One Piece: Expanded Universe(EU)

Well I get your point but must disagree. Oda managed to design a really complex universe in One Piece and he might in fact go as long as he's pleased with. This is especially remarquable as the only "story" that were that deep constructed were usually books that were written in 10 + volumes.

Indeed Oda manged to create a whole new world while detailing its geography, history, political context and inserted the whole balance of powers (marine, pirate, shichibukai, WG) ruling it.

The only other stories that really featured so much details on their universe (while not beeing based on real history) were in fact probably star wars, but also Lord of the ring (which though i'm not very found was very complete and became the basis of lot of games, story, movies), The hitchhyker guide's to the galaxy (my personal favorite though quite fucked up) and Dune (which probably is one of the most complete universe ever coming from a human soul)..

Agreed here. Frankly I avoid getting pissed off at Star Wars expansions and the like by ignoring the extended universe stuff, because I didn't like it much. Search for Mount Yoda was crap. But I'm not against expanded universes in general.

Please pardon me for bumping this ancient topic, I just remembered this topic and remembered how the idea of One Piece getting it's own expanded universe was ridiculed but with light novels such as Ace and Law, it does seems that it is having it's own expanded universe.

Yeah, I imagine many people would only want Oda having part in the writing since it's his story, but with original stories, fillers, movies, and such having come out after all this time, I wouldn't be against bonus material coming out long after the last chapter ends. I could see little factoids be written into updated vivre cards for all time which may not be even particularly relevant, but are nice to have and know about regardless.

I wouldn't mind a small manga about a different crew in one of the Blues as a spinoff, but imho that is the extent to which we should go.

I think spin-offs about other characters would be the best for an EU. Specifically, a series covering Garp from his childhood to the battle at God Valley would be really interesting. Seeing why he chose to become a Marine and seeing what it's like as a Marine in-training isn't something the main series has done.

Yeah, and I think I'd also be willing to read about a spin-off manga with any of the Straw Hats as the protagonists. Some say most of them aren't interesting enough in the One Piece manga, but I think there's still potential.

My main issue with spin-offs focusing on other Straw Hats is that unless the crew seperates at the end of the story they are always together. And in that case its really just the main story again but with slightly more emphasis put on someone who is not Luffy.

If it has to be related to the crew themselves, Oda should do his own little Gaiden after OP is over where he officially canonizes Strong World and the G8 arc by giving them proper manga treatment

While I am pretty much against a sequel, eventual spin-off would be appreciated. We already got Ace and Law's Novel which already made OP and extended universe. Keeping on that, focusing on character whose backstory would never influence the main manga, but still by Oda's review would be good.

God, I keep hating what they did with the Ace novel manga adaptation, just skipping most of new things (Isuka, Draw) and just focusing on being a retelling of early Marineford Ace fb.

It might be a decade but it'll only be a matter of time Oda does a sequel himself or okays one like Toriyama did with Super.

In between that there'll be tons of spinoffs. Also I wouldn't be surprised if the movies never stop after the manga is done and some become canon due to that.

Blackbeard's and Strawhat's crew reluctantly team up to prevent that.

I can see it. Probably won't happen though.

Maybe just BB and Luffy against Sakazuki though.

The backstory novels of canon characters have been hit and miss so far because there's so little they're able to do in terms of pivotal events and character growth. The important bits for these characters were already in the manga. There's not that much left to gain from showing their whole lives. Let's take our spinoffs to some different parts of the world. After the success* of Hero Academia Vigilantes, I'd be happy to see (and surprised there hasn't been) another author/artist being given a mostly self-contained corner of the universe to play around in. Give us some things fans have been asking for that don't fit in the main story, like how bounty hunters work in different areas of the world's power scale, or what the other three Blues look like, or something around the time of Roger's execution to give us a before and after of how the Great Pirate Era actually impacted everyday sailing and low level pirates.

*success here referring to how much I, personally, enjoyed it. I have no idea how Vigilantes stacks up to the main series financially or critically, I just really like it.

I'd be up for a Coby-focused novel set in the timeskip that actually tells/shows us what happened in the Rocky Port incident. It's been mentioned several times and we know it earnt Coby the status of hero but we have no clue what actually happened. We also know it involved Law and may be related to how he got the 100 pirate hearts that allowed him to become a warlord. I feel like the main series won't ever touch on it so would like to see it covered somehow.
