the bone marrow is connected to the blood vessels, which are connected to the lungs
Not good enough. I was thinking something along the lines of, "Luffy sucked the air back through his thumb", but that's still not satisfactory enough.

A wizard did it.
From this chapter, we can draw one of two conclusions: a) Oda was planning to make Kokoro a mermaid all along and deliberately wrote in the flooded tunnel so she would be forced to reveal herself, or b) he wrote himself into a corner, then said, "what the hell, if Igaran can come back, Kokoro can turn into a mermaid."
I assumed he just did the same thing as when he did the Storm on Croc, or something. He used that move probably just to save himself from the explosion.
@IT'S:

Death doesn't happen in One Piece, mainly because the grim reaper hates messing with the devil fruit users.
It could have come out of his teeth cringes at the thought
The Bone Balloon is different from the normal balloon move that luffy does is that instead of entering the lungs and causing the rest of the body to expand around a bubble that is held closed with the strength of luffy's lips, it pumps the air from the lungs into the bone and musculature creating the effect of a highly pressurized tire. This results in a probably massively increase hardness of the substance as with several tens of thousand PSI bullets effectively bounce, unable to gain any purchace at all. The key is that the air is contained in the sealed system of the bone marrow and musculature.
However when such a system is emptied through whatever internal control luffy has that allowed him to fill it in the first place (biofeedback/life returns being a good candidate), it exits through the nearest and most convient location, namely mouth or anus. Given that the mass was mostly in the upper chest the mouth was most convienient.
Secondary to the high pressure of the Bone balloon is the fact that for there to be hardness the entire frame of rubber has to contract, as with too much surface area the PSI goes down, like a normal balloon, luffy becomes softer. However the extra tension of hyper contraction combined with the over inflation of the seal compartments creates an incredibly hard object. The effect of this though, means that once the air is expelled the contraction takes over, and without countering air pressure, he shrinks, and the time it takes him to relax again is proportional to how long the state lasted, much like the way your arms spontaneously rise after being released from a cast.
On a side not, with suffcient pressure, and given luffy durabilty and strength, the Gear 3 giant attacks are probably harder than steel.
[ franky: give up the escort ship–--------!! i'll make their escape route!!!]
This phrase sounded strange to me. It seems that Franky is saying that he will not use the escort ship to make the SH`s escape route.
And about the DEX discussion… normaly you say that a writer that goes for DEX has some planning or creativity problems in designing his plots. I hate when I'm reading or watching something and suddenly some stupid answer appears. I think the most terrible moment was the virus solution from Independecy Day. I almost left the building after that.
In a fantasy manga like One Piece, a lot of incredible things can happen to solve the problems. But, as I see, it is not bad design. We had a lot of hints to think that Kokoro could be a sea been. And even other moments that I think people call DEX are totally adequate to the circunstance as a proper DEX!!!
The thunder that saved Luffy it is so DEX so impossible to happen that leaves no doubt to Smoker that Luffy smiled knowing he would die. The most important thing at that point was not Luffy been saved _ this part of the story could be totally erased and would not be missed _ but... the relationship that Smoker created of Luffy to Roger, and the respect from that... THAT is importante, that is BIG. So, even in this moment, when Oda used DEX, it was to acomplish something big... using the characteristcs of DEX. Kudos for Oda.
It seems to me that Oda is very concerned about DEX. And I think that is why we dont see magic in One Piece, as it is easy to fall for easy solutions...

**Heh. I can see it now…..
Nice post, It explained things nicley.**
Biggest plot twist ever if Franky stays on the island to hold Lucchi off while the SHs run off on the ship.
For their escape, I think it will involve Yokuzuna, anyone noticed that he had a little flashback in this chapter?
The escort ship is too obvious, and unless the Buster Call is destroyed or disabled, then the Buster Call will just shoot it down. But Yokuzuna is perfect for the situation. He swims, he's big, and he's resilient.

I think Oda has already written the whole One Piece "book". What remains now if for him to actually draw it.
EDIT
Look @ it this way: he has the whole script and is currently (and still) making the movie, bit by bit.

Remamber, Oda though his story will go on for five years so I don't think Oda has the whole script done because he changes his mind a lot.

So you think that after the Buster Call is destroyed by the Straw Hats, Yokozuna will tow the Puffing Tom back to Water 7 with Luffy, Franky, Galleyla and co on board? Then it would be the party chapter after that.
My predicitions is that Robin will destroy the Buster Call next chapter by pointing the cannons to the floor and firing them. And then Luffy will Beat Lucci the following chapter. Then it's tying up loose ends. This sure has been a long saga.

Maybe he thought he could tell the whole story in just five years but, as the chapters came out, he may have realized that 5 years weren't enough.
Quentin Tarantino, regarding Kill Bill, had planned to make 1 movie only but, because it turned out so big, he opted to make 2 parts of 1 movie instead. The same concept could aply here in the sence that Oda's taking WAY more time to tell the story then he thought he needed and we … say THANK YOU ODA for taking his time, no?

Well he probably knows the barebone outline for what what's going to happen, it's just how much he chooses to embellish. But then again, I'm just assuming.
As of now, I think the escort ship is going to be used.
I did love Franky's speech. I think maybe The Franky Family going one way and Franky going another on Enies Lobby might be a little hint as to his future. I mean, to echo Saul's words, Robin will find her nakama who will protect her, Franky is literally conforming to the protection part. I mean, what with the Christ pose gun guard and blocking Funkfried to make Spancakes. And regarding a possible death, he did 'die' before, maybe "Franky" of W7 will 'die' meaning his origin as Cutty Flam is out thus the anonymity he had as Franky can never be reattained. But yeah, hopefully he'll invest in pants.
By the way, any guesses on how much longer the arcs going to be? I mean, it's presumedly drawing closer to Luffy beating Lucci, which is as of right now seems to the last fight.
Well hopefully it's not too much longer. What do they still have left to do?
1. Defeat Lucci.
2. Defeat Buster Call.
3. SHs meet up at the bridge and take the escort ship.
4. Escape, and make their way back to W7.
5. Pick up their stuff and get a new ship.
6. Have Usopp join back.
7. Have a shipwright join the crew.
8. Get new bounties assigned.
My guess for how many chapters are left would be 10-12, assuming a chapter or so for each, and maybe a little more for some.
For the people who think that Gear 2 will beat Lucci, well, it won't be a gear storm. That'd cheapen the move.
If Luffy uses Gear 2 at this point, I think it will be gear 2 jet cannon. Right now, Lucci might be stunned for long enough (though I'd hope Luffy would do something to stun Lucci longer, like a jet bazooka to the kneecaps. A delayed reaction would be a little weak in this case) for Luffy to prepare the move.
It's a technique developed in this arc, and it seems to be powered from the momentum of Luffy's punches. With Gear 2's speed , imagine how powerful a jet cannon would be! It'd send Lucci flying into who know what, maybe some more BC ships. But not all of them, that'd be too much.
So, it's either that, or the prediction from the last post. Luffy's slaming the gates on Lucci via Gear 3.
About the simplification of the Marines personalitys, I noticed it is happening since the SH stepped Enies Lobby. CP9, for one, is already a assassination squad capable of undergoing an undercover mission for 5 years and still could blodthirstly try to kill someone that they had and actually create a bond with, Iceburg. Although I understand Lucci having that capability (he is a psycho) I do not see Kaku or Calipha in this same boat (if they hated what they were doing, why not let us see that hate more clearly? And why they obey the WG? Out of fear? Respect? Personal belief?). The VAs suffer from the same problem, but I think that we will see more of them before the end, so things will be better. Judge Baskerville was a completely idiotic character in my opinion. If ODA wanted a someone to tell us that the pirates themselves judged the incomers, he could have made those pirates say it. Incredibly enough, the best personality developed in this arc on the villain side was Spandam´s.
But this "problem" shrinks a little if you look at Aokiji. In a sense, he is the biggest incognita so far, and with fewer apearance is already more dimensional than most other "bad" marines. So I think ODA choose to use classical villains in this arc for the sake of making things less complicated for the time being (for him and for us).
well, did anyone else seem to notice that Kokoro and crew appear to be traveling towards the Bridge of Hesitation?
I'd like it best if Luffy does a whole new move (ie-storm, windmill) in his normal state to defeat Lucchi.
well, did anyone else seem to notice that Kokoro and crew appear to be traveling towards the Bridge of Hesitation?
And with Luffy and Lucci fighting in the Bridge's inside part, the crew is almost all together again!
Off-topic: Regarding DEX, I guess I am the only one who didn't think Chopper's monster point was DEX. Since Skypiea, I already have this feeling that taking more than one rumble balls consecutively is bad. Otherwise why did Chopper choose to run away from Ohm instead of at least putting up a fight by taking another rumble ball? The only thing I didn't realise is that the effect would be that terrible. Furthermore the people in Drum seem to have an irrational fear for Chopper.
i guessing lucchi defeat next chapter and the gang reunites

That's a good point. I have often wondered why he couldn't take another rumble ball in his previous fights. He was concerned about how much time he had left, and now we know.

Yeah, same here.
That was awesome. I KNEW he had something planned for her from the minute I saw her bloody ugly face two and a half years ago. Although my line of thought was near a Gyojin, this was SO much better. Now I wanna see the explanation for the legs.

Nah, you're not the only one I'm with ya'.
Chapter was awesome. Thanks battle franky.
Life Return with Lucci was WTH? moment. The mermaid was a OMFG moment.
Franky landing Frunkfried on Spandam: priceless.
Edit: Also off topic but MSN manga said the manga is coming out early this week. Is that true?
Very fun chapter. Maybe it was just me, but Usopp seems pretty used to the concept of death now; he didn’t seem all that panicky in the water! I’m really glad he didn’t face Spandam, he can do better that that, and Franky deserved to take him out.
And… you have to take off all your clothes to become a mermaid, eh? Luckily the shells automatically fall into place.
lol yeah i was surprised by the fact ussop seemed ok when he faced death. Maybe hes gonna be braver after this arc

Has it ever been any different?
He was lying quite helpless on the ground next to Kuro but didn't hesitate to shoot jango to help kaya and the kids escape.Kuro could have killed him in an instant.
To finally beat Mr.4 and Miss merry Christmas he risked to be hit by mr.4's 4 ton baseball bat again, that also could have meant instant death^^
…and so on.
In the end he always does evererything he can and never gives up just like the rest of the crew.
That's true, Usopp faces death when it is need to. You forget to mention how he risked his life to save his nakama from Mr. 3's candle trap while the Mr. 5 pair was attacking him.
Nah, you're not the only one
I'm with ya'.
I'd agree. As logically sound as what the three Rumble Balls did, that was clearly a deus ex machina, but hey, Oda planned it that way; he could have easily allowed Chopper to knock out Kumadori with his Arm-Points, eh? I'm more partial to the Monster transformation.
Well I mean, if it's dex then everyone was dex. Everyone was scheduled for a powerup. Everyone got a powerup of some kind. Oda managed to even work it nicely into his history which makes it even stronger than, ya know, Sanji setting his foot on fire out of the blue. I think a lot of fans had always wondered what would happen with the power of three rumble balls and now we have a potential scenario for some truly wicked beast battles in the future even though it doesn't seem like we'll get something like that this round.
which makes it even stronger than, ya know, Sanji setting his foot on fire out of the blue.
I do not think I was around for when that happened, but I'm not sure why everyone was surprised; Sanji basically did a Concassé into the ground while standing on both feet. Heck, his first kick left a swirly fire trail, which leads me to believe the second one (with the left foot) was actually weaker than the first. Personally, I thought Sanji taking Jyabura's kicks/shigan like they were nothing was a whole deal stranger.
All this rumble ball talk has got me thinking, do rumble balls only work for Zoan users? If not, then couldn't another devil fruit user use them? I know it would be kind of unoriginal for two characters to use the same thing as their secret weapon, but what if an enemy Zoan user got hold of a few and decided to eat a few?

Right. Regardless of how he did it, I'm more interested in the fact that his pants are flame retardent as well as his shoe. It's really cool, but it also boggles the mind. Chopper at least goes with the comic book lore that eating more of stuff that makes you stronger is bad for your health, but makes you a demon.
I really don't see anything more dex about that than any of the other powerups. It's simply a part of the plot. It doesn't stink of being pulled out of left field ya know?
I'm more interested in the fact that his pants are flame retardent as well as his shoe.
OK, you've won me over. o.O
EDIT: Is soap flammable?
Haha, well the physics of it don't REALLY matter. I'll be the first to admit that. Because on the other hand something normally the size of a deer just turned into a furry death machine. But then all the more reason that everyone's upgrades are just as nutty and fun as shounen adventure comic power-ups should be.
Way late to the party, just to say it was a good chapter, with Franky saving Robin again, kicking Spandam's ass as expected and deserved (so much for Funkfreed being a powerful weapon), and most importantly, the Lucci/Luffy fight resuming on the bridge of hesitation and not on another BC ship. That was nice.
Not too fond of the deus ex from Kokoro, but you can't really complain when you see that hilarious final double page.
You know, I don't think this counts as DEX, Oda could have just made it so that the pathway never flooded in the first place. I think Oda wanted to show us that Kokoro was a mermaid in some way, it will probably have some relevance to the future story. Maybe Kokoro will do something underwater, like visit Impel Down
You know, there seems to be a lot of people throwing DEX around lately without taking into account what it really means.
Deus ex machina is a Latin phrase that is used to describe an unexpected, artificial, or improbable character, device, or event introduced suddenly in a work of fiction or drama to resolve a situation or untangle a plot
wiki
Now….if you're a careful reader, we've had hints that Cocoro was not all that she seemed from as far back as October 2004. Not to mention that several of us thought her appearance was fishy from the start. Further consider that in her 'sexy' look she even more resembles the body of a mermaid.
DEX isn't something that the author has planned out ahead of time. It's something that they pull literally out of their ass to save the story. For example: the Potara in DB.
Just because something was unexpected by a few people doesn't automatically make it DEX if it was planned carefully and all the hints are in place.
Greg has it exactly right. An example of DEX would be if Shanks or Whitebeard suddenly showed up at Enies Lobby and took out the Buster Call, as I've seen some people suggest.
The principle that Sanji's Diable Jambe works on is that of the Kinetic Harpoon. A theoretical/not so theoretical weapon that drops dense metal or carbon composite rods from orbit onto a target. There is little or no thrust and the weapon just drops and hits. The ideal substance is a high density carbon composite because it heats up, is enveloped in a plasma sheath as it renters orbit but doesn't break up. The impact then bleeds the massive kinetic energy of the falling massed object and the frictive addition of heat into the target causing a massive explosion.
Sanji has always like Zoro and luffy been a high density human being. The fact that he can take a blow from a man like Mr. 2 who can kick a human being through a wall indicates a durabilty that is far beyond human possibilty. In the manner that a Storm Kick can blow through a concrete wall and not even scratch Luffy tells that whatever other properties that he possesses superhuman density and durability is one of them. Think on Zoro, who got hit head on with an attack that split the pillars of stone behind him, and only inflicted a shallow wound. Sanji is likewise a incredibly dense and durable being, not quite human.
The anime explaination is of course that his 'aura' extends to his clothing, much like Zoro's asura creates virtual limbs and blades, so much so that its 9 sword style, however we all know its because his shoes are invulnerable.
I really don't think Oda and DEX can be mixed….what makes Oda a great mangaka is his way of antecipate things...
I do believe some of Oda's ideas came of nowhere, but i also believe he uses these ideas after a while...he prepare just to prevent a DEX, maybe for various chapters....
You know, there seems to be a lot of people throwing DEX around lately without taking into account what it really means.
I've been saying that for pages and pages…but people are not really inclined to listen. ~.~;;
Nah, you're not the only one

As am I. =D
I'm more interested in the fact that his pants are flame retardent as well as his shoe.
Personally, I kept hoping that when the fight was over, Sanji would start to panic and scream that his pants were on fire. Ah well. xD
Things like why his pants aren't on fire are kinda things you should never question ya know. I mean, Ace should've been naked after using his powers (Oh god, That image won't leave my head). Also, enough with DEX thing, Oda used DEX and that's that . It doesn't really detract from the story that much, even thought I still hate the mermaid idea. I wonder what's in store for the next chapter, I wanna be suprised.
Well, with Sanji's new attack, I was just thinking that the flames on Sanji's pants were caused by the glow from his shoes. I dunno, it makes as much sense as kicking ryankaku in the shape of a werewolf, seriously, how does that make the attack more effective?
Ah, we're going to rip on One Piece like crazy when it's over.

Clothes worn by Devil Fruit users meld with them; Oda's comment was something in regard to Luffy's jacket/pants getting torn when he balloned was something along the lines of, "Well, if they tore, he would be naked, and I'm sure no one wants to see that!"
I'm more curious about how Crocodile's coat could stick to his body when he's flying in the air/running even though his arms are not in the coat's sleeves, as well as why Luffy's hat sometimes gets a string and sometimes lacks one.
sucks that the forum has been down. here's hoping we get ch. 424 spoiler tomorrow as usual.
