Starting August 28th i'm going to be the president of the Anime Club at my school. I'm pretty happy about it but i'm a bit concerned. This year the admin is enforcing the club laws, stating that a club cannot have funding unless it has 15 members. This is an immense problem for me and the anime club because last year we were a group of four. We are now a group of one. We were able to carry on last year because of the first meeting in which we played Advent Children and we had a shitload of people show up to watch it. I honestly have no idea what i can play at the first meeting to make people continue to come, so any suggestions as to what to play at that first meeting will be a godsend. But please, don't reccomend one of the One Piece movies. I thought of that but i don't think all too many people would be that interested.

Vampire Hunter D or Akira. Something classic like that.
-
I was thinking something like that, but i doubt i'll get alot of people with something that most people have already seen/own.
-
Maybe a movie… Howl's Moving Castle?
Hmm... if it's just for popularity, you could burn a DVD of one of the Naruto movies. Naruto's popular. I think.
-
Yeah naruto would bring a lot of people. If so do movie 2, movie 1 SUCKED. Though maybe if you dont want to go spoilerish kinda do movie 1.
Ghost in the shell might bring people too though I havent seen it
-
is this high school, or secondary school? That might help me make a suggestion. And are you looking for an overal crowd, or more boys, or girls. Girls, go with inuyasha, boys, go the akira way. Hey, here's a thought that just popped into my head. Battle angle, or gunsmith cats.
-
Both Naruto movies sucked. Also, with the episodes as they are right now with over a year with fillers, I really don't think many people will come. If your school allows R rated movies, go for Aira or Ghost in the Shell. Maybe Animatrix.

actually it is neither high school nor secondary school. this is college, and at that it's an art college. Which means i'll take anything artsy, or brand new off tube. Right now i'm leaning more toward either showing all six episodes of FLCL, or something by Ghibli that isn't Howl's Moving Castle, Princess Mononoke, or Spirited Away.
-
Naruto's still pretty popular… at least, looking at the cons I've been to and what they sell at Hot Topic.
FLCL might work, but a lot of people have seen it already, I'm sure.
-
I'll recommend Castle in the Sky. Full of action AND heartrending.
-
Castle in the Sky is good and very pretty. I'm recommend Porco Rosso as another Ghibli film.
-
I'd say The Castle of Cagliostro. It's a great piece of animation history and it's just about one of the most fun/hilarious movies, like, ever.
-
Perhaps a small-value giveaway could ensure good turnout, like get a $10 set of gashopon (probably something more popular here like Naruto ones) and give them out as door prizes.
And clever marketing.
"Akira Toriyama will be there!"
Then you get two guys to come out… Akira Smith and Bob Toriyama.or more seriously, perhaps something which would attract the interest of the non-fan community-- a promise of an interesting discussion on a subject which is both general interest and anime-appropriate... maybe "Homer Simpson, Goliath, and Alucard: animation beyond age 10?"
-
isn't college/university secondary school? I'd say Gibli's Nausica. That has a good apeal to lots of people.

i thought secondary school was middle school. Anyway right now i'm leaning more toward showing either Porco Rosso, Castle in the Sky or Nausicaa. They're all pretty good and since they're Ghibli i'm hoping that'll arouse some interest. The problem with my school is that it's an art school, and that generally equates to a very small pocket of people liking anime and the rest hating it for all it's worth.
-
I went to sheridan in ontario canada. (also an art school) if you didn't like anime, you were in the minority. It was great.
-
i wish i could say the same for Pratt. Or maybe people just don't want to admit liking it.
-
You could maybe try to bring in a few dvd's and have a vote on what to watch?
-
i go with porco rosso, too.
or the good ol' mononoke hime.
-
I'm leaning more toward Porco Rosso myself. I'm not showing Princess Mononoke though. Everyone's seen it already along with Spirited Away and Howl's Moving Castle.
-
Well i've come to the descision that i'm going to show Nausicaa. It's Miyazaki's first, it's epic, and since it's by Miyazaki i'm hoping people will recognize the name and come. I still have really low expectations for a turn out.
-
I didn't know that. I always asumed it was totoro.
-
nope. Nausicaa was made in 1984. Totoro was made in 1988.
