Any overall evaluations of Fairy Tail? I know Rave's author has simmilarities with Oda's style, and in this case, character profiles and setting, but what's the basic driving theme (id est, pirates/bounty hunters/rogues).
Fairy Tail

Well I WOULD use IRC but I'm at work, and IRC is blocked here.
Thoughts on this: It's a fun shonen adventure with magic as the twist, and a good amount of comedy thusfar, but I can't shake the likeness to one piece. We've got:
! Main Character's dragon attacks that look like gear 2 luffy meets firefist ace; that girl looks way too much like nami and she's moneygrubbing + using her sex appeal for $$, mainchar got pissed about insulting fairytale like luffy gets pissed about insulting nakama/shanks etc., government appears to be the overall enemy, and more I prolly can't think of right now
That aside tho, I gotta say I enjoyed this chapter and look forward to what's coming up next. Somewhat predictable, but I know some of these things are shonen cliches, and there's no getting away from them. 7/10 so far.

Actually, I should note that when I first saw the advertisement for this on Yotsuba, I was genuinely disgusted; once upon a long time ago, people used to bash Oda for having an "unconventional style" that was outside mainstream media. While I do not frown upon people borrowing from his ground breaking literary presidency, copying Oda's themes cheapens the originality of the authentic One Piece manga, just like how people dislike Dragonball Z nowadays (despite its merits) because there are so many "clones", One Piece included.
I wouldn't be surprised if people outside this forum used Fairy Tail as an excuse to bash Oda because he is using a mainstream artistic style (in contrast to how perceptions initially were).
-
Wow I read it and really liked it. It has potentail to be better then rave. I can't wait for the second chapter. Good job kefi.
edit: Version 2 is out? What was wrong with one? Spelling errors? I didnt really notice…
-

I hate it how people are so closed minded they can't accept it if someone draws manga their way rather than "mainstream". It's like games and graphics - some people will bash a game just because it has bad graphics, and I hate that.
Anyway, personally I might see why some people think the female lead is a bit like Nami, but I also see some of Elie in her as well. I quite liked the small taster ocean posted and if I understood IRC I'd probably check it out (never used IRC so I have no real experience).

Bad Graphics? Not necessarily. Remember the Windwaker?

Heard of Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni? Horrible, horrible graphics (but with some charm) but a superb storyline. Most won't touch it because it's a doujin and because of the graphics.
-
edit: Version 2 is out? What was wrong with one? Spelling errors? I didnt really notice…
Yeah, spelled Ultia wrong. Should be Urrutia. And there's one more mistake I spot after releasing v2, but … oh well, no one else has pointed out it yet, so I'll just leave it.
-

Hah, I've heard of that. I remember finding some piano music for it somewhere, with some sort of weird Red Na in the middle of it.
But yeah, I think people are forgetting that some of the greatest games today have evolved from the greatest games with worser graphics from the past.
And that games are meant for gameplay.
-
@yokaiforte:

True, but if I remember correctly everyone did nothing but bash the game durign the development phase due to the graphics. I also used to frequent a FF forum, and can remember some fanboys who were baised towards good graphics, which perhaps left me with a slightly bitter towards "graphics whores" and anyone who acts in a simular fashion (i.e. bashing a manga becuase of the artwork being different).

I totally agree with you but that's going off topic. Sorry about that.
-
woah, sorry about my wording then. I was speaking about the windwaker not having bad graphics but still having something non mainstream to make it bashed. Like Oda.
On topic: pretty interesting manga. This band of "people that aren't liked by government by how they act against it but are still the coolest thing around" kind of reminds me of the Gekko State from Eureka seveN.
-
I read the first chapter, and I really enjoyed it.
edit: haha, I just noticed Plue on the cover page.
-
Thank you all how translated this manga. I really enjoyed it.
-
i like this, great story…of course...one piece is always better :)
-
Thanks for the scanlation :) really interesting manga so far.
-
i like this manga it starting out better then even Rave master to me,but i did see a LOT of likeness to one piece especially in Natsu being compared to luffy
-
@Cap'n:
Wow, calling this a ripoff is retarded. This author has always had this style of drawing.
I never read Rave, but it looked enjoyable. Something doesn't have to be original to be enjoyable.
They also have to be well told and inventive WITHIN thier established genres.
Check and check under the No column for Rave.
-
….........Natsu x Lucy. >.>;

Ah….......................... no, sorry.
-
Hmm, I'm liking what I see so far in the scans (and from the plot summary posted earlier).
And to be honest, the guy on the far left with black hair looks a lot more like L from Death Note than anyone else (that's actually the first person that came to mind when I saw him).
-
Do you see what I see?
-
a page of scanlated manga? then yes.
-
Oda invented the technique of zooming in on an angry eye.
-
oh boy. here we go again.
-
Just let the poor manga alone and its just starting, oh and that guy from the top right pannel the one that is on the left reminds me of one of the fishermen?(correct me of im worng) the pink one from arlong park lol
-
Actually that guy reminds me more of one those oni guys back in Rave, you can even make out some horns.
-
@Cap'n:
Oda invented the technique of zooming in on an angry eye.
I salute you, sir. o.O
-
Just read the first chapter, and so far it seems like a fun little shonen rump. Nothing exciting or overly special, just good typical fun. Of course, that means it's pretty easy for it to become absolute crap later on, but I'm not too high strung with my expectations.
I like the art, and I don't care if it's ripped off Oda's. Hell, it may be the reason I like it to begin with.
-
Hiro Mashima didn't copy Oda, Oda was Hiro Mashima all along!
:D:D:D:D@Cap'n:
Oda invented the technique of zooming in on an angry eye.
Which means no one else can ever use that technique ever again! Bwahahahahahahahahaha!

Meh the thing about FF fans is that they speak complete BS most of the time. I believe they praise FF7 for it's graphical greatness… Yeah that's why everyone had triangle arms and the main character looked like Super Saiyan Gohan.
FF8 was more like the first great graphical FF... too bad everyone put's it down.
But I don't know what to think of Fairy Tale... I never did like Rave Master...
-
FF7 is praised for its memorable characters firstly, secondly its story, and thirdly the fact that it was the first 3dish FF game, FF8 is bashed due to its chick flick story.
I like this manga, Oda influence or not, it has some interesting characters. So far I haven't seen too much of their personalities but based on CH 2, I'd say I really like Loki, Grey and Kana's personalities, Grey's humorously nude encounters the most.

It wasn't that bad of a chick flick story… Meh I liked it more than it's predecessor but what cha gonna do?
I say we wait until a load of chapters are out before making a decision I mean two chapters really isn't much to go by.
-
Just keep ff8 out of this thread please. I hate offtopic and i really hate that game as well mostly because of Squall (he's the whinniest most annoying bastard ever - read that too normal/real life and that's a really bad thing ) crap … please no more ff8
-

wait, the main characters' names are Loki, Grey and Kana? talk about common names…
-
names are:
Natsu - Luffy ******************* Loki - Ichigo
Gray - Ace *********Kana - Chick drinking barrel of beer
Marijane - White haired hottie Lucy - Nami in a B cup
Happy - Cat Master - Dwarf
Plue - snowman on cover Sieg - Blue hair
Ultia - "im bored" chick that looks kinda slutty.no name for the big dude yet.
-
The big dude's name is appearing on ch2. I was just lazy to go back to chapter to look it up. The master has some different name, too. Plue's name is not confirmed yet. It's possible that he gets some other name (like how Sieghart and Sieglein have different names). And it's Urrutia, not Ultia. (Gotta get version 2!)
-
…are we still matching characters with characters from One Piece? I thought we got over this.
-
I think it's perhaps the easiest way for people to put names to faces.
-
@Advent`:
For some weird reason the image reminds me of Bellamy, Luffy and Nami. But whatever, I'll try to read it sometime because it seems kind of interesting.
-
I don't know, only after two actual chapters beening released so far. My opinion of the manga really hasn't left the "Sweden Zone" yet.
The characters do have the Oda feel to them but I like the manga over that fact, which according to other comments in this topic, so do other people. The only thing that makes me dislike the manga is that magic is the basis for the backstory. To me, magic as a background has been overused.
Oh and all the new Final Fanasty games have sucked since the series left the two dimesion realm, just like the Mario series. It should have never went to three dimesional graphics.
-
..huh. When I first saw the guy with Blue hair, tatoo across his eye, I thought ".. He looks just like Sieg Hart..". Turns out, his name is SiegLein. XD Maybe they're brothers or something?
BTW, RAVE is pretty generic overall, but it's good. It was my gateway into different series actually. I probably never would have started collecting more manga, had I not decided to pick up Rave Master.
-
BTW, RAVE is pretty generic overall, but it's good.
My thoughts exactly. A manga series doesn't have to be 100% original to be enjoyable.
I'm quite keen to read this series, but I don't know how to use IRC… sweat drop Anyone know a site with a newbie's guide?
-
Look at the rules here, Caracal. Arlong Park has a Newbie's guide in its rules.
-
scratches the back of his head
Truth be told, I've used a number of forums and they're all pretty much the same so I rarely look at the rules. Thanks for that, I'll check it out later.
-
I also hate magic in just about anything(I mean, what can beat magic?). I'm liking that Ace/Luffy guy. Can't wait till next chapter.
-
Actually, as far as I can remember, I can't recall a big shounen manga using magic as a basis for a character's power… there's always the chi/chi-ripoff (like chakra,) or silly abilities (like devil fruits,) or just physical strength.... but magic? Doesn't seem overused to me in the least.
-
Uh, would RAVE count as a shonen manga involving magic? Of course, it's still the same author…
anyways, magic beats magic.
-
Never read/saw Rave Master.
-
I was refering to more of American culture obession with magic then actual Japanese obession with magic. Hopefully it won't be any Harry Potter like crap.
