece tards" doesn't change the fact, that many OP fans are just as or even more stupid. You have those guys within EVERY fandom.
...Yeah, that would rock! :ninja:
Just think of what would happen if Oda made a ninja join the strawhats. Then we would have Samurai, Ninja and Cyborgs that claim to be pirates!
In the end though, theres really no debate.
All of us who are up to date to Naruto can tell you it fell off the horse along time ago.
I mean Sai, Sai ALONE invalidates Naruto as a series.
Sai and the mindless amount of attention of Sasuke and his piss poor resolve for revenge and the fact that he hasn't gotten any closer to his goal and taht the villians like taking random 3 month vacations
He's a funny guy.
Haha! That about sums it up. Never bothered arguing his stance because it defeats itself so there isn't much else to do but laugh ^_^;
Overall, I can never see how Naruto would be a better series..
I had to agree that Naruto starts out good.. but then it has been declining since the 2nd part started.. not to mention the fillers for the anime..
in the anime.. Naruto had the plus to the action/battle scene and the music.. but its not really far with OP..
other than that.. OP wins this by lots!!!
Naruto was a very excellent series.. but up to it is now.. its just mediocre… there are many series that I enjoy more than Naruto..
and as to why Naruto is far more popular in here.. (not in Japan.. in Japan OP is the most popular series.... even almost becoming the best-selling manga ever)
4kids (MOSTLY!!!)
the starts (a little slow.. but that's because of introducing 5 main chars)
the style (at first not really appealing.. but its great... and now has improved A LOT!!)
and as many said the accessibility to the series..
Sai and the mindless amount of attention of Sasuke and his piss poor resolve for revenge and the fact that he hasn't gotten any closer to his goal and taht the villians like taking random 3 month vacations
Orochimaru is just Naraku with a smile and Michael Jackson looks.
agreed
and i'd actually like Sasuke if he could be a decent Revenge character just there is one in every anime and the are ALL better than he could ever hope to be
from
Kurapica to Guts to Jean-Pierre Polnareff

Did pirates rape and pillage his hometown when he was a child or something? :wassat:
BTW as for the pirates vs. ninjas debate, samurai pwn them both.
I don't know….after reading 16 volumes of Lone Wolf and Cub....Samurai mostly suck. Except for two or three who kill the rest of the samurai.
Um…yeah, but what does that have to do with my quote about not liking the "pirates versus ninjas" thing?
o_oa
I wanna see that….glares in taboo's direction
I want to see that too. x3
It's a shame there aren't more ninja pirates. Or pirate ninjas. That way everybody would be happy.
Although with this pirate craze that's sweeping America ever since PotC you'd think OP would be more popular.
It's a shame there aren't more ninja pirates. Or pirate ninjas. That way everybody would be happy.
Judging from that photo, I wouldn't be.
This discussion was going rather smoothly all things considered, but please stop the cosplay photo wankage. From this point on, back to the discussion of Naruto and One Piece. Thank you.
Did pirates rape and pillage his hometown when he was a child or something?
I'm not him so I can't say for sure, but I think he's just sore that OP continually beats the pants off Naruto in the country where it really matters so it doesn't entitle him to bragging rights.
Either that or he actually believes what he says O_o
I ask as well, who is this AK person?
Sai and the mindless amount of attention of Sasuke and his piss poor resolve for revenge and the fact that he hasn't gotten any closer to his goal and taht the villians like taking random 3 month vacations
"Oh, don't worry about a thing! Akatsuki won't come after you cuz they've got some wierd crap they're up to that's gonna put 'em off for three years, and coincidentally, Orochimaru can only do his jutsu every three years so there's no need to worry about Sasuke. And by the way, you're coming with me for a training journey that's gonna take… you guessed it! Three years!" o_o
I dont think that there would have been a naruto movie if he had not learned the rasengan.
