Well, the first few episodes didn't really seem that bad. It's just that Nami acted like more of a bitch, and they made Sanji weak by having him get beaten easily by some guy in an old-timey Eva.
I found Goatsex to be mediocre, but far more tolerable than Rainbow Mist. At least both of them weren't nearly as awful as the Apis arc.

The fact that Toei decided to do a filler arc JUST BEFORE they head for Reverse Mountain.

Integrating canon material into the filler, such as the Calm Belt scene and Erik's surprise return when the crew travel up Reverse Mountain.

Other than those things, I found this filler arc to be more tolerable, than most other filler arcs. Though, I must admit that I thought Lapanui was pretty cool with his super thumps! However, nothing will come close to the G8 arc when it comes to being the better filler!
As for Little Garden, I also found it boring in some parts, but I enjoyed it better animated.

Well, it's not that I didn't like it, maybe I was just too busy WTF'ing over the fact that I didn't see Little Garden in the dub, plus I was cramming thru it the night that I read it. I never saw 'Fantastic Voyage!' nor did I know about the severe skips and splices (hell, I missed most of the Arlong arc when it first aired on 4KidsTV). Also, I remember seeing the 'Luffy vs. Zolo' episode and the crew going to Drum Island from there.
Keep in mind that I was still getting into One Piece via scanlated manga volumes 1-35, I wouldn't discover K-F until much later.
BUY UNCUT ONE PIECE DVDs!!!

How did fans actually react to 4kids getting One piece. Were they still hopeful that there would be some good voices and not a shitload of edits?

It was like the world was ending for me. They already fucked up Shaman King, so I thought One Piece was screwed. But after the legendary interview in Anime Insider, in which they said the dub would be ever so close to the original, I had some faith. It died after five minutes of watching. They lied to everybody in that interview, and I find it funny that I found the old magazine shortly after it was announced Funimation got it.

When Nezumi was calling Marine HQ to place the bounty on Luffy's head, 4Kids apparently didn't realize that people's voices were supposed to carry through a den-den mushi like normal, because they ended up sounding like the Crab People, from South Park!

I just thought "Finally, One Piece is coming to America!" I didn't really think 4kids would do a bad job, and I happened to have liked 4kids at the time. After sitting through the dubbed Drum Kingdom, I finally discovered the original and gave up the dub.
I knew about 4Kids and their censorship long before they bought One Piece. My friend told me about how censored the Yu-Gi-Oh dub was, but still decided to check it out. I didn't think it would be that bad, then I thought One Piece was crap after the first few seconds of the theme song.
I was too lazy to download fansubs, and didn't know where to find them. It wasn't until the dub got to Arlong Park that I found K-F.

Which seemed to be true, since Chopper's introduction came right around Christmas time, and after that, essentially nothing was skipped.

It's true! When the Drum arc first aired, the 4Kids.TV website was plagued with all kinds of ads plugging the little reindeer. The site was already an eyesore as it is (too many bright colors), but they had to go and make it even uglier by sometimes having up to–and I swear on the Holy Bible--FOUR SIMULTANEOUS BANNERS on the site that read "CLICK HERE TO SEE IMAGES OF THE NEWEST ONE PIECE CHARACTER, TONY-TONY CHOPPER!" And sure enough, clicking a banner led to Chopper's bio page and he had at least a dozen images taken from Toei's official production art.
Y'know what's really fucked up? None of the OTHER members of the Straw Hat Crew had picture galleries! If that's not proof that they were banking One Piece's success on Chopper, then I don't know what is!

"I think the biggest challenge is really honoring the original series, " says Kalish. "There’s no reason for us to change the names just for the change’s sake. That being said, there are a certain issues that I think for our audience that we need to be concerned about. Those things include depictions or embracing of any idea of smoking, drinking and certain kinds of acts of violence. We want to be sure that we’re not endorsing things that we don’t want kids in this country repeating."
Thus Sanji, Luffy’s crewmate who’s never seen without a cigarette in the original Japanese version will now be toting a sucker for American broadcast. "I think ultimately, it comes down to the core issue of who these characters are," said Kalish. "Is it the smoking that’s important, or is it sort of the attitude behind it? As long as we can preserve the identity of the character in a way that’s still true to the core idea of who he is, smoking becomes not the issue as much as who he is, as far as personality is concerned."
As far as the Standards and Practices-the Federal Communication Commission rules which say what can and cannot be shown on American TV-goes, the U.S. release of One Piece cannot include smoking, drinking, excessive violence or explicit death, all of which appears in the original One Piece.
Fans can rest assured that Toei Animation, who created the anime series in Japan, is taking an active role in overseeing the American production of One Piece. "Nothing major will happen without all the key players on this show from Japan getting involved," assured Kalish. "They even have approval on all the character voices, although we’ve really been on the same page with every choice so far. Any adjustments we need to make we’re doing in concert with our colleagues in Japan so that we don’t, not to use a nautical pun, so that we don’t miss the boat when it comes to maintaining the spirit of this show."

It's a lollipop, but with pink stripes added to the stick.
I think it was to emphasize that it was a lollipop and not a cigarette, since in some 4Kids episodes where Sanji isn't on-screen often enough for the candy part on his lollipop to be shown, the cigarette will just be erased entirely.

Yep, I remember the interview with Marc Diraison and he mentioned that there were Toei representatives on hand, who wanted him to use a specific voice.

Of course at the same time, the Toei could've just been riding along with 4kids choices of voice overs. 4kids could've very well just said that X-voice is what Americans will like and Toei's could've just approved unknowingly.
I do often wonder just how big the Toei involvement was on that end…
But in any case, I believe it was said in one of the FUNi interviews that they're working to have a lot more freedom with the casting.

Is there an American branch of Toei or just a Japanese one? Because theres no freakin way Japanese Toei sat down and carefully looked at all the stuff 4Kids was doing and decided it was good. Theres no way they had any involvment in picking those voices. It completely contradicts everything they've done with One Piece in Japan. 4Kids has lied about tons and tons of stuff in interviews regarding One Piece so I don't see why anyone would believe that.
Toei in America maybe glanced at it for two seconds, but those would be completely different people. I mean really. The Japanese anime is for the most part a faithful adaptation of the original manga. Can you honestly see those same people being behind the 4Kids dub? Maybe if they hate America and Americans and think anime over here is only meant for little kids and wouldn't be appreciated the same way, but otherwise I don't see it. What other animes did Toei do?
As for Funi, they pretty much went as far as they could go in their interview in saying the 4Kids voices where bad without outright insulting them, and they promised no accents. Plus keeping guns, death, and the original bgm is a decent indicator that they are at least taking the series more seriously than 4Kids, unless they're flat out lying about those things. Goofy voices wouldn't fit with that stuff at all. Thay've got like what, two months from now before the dub airs? They would lose a ton of credibility as a dub company if they tried to pull the same "lets humor the fans by telling them were going to honor the original and then pull a swicheroo and air a dumb baby show" routine.
I'd like to know if they just send Toei a bunch of voices and have them choose one or or pick specific voices and then have Toei confirm that they're okay to use. Hopefully the latter.

Toei probably put their faith in 4Kids for one reason. (Well, 2)
Pokemon and Yugioh (Yugioh being done by Toei, and tho Pokemon wasnt, theyre both licensed by 4Kids)
Pokemon was one of the titles that initated the anime boom in this country, and very few series have achieved the mass success that Pokemon has worldwide. Pokemon is known all over the entire world, and even though it's no where as big as it once was it's still huge. Who's the company that made a name for itself with Pokemon? Toei had to of taken that into consideration (who wouldn't)
And of course Yugioh, which saw a HUGE boom before fizzling into obscurity (although it's still doing well for 4Kids, and GX has kept the franchise going) Yet another series that exploded into a worldwide phenomenon at the hands of 4Kids.
Money speaks louder than anything, and Toei was hoping that 4Kids could pull a hat trick. Sadly, both Toei and 4Kids were badly mistaken. 4Kids had gotten full of itself, thinking that One Piece could survive their dubbing/editing standards WITHOUT a mass marketing blitz.
Pokemon and Yugioh were huge because why? Because the merchandise was the key. Even if you remove the crazy editing and stuff, the real reason YGO and Pokemon are succesful in ANY country is the merchandise and the interactivity.
If Toei really did approve 4Kids' decisions, it's more than likely like this:
4Kids: We did Pokemon and Yugioh, so obviously we know how to market a series in America and make it into a huge success.
Toei: Ok, you know how America works so whatever you have planned go for it! We trust you.
Toei obviously learned it's lesson since then. Remember when 4Kids dropped OP and before Funi saved it we were talking about it's future.
A call was made to Toei (sorry I forget who, probably firecouch but I really can't remember sorry) and one of the people replying was surprised to hear that fans wanted the original content.
The fact that Toei was surprised at that proves that they have no idea about American audiences, and that made it easy for 4Kids to say "hey, we're 2 for 2, give us a chance!"
Let's also remember that many of Toei's franchises have had success in America/internationally despite changes to the original content.
Dragonball had a horrible dub in the beginning and became a worlwide hit, eventually warranting a better version. Sailor Moon's dub was awful, but did pretty well, and Sailor Moon is a very recognizeable character around the world. Digimon was edited much in the way One Piece was, but fans loved that particular dub (despite the numerous changes) and cashed in on the monster catching craze that Pokemon built.
So when it comes to Toei, as long as you've handled a succesful anime in the past you could tell them whatever you want. And when you're 4Kids (the house that Pokemon built) you could say whatever you want.
This IS the company that convinced Toei to remove the kanji on people's heads in Ultimate Muscle because they were afraid American children would write on their own heads in markers.
Yeah, Toei's kinda easy to manipulate.

Well, damn. You make it sound like they were the voice directors and they were responsible for the horrid voices we had in the 4kids dub.
If they are, then I hope (as legal issues will probably stop em from doing this) they have enough since to ignore their requests and have the voice actors voice how they should.

What do you mean "while keeping things personal"? Isn't Funi the ones with the most control over the dub? I really wish there was a way to contact the American Toei branch and tell them we want as little involvement from them as possible and to let Funi decide everything.
If they make Funi screw up the dialog and the voices I'm going to be extremely pissed. From what Funi is saying in the interviews they sound half way competent and seem to have a general (but far from perfect) idea of what the show should be and what the fans want. They still want to do stupid crap like translate out attack names and use dub terms for DVDs subs meant for a direct Japanese translation of the show despite people begging them not to, but at least they aren't completely in the dark as far as modern anime licensing goes.
American Toei doesn't seem to have any clue at all and anything they decide for the dub on their own is going to hurt its chances. Again. Toei of Japan should of taken steps to ensure that they didn't have any control anymore after royally screwing up by giving the license to 4Kids, but I guess they either can't or dont care enough to do that.

Seriously! If you like to hear the characters saying their attacks in Japanese, then WATCH IT IN JAPANESE! Keeping true to the spirit of the original is all well and good, but people shouldn't complain about EVERY little change that is made to localize a series.
Don't get me wrong, but FUNi did screw up by leaving a ton of attacks completely unnamed in DBZ, but it's NOTHING compared to what 4Kids did to One Piece as a whole! Besides, try and have a LITTLE faith, because there's NO WAY IN HELL it'll be as bad as what 4Kids did!

I said they wanted to use translated, DUB ATTACK NAMES for the SUBS. Anime subtitles are supposed to be a direct translation of the Japanese version (and NOT for the dub) because thats the whole reason theyre there. And the people watching it in Japanese would expect the subs to match up with that version. Not be some stupid text translation of the dub plastered over a JAPANESE version of the show that doesn't have anything to do with what the characters are saying.
And in no way did I ever compare Funi to 4Kids in that post. I believe I made every single indication I could that they had an idea of what they where doing while 4Kids didn't. Did you guys even read it?
